as im more concerned about video playback, can anybody tell me what resolution it plays without any problem(avi mp4 or mkv with third party player) ?
With the original firmware from sony (2.1)... only 3gp and mp4.
thanks for the reply. and
what resolution in mp4 format?
and what if i flash with custom rom like 2.2 or 2.3 ?
i think i read some review on some website saying it plays upto wvga res videos.
Xperia x8 screen resolution is 340x480.
I read somewhere that it can play HD mp4 with some apps from market (stock player fails to play them).
For the custom firmware:
Its linux, you can do everythink that linux can do but you will have to program it first (codecs). So, everythink is posible.
Well, I use Rock Player universal version and it plays a lot of formats. It plays the usual avi DVDrips (~700mb) comfortably along with subtitles.

exist an avi player for android?
i have done a search for this and have found nothing so far..
No. So far Android can't play regular AVI files. You need to convert videos if you want to watch them on your android phone.
Here's how to do it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=441063
AVI is just a container to hold compressed images, if the compressed images were H264 then decoding and displaying video would be straight forward. However, most of the AVI files I have are divx which the G1 can not decode due to the lack of suitable codecs.
Actually there is a player in the marketplace called android7 avi player...it plays avi from the root of the sdcard...what it does is the first time you hit play it takes a minute while it converts to the right avi format for the player..after that you have a new playable avi
it works perfectly with now problems?
amir
does it convert everytime you try to watch that video file? or just ONCE?

User comments for that app are quite negative: http://www.cyrket.com/package/org.android7.aviplayer
when will we have a good video player for android which plays most common formats?????????
There's this "Yxflash" app from the Market which claims to play avi divx files. I tested it for myself, and it works, to an extent. Videos are extremely laggy so they're not pleasant to watch, but it does work.

Do you think it will lag on Htc desire ? 1ghz snapdragon processor??
ive tried the demo of yxflash on my desire and it worked well. well enough for me to pay for the full version. just waiting for the product key to arrive in my inbox
rockplayerbase-player
try this?

download at : http://www.mediafire.com/?enolzhkrmmy
at least it works on HTC HD2 android port
thanks to the devs
Enjoy
I found an awesome app in marketplace called 'arcmedia'. Works a treat! I was using rockplayer...but this one is alot better.
I use ArcMedia player.. free in market. Seems to play anything. Plays AVI's that Double Twist and others wouldn't.
divx is nothing more than h.263. The hardware decoder on the device is FULLY capable of decoding these. The problem is that divx are douchebags, and instead of using the proper fourcc "h263", they replace it with one of "divx", "div3" or "div4".
If you want to play those files, you do NOT need to reencode them -- just need to FIX THE FOURCC!!! ffmpeg is capable of doing this -- the command would be "ffmpeg -i infile -acodec copy -vcodec copy -vtag H263 outfile"
** if you compile ffmpeg for armv5, your phone is plenty strong enough to handle this itself very easily!

I have used yxflash on my G1 and it works quite well. It looks like it drops some frames playing divx, but it's really not bad at all considering it was never designed to play divx encoded video.
Just a shame the battery life is getting really terrible on mine now. New battery 8 months ago and it's starting to go again. Waiting for the Desire Z now though, so not going to replace it.
rockplayer
rockplayer in market plays .avi
watching green hornet r5 on my nook color with Honeycomb as we speak.
Try QQ Movie player. It works for both my mp4 videos (with some considerate lag on my G1) and 3gp/avi/etc files.
Though Android is developed by the Open Handset Alliance, this smartphone platform only supports H.263, H.264 AVC, MPEG-4 SP and VP8 video format. Hence it is impossible to play AVI on Android phones.
in order to play avi, you can first convert it to android compatible video format
I know coreplayer can play h.264 vids (mkv format) but when i downloaded an anime that was h.264 (mkv 1280x720) it says it can't play.. im guessing its the 1280x720 as coreplayer has a limit.... i could be wrong but anyone have alternative way of playing these files .. or people downloading anime fansubs that are similar to what i mentioned..

I can't play anime, it's the codecs and formats used to compress the videos, Coreplayer doesn't like them. You could always reconvert them?
There's no Windows Mobile phone capable of 720p decoding and it won't be until WP7 arrives. It's not a hardware problem but software (its old and outdated kernel can't see the neon vfp)
You can play 720p mkv h264 if you give Android a try paired with a good player like RockPlayer.
Anyway you can read more related info if you search in this forum.
Cheers
Hi
any news about mkv (h.264) videos whith this tablet?
Hardware is the problem? or android is the problem?
regards
AFAIK, the Vega can't play MKV as this is a limitation of Android (as opposed to the tablet). perhaps in 2.3 / 3.0 we'll see MKV support introduced.
thanks
I can to play mkv with h.264 files, but it's too slow, 4-6 fps only with any players (vital player, meridian, etc)...
saludos
Did you try rockplayer? Have good experiences with it, but haven't tried mkv yet...
You can always use a program like Handbrake to convert it to mp4/h264, which works fine for me.
Remember that MKV is just a container if the base AOSP build of Android suddenly gained the ability to parse Matroska containers it would not magically give you the ability to play High-profile 1080p H.264 video streams, or DTS/AC3 audio that may be contained in the MKV.
Rockplayer and all the ffmpeg-alikes are able to parse the containers but _none_ of them will be able to use the native hardware acceleration and as such will be useless for HD content.

This is the problem
I use vital player, the best for mobii/vega, because I can view all videos with AC3 without problem (divx or wmv with AC3). MKV with vital player are slow too...
The best codec for mobii/vega 720p? mp4/h264? wmvhd? I have a lot of mkv/h.264/mkv...

Funny thing is my first tablet the ZT-180 was able to play mkv 720p high profile with DTS beautifully! It stuttered a bit on 1080p, watchable though. This is on a low budget machine, on the vega it should fly! This was in real player for android by the way. Explain that

I second this. MKV was perfect on the ZT-180's 2.1 rom. Proof that this is not a limitation of android.
hi,
i have installed rockplayer and mVideoPlayer. it seems that they install some codecs because now i can play 720p and partly 1080p MKV videos on my mobii tegra (vega rom + modaco) via the video player that comes with the rom.

Because that tablet its _so_ dodgy that the OEM built in MKV/DTV/AC3 decoding into android (like Samsung/etc) and released it without paying for the licences (for DTS and AC3).
If dolby et al notices then the retailers will get a lawsuit.
Though it does mean that there is Android source floating around China that includes MKV parsing. Latest Gingerbread update add WebM so lest see if that comes with a full matroska parser.

Advent Vega 1.09 ROM + MoDaCo r8
when i play the movies with rockplayer or mVideoPlayer it's slow, too. But with the original player it works fine. Don't know why
Hi all
Apologies for the thread revival. There's no need to use any third party apps to play MKV files, you can play MKVs using the built in media player. I use Astro file manager and do the following: navigate to file, long-press on the file itself, select "Open As", select "Video", then choose the default media player. It might be easier to have the app recognise it as standard, but this method works. I've tried quite a few 1080p x264 vids and the only thing the Vega struggles with is the audio codecs - it supports AAC, but AFAIK it doesn't support AC3.
EDIT: I should probably mention that I use the default 1.09 ROM, modded with MCR R8.
The reason that third party apps probably get a low FPS is that they do not use the Tegra2 hardware accelerated decoding - the built in player does however.
The core Android system actually supports the MKV container format - it's listed on the spec page; I guess implementation is obviously different for each device. As someone pointed out though, the important thing is the codec in use for each video/audio stream; MKV is just a container format.
Is there a program which can link file extensions with app s?
I believe that mVideoPlayer literally just makes the mkv format available/viewable/whateverable in the stock player, so if you install it, you should just be able to play mkvs in the stock player (mVideoPlayer does not have any codecs, so it will only be able to play the codecs that your device can already play)
most devices can play H264 mkv, hell my phone can even play them with one player or another, the issue here is decoding, the vega simply cannot decode h264 high profile video hence the slow framerates as the player has to switch to software.
Suggesting this is possible by switching to the stock player is just nonesense, those that claim to have good frame rates are NOT playing h264 high profile, the hardware cant do it, period, end of thread.
Note: most "ripped" MKV films / tv files (1 gig usually for TV rips 6 gig + for films) that can be downloaded in 720p and 1080p will be encoded in high profile, you simply wont ever be able to play these with decent frame rates without re-ecoding into a codec tegra can handle like H264 main profile - unless the open source VLC team manage to create their own CPU optimisations when VLC finally come out, even then it wont be buttery smooth.
give it up people, you are going to have to re-encode or not bother using it as media tablet.
Anyone manages to play most 480p/576p.H264.mp4 files in blackstone via windows media player? in what rom and how to? Thanks...(I have great trouble playing mp4 files. The wmp which exclusively supports H264 acceleration always gets nothing but sound, coreplayer simply cannot play the aka files, and TCPMP skips too many frames.)
Or can an adroid system solve this problem? I've tried a lot, none of them is able to play video files.
I have the same problem, too. I cannot watch videos any player skips so many frames what resolution, player and video format should i use to watch videos ??
Use Touch HD encoder guyz. Nothing is better than it for our HD. 800*480 resolution, h264 mp4 format and no frame skipping problem-or other-.
Hello, I own a HTC Touch HD. WM 6.1 stock rom.
I want to watch some videos but I can't because if i convert it with MP4forHD any video quality I may choose it has video / sound sttuter in it so I can't barrely watch someting.
Tried to download some 720p video from Youtube. Converted them with that software but still doesn't work , furthermore I tried to get a full movie (Avi XVID , mkv ... ) but still i get that sttuter. As I remember it was a time when I could watch any videos without sttuter using the same software. I use pvPlayer and TCMP 2.3.
Is there any solution for this?
Cheers.
Try Core Player. just google it.
