What ROM do you use? - EVO 4G General

I wanted some ideas for my next Rom and I was just wondering what you use?

Not to be a **** but there are a TON of these threads already.
That being said, MIUI is the best ROM in existence.

Ditto. Ask a hundred people what rom they are running, and you will get a hundred different answers. That's the beauty about roms, it only takes a few minutes to flash, so you can try a lot of different roms, and if you dont like them, flash a nandroid back to what you had before.

MikFroyo 4.5
But each rom is good in it's own rights. It all depends on your preferences. And yes there are many threads on this topic already. Probably need to close this redundant thread.

hm. while i think the miui is "neato", i would never use it as a DD. IMHO, kinda feels... goofy? just an opinion from someone using android since the G1.
to each, their own. (ps, MH, dont flame me man, i got mad rezpekt for ya. but i will fight. with fists, or CAPSLOCKS, your choice. )

Myself would have to say Cm7 with MIUI as a very close second. CM7 is giving me better battery life by far and seems just a bit more stable. However I love MIUI's polish with things like its lockscreen music player and the cascade effect in launcher settings. Also MIUI gives me the best Quadrant scores of any rom.

The last post in the thread I linked was yesterday. That seems pretty current to me.

That post was posted exactly 1 month ago actually.

Currently on cm7 rc2, it seemed that set CPU had no effect on the nightlies but, with rc2 I'm at 22% and have been off the charger since 630am, its now 930pm. So I like that. I used MIUI for a while but each time I had it, it would start rebooting every 5 minutes after I installed it for a week or so. I'd have to say, in gonna try that new destroyer from magnus, it looks sick!!!! In running the honeycomb theme on cm7 and magnus' rom looks just as sweet if lot better.

I'm lovin' myn's 2.2 at the moment. Came from Fresh which was the only other ROM I had tried until now. I just couldn't wait any longer for an update. I'm glad I made the switch to Myn's.
I'm tempted to give CM7 a try but I keep hearing about bugs and the thing is just so damn fugly.
Until they provide something similar to Sense in the contacts side (FB sync + integration of contact's SMS/Emails/Updates/Info/Etc.), and a decent looking weather/clock widget, I'll stick with Sense.

Spokesman, I am trying here. I thought it would be an interesting topic of what to expect in the future when the release of 2.1 is out. Damage and Fresh have given us HTC Hero owners a look of what to expect. Or even maybe something better.
Actually, the builds we have such as DamageControl and Fresh 2.0 are pretty much what we'll have eventually since they're built off of Droid Eris leaks. In case you didn't know, Droid Eris = HTC Hero

I know that. So then what is the point. What do you think if we were to update, that we would be stuck and would be able to Root.
My answer has changed a lot since a week ago. Now, with DC1.0+, I'll wait. It's good enough to fix my worst complaints about 1.5 and the stock ROM, and I now have faith that its .apk and .odex files really will fix the few remaining problems with the independent builds within a matter of days.
Equally important to my willingness to wait is the fact that I no longer have to wipe everything just to upgrade to a slightly newer build that fixes another bug or two. Let's be honest... that gets old really fast. I might still do a complete wipe and reflash a month from now on the theory that it will make everything nice & optimized, but in the meantime it's nice to be able to just reflash and go on instead of being forced to rebuild everything, every single time.
I know how you feel. I flash and reflash pretty much once a week to have a new look on my phone. I used to have the samsung instinct and I hated the hell out of that phone and with the htc hero I am enjoying it.

ummm all those devs will take the official 2.1 release and just customize it to their liking. the base will remain the same.
Will continue to use Fresh 2.0b2 until the new Sprint based rom is available (and the custom roms made from it).
See thats what I am talking about. When the 2.1 builds come I know the devs will make a **** loads times better.

But if you really think about it, Chris is using ADW Launcher. You could get that from the market. I honestly don't think CM is a big deal anymore. The only feature I want is the trackball wake.
I already posted this video

If you think CM only adds a viable launcher you're crazy and haven't really dug into it.
Everytime I switch back to Google's offering of their OS I'm flabbergasted at how paltry and lean it is.
Did you even bother to read the changelog? UI changes are just a small part of what CM has to offer. There are plenty things "under the hood" that makes the phone way better than the ones running stock Froyo.

The android OS is so minimalist to begin with. Short of changing a few pngs here and there There's really very little reason to do so. The majority of the time on a smart phone is spent inside applications.
The benefits of CM are really all under hood stuff, and tweaks.

so is that pretty much it for ROMS?

Before I rooted I would read all these posts about how great the roms would be after Sprint released 2.1. So finally I rooted this weekend, and as I look through all the ROMs they all have major issues, and a lot of the major players have moved on to the EVO. So is that it. As soon as 2.1 comes to us we are left with a bunch of roms that don't work any better, or worse, then stock? That is unless I'm willing to cut out all of HTC and Google software.
Please give me advice as to what I do with this rooted phone now.

Not all of the phones have major issues if u read a lot of the roms they tell if they have any. Also there r stock roms that can be overclocked. We've had three or four devs leave to the evo. That not the end of the world plus they left with final full working roms. If ur not happy with something then for it itself or realize nothing is perfect and that these devs spend a lot of there free time cooking there roms and get real tired of hearing people complain about something that us free. Be a little grateful. Read, search, to a little homework and then ask the questions u have inside ur head before u post a dumb question
Look around, no one here is going to hold your hand.

I would chalk up the majority of the "user problems" to user error such as not wiping between flashes or bad 3rd party software with memory leaks or preventing the phone from sleeping...
Sadly a good number of devs went on to the Evo, even worse is some left in the mid of new releases without fixing some bugs.
Even though a couple of the dev's have moved on, there are still some great ones working on the hero. There are at least 6 or 7 fully functioning roms built on 2.1 right now and there's even some movement on 2.2.

Anyways, I was not being mean to the devs. I think their feelings are still intact (those who have not left)
As for reading and searching the forums, which the "positive" posters repeat like a mantra.... well I have been reading, I've been reading like crazy, and All I see are problems with the Roms because no one ever posts positive feedback.
However, I gather from those more productive posts here that the ROMs are very good quality. So from here ill try them out myself, and refrain from posting again for the next year.
Thank you and sorry to all those with tender feelings who where offended by the simplest of posts.
Just an FYI for everyone Fresh just put out a 2.5.2 BETA to donors.
I assume he will leave this one in 100% working order before he dumps the hero for good.

I haven't run a damaged ROM in weeks - I went from him to Darch which I feel is the end all.

Aloysius 2.1 is rock solid, fast, chocked full of goodies, and did I say, STABLE. Blows any stock Sprint ROM out of the water. DarchDroid 2.7 is good and fast if you like AOSP. And I liked RegawMOD a lot too (use Honeybun OC kernel for extra speed). Plenty of others out there as well. I really liked the Blue ROM but my Hero won't load it. Just try them and quit worrying about it. Use apps2sd and then nandroid and you can go back and forth without losing your apps.

Cyanogenmod for Vibrant? How close are we?

I've been following the progress of the Cyanogenmod development for the Vibrant lately and it seems to be moving pretty quickly, i.e. there already booting into the main UI, I believe. Anyway, I'm still wondering if anyone out there has even a rough estimate of when it will be available for the Vibrant? Thanks in advance.

Some time in the near, or distant future. One of Cyanogens pet peeves are people asking when it will be there whenever they are able to get it done. All of the dev's have loved ones, jobs etc. We can give estimates all day long ranging from early September to late October/November. Sadly the only ones that do know would be Wes.

What draws you to the UI? cause ADW has the sides scrolling option that TW does but you can use themes and such.
Ive seen the adw drawer. It is very similar and I like the convience of the scrolling bottom on the home screen. But im not too sure of stability. I heavily modded my g1. And from time to time I would get force closes. Im trying to minimize the mods on this phone. The adw drawer is not bad. But right now its not something I want on the phone

The TW drawer is nice, on my phone ADW doesn't load right. When I first go to the tray it gets stuck in a loop where it keeps wanting to load the tray it just can't. After about 5 tries it usually loads. The stock icon's look better than the adw galaxy s theme, and even when I say use stock icons it doesn't use the phones stock icons.

The major thing for me was the bluetooth stack in sense doesn't support the connection for a wii mote, but CM6/7 does.

That's pretty much what it is, and that's what makes it great. It's Android the way it's supposed to be, without all the extra crap.

Um...no.
CM is AOSP plus a whole slew of features that should have been default in AOSP.
CM is far from a vanilla rom.
Have you ever wanted to redesign a thing so it would be right?
Well here it is. The code is there to be touched. The devs have sweated into it. Its not data mining for Google though it can be. It's not spinning frames though it can track context.
Take others' advice and read up.
As for me, I'll know when my transition criteria are in cm.
I heard that it is faster than other ROMS but the battery life is inferior to Fresh Custom ROM and others. Is this true?
Also, call me crazy, but AOSP is just plain and ugly. =/
I get the same battery life on sense roms that I do on cm.
With cm7, there is a 'theme chooser' app which is pretty cool. There are only 3 themes right now but i am sure it is easy to make your own.
Also, there are cool things like quite times, gestures, goggles (prevents you from drunk texting, lol), and settings so you can tweak basically any aspect of the phone.
It really comes down to preference is all. If you havent tried it out you should, you never know if you will like it or not

True. I know that it is as customizable as it gets, but I am reluctant to leaving the aesthetics of Sense behind. I know it can be quite unnecessary, but some of it is actually pretty useful. I specially like how it handles "People" where it syncs the information with Facebook, Twitter, etc. and segregates all relevant TXTs, e-mails, profile updates to that specific contact. Does AOSP have a similar option?
I am not the social network kinda guy so I am not sure. I'm not going to say there is an app for that because I would have no idea lol!
I can totally see someone digging sense, as I have used myn's and it is definitely visually appealing. I have also used MIUI and I can see how people like that also.
You can always do a full nandroid and return to your original rom after you try it out. More or less, just wanted to make sure people knew it wasn't just a plain jane rom
load it up and give it a shot.

I love Sense and can't see getting away from it. But there's so much hype about CM that I'm getting curious about it. What's so great about it or what makes it better? I thought its just a basic version of Android??

I cannot tell you how many fellow CM users that I know that are now engaged, married, or having babies because of cm6/7.

This.
I installed CM on my EVO and got annoyed because it wasn't the Vanilla ROM I wanted. It used ADW for a desktop and the Visual Voicemail and 4G didn't work. Lame.
Of all the ROMS, Fresh (all though probably the most conservative) seems to be the most stable.
