[Q] Can't soft reset - HD2 General

Please forgive me if this has been posted. I searched but could not find or I am using the wrong things to search by.
When ever I perform a soft reset the phone vibrates 6 times and then does nothing. The LED light is a solid green, but the phone does not power back on. I have to pull the battery to get it to work. However, I can power off the phone and power back on with no problems. Any ideas what is going on?

I know you probably do not want to hear this but sounds like you might need to do a Hard Reset.

Tried that and it did not work. I actually came across this problem while trying to HSPL my phone. When I ran HSPL3 and the phone attempted to boot into bootloader it would shut off and when it turned back on I got the 6 vibrations and the solid green light and no tri color screen.
So I loaded bootloader on my own, flashed HSPL3 and then flashed custom ROM. All was working fine until I had to softrest due to an app instal. When the phone reset it did it again with the vibrations and green light. I had to pull battery and then power on.
Thought maybe a bad flash or bad HSPL, so reverted back to stock via SD card and on stock ROM I took back cover off and reset via the yellow button and same thing.
The weird thing is that in boot loader mode at the top of the screen in capital letters it says "SECURITY UNLOCKED". Saw this before I tried HSPL. This is a warrenty replacement phone and my original did not say that.
I can power off and power back on with no problems and that is what I will do, but it bothers me that soemthing else may be wrong with thsi replacement phone that I don't know of.

Wing needs resuscitation

My wing died on me big time while flashing a WM6.5 ROM.
Wont turn on, wont light up at all when plugged in, wont be noticed by computer when USB'd .
I tried multiple reset tactics, but nothing gets the phone to show any signs of life.
Any help?
I figure I cant use a gold card or do anything at all if the unit wont even turn on in the slightest. I have tried a charged battery from another wing as well.... nothing.
Can you get it too boot up in bootloader mode? Press the power button while holding down the camera key until you see a 3 color bootloader screen.
Also, was your Wing HardSPL'd before you tried to flash this ROM? Which ROM was it? Did you use flash center or an RUU? More information is needed if possible.

I cannot get to the bootloader screen.
I did not have hard SPL before trying to flash.
The ROM I used was choi3es WM6.5 at the link below
http://thewingster.com/wm65.aspx
I used flash center.
Oh dang, here I was thinking you where some kind of n00b. My apoligies...well yes, it seems that you may have just had a bad flash, try hitting up the Wiki for the instructions on making a gold card...that may be the only way to fix the old girl.

Same with me. No sign of life in my Herald.
No lights even when you connected to charge (wall charger or PC), no bootloader,
Do we have any luck of recovering.
Is there any JTAG solution for Herald.

Helppppp HD2 Well not boot up anymore

Hey,
I had my HD 2 for 2 days now.
It just crash on me for the first time soft rest the unit now it well not boot up anymore stuck in the HTC with white background screen and the rom version at the left bottom side.
Tried removing battery nothing still stuck.
I tried to hard rest the pda but cannot get it to hard rest.
Can someone explain how to hard rest what do you have to do hold the volume key up or down and switch the unit on tried it but nothing.
Please any help.
Thanks
Gigino
Have a look here (point 15) on howto do the reset(s)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583638
Good luck..
Same as Gigino, my HD2 is only giving me white HTC screen. I haven't even had it long enough to connect it to my pc. No messing around. It locked up about 5 times in the 5 days I have had it. Each lock up was only resolved with the battery removal. Curiously no lockups until I set an alarm.
The difference between my issue and Gigino is that I do not have the rom version showing up at reboot, just the white screen. Hardware issue, or software?
Followed the Hard Reset procedure as outlined by HTC and your link above. The reset commands are recognized, but after reload, back to white HTC screen.
Bricked?
If you cant get functionality back by taking the battery out or by soft or hard resetting then theres not much more you can do. You could try taking the battery out and giving it a full charge with the mains charger provided but I dont think that will do much good.
As long as you havent flashed a new rom with the goldcard then call your service provider. If you got a sim free phone then call the place where you bought it as its covered by warantee. You should be able to get it replaced if theres a fault.
the same thing happened to me after 2 weeks with phone, I'd had no problems with the phone then one morning while using opera it froze. I had to remove the battery to try and reboot the phone but it wouldn't boot past the htc screen. eventually after removing the battery several times the phone wouldn't even turn on, also the phone got very hot with the battery in. I called htc and told them and they picked up it for repair. it looks like they couldn't fix it cos they sent me a replacement phone. they returned the phone to me within a week.
HTC White Screen of Death
Thanks, guess I feel a bit better knowing it wasn't anything I did..and that I am not alone in this world of WSOD
I have contacted the seller and haven't heard back yet. I don't imagine it will be a problem. Perhaps above and beyond the alarm clock/freezing thread a WSOD thread is in order until it is determined if they are related.
Thanks all.
GR8
Update;
I pulled battery and replaced so device is off. Charged over night and the orange power charging light didn't go off or go green by morning. device was hot.
Get this though, when I pull the phone off the charger the orange light doesn't go out!. Now the phone won't turn on either. Had to pull battery again to make orange light go out and when it powered back up, back to HTC whit screen.

I don't know what is the cause.
But it is really pissing me off.
The only solution out is to do a "hard" reset by holding volume up and down TOGETHER while doing that .... press the power on button for about 1 second ... then ONLY let go the "power on" button which still hold volume up and down.
You should see the screen to restore to factory default .... and proceed to do so.
I have encounter quite a number of times but after trying various "solution" ... it still happens.
By the way, I am using cooked ROM (which I don't think is the problem).

I encounter similar situation .... was installing the new taskbar .... then it took very long ..... so while the installation in progress thingy is still in the middle .... I did a soft reset ... then it start up till the white screen and stock there and showing the ROM version etc at the bottom left.
So have to do a Restore to Factory Default to get it up and running again.
Seems there is something really wrong with this model.
I have it for two months now and lots of issues.
Now it is with HTC for repair as I also have the white screen with green HTC issue.
Nothing helped Hard Reset nor flashing rom.
I can't wait to get it back ;-)
Tons of issues with this phone, but my love for it is just a bit bigger than the hate.
hello all gettin frustrated here too bout a week ago my brick started and stopped on std rom reflashed duttys 1.3 and new radio.was fine for a few days then it seemed to crash and hard reset by itself.now i have a crash every day which inccurs a hard reset very annoying........gets stuck at boot screen as does every ones.now if you if your like me and have HSPL,cooked rom and upgraded radio.....sorry htc....and are sending it back for repair, you should still be able to activate bootloader mode and reflash std rom/radio.if its like mine after flashin it might behave as normal again untill next crash.so.........
1. Turn your phone off
2. Press and hold the VOLUME DOWN then Press and hold the POWER button. After about 3 seconds the tri-coloured screen should appear
3.connect it to your pc it should install drivers.the screen should now say "USB"
4.reflash with std rom/radio (should be located here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=577717 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611787 and bingo HTC are none the wiser and it may restart again if it does dont trust it!!!!!!!!
i think i read somwhere that a shipped rom will remove HSPL but you might want to clarify that with a senior member here.

If you flash a shipped rom via activesync as you described then the HardSPL will be left intact and HTC will be the wiser and will invalidate your warranty.
The only way to remove the HardSPL is to flash a shipped rom via microSD Card which will flash the shipped rom, radio and spl back and will leave you with a stock device.
White screen with HTC logo is a hardware defect
I also have the issue with not booting HD2 after less than a month of use . It shows white screen and green HTC logo but without the red digits in the bottom part of the screen. And one more strange behavior to mention - when phone is switched off and I connect it to the charger it starts itself after 30sec approximately.
What is inside:
Original SPL with an original ROM but for different region than the one which originally was inside. I flashed it by SSPL (without using HSPL).Only ROM was flashed without radio as radio was the same.
What checks were done:
1)Soft reset
2)Removing of battery
3)Hard reset several times
4)Flashing back with the original ROM through ActiveSinc and cable from computer. As the original SPL is intact this should return it to the factory condition. After flashing I did 2 hard resets. But no change - still showing white screen on boot up.
Finally I gave it to the repair workshop. They confirmed that this is a hardware problem and sent it for repair in authorized HTC service.
Suggest that this is a problem with a bad soldered chip (integrated circuit) during manufacturing of the PCB. In this case the power controller chip is suspected. The contact pad of the chip and solder are touching each other and phone works. With the time passing the contact surface oxidate and contact is lost. So initially the phone will work but reset itself occasionally while the contact is instable and will stop fully to operate when the contact is completely lost. Only replacement of defective PCB can rectify this problem. Trials to re-solder the chip are usually not successful. This is purely manufacturing defect. However sometimes it may happen if you drop down your phone.
i had same problem, it was stuck on first white screen with some version numbers in red in bottom left.
I did a hard reset and it got fixed.
i had not installed anything or flashed anything. it just got stuch at that screen 1 fine day for no reason

WSOD FIX
To all the people having WSOD issues, check your microSD cards. I had this issue while ago with the white HTC screen and NO RED TEXT and I norrowed the problem down to my microSD card. When taking it out of the HD2, it would boot up fine. So I plugged my card into a USB adapter on my PC, formatted it and then put it back into the HTC. Everything worked fine.
EDIT: My HD2 is a T8585 and is unbranded bought from UK. I have always been using the stock 1.66 WWE ROM
I have exactly the same prob as camo.b, and right now I`m formatting my SD card, hoping that I'll be able to at least restore the SPL so that the warranty will still be available. I'm bringing it in tomorrow, if everything turns out to be fine with my SPL...

My HD2 will not let me flash anything, even though I can get into the bootloader screen. Right now it's semi-bricked, and I have tried flashing a stock ROM via both usb and sd card, I have tried using task29, I have even tried uninstalling HSPL, but nothing works. Everything fails, either at the beginning, at the middle or at the end of the operation.
I flashed it with a shipped rom and he works,
I was unable to do a hard reset with any card still in the device. be sure both sim and sd card are removed, then reinstall battery and follow vol up/down etc. procedures. good luck.

I need some serious help.

My Nexus one won't turn on. I tried flashing RADIO 32.24.00.22U_4.03.00.21_2 that I downloaded from Modaco.
After it failed to install showing the error message like
"Multiple Radio images"
and a few others I try to reboot it.
when trying to reboot it there showed a picture of a android and a orangish arrow and a box.
Help...I think I bricked it.
Help?
Please?
Can you get into boot loader? Hold down the track ball, then power on, and keep holding down the track ball...
Also, try holding down the "volume down" toggle button while powering on if the track ball method doesn't work...
If both don't do anything but take you to that same screen, let it sit on that screen for a bit, say 10 minutes just in case...
If still nothing, see what happens when you plug your phone into your computer with the data cable, is it recognized? If so, can you get ADB to recognize it?

well I tried plugging it into the computer, I tried the wall charger, and nothing seems to work. The LED doesn't come on, and the button combination doesn't work. So I think it's dead for good. :C Before everything got screwed All I saw was a box and an arrow pointing at a android. Which I think meant it was unboxing. I then thought it froze so I tried to take the battery out, and after that it didn't turn on anymore. No LED, no recovery, no nothing. :C Quite sad.
Why the f are so many people intent on taking their batteries out while the phone is updating? I'm not saying that led to the bricking...but it probably didn't help.

This part takes a few minutes. I am not totally sure what is happening at this point but I'm assuming it's not good to remove battery during this. Mine sat on that screen for a few min and then finished.
Try to boot up with volume down button held. Then use volume arrows to choose recovery and hit power.

Everyone expects everything to be instant these days... "Uh oh! The screen isn't doing anything, it's been at least 20 seconds! I could just wait and leave it for a few minutes like all the guides say to do. Or I could take my battery out...how could that hurt, right?"
For me it took a good 3-4 minutes on the screen with the arrow and the box.
Anyways, if you can't get to the recovery then you might be buying a new N1.
ahh it took like 5 minutes for me, I have to admit I was a little worried since you dont see status bars or anything, but like said, the guides warn for this.
I cant imagine that removing the battery broke it though, he should be able to load a recovery image
I feel sad for him so bumping

If you remove the battery during the period he did, which is when the phone is actually flashing the radio ROM, yes removing the battery can and likely did break it for him. There are 2 ways to brick an Android device, while flashing a radio ROM and while flashing an SPL...
OP, have you tried any of the button combos we have recommended? Have you tried putting your battery in the phone, then without turning it on, putting it on the charger to see if it can charge the battery at least (you said it wasn't even turning on, which is likely because you have a dead battery)... charge the battery first, then try the button combo's we recommended.
And please, when you report back, and not to sound like an ass, do so clearly and systematically (I can't tell from your posts what did or didn't happen, and whether you tried anything we suggested, nor what the current state of the phone is)... so, please use this format to make it clear to us trying to help:
Battery: Charged or Wouldn't Charge (LED will come on if it is charging)
Trackball+Power: Booted into boot loader, yay! or Went to the damn box
Volume down+Power: Booted into fast boot! or Went to the damn box
And remember, you have to hold down the button, either trackball or volume down, then press the power and keep holding down the trackball or volume down until it either goes to boot loader or it goes to the box screen... you might want to even wait for a minute on the box screen(if it goes to that) while holding down the button to make sure it can't get into boot loader...
Okay so I took the battery out, put it back in, and tried charging it. The Battery LED did not come on, so I'm guessing it's not charging.
The Trackball+Power did not work.
The Volume down+Power did not work.
I think I most likely broke it, due to the fact that I took the battery out while it was flashing the radio ROM onto the phone. I kinda did it on a impulse, which is my fault. So do you think it'd be possible if I did contact HTC they'd send me a swap, and not be able to make my phone work or turn on, and everything will go on as if I "broke" it and not unlock it or anything?

It sounds like you have a true brick... disruption of the radio ROM flashing causes lots of bricks, and did so for you.
It is pretty common, at least with T-Mobile with the G1, to call them up and tell them your phone asked you to update, and while updating it froze and won't turn on or charge anymore. Not sure if HTC will handle it the same as T-Mobile did, but if they do they will just send you a new unit, you send the old one back, and you are back up and running... they might ask that you send it to them first, but there is no way for them to test if it was rooted/unlock boot loader if it can't be powered on, so you should be fine.
Sweet. So I called HTC, and they said they'll repair it, but I asked for a swap instead, so I'll be getting one by either Wednesday, or Thursday. Good stuff! I'll tell you all how it goes. :] Now I am stuck with my Nokia N95. Thanks for all your help.

Yeah, he doesn't have to tell them... but they don't have to cover his phone either.
If they find out it's unlocked after the fact, they can charge you to repair the phone.
How exactly will they know he unlocked the bootloader if the device cannot even properly turn on, unless htc has other methods of being able to "restore" the phone, then he should be rather ok. Am I not looking into this deeply enough? Can the phone turn on with a new battery or something? Does HTC have alternatives ways of checking?

I can't understant why doing that the device has unbricked, I probably must do the same.
anyone else tried?
is this really working???
can anyone other than the OP confirm this works? what showed up on the screen when it was bricked? Did it have the 'arrow coming out of the box' symbol, when the phone was switched on?
i did nt get big arrow or anything my phone wouldnt boot period all i kept getting was a blue light no fastboot or adb would work until i did this the only reason i tried it was because someone mentioned to me to replace the track ball i dont know why but it worked
Did you happen to remove the little battery when you did this?
no i only disconnected the cable leading to track ball the if u look where the track ball is you can pry and pop out the track ball i did it just to look around in there ...i am not a tech but i do have a basic understanding of somethings and i think for some reason in my situation it may have reset something i really dont know but my phone was a brick for half a day with me trying to use google as my friend typing away at fastboot and adb commands only to get nothing ..but when one person told me i may need a new track ball i just decided to look inside on how that a bad flash would effect the track ball but i did what i did and i am back using my phone but i did notice one thing today i had put my phone in fastboot and the normally when it loads those command or whatever about loading img. ...its now saying no image
Thanks, I will try this. Unfortunately I gave away my battery and cable... I still have doubts about this helping me, as I flashed the wrong radio. Where as you just flashed a bad update.

hi,
quick question. my friend rooted the phone and then flashed hardSPL but i think it was the wrong one. the last thing we saw was a box with a arrow on it and the phone has been dead ever since.
was this the same for you ? we would love to be able to unbrick his phone.

hi,
i have a 32b magic, and since yesterday it just doesn't startup anymore.
i just get a black screen, with backlight on. (also no adb/fb/recovery)
if i hold trackball while power on, i get the blue led
i've searched, but haven't found any similar problem, cause i don't get that box with an arrow.
to unbrick this, you just disconnected the trackball?
pls be more specific

Sounds like you erased or flashed an invalid SPL (usually people brick into boot mode 3 where the radio + SPL works but is forcing the boot of a broken recovery image) Thus the user becomes stuck at the splash screen.
Regardless if blue light mode woks and nothing else will boot [and you are not stuck in blue light mode]:
the only option at this point in time is using JTAG to force an engineering SPL to load.. then use that to fix the rest of the phone.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6100287&highlight=radata#post6100287
The OP likely had a stuck trackball.
Holding the trackball when you power on puts you in the blue-led mode and doesn't let you do anything else. Being in blue-led mode doesn't mean you are bricked, it's just a mode in which the phone can start up. If the op's trackball got "stuck", it would explain his problem. Replacing the faulty trackball likely is what solved his problem.
It would be nice if the OP could update the first entry to reflect as much.
If your phone isn't voluntarily going into blue-led mode on it's own, this "fix" likely won't do anything for you. You still have a brick... like me

hi terry ...
quick question.
the jtag de-bricking that everyone is mentioning is said to work with g1/dream/g2 ... is this also possible with the magic(sapphire) 32A ?
like i said my friend bricked his loading hardSPL and the phone is charging and i can get into the blue led mode no problem.
if it is possible would the pinouts be the same or similar for the magic? i am quite keen to give it a bash if i can be pointed in the right direction.
thanx in advance.
Thank for you response
but i didn't flash any new spl or something else.
i had my phone working fine with spl/radio/rom.
but then i shut down, and after that i couldn't power up
i reboot my working magic with froyo and then is dead.
its keeps rebooting and no fastboot or recovery mode only if i press trackball and on the phone i got blue led, any solutions ???
Regards Sn00py
But what exactly was the problem, when you turned it on it automatically turned the blue led or did that happen when you pressed the trackball+power? im going to try to debrick my magic now but must it be on with the blue led or off?

Who are you asking, the OP? They just had a stuck trackball, so they couldn't boot normally.
It doesn't matter, just continue.

HELP!!!

Hi, I recently installed TyphooN CyanogenMod 7 v2.3.3.. I was texting yesterday and it randomly restarted by itself...it usually does that once in a while so i ignored it. However, this time, it kept restarting non-stop and my android won't boot, so i decided to install v2.4.1 on my phone since it was in my SD card anyway... now when I try to turn my phone on, it just vibrates CONSTANTLY non-stop with a blank screen until I pull the battery..
I tried letting it vibrate till the battery died but its still the same thing. When I connect it to the wall charger, it seems like nothing happens.. when I connect it to the computer, its the same thing as turning the phone on..
Please help, I am phoneless right now,
Thank you
Unplug your phone from charger than press and hold Volume Down button and turn the phone on.
The phone should boot into bootloader mode.
Now connect it to the PC with USB cable and flash WM ROM.
After you can start all over again and flash Android back.

Try this...Pull & keep d battery out of d fone for abt 2 mins..then pop it back in..
Enter bootloader mode..
Perform a Task29...the one by "doloop" wipes ur phone memory clean without affecting ur previously installed HSPl or Radio...
Re-Flash a rom of ur choice.

i kept the battery out for the entire night, put it back in this morning, pushed the power button and same exact thing.. ]:
Might sound really obvious but try hold in the little reset button on the back of the phone for like 10secs and see if anything happens. I had the WSOD and looked everywhere for a fix then I just did that and it worked. Goodluck.

I left the phone on vibrating until the battery died... Charged it and left it out of the phone this morning until now and the phone won't even turn on when I press the power button now....It just doesn't even respond :|
Kick your phone in the nuts and try again
I wish it was that easy ):
You can't go to bootloader? What radio version u are use?
HD2 TMOUSA
rom : TyphoonCyanogenMod 7
radio: 2.15.50.14
LINTEAM LEADER(gpu dev)
Keep your phone off.
Hold Both the Vol up and Vol down buttons and then press the power button...
That'll let you do a hard reset.
Not sure if it'll help... but can it do any more harm?
My phone doesn't even turn on anymore.. I can't get into bootloader.. it doesn't charge either..

I sent an email to HTC today..hopefully I can fix this... I had HSPL installed so it voids my warranty if I send it back correct? ):
