Hey guys just realized that my Atrix is draining battery even when my phone is powered off. I turn it off for about 2 hours and when I turn it back on I've lost 2%. Nothing too significant but was wondering is this normal because I've never noticed something like this on all the other phones before.

What app are you using to read the battery in 1% increments?
One idea is that the built in battery monitor only displays in 10% increments so if you have a battery monitor that uses 1% then that is because it is directly reading the mV and not using the system default. So what probably happened was, the battery monitor you were using hadn't refreshed before turning the phone off. I use Circle Battery Widget and I have noticed it goes up a few percentages or down a couple when I do a reboot.
The boot up process is probably responsible for that drain in battery.

That could be it as well.
Im using Circle Battery Widget to display in 1% increments. From what I've seen it is pretty spot on since I've watched it.go down to 1% and then my phone shuts off.
But I have thought that the reboot process would take up some battery just didn't know how much...

nothing is using power when your phone is off its just your phone reading the battery wrong when you restart. i get this all the time with my captivate when i reboot, sometimes i loose a few percent and sometime up to 20%. this is not permanent and will be fine after the next recharge.

You also have to remember that any battery monitor is not going to be 100% accurate so even a 2% margin error is still pretty good
why are you powering off anyways? Even if you do, you can always just pull the battery just to make sure...
Actually I think I have that problem too... Powered off my Atrix last night at 22% (using circle battery widget) & took out the Battery and SIM card so I could play around with my N1 again. 12 hours later, I put everything back in, power up my Atrix, and it reads at 14% battery life. And I'm pretty sure the phone doesn't need 7-8% battery to just power up...
My Atrix battery was completely left alone, not even inside the phone during those 12 hours. What's up with that?

Circle Battery Widget has to use its own method for reading the battery level and it also doesn't refresh constantly. The other day my meter dropped from 72 to 66 instantaneously while I was using the phone. It's the nature of the beast.
Thanks for all the feedback...
2% doesnt seem like that big of deal but I really actually wanted to understand the inner workings on the phone then really complain about the widget or the phone...
I have to power off the phone when I'm at work because I don't get reception at work so 8 hours of my phone searching for network = no good for my battery life lol
To me circular battery widget used to be point on, but after the update this week, it seems to show flaws. My widget displayed 69% for over an hour yesterday. I was browsing the internet, texting, and talked on the phone for a few minutes, so I know it wasn't correct. Then I checked status in settings, the phone said 50%. So even if I was @ 59% or 54%, thats nowhere near 69%.

i've been unplugged for 1 day, 6 hours... and i'm sitting at just under 30%

To be fair, running a smartphone without e-mail synced would sort of defeat the purpose (for many). Though to the point of this "official" thread -- I'm thankfully happy with the battery life on my Vibrant, and I have Gmail, Twitter, etc. running.
Let me guess you don't drain your phones battery either during its first use and let it completely charge up (while off) to 100%.
I did this with my wifes and mine. This has been the best battery life I've had out of a smart phone to date. I've gone up to 36 hours on one full charge. However normal is 18 hours then I charge when I go to bed and I don't even have the warning that my battery is dying.
I hate restarting my phone, it always resets my battery stats. I love seeing how long I can go .
I'm glad we have an official thread now.

I've read that this isn't necessary with Li-ion batteries (and in fact completely draining can be bad, though phones have a built-in protection mechanism to prevent total discharge)?
I will add that I briefly owned a Nexus One, and find the Vibrant's battery life to be much better... but "YMMV," i guess
completely draining IS bad, but our phone cuts off before this should be an issue (hence why, even if dead, you can still cut your phone on... though for not very long, this is not advised).
That said, the Vibrant has had VERY good battery life for me.... I also think the OP is "doing it wrong."
Seriously. How much do you do on the phone. The only way I drain this thing is surfing and downloading. I dont really have a lot of widgets. I guess if ur running alot of stuff you'll be burning battery life

Changed battery, changed device, changed ROMS. Only two things I see in common, the Vibrant and you. Personally I haven't had any issues with the Vibrant.
Just checked my battery status.
70%, unplugged for 8h 7m 38s
Display - 25%
Mediaserver - 24%
Cell Standby - 23%
CPU usage for Mediaserver - 1h 15m
Approx 1 hour of music and 5 podcasts.
Applications that I'm running that sync:
Facebook
Gmail
Google Voice
Google Talk (usually intercepts the first message then focus switches to my Desktop client)
Email via personal IMAP server (synced every 30minutes)
Yahoo Fantasy Football App
Mint App
bought the phone last week, charged to 100% with the phone off then began using it non-stop. the battery wasn't that great at first, but i have since gone through about 2-3 full cycle charges, usually draining the phone until shutoff, then leaving it on USB charge overnight. charged to 100% by the morning, then i would turn the phone on and charge a bit more until it read 100% while on. since then i have charged a couple times with the phone on, here and there. my last charge was with the phone off, wall charged overnight. no top off needed.
all syncing and background data turned on
use wifi at work, set to never turn off
3g disabled unless i need it
auto brightness
settings > sound and display > DISABLE "power saving mode"
use black.png background because i like how dark it is
don't use any data grabbing widgets
it's been 32+ hours since i last unplugged and i'm sitting at 22%
two full days use off a single charge is a-okay in my book! other peoples' use may vary, but this is my personal setup. i think doing a couple of full cycle charges in the beginning really helps. i'm completely satisfied with my current battery life, even with all the speed tests, wifi/3g surfing, and goofing around with the GPS
The "Battery Use" reported by Android is completely out of whack on my Epic. It's the one under "Settings" and then "About phone."
For example, it's listing "Voice calls" as accounting for 83% of my battery use with 3h24m29s of time on. I know for a fact I've only talked on it for ~5min today. In fact, I was curious as to why it was showing 34 mins when I checked it at noon so I kept checking it, and by 12:15, it was showing 1h35m! Totally bizarre, not to mention most of the other battery usage times are off too, including a cell standby time that's shown to be longer than the time that the phone's been on.
Anyone else having this issue?
Haven't noticed this yet, but I'll keep an eye out for it. Out of curiosity, the battery drain isn't any different though, right? Your battery isn't being drained as if you talked on the phone for 4 hours?

Honestly I can't say. My battery life has been horrendous from the first day I got the phone. Have yet to make it through an entire workday with it. That is even when it just sits in standby when I'm at work. I don't know if that has anything to do with this usage indicator issue. But I went to the local Sprint store today. They didn't really know what was going on so they gave me a new battery to try out. I will report back if anything's changed.
Make sure you condition it real good. Like for the first week, give it a full charge then use it until it dies. I've done that and ran the battery until dead on purpose about three times the first couple days. If the battery is good, the life should get better and more stable. Also I suspect that, after speaking to the dev of battery indicator pro, some brands and models of phones report a ballpark figure and some are just about right on the money. My battery has noticably improved after these full powering cycles and topping off a few times after full.

Well, hopefully that fixes it. I've talked to a few people who have gotten amazing battery life using JuiceDefender to automate turning the 3G connection on and off, which people seem to all agree is the biggest battery killer sans display, and they are claiming going from 100% battery to 95% battery overnight, 2AM to 10AM.
If I leave my phone alone for an hour I will lose that much, and that's with the same JD settings. Then again, even with my EVO I found JD to be nearly worthless. Right now it's claiming 2.11x more battery life, but if it equates to anything in actuality I might be gaining 10 or 15 minutes. Maybe.
Mine is the same way. It sits on standby most of the day. But it still eats up the battery and the phone is always warm.

If 3G sucks as much battery as suspected, then google needs to put a button for it into the Power Control Widget (1 of my favorites).

Sounds like you are suffering from that bug where the phone is always looking for a gsm signal instead of just locking into what it works with cdma.
Press and hold the power button, select airplane mode. Let it sit in airplane mode for a minute and then repeat above steps to disable airplane mode.
Your time without signal should drop significantly thus resulting in a cool phone and much better battery life.
You need to do this every time you reboot the phone by the way. This bug should hopefully be worked out with the froyo update.
Reporting back after new battery and factory reset - still broken. "Battery use" says "Cell Standby" has been on for 20mins after the phone's only been on for 11mins. Seems to be an Android or Touchwiz problem.
Still waiting to see if the new battery will carry it through a 8hr work day. If that doesn't work, then I'm trading it in for an EVO. Too bad since I really liked the physical keyboard on the Epic.

Yep, problem I have is where I live I dont get any signal. I end up roaming thus causing the radio to kill the battery extremely fast. Last night i put the phone In airplane mode and let it charge. Phone cooled down even though it was charging.
So unless I get better signal without Roaming or I move I guess I am just stuck with not being able to use my phone at home or at work.
on mine my battery meter is all off also. my battery widget shows that my phone its at like 40% while my icon in my notification bar is pretty much full like it would be only at 70%... its not even more than half gone. so I know there is an issue with how my phone reads the battery or something

Sorry to start another thread on battery issues but I was unable to find a scenario like mine.
Hey everybody, Im new to the android scene, just got my vibrant less than a month ago. Before that I had an Iphone 3g. So far I like the phone but the battery life is horrible. When I surf the internet on wifi or 3g I noticed that I use like 3-5% in a matter of 5 mins. Is this normal? I consider myself to be a light-moderate user and have been getting and average of 12 hours or so on my vibrant. Also if it makes any difference when my phone is idle or being used my temperature runs around the high 80's low 90's but when being charged it drops to the low 80's or high 70's. What is going on? How can I get more 20 hours on my phone? With the iphone I used to get an easy 15 hours and still have like 40-50% remaining.

When I first got the vibrant, it had pretty bad battery life, I would lose like 25% while sleeping 8-10 hrs. So light usage would be like a day. Slowly I started to get longer battery life (2 days on light usage). Recently I could get up to like 3.5 days on real light usage. After updating to JI6, max I can get now is like 3 days. I didn't really do much and I tripled my battery life by just giving it time.
Thanks burntrat I guess ill be patient. And I must mention that I am running stock.i was just worried because my battery temperature gets colder when charging and warmer when idle or running.

Try this. Download the system panel app from the market. You can set it to monitor your system and it will chart what applications are running and how much they are using the cpu. If you find you have some unnecessary bloatware running in the background download titanium backup and freeze those apps.

There are a lot of different ways mentioned in different forums. Try this:
Let your battery drain all the way to the point when it turns off by itself.
Charge it while its off until its full.
Unplug it, turn the phone on, then plug it in again.
After it reaches 100, unplug the charger and turn your phone off.
Once off, plug it in and let the charging complete.
Once complete, unplug it and turn the phone on. When everything has loaded, turn the phone off (note: no charging involved in this step.)
After it turns off, charge it one last time until 100%. After this, go into recovery and clear battery info (or cache, I forget). There you go
Oh, and its better if you don't download too many apps that monitor battery usage, cpu etc. cuz they will contribute to the battery consumption.

It isn't a good idea to let your battery drain all the way to zero since it is lithium ion. I think skipping that part and just charging it when it's on to full, then off to full, then on to full, then off to full and then wiping battery stats would suffice. Also you need to have clockwork recovery to wipe battery stats.

When the phone turns off by itself, the battery still has some juice left in it to prevent it from losing the ability to charge, if that's what you meant by not a good idea cuz its lithium ion. If thats not what you meant, then please explain why.

Agreed. In my case, I barely lasted 12 hours on moderate use with any of the JI6 2.1 ROMS (Eugene's, Bionix, Fusion, etc). I think after I updated to 2.2, all of the ROMS have been giving me 18+ hours on moderate-heavy use no matter what modem or kernel I use.
So where is the "unique" problem?

Even i am finding the battery life to be good. for stress testing i have turned on everything. gps, wifi, bluetooth, sync and brightness to approx 40 %.
Happy to say the phone lasts whole day with say around 30% charge remaining end of the day with lotsa calls and moderate browsing. (no videos though).
Also no battery management apps.
No ways i could have made this statement with the captivate
I watched a bunch of videos this morning. And as my screen on time states I've been putting it through its paces.
I'm not planning on keeping this phone as I'm not a big fan of the screen. I guess I got to used to the samoled on my captivate so I'm going to go back to it until samsung brings out its new phones.
This phone is very fast. Just like with the htc inspire, I gladly would pay an extra $100 for either one if they put a better screen on them.

let's hope it improves when i get the code and turn wifi off. i'm going to start to use an alarm clock other than the phone. who thought it would be nice to make an alarm clock not work with the phone off? every other phone besides iphone and android works as an alarm clock.

let's hope it improves when i get the code and turn wifi off. i'm going to start to use an alarm clock other than the phone. who thought it would be nice to make an alarm clock not work with the phone off? every other phone besides iphone and android works as an alarm clock.

How long have you had your phone? The battery lasts longer after the first few charge cycles. I've been unplugged for 15 hours and I have 60+% battery left. By the way, your Blackberry didn't have a dual core 1ghz tegra 2 processor, 1gb ram, etc. etc.
Btw my alarm works with the phone on silent. If you mean the phone powered down, I don't think I've ever seen a phone do anything with it powered down (shut off completely), even my dumb phones.

What are your display stats?
Right now my display is taking up 29% of my battery and it's been on for 1 hr and 17 minutes.
Battery started from 100% has been 7hrs and 46 minutes- now at 64%(using "Battery Monitor" app for 1% battery increments)
Started from 100%, just ticked over to 50% (so is at 59%)
Display 43%
Phone Idle 33%
Cell Standby 14%
Wi-fi 9%
Voice calls 2%
Who makes that battery monitor app?

50% actually means 45-54%

since friday night. i know the battery will get a little better in a few days, although the old days of li-ion cycle days are mostly done.
my stats:
display 44% 2 hours
idle 40%
wifi 14%
maps 4%
i have had about 4 moto phones, 4 nokias , 1 blackberry and 1 kyocera and the only phones that couldn't get woken up by the alarms are the kyocera and the atrix. of course it works with the phone on, but it doesn't make sense for me to leave the phone on at night, even on airplane mode the battery will be drained. with the blackberry, it goes into hibernation mode and no battery gets used
Why not just plug it in at night?

Because that would be logical.

i just did that today and didn't use the alarm today so it got turned on at 7:30am, let's see if it holds until 12:00 am which is the time i go to bed. I have seen people on this forum that charge the phone up to 3 times a day, that's insane. No phone should be recharged that much unless you call for 10 hours a day or so.
Sadly the truth is that android isn't optimized for battery life and ios is. Most people like the iphone 4's battery use and get 2 days of average use. Why would a phone with a 1930 mAh battery can't last that same usage?
I am now also turned all the way down the brightness since my display percentage was way up.
I got up at 8 yesterday and went to bed at 1 with 50% remaining. Try letting it run until the phone dies (run a video or something) tonight, I hear that can help calibrate the battery meter. Some folks get down to 5% and the phone just doesn't die for a few more hours.

i would love to have 50% by the end of the day. there is one user that reported better battery life after installing the gingerblur script. i may try this weekend if my battery doesn't improve.
As of Saturday evening, my phone will no longer charge past 88%. Earlier on Saturday, the phone was charged to 100% in my car. We lost power and the phone ran down to 3% before I was able to charge it again.
After charging over 8 hours, the phone would not go past 88%. Any ideas?

I have not tried that. Weird thing is, the battery calibration app reads 4196mV at 70% while charging and ~4200 while at 88%.
Just go to CWM recovery and wipe battery stats. Do a few charge recharge cycle. It should be OK.

Charge to 88% or until you notice it not going any further. Turn off the phone. Plug in the charger and wait until the battery display shows. While the phone is still plugged in, remove the battery. Wait for it to boot up and show a no battery icon (or something like that). Once it does, put the battery back in and leave it for about 30 mins. When you hit the volume buttons, the display will show between 5-10% charged. Anyway, after about 30 mins, turn the phone one and it should show 100%. Re-calibrate the battery after that using the app or recovery.
Are all android batteries like this? I've never had a device with such finicky battery stats. I too have the 88% problem and i feel like im recalibrating every week. I will try again.

I don't think they're all like this..but I know its as annoying as F***. Every morning almost i'm doing the "battery pop out" trick just so that it'll read full. It would be different if it read 95% or something and stuck there for awhile until the battery caught up to the actual reading..but it doesn't. The battery continues to drain at a normal rate, so you basically lose however many % you had initially.
Definately annoying..

so you're having to do the pop-out trick every day? that's definitely not something you should have to do....... what gives with our battery?
Mine did this before and what I did was run it all the way to 0% and it cuts of and will not start, then charge it to 100% with the power off and and then boot it up. Work like a charm for me.

Same, friends atrix wouldn't get past 86%, calibration app didn't work and neither did wiping bat stats. Draining however did fix but damn was it slow. 6+ hours to reach 100%

do you have the same battery issues on your galaxy?
So I've been sitting at 1% for the past hour. Been playing games, have wifi, bluetooth, GPS all turned on.
Thing will just not turn off!
EDIT: Right as soon as I post this, it turns off. Over 1 hour on 1%.
Will recharge tonight and hopefully it works right.
I had this problem for a while but you should know that it will fix itself eventually. The phone is fully capable of re-learning the limits of the battery and after several days will begin to display the correct charging status. Mine took about a week to start displaying 99% in the morning.
This happened after I did the complete discharge, charge, pull battery, charge again, then boot procedure. It was fine for a couple of days then started displaying 82% as a full charge then slowly got better. I'm fairly confident that I'm not leaving anything on the table in terms of capacity either since with moderate use and turning off wifi when I leave the house I'm getting about two days of charge.
Sounds like a jumping battery problem to me.
1. Click on this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1174349&highlight=battery+fix
2. Download juggernault's jumping battery fix.
3. Follow the instructions there
4. if it solves your problem, thank the dude for his contribution to the Atrix community and also leave him a comment to thank him.
heres what you need to do

Already have juggernaults battery fix applied. Thinking this is just some freak occurrence.
EDIT: Drained the battery at work. Charged since 6:30 while powered off and phone charged past 88%. All is well in Atrixland!

No none, I had battery drain but it was kernel related. I get a days worth of heavy usage out of mine now.

Figured I'd follow up. After doing all this ... first recharge went to 98. Second recharge overnight.. 85 Max. WTF
