I been running froyo since dk28 dropped. Everything seems basically fine. I don't have any issues with gps or anything. I came from di18, re-odined di18 again then went to dk28. My problem is my signal keeps dropping in and out even if I don't move anywhere and have great service. It happens at least once every 1-2 minutes. Besides being anoying to look at, its killing my battery trying to look for service. I was using epic experience, now running superheroes. Is anyone else having this issue, or has came up with a remedy.
wrong section, post in general.
Although I'm getting great battery life - Went twelve hours today with semi-heavy usage, and only dropped to 35% remaining in battery life. I too am experience signal issues. My cell stand-by is only running about 10-20% of my battery usage, but 54% or greater is cell stand-by with out signal. I'm going to do a full wipe and flash another rom and see if this doesn't resolve the issue.

This happens to me too. everything was fine when I first purchased the phone, But as soon as I rooted and flashed custom roms this problem has popped up. My recent flash was via odin and the DK28 leak. Everything worked great on the rom but the signal would also go in and out like you're experiencing. So I thought maybe flashing back to stock DI18 would fix it. It has for the most part, but once in a while it'll do it but not as frequent with the custom roms . I'm waiting for official froyo to come out, let's see what happens, maybe they'll have an update for the modem or something ...
I spent the day with a coworker out on the road. He has a stock Epic and he constantly had more bars than I did.

I been feeling like flashing back to 2.1 but i Really enjoy having full flash. It helps pass the time at work. Wish I could find out what's wrong. And I've also notice a pretty annoying lag. I really like the look and feel of this rm but I'm about to try the viperrom. Seems like everyone there is having great experiences. But it just might be dk28 all together.

So the past few days I have been getting an error that I can't replicate under any circumstance, its totaly random. I will get a modem crash and the phone gives a ram dump notice and a reboot phone option. If I hit the reboot phone option the problem is present when rebooted. Only a battery pull fixes it. I'm on the ef02 leak with the ec05 modem. I don't have a pc to flash the ef02 and ef10 modems. Any help would be great. Thanks
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
This is def. and EF02 issue... had the exact same thing happen, i THINK on EF02 modem, ram dump, then a bunch if FC's, wiped, odined, etc... then went to marcusant's i3, worked great, then after about a week, I got the perma airplane mode, the modem 'dies', settings say baseband unknown, build unknown, etc, if you try to actually put in in airplane, wont come out, the option is then greyed out. Im guessing its just another GB leak issue, probly one of the ones they are working on right now... if anyone knows otherwise about either issue, let me know, I now think the only advantage of getting froyo was that GB was coming, cause its awesome, and I cant wait to get back on it!
Ive been having the same modem crashing issues. Seems like it takes about a week to crash. baseband unknown, build unknown. Odin to fix. had the same issue on EE03 but only happened twice. Running EF02 modem. I think it could be whats holding back another release. might be trying to iron the bug out. I think the EF10 modem fixes the issue. haven't done too much reading on it.. plus people have mixed feelings about EF10. i might just give t a try because of the modem crashing. if i do, i will post back results.
On a side note, can't you flash the modems from Clockwork?
I've been running the build nearly since it came out, and have yet to have this issue. I do, however in low service areas get random modem reboots, but it works just fine..
well this is not what i wanted to hear. i dont have odin on my macbook (no windows) i guess ill have to find a friend with winders on it
Here is the thread on flashing modems without Odin:

I get the unknown modem crash all the time (about every other day).
The fix is actually quite simple. Just flash the EF02 kernel. No wipes needed.
I know the kernel doesn't touch the modem, but somehow it works. Which makes me think the problem isn't the modem being unstable, but the kernel. Something involving it's interaction with the modem might be prone to corruption.
But yeah, just reflash the EF02 kernel.

Try using heimdall. Its basically odin for mac and linux. I've used it many times on linux with no problems, plus it seems simpler to understand than odin.

Bingo! I have had modem issues with the GB leak no matter what modem I am using. But it seems to be more prevalent at my office where I have low signal and I bounce from Sprint to roaming all the time. At home (on my airave) with full signal I never have modem crashes. It seems to be related to low signal or switching to roaming. At work it crashes several times a day. At home with full signal I have yet to have a modem crash.
FYI, You shouldn't have to odin to get the modem back. I was doing that at first. Just shut the phone down and pull the battery for a few minutes then put it back at reboot. Modem should come back.
./
I got same issue with the stock gingerbread rom. Modem crashed after low signal / roaming. Happened with ec05 ef02 ef 10 modem.
At first I was odin a modem to fix it. But later I found out clear cache and taking out battery for few minutes fix the issue too.

Happened same with me tonight with ef10 modem. Crashed at my parents house with low signal. Just did a power cycle with battery pull and it came back up.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
It just seemed once it crashed it was less stable so I reflash the modem after these just to be sure.
I've only had to instance where the modem reboots, you hear the phone beep twice. And after it reboots itself, all is well, I've no need to reboot my phone or anything.
Are all of you without data/voice when your modem reboots?
I've had this happen twice with ef02 modem, reboot wouldn't fix, booting into clockwork and wiping cache did however.

I have tried both modems and it crashes only at low signal, unfortunately for me I have low signal at home and at work. With ef02 that things crashes ALL the time, it was just way too much but with ef10 it doesn't crash and as often as ef02, and also I don't get as many roaming as ef02.
So far ef10 its good but not perfect.

First I'll start off by saying tonight was a really terrible night for me so if this comes off as venting so be it lol.
Samsung, you're getting there that's for sure. Scrolling, screen off/on is buttery smooth and things seem to be working better than I had expected.
With that being said, there is still work that needs to be done. It may just be my location, but with the EG22 modem I feel like I've been roaming more than usual. I flashed back to the EC05 modem just to see and it confirmed my suspicion: either my phone or my area just doesn't like the new modem very much.
Another key component is battery life, it's been pretty sub-par for me. At work I have terrible reception (no bars, even roaming) so I put the phone on airplane mode and the battery is still dropping pretty consistently, much faster than on any of the other leaks or Froyo. Must be a rogue process(es) eating it up, but I can't be sure unless I do some digging which I don't really feel like doing.
All in all it's definitely coming along nicely, but by no means is it phenomenal. But for the first time since DI18, I can honestly say that I feel Sammy is doing some stuff right. Keep it up, don't let us users down
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
My impressions of the modem/rom is they are faking things a little bit on the signal meter as I know the signal isn't that strong in those areas. And it's not like a software update just gives better signal.
I agree that it seems like I'm roaming more on EG22, but the modem doesn't seem to have any effect. For example, I ran the stock EG22 build for a while and noticed the roaming issue and weaker WiFi reception. Reverting to the the EC05 modem didn't seem to help these issues. One of the stores I work in has a WiFi router that I can access throughout the store on Froyo (EC05), but on GB (EF02/EG22), WiFi disconnects when I walk to the rear of the store. Doesn't seem to matter which modem I'm using at the time. I even flashed back to Froyo yesterday but left the EG22 modem installed. GPS, 3G, and WiFi were flawless all day everywhere I went. So it seems that there must me some code/instructions in the build itself that are more relevant than the modem firmware.
Another interesting tidbit is that there basically is no difference in EC05 and EG22 modems. Randy did a binary differencing to generate a patch between EC05 and EG22 and the patch file is 142 bytes, which is probably about enough to change the version name.
I have noticed since the first GB leak that the WiFi reception is horrible now compared to a stock Epic with FroYo.

Yes, it makes me wonder if they might have the power to the radios dialed back a bit intentionally to help them diagnose something possibly?
I have noticed the wifi bars being low, but it isn't effecting the speed at all. I consistently get 1.5mbps down/600kbps up when over 3g, and have seen 9mbps on 4g. Call quality seems good as well. As for battery drain? It might be a bit faster than I'm used too, but then again, I'm coming from SRF 1.2. If there are any issues with the TWLauncher, I don't notice them because I'm a LauncherPro user. Issues with the browser? I use Dolphin, so if there are any, again, I don't know. Overall though, this ROM is stable enough for daily use.

Hi all. I apologize for starting new thread. I am travelling right now and have NO access to a computer other than my epic. I am totally dependent upon my epic's gps and nav and the tapatalk search is not helping.
I upgraded to stock eg22 and then odined cwm and su to get root. Other than that, I am totally stock
The gps is freezing constantly when in navigation. It's losing signal and totally locking the driver so that the indicator up top says thereis a lock but there isn't.
Nothing gets rid of the frozen icon other than reboot. I tried gps on/off from quick menu, airplane mode, ending all tasks, turning off using deep setup menus....gps is useless until reboot.
It only seems to freeze during nav mode whereas regular maps seems ok...
Please help to point me towards a fix or workaround.
Thanks all!
Josh

This is a known bug with the leaks. I believe it is caused by the battery getting too hot. Try running it without the charger on and see if it goes further without a lockup. Best bet is to restore a froyo ROM but you will still be stuck with the EG22 modem until you get to a computer. I assume you have the EG22 modem already which is the best for GPS on EG22 leaks.
There is also a program in the market called GPS Aids (free) which some people have said worked for them. I still believe it is heat though.

You are correct that I am on eg22 modem. I didn't even think it could be battery issue from overheating. I can try leaving keyboard open too. That used to help with heat running wmwifi back in my wm days.
I'd rather try that before going back to ec05 rom, although would use flashable ec05 rom or modem if I have too as I'm here for another 6 days and need gps as the roads have no signs for 5-10 mile clips...
Thank you both!

Hehe...I tried another approach which you may have in your files somewhere, a ROM that also installs the EC05 modem regardless of what modem you are on. Bonsai had ROMs that update the modem but only checked for earlier modems before swapping, not later versions.
Good luck Josh. Another trick you can use is to use the GPS for clips at a time. If there is a 20 mile run before an exit, leave it off until you get near the exit. Then start it again from there.
Let me know if you agree about the heat problem, it is a theory I am working on.

Good idea Kenny. From what I remember reading, the freezes do seem to be after 20 to 30 minutes. I didn't even think of that. Its a lot easier than finding an e-bar or library and trying to install Sammy drivers and such. Is that even possible?...lol

Before I went on vacation last week, I flashed back to Bonsai 4.1.3 because I knew I would need my GPS for the trip. However, I forgot to flash the EC05 modem so I was still running the EG22 modem all week. During the trip my GPS would loose signal during Navigation about every hour or two, but unlike the EG22 ROMs, it would regain signal within 20-30 seconds and recover without a reboot. I've since switched back to the EC05 modem and have yet to lose GPS signal once. Just thought I would share this in case it provides any insight.

This sounds similar to the EC05 GPS crash bug. In the last EG22 GPS thread I asked folks to record a logcat so I could very if this is the problem, but nobody took up that offer.

Do you know if Bonsai 4.1.3 contains my GPS crash fix? I don't have a changelog handy.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't have your GPS crash fix, but I've never had any issue with GPS on 4.1.3, or any EC05 ROM for that matter. I use Navigation pretty extensively at one of my jobs, and it's always been reliable.
I can't compare the EG22 issue to the EC05 issue because I've never experienced one on EC05. With EG22, the GPS crashes after a period of Navigation and requires a reboot of the phone to fix it. My experience on vacation was similar, except that the GPS would recover after 20 or 30 seconds(no reboot required). This was running a EC05 ROM (bonsai 4.1.3) with the EG22 modem. Once I replaced the EG22 modem with the EC05, I was unable to replicate the issue.

I believe the EG22 issue to be different and possibly heat related. With these leaks we have had random reboots, batteries refusing to charge due to temperature and the gps freezing after an hour or so. With EC05 I had the issue where it would not lock from the start without a reboot but EG22 (and the other modems) just stop at some point and mostly require a reboot to get going again.

Certain of that? I know they've pulled in some of my fixes in the past, I'm just not sure about that one.
The EC05 GPS crash problem is due to a synchronization bug that results in interleaved requests to the modem, which gets hosed up. In practice, it happens with relatively low probability so most folks don't run into it, but it is consistently reproducable.
Now, there's probably a separate bug in EG22 that causes the GPS to puke for another reason. If the sync bug is still present, and in response to the GPS puking the RIL issues multiple request to the modem, it could cause a crash just like EC05, but it happens more frequently due to the modem bug.
With the crash bug is fixed, EG22's GPS may still puke, but as you experienced (assuming Bonsai is patched), it will likely fix itself after 20-30 seconds instead of requiriing a reboot.

Do you have reason to believe the GPS issue is related to the others, or is it because they manifest in the same leaked version?
Anyways, kernel panics and watchdog reboots are hard to debug. But a GPS crash is something we can at least log and investigate further. Which is why I'm interested in obtaining a log from someone who either experiences it, or can reproduce it.
every time i go on a road trip i flash my phone back to the last stable rom i used. no way i'm leaving NY these days with a leaked rom
for the record i drove from NYC to manchester TN via DC on EC05 with the GPS and the music player running the whole time and never lost connection for more then a minute in either direction

Bonsai did pull in your TWS, and keyboard patches, but none of the GPS stuff.
Im currently running scrambled eggs (eg22 rom) and im running the ee03 modem...my gps starts instantly but after 15 minutes or so, it just disconnects and searches for a signal...i simply exit google nav and restart it and gps is working just like it was...it's annoying but i can deal with it till OTA drops...its not a modem issue...it has to do with eg22 and how samsung has set up gps settings in gingerbread..Im no dev btw, just my 2 cents lol

Fair enough. In any event, I'm still willing to take a look at a logcat if someone affected by this problem can grab one.
I have installed the EL30 update after going back to stock EC05>EI22. Here is what I have observed about EL30 (I have not applied any other fixes nor rooted yet):
-The upside down horizontal calibration for compass is fixed
-Keyboard lag is gone
-GPS improved from locking only 4 satellites to 6-7 (the GPS Fix I think, could can allow more, upto 9-12 under best conditions), so I think this made be good enough, but balancing power for battery consumption.
-"Android System" service aka CIQ is definitely gone.
-Haven't experienced speaker feedback squeal yet, although I did on EI22 after I had used voicemail and google voice search.
I have installed CWM 5.0.2.7 and rooted. I had to do the CWM flash twice (once to get SU on and open Root Explorer so I could delete the install recovery script, since there's no EL30 Kernel yet that takes out the install-recovery.sh script. No, I'm getting about the same signal with my Airave. The wifi looks like more bars than EI22.
Has the rotation sensor been jerky for you in the past (skymap/yelp/other AR apps) and has EL30 made it smooth again?
Seems snappier. GPS is definitely better. Had a lock as good as 1m today for a short time while driving around and it was cloudy. 4m was the norm. Will test the modem over the next few days.
Man, if the keyboard skip is fixed and the GPS too, I'll be happier than a dead pig in the sun. The wife and I made a run from Houston to Ft Worth this weekend. I had to pull the battery about 7 times on the trip to get the GPS back on track. Extraordinarily annoying when you are trying to find your way in a place you've never been before.
No OTA here yet, probably will go the manual route. Thanks for the good news on the update, look forward to having a phone I don't have to cuss out all the time!
Sleeb
Preliminary results for me with EL30 modem running EI22 Legendary is: ~7% TWS while at home. I'll report back after a normal day at work and then going home.
With EI22 modem I would average ~3% TWS.
It's a shame I'd have any TWS since I live in a metropolitan area. Stupid Sprint coverage.
I think a lot of you need to remember that sprint is doing all kinds of stuff to towers lately and other issues may make your signal bars report differently. I'm still on ei22 and while typing this I watched my signal bars go from 0 - 2

a few things I've noticed:
GPS has improved
bug where GPS icon remains on screen after GPS has been shut off has been fixed
battery life is considerably worse
I'm getting horrible GPS I only get like 4 out of 11 fixs and on my way to work this morning which is about 30 miles I kept losing gps would search for sattelites for forever as soon as i closed navigation it would work again for a few minutes then do it again.

You may want to try resetting your A-GPS state using GPS Status app in the Market.

i've noticed considerably better battery life, but I am rooted and use TiBu for freezing stuff.

Has the rotation sensor been jerky for you in the past (skymap/yelp/other AR apps) and has EL30 made it smooth again?

Yes rotation sensor was upside down starting in EB13 Froyo and has been until EL30. You could fix it though by doing your horizontal calibration upside down. Now you don't have to.

Funny, I was just about to post a little message about my stupidity and battery life.
Since I keep things mostly stock, my upgrade routine was to backup apk/data, and system data in MyBackup, then reflash back to stock EI22, install the EL30 update, do the CWM/root dance, and restore stuff in MyBackup. All went well, but my battery life was about %70 of what it was. For the first 2 days I just figured I was playing with the phone too much, but today I started plowing through the settings. What I found was that even though I had restored everything in MyBackup, not every setting stuck. For instance, Facebook was set to update every hour even though it had previously been set to never update. I also had to re-freeze DRM after the install. There may still be more things I haven't found.
The point is after an upgrade, especially if you have re-installed stuff, go through every setting you can think of that could be killing your battery. It's possible that some app has been inadvertently set to connect too often and that is what is killing the battery too fast.

That was the very first thing I tried and it hasn't made a difference.
