Glacier internal storage question - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm coming from the G1. You could run "cat /proc/mtd" to get the layout of the internal storage device.
It looks to me like the glacier is using /dev/block/mmcblk0 for internal, and mmcblk1 for the sdcard.
'fdisk -l' shows 60 partitions on mmcblk0... Is that even correct? Can someone give me the quick explanation of the how the Glacier is handling its internal storage device?
Thanks
(and I did try search first)

You are correct mmcblk0 is internal and mmcblk1 is the sd. I discovered this when creating an ext partition, it seems that a2sd scripts rarely support it by default (a la g2). Also, clockwork doesnt seem to properly support sdext dalvik clearing, which is specifically a complication for regular ROM flashers.
I'm not sure about the exact number of partitions on the RAM/Internal storage blk.

do i see a super wipe being built>?

I sure hope so! Used it regularly on my g1

Looking into it...
It appears to be a complete rewrite at this point if I want it to actually be writing zeros to the disk at a low level. The statically linked 'erase_image' executable uses the /proc/mtd file to get the partition boundaries and that file is now blank.
I could probably toss together a script that will run "rm -rf" on all the mounts, but I assume anyone with 10 spare minutes can do that...
I will just need to do some more research into how the Glacier is setup. Unfortunately (for you guys) my baby is able to crawl now, so when I'm home I spend alot of free time chasing her around and keeping her out of the cats' drinking fountain.

Do you seriously need it on the G2? I've got 86 apps installed and I've still got 780MB free, and that's on a Sense ROM (which has considerably more bloat than CM does).

Have you tried Settings.. Cyanogen Settings.. Applications.. Allow moving?
Then maybe you have to go into normal settings, applications, then move them to sd from there?

That's apps2fat, by far the worst method for storing apps. I'd rather keep them on my phone. It doesn't mount at boot like app2ext, can't store widgets, and something like 1/2 or 1/4 of each app (not to mention the dalvik, data, cache) is left on the phone. Aside from the data and cache, none of that is left on the phone with app2ext - and there's a way to move that stuff to the ext partition too. I had it on my slide - to not have it on the G2 is just sad and the 2 gigs of memory excuse is just lazy.

Agreed. I'd rather repartition my SD card and have the apps run off of a partition than have them on a FAT32 partition. I have the apps that start at boot still on internal memory. I'd love to see A2EXT.

Well we had this issue when I used my slide. I have a guy in those forums that's working on getting a boot.img for CM 6.1.1 with app2ext activated so we can have it. All well have to do it replace the boot.img, flash an activator package and run a few commands. He's getting a G2 also so we'll see more a2sd stuff for the G2 soon (hopefully).
Great effin news! I'm starting to get worried regarding my memory. I really wish they would unlock the gb. Its kinda dumb that they save it for future updates yet I'm sure when we get gingerbread we will still have 1.28gb or whatever it shows on the phone.
Does anyone know if the real gingerbread update is suppose to unlock our memory since it IS THE UPDATE?

Well no luck yet from my buddy (acejoker25000 in case you were wondering). Something is a bit funky about the G2 and (I assume) something to do with it's boot. Starting with CM 6.1, a2sd(ext) support was supposed to be built into the boot.img - maybe that's not the case for the G2, then again, doesn't Cyanogen use this phone? Wtf. Anyway, we may need to take apart the bot.img and edit one of the init files, repack the boot.img, and replace it in our roms then flash (also works with replacing the boot.img in a nandroid). Who's good at that? I've never gone that in depth.

[Semi-DEV] MTD Partitions on DHD-Too large cache

Hey guys(mostly devs, would post in dev section but you know,it's not "right").
I was monitoring something that had gone haywire on my phone with OS Monitor and I found something rather odd.
The /cache partition on the Desire HD is roughly 300Mb,while ONLY almost 19Mb were used.Summing it up,it's more than 250mb of space going to waste. So I thought, especially when coming from a Desire(512mb nand anyone? ) and with all Sense 3 roms coming up,/cache could get smaller with some of the "wasted" space going to a slightly larger /system partition and mostly to a larger /data partition, which might be big enough for most, but for those of us that just forget their devices have certain limits,it would be cool. And in many cases A2SD won't be needed.
So?What do you say guys?If many of us gather we could attract developers' attention.Or at least I hope so!
Regards
Apostolis

It should be, it was done on the desire without even touching the bootloader, all it took was a script to modify cwm and the boot.img

Yep,that's what I was thinking, but the level of security on the DHD is far worse(Worse for us that is! ) than it is on the Desire.I wouldn't know, development isn't my speciality,so Mike will know better. If only you could clarify a little Mike...
Or we could contact Firerat.Isn't he the guy that started the whole MTD partition thing?
Wanna push that thing up!
Now on CM12+ i think its more interesting and four years later maybe someone knows a bit more?
Is there something new?

How possible would it be to use Firerat's MTD partition tool?

I found this thread in the cdma hero android dev forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754805
Also, this one in the Evo 4G dev forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855424
Which ultimately leads to this thread, which was the base for both of the threads above:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=717874
And it got me thinking: who wouldn't want more app "/data" space? While we have the "Move to SD" option for a lot of apps, it would be nice to just have more space for our apps to begin with.
I would love to do this. Especially since I have over 300 megs of unused system space that could be re partitioned to data. Unfortunately, all those devices use mtd partitions, while our phones use emmc. So if it could work, it would require a huge rewrite of the code involved. And I'm not one hundred percent sure it could work even with re writing

from what ive toyed around with and looked at...its going to be a heck of alot of work because your dealing with emmc partitions, and messing with emmc partition sizes are a pain in the face to do correctly without an some sort of a magical anti-brick spell or case...

We may get some life breathed into this just yet. With the devs hot on the trail of rooting the Evo 3D, we *should* be able to piggy back off their work, since the Evo 3D uses the emmc partitions, as well.

Its a set of scripts that change the mount points so that your data partition gets mounted to a ext2/3/4 partion on the sdcard instead of internal storage.

" Low Disk Space " Solution

I know we've all come across this at least once. Whether it's your Device or, your Girls. That Damm Pop Up saying " Low Disk Space " . I now have a solution for it that isn't as drastic as Re-Flashing the Entire Rom. Believe me I was surprised it would be this simple. Coincidentally it also resolved the other Pop of of " Insufficient Memory " . I would re-post it here again, but I didn't want to double post the same thing. So I'll Link you to my original Post.

Thanks for this, good idea for my wife's LG Optimus - her dialer storage is always eating up the most free space and there's only like 160mb to play with total. And she's tied to the thing all the time so getting it away from her long enough to flash a new rom and set up a2sd-ext is tough - this will be a lot quicker.

Keep me posted on how it goes. I've had a few people try it on other Devices already with no issues .
I moved my dialer storage and it did next to nothing. Then i moved data for a couple games and it made a HUGE difference.
So ... be wise about what apps you move data for I guess, but I can confirm it works well with song pop lol

It really just depends on how much data is there. Your dialer storage could have been so small it made no difference. I haven't had to worry about low storage on my doubleshot because we got almost 1GB for apps and I usually install about 200MB of apps and that's it. Some of the main memory hogs are games that need 300mb or more of additional data like gun bros ect. Angry birds also takes a chunk of space.

Very true. But for most users Dialer Storage is Big. I still play the Hell out of Angry Birds. Sometimes the App Cahce gets as high as 50MB, and Data well lets not get into that. Since it's on the SD Card I don't much worry about it. But I always tell people to keep in mind that the SD Card Class has a lot to do with how the Apps perform form the SD Card.

Kool thanks for the input . Yes moving App Data to the SD Card will free up a good amount of space. Just be sure your running at least a Class 4 or better SD Card.

Yeah i got a 16 gig class 4 with a 1 gig ext partition. I'm not heavy with my volume of apps though. Outta curiosity i wonder how much would be freed if I move my angry birds too ... lol
Depends on how much App Data you have. I always look at how much is there before I make a decision to move it. Also gives me a good judge of what I gained. Just be aware that some Games slow down if you move App Data to the SD Card. But it also depends on the SD Card, and your SD Card read ahead. But you can always move it back.
Yeah I have no real need to move anything now. Was just curious to see. I'll look at it later when I get bored ... it'll gimme something to do.
I was having an issue with my phone running choppy occasionally and I started getting random reboots every once in a blue moon. Turned out to be my memory settings and nothing with my data storage. So I'm back to being completely satisfied with everything again.
I'm wondering how others have their read ahead speed set. I have mine at 2048kb because thats what I read was optimal. But when I experimented with v6 supercharger, it said I should set that to 1024kb instead. I also have a 16gb class 2 microsd with a 1gb partition. I'm no longer using v6. Just wondering.
