[Q] WM6.5 on Desire Z? - G2 and Desire Z General

Hi all,
Will there be any chance of porting WM6.5 ROMs to Desire Z?
Loved form factor of Z, but i just disliked android.

no offense, but not a chance in hell

it has been done on other devices, but I'm not sure if any one is actively developing a WM os to the Vision at this point.
prepare to get flamed, by the way.. personally, I'm all for cross-platform phones... the more options, the better. kudos to you for having the balls to even bring it up on an android-specific section of xda, hehe.

*Aims flame cannon*
haha, kidding.. Not sure what purpose you would need WM6.5 for when Android is so much better; unless it was employment related, but in that case, wouldn't it make sense the company supplied the hardware for you?

You should give Android a decent chance. There is absolutely nothing I miss about WM.

Like greengoldmello said, not a chance in hell. You'd be more likely to get WP7 or *GASP* iOS *blech* *ptooie* -sorry, I just gagged a little- than Win 6.5, and the chance of that is slim to none and slim ain't around. Unless of course, you want to make it happen. If so, good luck to you sir.

You know, my computer came with Windows 7 on it, but any chance I could get Win95 on here?
But seriously, I highly doubt there is anyone out there willing to put in a decent amount of time towards getting an extremely outdated, less functional OS onto a device that is perfectly fine with Android on it right now.

WM6.5 on Hero

So Android is being ported to WM handsets... is the opposite possible?
I really dig my Hero, and Android is nice, but hands down, I will take HTC Sense 2.5 on WM6.5, 10 times out of 10.
Arent the guts of the Hero and the TP2 very similar... this should not be that hard for the XDA fam, right?
Sorry to burst your bubble, but nobody here really wants it bad enough to put forth the time and effort to port it. Many of us see WM 6.5 as the inferior platform that it is (compared to Android), and it doesn't seem worth it to a lot of people. Another thing is, WM isn't open source like Android, so it would probably be even harder to get working. Sorry mang

Most likely NO, why? time to port all the different drivers , UIs etc. and another reason...is WHY?? WinMo is a piece of sh#@ that is why we are using Android based phones
I love some of the apps on WM 6.5, but it's SO dead to me. I don't ever want to see it ever again, as long as I live.
To answer your question, I doubt it will EVER happen. Ever. The reason being is that drivers would have to be written from scratch on lots of the hardware. There would have to be a bootloader modification too in order to actually load the WM image, which I'm not sure how that could be accomplished without a tremendous amount of work either.
Usually when the guts are similar (as you're right in TP2 and Hero) but the screen is definitely different, there's a trackball, what do you do with the hardware keys, etc. Lots of "behind the scenes" differences IMO.
You never know though, I always try not to say "never."
That would be going backwards, and tje 6.5 ui is aweful ugly with the ugly menu buttons on the bottom. Ohhh dont forget about the lag issues
No, but you should be able to pick up a WM 6.5 phone coming soon to a dollar store near you.
I gotta say I made the switch to android because I was able to boot android on my Touch but going from android to winmo is simply insane...
Why dont you buy a TP2 and use the android build thats out, my friend got it up an running and is now saving for a hero or supersonic. I used to swear by winmo even when the gayphone came out but Android ****s on Winmo 6.5 EVERYDAY
People are replacing WM6.5 with Android for a reason.
Only a fool would go the other way.
This may just be the craziest thing that I have ever read.
I think its safe to say most us here came from winmo, I also think its safe to say after about a day or less we said,"im never goin back to winmo." Im pretty sure everyone meant it too. the winmo guys are still sayin
That their waiting to switch because android is still new and not polished enough lol I was sayin it too lol but I was wrong as hell hence why im here
It would be an interesting endeavor, but as others have said you would probably have trouble finding someone with the technical knowledge who cares to do so. Most android users have experienced WM, but most WM users haven't experienced android. I think what will be interesting is when WP7S comes out, then you might see people trying to get that on our phones.
But really why should anyone want to port WM6.5 on to android phones? For the same reason many hacking projects start: just to see if we can
There's a major reason Android can run almost anywhere whereas WinMo is basically trapped on the devices it was originally developed for:
Source code
The marketplace is finally beginning to understand the power of that distinction.
I understand the questioning since they are porting Android to WinMo phones.. but did you ever stop to think that the reason they're doing that is to get rid of WinMo? Why in the world would you want to put WinMo in place of Android?

they are not doing it to get rid of winmo, its just one of those things thats cool to have, just like any other app.if us winmo users wanted android, we would buy android, i mean why would you go with just android when you could go winmo and have both? it not perfect yet but it is getting better. and standard android is so ugly to me, it just looks so simple{as does standard winmo} without sense ui.but sense on winmo just looks alot better than android sense. just my 2 cents.....

If source code had anything to do with it, BlackBerry and the iPhone wouldn't be so popular.
Android is overtaking WM because it's a better, more consumer-friendly OS with more, better apps.

Truer words have not been spoken regarding why we all left winmo
i think if a dev wanted to he could port wm to the hero or any android phone. but as others i came from webos & winmo and android is by far the best os ive ever used. i also think wm7 will be a huge fail as android is close to dominating the market share right now. i know what im sticking with!
android is close to beating apple, winmo and palm. it has them all running scared right now, that's why apple is suing htc.

XPeria X10 and Windows Phone

The hardware is promising, is there any opportunity any cooked rom like X2 Rom can work for X10?
I don't really see why you would like WinMo on that phone.
Android is a nice platform as well as Windows Mobile. and it got a better market place.
It is probably possible, but then people needs to get they're hands on drivers and so on first.
I hope it meant to be a joke... Windows Mobile is a piece of ****, I am more than ready to forget it for the rest of my life. Ahh and Windows Mobile 7 seems to be even worse, thanks to the removal of multitasking, the sole reason I used WinMo for years.
well when i first saw this phone i was like I GOTTA HAVE THAT PHONE... then i saw it ran android Q.Q and my dream phone got flushed in the toilet before even getting it!!! so its a very legit question if anyone have any interest in porting winmo to it!!! i love winmo and i have so many programs for it... but ill probably buy it anyway even if it got the little green leprechaun in it... or should i wait for a SE wp7s... haha jk thatll be like 2 years from now if im lucky.....
Why not just go with the HD2?
Windows mobile is terrible and outdated, android owns it in every way, why would you take it over WM? Also if you want WM that badly with awesome hardware just get the HD2, thats like people asking for the supersonic to have WM LOL, sure the Supersonic is better a bit hardware wise, but not by a crazy margin imo.

Sigh... WinMo is still the most productive, customizable and functional OS out there. Also, the best busineess solution.
Andorid is still in diapers. Maybe one day it will be able to do as much as WinMo, but for now, it can't.
I agree that there is no sense in porting a different OS to a phone not made for it, except if it's dual-boot, which is cool.

and to the other post i really dont want the hd2... i dont think it is apealing to me the x10 is the nicest design ive seen in a phone for awhile imo! plus in Sweden at least you get the blue tooth headset with it! which is a big plus!

[DISCUSSION] HD2 + Android or WP7, real talk.

Hello everyone!
I'm new here, but have been lurking and scouring the forums for a while now. I'm not a dev or anything, so I'm a total noob when it comes to cooking up roms and such... although I've done pleanty of flashing on different devices. I'm treating myself to a new phone as a late birthday present, and the HD2 looks like the best offering at the moment (or anytime soon) from T-Mobile. I just don't want to be stuck with such awesome hardware, running an OS that will be mostly obselete in a few months.
I've read that MS will continue to support WM 6.5, but we all know their deal... it'll be an afterthought once WP7 is released. I would be fine with upgrading to WP7, but unfortunately the HD2 has two too many buttons to meet the HW requirements (according to MS at this point.)
The main thing that makes me believe porting Android would be more plausible, is the upcoming release of the EVO. The hardware is so similar, it's hard for me to believe that it's not possible. Once the EVO is released, could someone use the Android 2.1 image from it, and modify it to run on the HD2? Again, I'm not a programmer, so I'm probably completely wrong... but would love to be proven otherwise.
I'm just looking for some of you with more knowledge and experience to give me some technical insight before dropping $450 on a new phone that will be out-of-date and no longer supported (for the most part) in 6 months. I would also like to keep this thread on topic, so please don't bother slagging the HD2 and suggesting other devices.
Thanks!
and another thread pops up =(
search the forum there are literally tons of threads about this
TONS especially on android
for wp7 there is no news since march 28th announcement so that means nothing more to report than the initial issues had
this is also in the windows phone 7 forum
if you want the phone, get the phone. Winows mobile is a good and highly customizable operating systme on its own and I like it.
you won't regret getting this phone, I sold my nexus one for it, and I don't even miss N1 (simply because it is not the best android phone anymore, HD 2 the best winmo up to date).
I am also a noob, but I encourage myself very often. Now android can run on iphone, what else would stop those geniuses from creating such miracles on HD2. All I have to do is enjoying the phone from the minute I have it, and stick to the forum.
I wouldn't buy the HD2 purely on the speculation of an Android port. There's no certainty that it will ever happen, and if it does, who knows how long it will take.
There are ports for older HTC models and the iPhone, but you have to keep in mind that those handsets have been out for a while, and have had many months, if not years, of development behind them. The HD2 and the snapdragon processor are relatively new, and development is starting from the ground up. It may take up to a year or more before a functional android port is available, and by then, there will more than likely be better hand-sets out there.

Thanks for the reply!
I've actually searched many times, and read tons of threads on this topic. The problem is, most of them are cluttered with TONS of vague info and flaming, with a tidbit of useful info here and there. I was hoping to open some discussion and spark some ideas or interest, maybe try and centralize the info.
Sorry for stepping on any toes, but this is the "T-Mobile USA HD2" general discussion forum, so I figured this would be the best place to start. I just searched the development forum and found a similar thread. I just didn't check there, as I was intending to discuss the possibility and such, not actual developing. Mods, if I'm out of line here, please move or lock this thread appropriately.
Thanks!
Edit- to the other posters, thanks for sharing experiences with me! I wasn't planning on buying the HD2 soley in hopes of porting Android, I guess I'm just looking for reassurance from folks that I'm not getting myself into a device that isn't worth the effort. I love modding my phones, but would rather not be stuck beating a dead horse in a few months. The feedback is greatly appreciated, and makes me feel much better about my decision.

this is true. android on the iphone only works on the iphone 2g as far as i can tell, and that phone is over 4 years old i believe. building linux kernels for a specific phone takes time, and most likely it'll take years to perfect. the ports out now for older winmo phones are useable but obviously not perfect.
i bought my hd2 mainly because it looks like pure sex to me. hehe. windows mobile didnt bother me at all since ive been using windows mobile phones since 2007. dont get me wrong, android is pretty good too. used that for about a year. each os has its own pros and cons i guess.

you wont regret getting this phone. in my opinion htc did a good job with sense, making windows mobile user friendly and whatnot, but if you dont like sense, it can be easily disabled. also the stock rom to me works fine right now but there are a lot of other roms made for the hd2 already so its pretty customizable as is already.

Cool, thanks for the info!
I usually try to keep from modding straight away, but after checking some roms in the development forum, I'm sure I'll start flashing sooner than later, hehe. The main thing I'm liking about the HD2 is it comes stock with the apps I'm most likely to use. I had a 2g iPhone a while back, but found I didn't use most of the apps I installed, and gave it up for a 3g device. Most of what I'm looking for is games/entertainment and themes, and I believe I've found what I'm looking for. If I'm not happy, I may try to cook up something of my own... there's certainly pleanty of resources here to get me started!
Again, I apologize for the redundant thread, but I appreciate all the feedback. This is exactly what I was looking for!

They have been working on porting linux and android to the HD2 for months now. It's not an easy process, as I have stated in the many threads that get started about this. The EVO rom cannot just be ported over. The N1 is just as close hardware wise... they actually used the N1 as a starting point for creating the linux kernel. The Evo may help a little with some drivers.
You have to understand... the kernel for the msm72xx devices (touchpro, TP2, kaiser, etc.) was started over 3 years ago... and they still don't have a fully-functional android port. There will be an android port eventually, but by time theres a fully functional port, there will be many nicer android phones out. Expect it to take a year or more for a fully-functional port, if it's ever FULLY-functional. Search the Rom section in the original Leo section for the official linux project thread.
Get the phone if you like WinMo 6.5. If not, wait for another phone. Trust me, there will be just as nice Android phones for tmobile in the next few months, and WinPhone 7 phones by the end of the year.

[Q] Now WebOS on HD2?

It seems there's been little interest in previous mentions of WebOS on the HD2, and it's not gone anywhere. I saw that there is development of WebOS for the Hero:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822401
I wondered if it would be possible to use this development to port to the HD2 as we already have the android builds running well? Correct me if I'm wrong- i know nothing about developing, I just loved the Pre until I got close to the hardware!
Someone posted earlier today in IRC the root.img and the source code for that. I'm sure Mdeejay could do something with it.

I've got to admit I've not used it extensively, but I walked into O2 stores and tried the demo phones and it was the most fluid experience I've had. I'd love to try WP7, and of course I've loaded froyo ( and ubuntu) but I've found android frustrating as information just isn't accessible without jumping in and out of an app, and I'm worried WP7 will be similar. No multitasking is a big downer for me- I do loads of work and research on my phone. With CHT2 Sense seems great, if only it was abit more stable! I'm hopeful on that one though! but yeah, WebOS seems so smooth I forgot I was moving between applications.

Go play with one for 10 minutes. You'll quickly see why webOS is a juggernaut among mobile operating systems.
Everything else just feels like **** (pretty much) once you use and have experienced webOS's fluidity and easy of use.

I agree. My nephew has a Palm Pixi and WebOS is truly sweet. Ever since he got his Pixi I have been yearning for WebOS on my HD2. If the Acer Liquid Stream launcher worked better, it would suffice me. But it has some bad issues.
Can we like start a poll for development of webOS on the HD2?
webOS (sorry Google, sorry Apple) is surely the best mobile OS out there. (I Know, I've had them all).
Well one plus side to it, is it supports homebrewing.
What does it take to code a port like that? A bunch of assembly language programming and hardware interfacing? Honestly I have wanted WebOS on any device for a long time. Since it's based on linux, shouldn't there be a way to somehow set it on top of an Ubuntu build/Android build?
And on top of that, wouldn't HP's legal team be raping anyone who even thought about attempting to port WebOS on anything?
http://www.webosroundup.com/2010/12/hacked-webos-appears-on-htc-hero/
According to this source, the entire development on the hero was a hoax. Can anyone confirm?
Any screenshots??
I would be surprised if HP made any attempts to stamp out a port of WebOS. HP has been supportive of the WebOS homebrew scene, and they need to increase their user base by any means necessary. Just like Microsoft with WP7 it's in their best interest to turn a blind eye to this sort of thing at least until their "ecosystem" has a better foothold.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can we have webOS on our HD2's
Its more powerful has a bigger screen and well its an HD2...
the Palms are way to small for such an amazing UI.
Where do I donate to help this along ??????
Forreal..i would also donate myself...
I would love to see webOS on our HD2's. Haven't had the opportunity to use it yet, but I've heard nothing but good things about it. Also heard it's very easy to port iPhone games to and it plays them just as good as the iphone... with HP behind it now, we'll probably be seeing lots of games and apps for that os.

When WebOS

So, any plans to bring WebOS to the HD2, now that it's opensource?
webOS is a good OS, but i hope devs will continue on meego first
What has WebOS got to do with Ubuntu?
What has WebOS got to do with Android or WM?)
WebOS isn't yet open-sourced, HP just said it will do that. No sources are available as of now, and it's silly to ask when it'll be ported to HD2 if we even don't know when sources will be available. But, it might me easier to port than meego, as meego's most interesting version (from nokia n9) is closed-source, and opensource meego is, according to devs, not much usable.

This one looks like kernel (and possibly some other GPL-ed components) sources. And it is there probably since a long time. So no, WebOS isn't open source yet.
Sorry for posting the question here. I thought , as nobody really looks at the meego board anymore, I should ask it here as the guys'n'gals that are into porting Ubuntu to the HD2 are a little more hardcore and thus apt to give an honest perspective on whether or not this could happen. I read on the Verge that someone had it running on the Evo 3D so maybe it isn't that far fetched.
As I have understood some of the UI/UX stuff is not open source yet.
We shall come back to this discussion when it's time for that.
WebOS? I'm still waitng for further development of Ubuntu! Sound? Calls? Magldr?
Bumping for interest and the sake of prosperity for our mighty HD2...
Face it Meego is going nowhere slow, if anywhere at all... With the announcements of nokia going to wp. Ubuntu is making very small but slow baby steps...
So why not stir up a craze that'd baffle the internet media once again with the viral power of what the HD2 can do?
It's been ported to many other HTC devices so why not our HD2? We can't just let it die with millions of android and wp builds and lack of interest in other projects such as linux and meego, so I only see one other hurdle to jump that being WebOS.
Well, we'd have to find someone, who could port it... If I wasn't a total failure when it comes to programming and stuff, maybe I could do it :x
The difference between Android and other OSes is Android is popular and it's rather easy to cook a ROM... But here, we'd have to work from scratch. And nobody wants that. Shame on you, community, shame!
The only thing I see possibly coming next for the HD2 is WP8 (Maybe, if it's possible or at WP7.8) I rather hate WP and still love my huge variety of apps and customability with WM... I'm doing Win95 on it, Boxmax SD XDAndroid Sense and Ubuntu...
I don't see why or how it'd be so hard if so many other HTC's have it running already, get the closest build with matching spec's between the HTC HD2 and whatever HTC is remotely similar to our in hardware, edit it for Android maybe and change the drivers of the HTC (In question) to the HTC HD2 in code by similarity of Android builds for HD2. On a side note, I read that the HTC Evo 4G is the same phone as the HD2 on XDA, so if we could find a WebOS Build for that we'd be off to a good start. Then onto the debugging and next step is glory.
If I knew anything about coding and cooking I'd give it a whack, but I don't know much about it.
+1 on WebOS on the HD2...
I have it on the Touchpad and I love it!

Windows 8 is Windows 7 and we did that already, we'd just be spinning our wheels or going backwards then instead of moving forward with bootable os'es.
If you want Windows 8 so bad on your HD2 hunt around for a 7.8 rom, closest you'll prolly get. Anyways you could get in a whole lot more trouble cooking an OS/Rom onto an unsupported phone that hasn't even been released yet to normal consumer users yet.
WebOS would be great those who aren't ready for Android or don't want it and those who don't like WP, but desire something other than WinMo 6.5.
WebOS is dead...
Still would love to see a new OS once in a while. +1 for WebOS, +1 for MeeGo, +1 for Firefox OS (or whatsisname)
