how to open data.img - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I know this has been asked before but I am kind of stuck I need to access my old data.img as it became corrupt however I have tried unyaffs.exe but it crashes I want to find out what my other options are.
Thanks,
yonu

You could try this program....ext2explore

data.img is not a yaffs image, it's an ext image. You'll need a linux box to edit it reliably.

thanks ext2 worked great I thougt I was suppose to be using the other one.
dumb question I found the files I needed but I can't seem to find the proper location on the phone to put them back they can from the root data in the img files so where should i put them back?

I found it was looking in the wrong place
Edit I was wrong

Sorry to be a pain I fouond it I broke down and used droid explorer to upload the files

ok stupid question as I went to run the program I was putting the databases for and found out that when i deleted and copied the files back over in droidexplorer it really isn't deleting the files. Anyone know of a fix?
Thanks

Android question

I've been searching and searching and really couldn't find a clear answer.
I flashed my phone using method 1 as described in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=593786
Now I am seeing this other I guess they are android releases like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=591104
They post these sqsh files. I already got my phone flashed and running Android is there a way I can upgrade or do whatever I need to do to use the sqsh file in the link I mentioned above? I can't find any clear instructions on how to do this really.
Thanks!
Yes, put the system.sqsh file on your SD card, and create a file called 'systemtonand', when you reboot, the bootloader should pick up that you want to transfer the file and do it automatically.
you may want to add blank file "cleardata" to delete your current data file to prevent conflicts (some system files store items in the data file that may not agree with another system file). there is a cache that, alternatively, can be cleared to avoid deleting your data file, have not tried this, another use posted it but I don't recall which thread.

[Q] Replacing build.prop?

hi!
in order to test something, i need to replace the build.prop in root/system with a modified one. but trying to delete this file with astro manager displays an error message, and just copying the modified build.prop over the old one doesn't work too (nothing happens).
so my question is: how do you replace such a file?
thanks in advance for your help
are you serious!?!?!?
If the build.prop is located on the Android folder IT HAS TO BE A SYSTEM FILE !!!
if you mod the system files you could break android or the system just won't let you do it, you will need R and W privileges to do that.
edit the system files from your PC or just boot up in to windows mobile.
use some common scene next time.
hope it helps!
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
Do you use a cyanogen build?
yes and there is already a cyanogen rom posted with the proper build.prop fixed, so you won't have to edit anything, just search for it.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
mmmh actually cyanogen made things easy to replace a system file, just copy your file into sdcard/android/root/system and reboot.
thanks for your help / posts. but unfortunately they're not helpful.
yes, i am serious! and yes, of course it's a system file. i know as well that modification might brick android.
there are reasons for modifying this file. some people seem to be able to, e.g. for chaning screen point density or modify the data passthrough.
so, please tell me, how can i edit/modify a system file from pc or windows mobile when its within the data.img-file?
thanks for any tips / hints on this.
use root explorer

Thank you VERY much for your help - I finally got it to work by listening your instructions. It is simply different if you have HD2 and plus CM mod. That figures why it was going back all the time to 180 instead of changing it - because it runs from sd card and that's where it needs to be replaced as well ...

How to extract data.img files with PC? Because my Android won't start.

Hi guys,
Somehow I screwed my Android and now I can't use it (android.process.acore force close keeps popping up). I don't mind doing a fresh install as long as I can keep my game datas. Unfortunately haven't done any backup. So, is there any way to do that from PC as I can't start my Android? Just for info: the games are zenonia and angry birds. Thank you very much.

Just copy all the data from the memory card into a folder in your PC(i am sure you know how to mount your memory card , just take it out and put in into a card reader or mount it in Windows mobile), but that does mean all the faults you have might get accompanied along
All the apps you download and install is in the data.img file. Just redownload your build and put your data.img file in there. It'll will be as good as the working system...if that works, just copy over the other folders from your sd card root. I suspect the files corruption is only in the Android folder. Good luck
nope. copying the data.img file to a new build still produces the same result. as I said, I screwed the data.img file.
I think you need to have linux running on your system to be able to view the data.img file because it is a linux filesystem. Download a ubuntu liveCD and run it on your computer OR ubuntu through vmware. I don't know the exact ways to get to the files but this is the start. I think someone already have a tutorial on this somewhere in the HD2 Android general section. Check there. Goodluck.
how to mount data.img
I still have the problem that I srewed up my data.img
Android boots but I only get a black screen.
When pressing buttons (End Key) I can see Menus and feel vibra feedback.

debian40:/home/erich/Desktop# mount -t udf data.img ~/img -o loop

This will work in Windows-based Computer.
Download and extract the attachment.
Run the exe file.
Click new (first icon) and navigate to the data.img you want to check and click to select.
You can extract/save all or select the files on that data.img by navigating through the files on the left side of the window then click save (4th icon) then navigate where you want to save it.
If you need more help, just PM me.

Very handy tool here. Had to try it to see for myself. And it works. You will find all your apps and game's data in the data folder. Just copy the folder for angry birds onto your phone in the /data/data folder and your progress in angry birds will be restored. You can even use this program to backup all your installed apps (.apk) including your paid apps.
disable Autostart - or DELETE Autostart Tools
Yea great way
Thank you
Does anybody know where the "autostart" folder is located under Android?
Because then I could try to fix my data.img.
In WM6.5 its easy to locate,...
I am sure it was a Launcher tool which srewed up my system,...
Guess that this could help for sure other users - when it would be possible to boot Android without AUTOSTART of installed proz

Cant delete CWM backups from internal SD Card

Need some help here:
I need to delete some of the backups I made with CWM recovery. I already have them backed up onto my PC, but need to delete them to make some room. For some reason I cant.
Ive tried root explorer, es file explorer, and my PC. Im unable to change the permissions of the files, and if you look at the pics I attached youll see they have some strange permissions, but I cant change them.
I am able to move the files anywhere else in the sd card folder, rename them, but no matter what I cant delete them. And when I try from my PC it shows them disappear, but they are actually still there.
If there is a way to format the sd card folder I will, but thats not an option in the settings, or CWM. Can someone please help me out here? This is really frustrating me. Thanks

Same, tried with multiple apps too.
I posted this in the other thread, but figured I would do so here in case other people needed the "fix".
Ok, so some good news and some bad news.
The good news is, I was able to put together a flashable zip that WILL DELETE the entire CWM backup directory from the sdcard. It is available here:
http://core.routed.com/CWM_Backup_Wipe.zip
You simply need to flash it via CWM. Easy peasy. I confirmed that the directory/files were all removed, AND the storage space is now available for other files (I checked df before and after).
The bad news is, before attempting to delete the directory, I first tried changing the permissions (recursively) to see if that was a better "fix" for this problem. Unfortunately, even with the directory 777 and the files 666, I still could not manually delete them through the system. Which means, whatever bug is causing this problem is much more severe than a file/directory permission thing.
In any case, until the CWM developer can figure out a way to fix this bug, at least we have a way to manually remove the backups and get our storage space back.
The script in the zip is very simple. It just does a recursive delete on /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup.
Enjoy!

Just saying thanks for this, I hope they figure a fix out soon. Flash worked perfectly, for some storage space back. :good:

[Q] Where is the data.img file?

I have been searching for ages trying to find this answer and although I've found some threads about this file I can't find where it is kept? In the guides it says to backup this file when upgrading the same ROM or reinstalling it so you don't lose settings etc, which is what I want to do. I have ES File Explorer on my phone and have searched the root files for it to no avail!
As far as I know, if you're on NAND you won't have that file. But I think if you make a backup, you can find it in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/your-bacukp .. If you're using cwm.

I'm using the SD method not NAND. I don't have CWM installed but I'm assuming in ROM manager you create a backup from there, which places it in the backup folder you mention above?

Oh, excuse me. You're using SD, then it's probably located under /sdcard/your-rom-folder/
That folder is usually called "Android", but it may differ from ROM to ROM. I don't remember the data.img being on the root of the sd.

Thanks. Is it a file I'm looking for as I'm under the impression it is with the .img, similar to an ISO file? Although in the android folder there is a folder called data, which has several folders in.....is this it?
If it is then I think the extension on the name is confusing me as I thought it was an actual file!
Actually, back in the time when I used to use android SD. The data was stored in a file with a ".img" extension. I am not sure about now, maybe they changed it?
I am not familiar with this "data" folder you're referring to.

Yes, that is it. It may have slightly different names depending on the rom. The data file is used by the sd android as the data partition by a nand android. Your apps and data are generally stored in this file. There can be some exceptions, like apps moved with Apps2sd and similar things.
It is usually good to have a backup of this file.
