Anyone Else Getting Crashing Processes in 2.2.2 - Streak 5 General

Howdy all,
I updated my phone to 2.2.2 with help from Broken's and Krad's posts in the "Dell Streak Froyo 2.2.2 Build" and "Root AWS Dell Streak" threads.
It was wonderful the first day but now I've done something and keep experiencing random process crashes. Mostly with the com.dell.launcher.
I was just wondering if anyone else is seeing this or if I should wipe and reinstall.
Baseband: GAUSB1A132211-us
Kernel: 2.6.32.9-perf
Oem: GAUSB1A134100
Build: 14917
I did change the following as per these instructions.
Just noticed that by default, the Stock 341 had hardware acceleration for graphic disabled. Meaning it uses CPU instead of GPU to render graphic (something like that from reading online).
Here's the simple mod/fix:
1. Phone must be rooted, use Root Explorer (paid app)
2. goto /system, change mounted mode to R/W (read/write) if it is R/O (read/only)
3. edit build.prop file, change the line
FROM - debug.sf.hw=0
TO - debug.sf.hw=1
Reboot your phone. Should speed up the graphics... Tested and works for me
** This is a pretty common tweak in custom ROM and definitely not my discovery. Too common now, don't know who to credit.

Were the crashes before or after you made the changes?

I think after.
I am seeing a strange screen that's like the in call screen but there is no person. It just has the interface up.
It goes away if I hit the home button, but it's weirdness.

zero issues here. Did you load the way i said? or did you force via fastboot method?

If it is causing crashes edit it back to 0

Krad, I used fastboot method, no matter how I tried adb would not allow me to, woukd always say not found, permission denied, even terminal emulator gives the same message that is why I think it would b ev better if someone would post the command sequence they on adb or t.e. for us to follow also. BTW I woukd love to have your gingerkrad on my streak unfortunately it doesn't work on mine.

I did the fastboot with the wrong files at first. That got me to 2.2.1 and then I did it your way after I got the md5 thing to run and now I'm on 2.2.2.

Could you post your procedure? Coz I couldn't get it to.work on two computers, both saying not found, permission denied, even tried doing on terminal emulator. I was able to make 2 nandroid backups of 322/341 2.2.2, however when I tried to do a nandroid restore it says md5 mismatch.

Some of it is in broken's thread. Like you can follow my disgust and failures in there. ;-)
But, I need to compile out all because they leave out the actual code for doing it. I had to dog around in a bunch of forums to find all the code I needed.
Clearly I bearly have a grip on how this OS works. Wish it were dos based.
Anyway,
The process com.google.gapps crashed. What does that prices do?

Htcjikelly, my sw spec is the same as yours and I have the build.prop hw = 1 edit too. No problem on my end and I have been a happy camper for 3 days now. I have the White Streak. For launcher, I am using adw launcher ex instead of Dell Stage.

Thanks! I didnt notice any improvement in speed overall (games / ui).
but as it didnt brake anything neither its good to know that hardware acceleration is activated.
Maybe ill run Quadrant later and post results

Downgrading to DI01 modem

So a lot of people who've used the all-in-one DI01 restore package have run into an issue where their phone appears in Windows as a CD drive, without access to their SD card, nor the phone through ADB.
One solution requires the user to reboot the phone tethered to the computer after which everything works properly - until the next time the phone is rebooted. If the phone boots while not tethered, it again appears as a CD drive upon connecting to the computer.
I have two questions pertaining to this issue:
1- Is there a more (or completely) permanent solution? Having to boot the phone tethered all the time is rather inconvenient.
2- For those wanting to restore back to DI01, can we flash the modem.bin file from the all-in-one package separately, and then just use the stock rom and kernel that have been available for months? All the modem.bin upgrades (DJ05, DL09) have been TAR'd, is there anything special to this? Can I just TAR the modem.bin file from the all-in-one package and then flash it with Odin like any other modem file?
Thanks in advance.
I believe the problem is related to the kernel. Has anyone with the problem downloaded/flashed a different DI01 kernel? Or tried the stock kernel from the thread with the other stock DI01 files (not the all in one package thread)?
The problem seems to persist even after upgrading back to DJ05 (modem/kernel/rom), so either it's something other than the kernel, or if it is the kernel, it's then changing something outside the kernel.
About my second question - if I want to flash just the DI01 modem from the all-in-one package, can I simply tar it and then flash it with Odin?
I had the same issue where I downgraded to DI01 and attempted to root phone. My phone wasn't recognized in ADB so i booted back into Mac OSX and sure enough, when i plugged my phone it would read disk not readable and couldn't access my SD card. so i just rebooted back to Windows 7, odin the DI01 package again and it worked again. Go figure...
Honestly, I think it may be more of a driver bug than anything else. Notice nobody mentioning these issues has had them in Linux.
Could be, everyone I've seen with the problem has said they're on Win7 64.
On the other hand, the problem only appears to emerge after using the all-in-one downgrade, so while it's possible the driver is contributing to the problem, something in that downgrade is setting it off.
Edit: Also, people with the problem have similar issues in OS X - the SD card being unreadable when the phone is connected, so if it is a driver issue, it's cross-platform.
I've seen it happen after upgrading to dj05 as well. The only thing that seems to be in common is os x, or windows 7. Very frustrating.

I have this problem also and I have Win 7 64. Maybe that's the common denominator? At least there is a workaround even if it is inconvenient. Hopefully a permanent solution can be found yet....... if there is any testing anyone needs done to solve this, let me know and I'll be glad to help.

Any other ones, from any wallpaper app or the gallery, just won't take. Any thoughts?

Just a FYI that I used the"all in one" revert to DI01 and my PC still recognizes my SD card. I have Win 7 64 bit.
I reverted from the "all in one DJ05" that loaded the stock VZW bloat ware system.
So not everyone has this problem.

Interesting - I wonder what you did differently. The only thing that jumps out at me is that you used the all in one DJ05 first and I didn't - when I did DJ05 and DL09 I did them all individually. Not sure if this would make a difference.....

Here's a possible clue:
The people experiencing this problem say that when they connect their phones to Windows, it shows up as a CD drive. When they open the volume, all they see are some type of drivers and a bootstrap - not files that are on their SD card.
Sounds like what might be happening is that the phone is sharing the wrong volume or partition.

S=Off fails...any help?

I do everything correctly when starting perm root...then i get to terminal emulator and after I do "sh root.sh" I get tgis message:
/sdcard/root/wpx.ko failed (function not implemented)
Any ideas as to whats going on here? Ive never had it do this when rooting .

From some on going research by the fine science team here at the XDA research facility it appears as if you may have a bad eMMC.
There are are two different rooting methods ./gfree and root.sh. It's becoming clear that if you have problems with the root.sh method, Which is a scripted out version of what you are trying to do, and if it doesn't work it's most likely your phone has faulty hardware that will not allow it to work properly. IF i were in your shoes i'd get ADB up and running (if you dont already) then look @ the "post your eMMC thread" to see if you have a bad one or not. If you have a good one use the ./gfree method. If you have a bad one i'd reconsider rooting your phone as the chances of bricking goes up alot.
I am only on my first day of having this phone, so if I have a bad one, I could just take it back to tmobile and get a new one for free.
If its good, can I do the gfree on my mac? Cause I dont have windows.

How do I do ADB for MAC?
The thread on here is for windows....
So I went to the T-Mobile store today and got a new one...so this is 2 MT4G's in 24 hours...brought it home...SAME THING
what are the odds off two bad emmc's??? Something's fishy here, wouldn't one think?

If those are checked it will not work

I understand your theory behind wanting to make sure you have root access. But unless you change the /system files to a read/write point it will not allow you to make changes to it. Which is required for the command to work. If it's not working there is a GOOD chance you may have a bad eMMC and i wouldn't advise rooting it.

Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
if you are using streakdroid, go under spare parts(which can be downloaded even if you are on official rom) and you will see the font size setting. alternatively you can edit your pixel density in build.prop or simply use a pixel density changing app.
I'd been using my Streak for 3 days now. And the fonts are nice and I have no problem with it.
You can always zoom it to fit to you're comfortable view.

I use LCD Density Changer from the market, just search LCD density and you will be able to find it. But your phone needs to be rooted and you also need Busybox installed. Using this method, you will be able to "enlarge" your fonts but everytime you restart your phone, you need to set it again.
The other method is use a file manager (i use file expert), mount as read/write and open /system/build.prop and add a line ro.sf.lcd_density=180 (which i find good enough) in the end. The default is 160. You can go 180,200,240. This settings will persist even after restarting.
Or you can try what sharptv has mentioned about spareparts, although i haven't tried that method.
I found LCDDensitiy in the market , know my fonts is large. Its so pleasure. Thanks. Spare parts dissmiss the fonts change as soon as I go out from him . So nothing done

Yayyyyyyy, well pleased. Must have set the density too high when I flashed my ROM. Was dreading having to re-flash, with the attendant reset and month getting the phone back to how I like it. Simple line edit, and voilla, no more magnifying glass needed. Thanks folks, made my day.
In my case, the lcd_density line was already there, (set at 140), which threw me because I simply scrolled to the bottom and added the line, which, of course didn't work 'cos the line already appeared.
If you find that this technique doesn't work for you, search for the file for the offending line, and simply edit the number (mine now at 160, and perfect)

You can always reflash a rom on top of your old one without changing any of your setup. Just flash as you normally would, but don't factory reset. So you can change your setup options for the rom, then just re-flash it. That even works for upgrading a rom to a newer version, unless the chef recommends against it...
Of course always Nandroid backup first!

Custom ROMs applied as a .zip file can be flashed over your current ROM without loss of settings and apps. Depending what ROM is on your phone and what apps you have installed this may cause problems. Most devs recommend a factory reset to make sure that this does not happen. Usually it is safe to reflash StreakDroid if you want different options. For best results with a custom ROM you will usually get better results if you flash the stock ROM that they base the custom ROM on first, so that you have the correct system files that match the custom ROM, since all of these are not part of the .zip file that contains the custom ROM.
When installing a stock ROM from recovery it is the same effect as a factory reset. You will have to redo your settings and reinstall your apps.
So the advice to flash over the ROM only works if the problem you are having isn't due to mis-matched baseband and if you are talking about a custom ROM.

[Q] Could anyone translate this for me before I flash a radio?

I'm new at this, and I don't want to mess this up..
I hate even having to do this in the first place, but I need to flash a new radio to my phone as my GPS is kaput since I rooted and installed the leaked rooted version of the Gingerbread update (Radio didn't update). However, though I understand how to root and flash a Rom fairly well now, I'm having a little trouble understanding the procedure for flashing a radio. Here's what I intend to follow:
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
How to Flash:
In order for this to work, the HTC Glacier needs to be S-OFF. Flashing the radio with a corrupt file or interrupting the flash, can brick the device, please proceed with caution.
Download the your choice of radio for the HTC Glacier.
Make sure the filename is PD15IMG.zip exactly or it will not work and copy it to the same folder as adb (the /platform-tools folder within the Android SDK folder).
Connect the HTC Glacier to the computer via USB.
On the computer, open terminal and run the following commands:
Code:
adb push PD15IMG.zip /sdcard/PD15IMG.zip
adb shell md5sum /sdcard/PD15IMG.zip
NOTE: The md5 should match up the provide the original download location. If not, redownload & try again.
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
The HTC Glacier will reboot & usually boot into fastboot. Pressing the Power button will put the device into the bootloader.
The bootloader will scan for the radio update. Once it finds the update, select Yes.
Allow the bootloader to finish flashing the updated radio, and reboot the HTC Glacier normally.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Questions:
1) "Open terminal" - What is terminal exactly? I see multiple references to this on this site, but no clear explanation of what it is, or where I get it.
2) "The md5 should match up the provide the original download location." - What does this mean exactly, and what am I looking for exactly?
3) Is there anything in settings that should be set in a particular way before I start?
4) Are there any apps or programs that I should have on my phone before I begin that I will need to do this?
5) Is the 3rd Gingerbread radio in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059347 compatible with this ROM?
Phone information:
T-Mobile MyTouch 4G, unlocked, permarooted, with Wind Mobile Canada.
Android version 2.3.4
Htc sense version 2.1
Kernel version 2.6.35.10-g225de41 [email protected] #1
Baseband version 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M
Build number 2.19.531.1 CL95282 release-keys
I'm heading out of town next weekend and I'd like to use my nav app, but it's impossible without the GPS functional, so any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.
This is what I do? I download the radio and then put it on the root of the sd card and then boot in to the bootloader by pulling out the battery and holding the volume down button and power button. Then you just follow what it tells you

Terminal is an app in the market. It allows you to run commands via the phone rather than using adb.
The md5sum is a quality control check to ensure that the downloaded file was not corrupt while downloading, so that if anything changed while downloading the md5sum (kind of a unique serial number) will not match... Search md5sum in the market and choose one to use and then verify the checksum for the files you download with the check sum supplied on the thread, usually above or below the download, if they do not match the the file is corrupt and will not and should not be flashed! Any other questions, feel free to ask and i will try to help!

I second his suggestion. It's much more headache free than all that other stuff you posted. I do suggest you verify the md5 though, just to make sure you didn't get a bad download of the radio.

And hboot method was easy as could be, though I suppose I should learn how to use adb if I'm going to continue to muck with my phone.
Awesome.

Just keep reading, reading, searching, reading, and last resort ask if you can't figure it out! But read and search more than asking the same questions we answer daily... we are always willing to help those willing to help themselves! And don't forget to hit the thanks button for the ppl that help you too... It makes me happy to see a little appreciation when we help!

Yup. Although in this case I searched a lot, and I managed to piece a lot of it together, but I'm still trying to get up to speed on the tools and terminology though. I mean no offense to anyone on here by this, but I found that many of the posts here are written with the assumption that the person reading it has at least a basic understanding of the procedures and terminology, which unfortunately isn't the case with me. I definitely appreciate the help, and I thank where appropriate for sure.

[Script] WiFi Only (great for inactive devices)

Thanks:
Scary Alien for helping with some of my brainstorms
CPCookieMan for pointing me in the right direction with my initial thoughts for this project
MongooseHelix for the idea of the script vs a flashable zip
This is a very simple script that utilizes the radiooptions command to disable the radio but still allow use of WiFi. I wanted to make it to be run in init.d on startup but haven't successfully got it working that way yet so for now it can be run with script manager. This script can be run as follows:
1. Download the script and place it somewhere on your SD Card. (Maybe make a folder named Scripts to keep things organized)
2. Download Script Manager from the market.
3. Open Script Manager and navigate to where you saved the script then select the script.
4. Check the options for run as root and if you always use wifi only because you don't have service on your device check off Run at boot as well.
5. When prompted by superuser allow superuser permissions.
I have tested this script on my Incredible and my Eris as well and should be universal to run on any android device.
Download Here
If you are using this on an inactive device and don't want the activation screen coming up after reboot and new ROM flash follow these simple steps.
*NOTE: you need to be using a ROM that has EPST.apk (Sense or stock based) in it for this procedure to work.
1. Select emergency call and dial ##778.
2. Select edit and enter service password 000000.
3. Select NAM Settings.
4. Change Mobile Directory number to 0000000000 (Ten digits).
5. Change MIN1 to 0000000 (Seven digits).
6. Change Mobile Country Code to 000 (Three digits).
7. As you back out "Commit the Change".
The guy that made super charger script has a script that can be ran with gscript and used to modify the init file which is supposed to change it so you can run scripts on boot. I think its only for stock roms tho.

Interesting.... this means once my daughter gets her upgrade I can retire my fabulous old Eris and turn it into a PDA and no longer use it as a phone? Sweet! Now I have to strip it all down to be a good mp3 player+.

I'm wondering if it could be done by adding the commands in the init.rc file inside the boot image instead of an int.d script. I think the reason it's not working the way I have it setup so far is that it requires su permissions in order for the command to take effect. I'm still researching other ways but for now this method does work
CS - That is awesome!

I think so, especially for those of us wanting to build ROMs that give our Eris's a second life as a non-phone touch device.
I know i've been wanting to try my hand at building a ROM like that, just waiting to upgrade in a month as my cell is the only phone i've got, just in case something bad happens to it
Hey, just wanted to say thanks. I don't have a use for this at this time but I can definitely imagine I'll have a use for it eventually!
Whenever I take advantage of my upgrade, I'll be sure to give this a try on my Eris. Right now it's my primary device though. Still, great idea CS!
Works great on my rebuilt Eris ..Thanks CS
Added procedure to permanately disable activation screen for non-activated phones to OP.
Just what i was looking for after i activate the new incredible 2! Awesome work!

I saw it too and then kept forgetting to mention it so I'm glad someone did lol.
so exactly what might happen if i run this script on ancm7 rom that does not have the EPST.apk file?

It will work fine without EPST. EPST is needed for ##778 to work for disabling the activation screen. The script itself does not require that apk, it uses the radiooptions command.

I don't have radiooptions in my /system/bin...
But you said it should be universal on any Android device? Do I need a certain version of busybox installed?
