Display Issues

Ill make this plain and simple, im having really high display percentage on my N1 and i cant figure it out. As u can see the picture below, the display % is at a 81%!!! and here is the thing, i have only 4 widgets running. At the time that i took the pic i had the brightness at 30% but even if i have it at 0% display % will always be around 60-75%.
This is what i have on my N1:
Rom: cyanogen 506
Kernel: persiansown uv-oc
So this being said, this display problem is affecting my battery. i get an average of 12-16 hrs which its pretty good, i think but i used to get 32-36 hrs. Can anyone know what could be the problem? Cuz im totally stumped

oh no, i turn it off when i dont use it. i have the screen timed out at 2min, 1 min, 30sec, ect.. and still get same results.

So if the rest of the phone is only using 19% then your screen would then display around 80%. Lets say the rest of the phone is using 50%, then your battery would then display around 50% of battery use. But its still using the same power consumption with the two instances.
again, correct me if im wrong, i briefly remember reading that somewhere. Cause i guess someone had been using the phone with 50% brightness and when he decided to put it at about 10% he actually increased 2% on his display usuage. hahaahha!

On Desire ROMs it's only 17%.. or sometimes lower. I don't really care though.. Lol.

It is all relative, always adding up to 100%. If you're phone/wifi/3g/cell percentage is really low, then the display will be really high. The higher the display is shows how good the rest of the system is at conserving power. The display is the largest battery drain on the system. If something else was higher, or even close to the display use after you've used the display for a while I'd be scared something was wrong.
Let's say you charge your phone, never turn on the display, and leave it sitting for 5 hours. Then check percentage. Cell idle, Android OS, and things like that will be the largest, totalling 100% battery use. But your battery may only be down 10%. Then use it for an hour with the display on, display will suddenly jump up to 80% and everything else down to 20%.
Or in other words. Let's say you have used 20% of the battery (battery level is down to 80%) On the battery usage screen display takes up 90% of that, and the rest of the system 10%. That means out of the 20% you used of the battery, 18% was used by the display, and 2% by everything else.
People think Cyanogenmod is bad because the display is so high compared to other mods, but it means that the rest of the system in cyanogenmod is actually more power efficient than the others. So display will naturally be higher relative to everything else.

I believe this is a known issue with 2.1

so i guess in a way its saving power,right? since it is not didtributing power all over the place.

i think its because of the Screen AMOLED is probably a battery eater, i think its fixed and its called Super AMOLED

Why does "Display" use so much power?

My phone is off a lot of the time but it still uses up a lot of my power according to the battery use screen.
For example, right now my battery is at 45%, 9h 15m since unplugged. "Display" shows up at 48% of the power use. Time on is 58m. On my old Evo, Display was rarely on the top of the list. A day like today would have Cell Standby and Phone Idle at the top taking up over 50 - 60%.
Could it be the auto brightness setting that's sucking power? Anyone else getting these results?

I haven't had the time to try and figure out why, but yes, I am getting the same results on mine as well. Right now the battery is at 44% (9h 42m on), with the Display at 55% (1h 33m display on). Display has always been at the top of the list for me. The next three are Android OS 13% (1h), Cell Standby 13% (9h 42m), Phone Idle 8% (8h 14m)

Mine has been unplugged for about 1.5 hrs, and on for 35 minutes.
Voice Calls: 45%
Display: 33%
Cell Standby: 8%

I'm experiencing something similar. Gravis, are you on auto brightness? If not, what brightness level?

I use a power widget to scale my screen brightness as needed. I'm usually on the lowest setting since I'm mostly indoors but I had it on 100% all day yesterday since I was outside and it wasn't really draining my battery.

I too keep mine on the lowest setting as well. It's plenty bright enough for me. Also, I wouldn't trust those readings...it could also be related to the whole false reading of the reception and battery status symbol. Perhaps software related. Nevertheless, the screen still uses 20% less power than traditional lcd's.
Try keeping it off auto brightness and see how it does...should notice an improvement.

You mean 20% less then an average AMOLED? and then AMOLED is 30-40% over LCD

Guys... You WANT your screen to be the highest thing using battery. It doesn't mean that it is bad. It just means that the screen is taking MORE battery than other things. You need to take it for what it is. A comparison versus other items on the phone. Your screen using that much power is how it should be (think about your laptop... turn the screen down or off, battery goes right up). If your screen was at the bottom, it would mean that the actual PHONE was using a ton more power.

Good point. I'd rather have the screen eating power than say, the GPS. But I guess as long as the phone gets you through the it doesn't really matter, does it?

Does turning off the "Powering saving mode" option under "Sound and display" seem to help or hurt the situation?

Mine is off. I don't like the screen changing intensity/brightness without my permission

I shudder to think that a "power saving" mode would actually increase battery usage...

Indeed.

Most of the GSM models have display at the top, while CDMA have standby and idle.
This is due to CDMA radios drawing a lot more power.

I too am experiencing the same thing... my battery life has been less than stellar, so I have taken it off auto-brightness and am using a black wallpaper to try and reduce the consumption. After being on for 4 hours, (I had to reboot several times this afternoon) my display has used 70%, the next down is cell stanby at 12% I was fully charged at 3:30 today - it is now 10 and I am down to 33% battery remaining, with moderate to minimal usage.
I guess a gorgeous display requires a lot of battery.....

Battery use has to add up to 100%, so something has to take a majority. 66% doesn't mean it took a huge part of your battery. Imagine this, you unplug your phone and then go on pandora for 15 minutes of the first 20 minutes unplugged. Say your battery was at 96ish by then. If you checked your battery usage and it said something like PANDORA: 75%, it means that pandora used 75% of the 4% that has been drained, not like pandora has some type of abnormal battery sucking bug in it (key word abnormal, i'm aware pandora wears on a battery). But get the gist? If it were "cell standby" and "phone idle" that were using the battery, then we'd have something to worry about seeing as the phone wouldn't even be in use during its times of most power consumption.

You people apparently never actually TALK on your phone. My voice calls take most of my power.

for me, i've noticed that installing and moving files on the internal and sdcard memery eats up the battery the fastest.

I can't quote this enough for emphasis.
Use your brains folks. If your battery is lasting all day and your screen is using half of your power draw, then you simply have a far more efficient phone than before.
And over the EVO, that makes a TON of sense. Your WiMax OFDM radio probably used up a higher percentage of your total power draw because it simply uses more power than our WCDMA UMTS radio.
Be happy - not disappointed. It means your battery is mostly being used up only when you actually use the phone as opposed to eating up all of your battery while it's just sitting in your pocket.

Rather than wasting time with not so clever posts, maybe it would be more beneficial to read the first post a bit closer. If you're not using the device a lot, you would expect the Display usage indicator to decrease over time and the other indicators such as Cell standby and Phone idle to increase over that same time period.

Screen battery drain

I'm curious if anyone else is having an insane battery drain just from Using the screen. this is my first Android device after switching from an iPhone so I'm not sure if it's normal but with auto brightness I still get 60-80 percent battery drain. I have a Us AT&T version of the S4.

Having a 5 inch 1080p screen will be the biggest battery drainer on the phone currently im getting 3-4 hour screen on time which imo is amazing

If you're looking in the battery stats then yes, the screen always consumes the most battery out of everything.
Its when an app consumes more battery then your screen you've got some problems.
Its really not insane battery drain, its normal if your screen is on all the time. think of a laptop that s not plugged in it will go for days or hours sitting closed with the screen off but still on but with the screen on it draws a lot of power and your battery life soon goes down to 4 hours.
The percentage it is telling you is also misinterpreted. Its not telling you that 60%-80% of your battery is consumed by the screen
Basically if your battery is at 80% and its saying 80% of the battery is used by the screen its telling you that so far out of the 20% currently used of the battery 80% was by the screen and 2% by facebook and 6% by browser ect.

Screens have always been the biggest drain on a mobile device (laptops included). If you want to minimize this (even though it is absolutely normal) you can try going to the Power Saver settings and enabling the "use low power Screen" or something along those lines. I've set that on mine, noticed a bit of a life increase, haven't seen any difference in the screen... so seems like a win-win situation.

But I used my iphone at work to watch videos, ect while there is downtime. I usually watch while it's also on the charger
For the Note series, does anyone know if that "kills" my battery for long term?
I know you can replace battery, but just wondering for future use.

Issue with battery drain due to android system is real
All three people I know that just got the Note 4 were experiencing the same issue I had with excess battery drain with the always generic "android system" taking more battery than anything else including the screen.
I downloaded an app called "System Tuner" and looked the CPU% for Android system and it was a constant 3-4% when the phone was otherwise idle.
I found a post at http://support.t-mobile.com/thread/80459 where they were experiencing the same issue (lose around 12% battery an hour with android system taking a huge chunk of battery). The person from that post was able to address the issue by turning location off, rebooting, turning location on, and rebooting again. After I did this I saw Android system idle at ~0.6% - 1.1% instead. So far I'm getting much better battery life but I'll need to give it some time to know for sure.

mine took about 2 full days for everything to finish syncing, downloading, indexing, etc. I had books, news articles, pinned music from google play, etc.
Once that happened, everything is now "normalized" and I'm getting better battery life than I was with the note 3.

Short answer: Maybe, it depends on how you are doing it. Using it while it is charging is not necessarily bad but watching videos and keeping it plugged in while the cell voltage is pegged at 100% will likely deteriorate your battery faster.
Long answer + tips:
Lithium ion batteries are great - they are light, can be made very thin and have excellent energy density but they are also very finiky.
Things to avoid doing with a lithium ion battery
-Charging to 100%, leaving it plugged in overnight is a poor practice(high cell voltages reduce the service life*, stopping the charge at 90%[4.10v] can double the service life, stopping the charge at 80%[4.00v] can quadruple the service life.*)
- Discharging the battery to below ~20% (Li-Ion batteries are somewhat sensitive to deep discharges)
-Charging/exposing Li-Ion to elevated temps or below freezing.
*service life is defined by when a battery can only retain 70% of its rated capacity. Most consumer batteries used in mobile devices have a service life of 500 charge discharge cycles.
It is not uncommon for batteries to lose 30% capacity in 1.5 years or less. Changing your charging and handling habits can double or quadruple a batteries life span.

LOL your picture took up have my damn screen on my 1080p laptop with 15.7 in screen. It was crystal clear too.

On my 2nd charge, auto brightness. Pretty freakin' amazing battery life....
15.5 hours off the charger with 8+ screen on time!

I got awful battery life on the first charge cycle. It drained 50% overnight. 2nd charge has lasted amazingly long and I still have 64% after 12hrs of average use.

First charge. Battery life has been phenomenal. Brightness on auto.

I dont know why but my phone goes from 100-90 in less than a hr with minimal use while the screen is set at auto, also in the leaving it unplugged in the night the battery also drains like 5 points.

I've been at full brightness and using the hell out of it non stop so far, and I'm at 35% with screen on time at 3hrs 40 min.

Newly bought S8 and a 4.5h battery life. Is is normal?

So I got my GS8 yesterday and this is the battery life I get with:
AOD off
No battery saving profile
Wifi on all the time
4G network but no data
Automatic brightness
No gaming, about an hour of video playback
Since I can't share outside links I'll just write the info here: (From 100% to 3%)
Last charged: 10h ago
Screen on time: 4 hours and 30 minutes (812mAh)
Android System: CPU total: 3 hours and 11 minutes (312mAh)
This is not even close to what I expected, do you think this is normal?

Normal. It's happened with both my S8 and my G6. Your battery life will get better in 3-5 days. Android is setting stuff up and optimizing battery life behind the scenes.

You bought it yesterday. Give it time to settle.
Also, turn off automatic Samsung cloud backup, it's on by default.

I am 45% with 4 hours SOT. But I have days like yours with 4 hours SOT at end of day... It depends on how you use it.
Also depends if you debloat it or not (no root required)

What did you expect from a 3000mah battery? It all depends how you use the phone, i can empty the battery in an hour if I want.
4.5h is more than respectable, if you want more lower the brightness and use a black theme.

I expected the sot other users (like people from this forum) get. This battery life I got is bkarely better than that of my 3-year-old Xperia Z1!

It pretty much. Also depend on how many apps you installed. If you dont want it run much, add it to smart manager sleep list. My idle about 3hrs/1% man. This is my battery current round and apps list. About 10% wasted battery because I did clear davikcache a few times

This should be normal. with AOD on, my phone takes about 2% per hour, but when browsing webpages, every 1.5 hours costs about 10% of power, watching videos should take more. also, the 1080p and 2k resolution have notable differences. so it seems that the white-background screen cuts down most of battery life, i think.

For an hour of browsing, mine decreases by 15-20 percent! (On wifi and auto brightness)

hmm, i turned my phone as power-saving as possible - brightness is less than half of the bar, suspended all background apps, and FHD resolution. also, after some days of usage, the system should be able to auto balance the power consumption by sleeping some unused apps and some Samsung's system services maybe. so i don't think this is an issue.

Dont believe every sot someone posts here, i've seen a few 8 or 9 hour sot's but i'll bet the brightness was as dim as can be and they used a black theme. Or they were probably reading a book on the phone which uses no cpu at all or using the battery saving feature.
Your z1 also had a 3000mah battery, yet it had a smaller/dimmer screen, lower resolution, less ram, much slower cpu/gpu. How can you be complaining?

yeah, you're right, the AMOLED screen with high brightness and white color is the real battery killer. also BTW, does the 'sot' mean 'screen-on time'? sorry for my bad English...

4.5h is more than enough ! I am coming from a S6E+ it used to give me 2h SOT MAX ! Hated my life with it.

Do you plat Pokemon Go? I find a lot of people I see complaining about battery do, that game is very poorly optimized for battery consumption.
