[Q] Questions about rooting the MT4G and CM7, please help - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay, so I'm definitely new at this. I've had my MT4G for about 6 months, but the stock UI is already getting sluggish and buggy, and I've had enough.
The extent of my experience with all of this is using Visionary for TempRoot and backing up my protected apps to my SDcard using the console. Now, I've read a lot of articles, forums, watched some stuff on youtube, and I feel like it's about time for me to PermRoot and get CM7 on my MT4G.
SOME QUESTIONS (Answering any or all would be very much appreciated):
1. Does the dialer in CM7 work the same way it does in the Stock UI? I'm referring to how you can input several digits or letters of a contact's phone#/name and it will search your contacts, making the most relevant matches appear in a bar above the dialer. I love that feature, wondering if it is in CM7.
2. If I decide I want to go back to the Stock MT4G UI, no root, nothing out of the ordinary AT ALL, S=on, is that possible once I've got PermRoot, S=off, and CM7 installed?
1a. If so, can you please link me to the most stable way to do so?
3. What is currently the most stable way to PermRoot the MT4G, and could you please link me to site/forum?
4. Is there anything I can do before beginning this process to protect my device against bricking or give myself even a faint chance of salvaging the device post-brick?
5. [DUMB QUESTION] I'm pretty positive it does, but does CM7 have functional Swype?

Cyanogen(mod) is a barebones AOSP variant of Android. To answer your questions. No it will not have Swype included. But you can download it via beta.swype.com. No it will not have the widgets that MySense has on the MyTouch. However LauncherPro, paid version, will add some of those widgets back. You can go back to MySense. Just make sure to do a backup of your ROM prior to flashing Cyanogen(mod), or you can flash the PD15IMG via the HBoot screen... Yes you can use a "search feature" in the contacts list. Once you flash it you'll hit the search button to activate a universal search and you can do that way.
And when it comes to rooting your phone. During the root process or after it is rooted the easiest thing you can do to prevent a true brick from happening is READ READ READ READ and understand what you are doing. And keep in mind That if you can access your HBoot Screen and or your Recovery image you are not truly bricked. As far as the simplest way to root ones phone use this link http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/10/how-to-temporarily-root-the-t-mobile-mytouch-4g-htc-glacier/ and make sure to follow the link at the bottom.

About the dialer...
Though the stock Android dialer doesn't have smart dialing, you can get an app for that I use DialerOne which is similar to the HTC Sense dialer. It's available for free in the market.

Nothing tied to SenseUI is in CM7. This includes the T9 dialing, the sense widgets, and some other features. Most if not all of these features can be found in free apps in the market.

Yes, you can download a completely stock image and flash it. You may have to turn s-on afterward. Check the stickies in the Development section.

Use the gfree method (again, check the stickies in the Development section). It will give you s-off, simunlock, and carrierID unlock, or you can selectively apply what you want. You will still need visionary for temprooting and permrooting.

Not really anything before rooting. Perhaps you could flash firmwares using fastboot, but you'd need to flash the engineering bootloader, for which you'd need to be rooted. Also, I think the very definition of bricked is that it is unsalvageable. The good news is the gfree method is pretty fail-safe; I've done it on 2 devices without a hitch. One note: If you decide to flash the engineering bootloader, make sure you type that terminal command correctly or you WILL brick the phone. Just make sure to check it twice before hitting enter.

I used google voice on this, i copy and pasted into a text message. texted it to myself, then copied and pasted it in the terminal emulator... .. just an idea. and i'm sure you could do the same via any two way syncing memo service or email.

Without quoting the whole thread, THANK YOU to everyone who got back to me so fast, you've been really helpful. I've been reading the development section and some other things, and I'm going to look at the link from theunlockr and at the gfree method in the boards. Probably do the root tonight. Thanks again.

Even though the "copy and paste" thing worked for me i would HIGHLY suggest double checking the coding, as it can/will brick your phone if done incorrectly.

[Q] Awaiting first Android phone, DHD, a little baffled!

First off, Hi! Decided to remove myself from Apple's clutches and become a Droid user and the device that swayed me, the Desire HD (just waiting for the stock now from Orange!). Admittedly, Apple have relaxed App approval but I would not use the iPhone without the Jailbreak community and Developers, opens up the device a little for tinkering but the whole Unlock, preserve baseband, Apple update, Jailbreak tools release game has taken it's toll but if honest, it's the personalization for MY DEVICE which is moving me to Android as well as the fiddle ability. Not a fault of the DEV's who work tirelessly and need much applause, time to change and can always return!
So onto some questions, I'm coming on late so please forgive these queries, I've read what I can over the last couple of months!
No doubt I'll be playing with the phone in it's standard guise for a while BUT the time will come when I want to progress further and start ROMing. I'm aware of Visionary by the way, what it can do but the actual facts and what I'll see once complete is where I get lost
Can I restore the phone to factory if temp or perm rooted?
After a month of stock usage (photo's SMS email contacts, usual stuff), how would I get this stuff back if, after rooting (temp or perm) I want to go back to factory or remain rooted i.e different custom ROM?
If I root, do I have to setup everything again? Hard resetting the DHD if using temp root returns the factory ROM? If prem root is applied, how do you return to factory? Where is the factory ROM stored?
I'm not having a go but most of the guides explain the process, think I'm just missing the 'what it actually does?' in Android for Dummies speak. Long as I can backup, restore (yes, I'm used to iTunes taking care of this), apply custom ROM with Sense (requires perm root?), go back if needs be, I'll be a little happier.
No abuse please, I've been Jailbreaking iPhones since their inception so totally up to speed...this is all new and it's the same olde, once fiddled I'll probably laugh at asking! I have bookmarks spread across multiple sites for the DHD, great community and can't wait to get started!!
Cheers

There is an option to unroot in visionary so you dont lose anything..
Rooting alone will not let you flash custom roms or kernels..
You will need
Perm Root
S 0ff
Android sdk - adb/ fastboot
Clockwork Recovery
Now you can easily flash roms and kernels..
The difference from stock is laughable...really...Im using leedroids mod and an overclocked kernel of 1.5ghz..
Quadrant scores of 3000
Linpack 52.149
Neocore 58.7
Crazy scores...my DHD is flying !

Surely these figures mean nothing without stock to compare with?

Anyhow back to question, I would personally recommend installing Titanium backup (requires root) with this you can backup all your apps and data which could be re-installed after hard reset, with certain proviso's
Restoring data may cause problems (especially if swapping to radically different roms)
Certain apps may be firmware specific i.e only work with 2.2.1 not 2.2.x
Whilst using stock firmware avoid any new OTA upgrades, as similar to iOS upgrades they may close off exploits used for obtaining root, also you cannot currently easily downgrade the OS or hBoot so you cannot restore the original OS if you have upgraded from it.
Personally I use ADW launcher, instead of stock (or SENSE) which allows you to backup your desktop configuration and Prefernces, Titanium backup to restore apps and data and sms backup to restore my SMS's, so after flashing a new ROM I restore the apps with data via Titanium then restore the settings with ADW which give me the look back and then restore the SMS's and I'm good to go!
TBH if you can find your way around jailbraking and unlocking an iphone (which from my experience with the Wifes Iphone can be very convoluted) flashing android ROM's is a piece of cake once the original root has been achieved, especially as you don't need to re-root (=Jailbreak) after each OS upgrade provided you stick with custom ROM's

I didnt put stock because all you need to do is look at the quadrant thread...and I cant remember my stock ones ...i think 2300 give or take.
If you install a custom rom you wont be able to install OTA updates anyway..
The Devs always puts updates in their custom roms so its not a problem.
Titanium is good for backups if you do a format using recovery unless you flash over the stock rom then you will keep them.
Flashing a rom is a piece of cake...its what you need to do to be able to flash a rom thats the hard part unless you know what your doing.

Yes, Visionary has an unroot option, which should put you back to square one, and provided you first produce a nandroid backup, essentially a snapshot of the system as is, when recovery is installed you can always put your ROM back to standard as well

As long as youve read up, no sensible question will be scorned, well not by most of us anyway, we (with notable exceptions who where born to greatness) where all noobs once, so get on an enjoy the freedom that android brings should be a breathe of fresh air after apple

uber n00b needs advice.

hello, i'm new here, new to androids as well, actually new to phone hacks in general. Ive jailbroken and unlocked iphones before (my wife has a 3gs 4.2.1 unlocked using with tmobile). but i have no XP with android,.... i'm thinking, rooting is like jailbreaking? i dunno really.. halp! please just give me the basics. like once I ummm, jailbreak my MT4G (hehe got the abbreviation from these forums) how can I modify it with like free apps and such, and the cool themes i see everybody showing off. please halp, please
rooting doesnt give free apps (or at least it didnt when i had a g1) your able to flash a new rom to your phone when you gain root, you can take off some bloatware that comes with certain phones, tweak settings and make stuff more customizable
it is like jailbreaking but i dont think android is against rooting like apple is against jailbreaking
thanks for the reply, so once I root it, can I apply some of the themes and apps mentioned on these forums? I saw a thread regarding apps for rooted devices. Is there a different "app store" once I root my device?
im just getting back to android after having the hd2 for 4 months and a lot may have changed
but when i rooted the g1 there was apps that were labeled as only use if you have root access, so yes there are (were) certain apps that could only be used if you have root but it was the same app store, i remember the cyanogenmod app and it would update the theme with the click of a button
and yeah after root you could do the roms that are in those threads

Only 1 market for apps. Some apps are for rooted devices, some (most) are not. The main difference between a rooted device is that you will be able too have full access of you're phone and flash roms. But if you have no clue what you're doing you can cause some serious damage to your phone (brick).

yup just be very careful when flashing new roms and themes. dont flash anything until you make a nandroid backup too. i have a very simple saying when doin anything to your own phone: "if it feels wrong, it is wrong" and if you have any questions when doing something always ask for help. because most likely someone on here has already made a mistake that you might be doin and save you alot of headaches lol once you gain root access, everything is cake
Please post questions in Q&A section.

Just to clarify, rooting your phone alone does not give you the capability to make Nandroid backups and/or flash ROMs. Rooting gives you root access to otherwise locked down system folders. Making backups and flashing ROMs require the presence of a custom recovery image (like Clockwork recovery).
To the OP; READ, READ, READ! Read as much as you can (and search) before attempting to root your phone. There's a lot of info in these forums that will get you through but you HAVE TO READ and have good confidence in what you're doing. Once you're ready, root, then flash Clockwork recovery, then install Titanium Backup. Use Titanium to make backups of your apps (including system apps). Use Clockwork to make a (Nandroid) backup of the phone's internal drive chip. Once that's done you can move on to flashing ROMs with the ability to get things back to normal if something doesn't work right. Good luck!
Great advice folks, thanks so much. I am permarooted with s=off! w00t, already made a nandroid backup using clockwork... so time to have some fun! Please help with the following questions:
1.) Are there any directories of all ROMs available for our phone?
2.) Will all droid ROMs work? or are they phone specific?
3.) Do I need to keep USB Debugging on?
4.) Do I need to keep the files on my SD card after I've already installed them? (ie: root folder [the one from the rooting guided], and application .apk files)
Thanks! great forum

do I need s=off for cyanogenmod 7?

I have ROM manager premium, and I just downloaded CM7 through it, and was about to flash it, but remembered I dont have s=off.
Also, I cannot get past this screen no matter what. htt p://img145.imageshack.us/i/20110222142411.jpg/

Thanks for answering, but I am rooted, I used the visionary perm-root method. I have terminal emulator and typed "su" and it prompted for super user access. I also have a few apps that use root, which work.
Root access alone is not enough. You need S-Off as well.

for short terms "s" Means security protocol. If your S=ON that means the phone will do a search each time you boot the phone on to see if anything as been tampered with. and if it has it will revert back to a factory status. Just like you first bought the phone. Which includes rooting, recovery images, boot images, engineering screens. What ever you do to your phone that isn't factory will be undone.
It is impossible to do. Because you need to flash the ROM from the recovery image. And since one you boot your phone it will replace Clockwork ROM manager with the factory style recovery image, you cannot not even get to the place you need to flash it from.

Correct because you flashing the Clockwork Recovery image will not STICK unless you have s=off.
They system will replace the aftermarket image with the original EVERYTIME you turn off the phone.
That is the Stock Recovery. You need S-Off and ClockworkMod Recovery. And the right release of CWM Recovery, also. Use CWM Recovery 2.x to back up, restore, and install Android 2.2 (Froyo) based ROMs, including stock, and CWM Recovery 3.x to back up, restore, and install Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) based ROMs, such as CM7.
There is a special version of CWM Recovery that can manage both Froyo and Gingerbread ROMs: 3.0.0.6. Search for it in the Development subforum.
Thanks for all the information, I am slowly learning, and trying to understand all of this.
I am currently trying to get s=off. I found this link via google : ht tp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
I am already "rooted" I believe, because I have superuser access. Should I unroot first?
Also, in order to back up my current(stock) rom, do I need to use clockwork recovery 2.x?

Okay, is there a simpler way to get s=off? That looks a little complex for my first time doing this, and it seems as if one typo will brick my phone.

you can use the link i posted ^^^ there.
I will state this though. That link that you posted is the simplest way of truly rooting your phone. If that seem complex i would advice against you doing it at this point in time.
Rooting your phone basically turns your phone into a computer that can make and receive phone calls. And doing the wrong thing at the wrong time will seriously FUBAR your phone.
If you take a look in the Q&A section and the General Section you will see TONS of post with people in your shoes that didn't know what they were getting into and didn't take the warning laid out there.
READ READ READ about the android ADB before you decide to root your phone. And learn what everything is and what it does.
not trying to sound like a "Richard" but i don't want to see you mess up your phone either.

I have seen many people with problems and they think they bricked their phone. I dont want to be one of them, and I've had a few close calls, and I'll tell you it wasnt fun.
From what I see ADB is just a remote terminal?
I appreciate that, and have taken the warnings very seriously.

That's kind of my point. People don't read.
If you take your time and read and do the entire process you won't have a problem. but you need to read all the way through something prior to jumping in the ring. There is a very strict set a rules that need to be followed.

Help! New Nexus S user

Hi there,
I picked up my Nexus S a couple of days ago and i'm totally loving the device. My only problem is connecting to T-Mobile's 3G network, I can only connect for 4-5 mins before it switches back to Edge, which is terribly slow. I've read that this has been an issue for some people and I tried to remove the sim card, change the APN Settings but nothing seems to help.
I read something about updating to newer radio but I'm not sure how to do that, any help would be appreciated !
All the best,
Gianpy

Go into your settings menu>About Phone and tell us your baseband version please.
I should note that I've not really heard of this happening before and to me it sounds like you're just not in a 3G area.

You might not have 3g in your area. Other than that it sounds weird

You are right now on 2.3.2 Stock without root right?
-So, first step is rooting your phone. You can do it without oem unlock and not losing all your archives. But I did this and I just copied all files again(Yes, it's boring to wait all the time transfering archives but it's better).
- Now you have to flash Clockworkmod (It's the same topic, showing how to do it).
- Then flash through CWM (ClockWorkMod) the update. GRH78 is 2.3.1, GRH78C is 2.3.2, GRI40 is 2.3.3. Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967953
Any douts?
This should solve a lot of issues that you have now.

Well, I just pulled a coverage map of the strip and it seems that there are spots of worse coverage so it all depends on where you are. Nonetheless, I will help you update your radio or even update to 2.3.3 altogether as long as you're willing to root your phone and flash a rom (you can use download and use the update that Google pushes out but a lot of people have problems with it so I think its just easier to root, flash the rom, then just not root again once you have the new ROM). If you want me to help you do this, just say so and tell me if you have a mac or a PC.

You should follow the same steps but the update file is different!

There are a lot of Custom ROMs, you should choose one and flash it.
I put the wrong link, I didn't known that you had a Mac.

The method he linked only works for builds prior to 2.3.3 which is a category you fall into. That guide is quite nice and works very well but it will not unlock your bootloader, which means your SDcard partition for your files and music and pictures etc won't be wiped. If you intend to stay rooted, I don't suggest using that guide but instead using the one I wrote here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970237
Now before you do either, tell me if you want to unlock your bootloader (if you plan to stay rooted after doing the updated) or want to leave it locked (if you plan to remove root after updating).

Whichever is easier to be honest and requires less steps, you tell me haha. I don't mind either option.
Or you could just wait for the official 2.3.3 OTA if you don't want to root. Might get it quicker if you do a checkin request. Simply dial *#*#checkin#*#*

lol the difference between the two is literally two command. if you unlock the bootloader you add one command (fastboot oem unlock) and you use the command "fastboot boot" for the locked method where as you use fastboot flash for the unlocked. After that the two are exactly the same so if you want to stay rooted after updating (so you can use apps like AdFree, Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, etc or want to install custom roms) you should unlock your bootloader.
To be completely frank, if you don't mind unlocking the bootloader I've had some people have trouble with the command "fastboot boot" which is why I changed my guide to use "fastboot flash". What I'm saying is I recommend using my guide, which again you can find at the link below. Remember though, before you go through any of the steps copy the contents of your SD card to your computer. Actually that is a step I should really add lol

No problem man, if you have any questions at all let me know.
Also, here is the link to the full ROM for 2.3.3:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967953
Now I'm not 100% sure if this will update your radio but it will give you the newest update. I'm currently trying to check on that so you can get everything done at once (if it doesn't do the radio there is another file you can install right after installing the ROM that will update your radio. That way you'll be 100% up to date)
EDIT: Yes, it does contain the radio, so that will put you 100% on 2.3.3 with the updated radio.
Do you have any questions?

Rooting Desire Z 2.3.3

/Update: Rooting went fine. Updated this thread - maybe it helps if somebody wants to root his/her 2.3.3 DZ and is being overwhelmed by guides etc.
Hi there!
I finally decided to root my Stock 2.3.3 Desire Z - I've read a lot, but I'm still confused when it comes to certain steps of rooting. I just wanted to get "green light" by someone who certainly has more experience in rooting etc.
First I read this ADB guide to get familiar with it. I certainly didn't understand everything about it, but the basic stuff should be clear.
Next step is downgrading my phone. I want to use this guide as mentioned in the HTC Vision wiki.
Which raises the first question: What's with that post, which Desire Z users should read. I don't really see the connection to the guide I want to use - it's stated that one should replace psneuter with fre3vo in step 4. But which step 4? Little confused.
So which step is different to execute for me?
No step is different, the guide is up to date and can be used with every device stated in its headline.
Next steps should be clear.
So after downgrading I planned on sticking with the Vision wiki - seems that every step is described clearly, even for an ADB dummy.
If everything went well, I planned to flash the Virtuous Sense v2.0.0 which requires a "full wipe".
So it's nonsense to save application settings via titanium backup in the first place, because I want to set Virous 2.0.0 as backup-rom anyway? Are there files I should backup - besides contact info etc.?
Application settings can be restored if you stick to the downgrade guide, only system settings/stuff should not be restored.
And am I missing anything important? Are there other (better) ways of rooting my device?
No
Tiny, rather unimportant last question - is there a way to save my savegames to just load them later if needed? Since the "full wipe" wipes everything (?), I don't see how I could save them.
See above.
Looking forward to be enlightened!
Greetings!

I followed the downgrading guide you linked to in order to downgrade from 2.3.3 and it worked perfectly for me (and many others, it seems). The guide uses fre3vo so I think you are safe to just follow the steps described in it.
I used SMS Backup & Restore and Angry Birds Backup free, both worked a treat. Other than that I restored everything from scratch.
It's probably a good idea to do a nandroid backup after rooting the stock froyo ROM but before flashing something else. Just in case.
Good luck
Yeah, and you probably should have posted this in Q&A
Eventually it would have been better, yup, but then I considered this thread more like a list of steps you want to go through to root your Desire Z 2.3.3 successfully - maybe it helps someone.
Anyway, thanks for your answer. I'll try that SMS Backup app.
Now I have to gather some informations about that "nandroid" backup - I've read it several times, but still I don't know what exactly it does / its benefits are.
If anyone would like to give a brief explanation, feel free!
Greetings
/edit: Well, a nandroid backup can be done with clockwork recovery, which installation is kinda part of the rooting process. There's one thing I don't understand yet - how to load that backup if it's needed?

Part of the rooting process gives you a better recovery partition that you can boot into, where you can flash roms, backup/restore ROMs and has some other tools, this is independent of the ROM you flash and is a safety net when messing with your phone.

So, essentially, as you already mentioned, that means I got safety tools that work independent. For example - if everything goes wrong and I have a copy of that nandroid backup somewhere, I could easily adb push that onto my sd card and flash it? Or has this backup to be on my sd card all the time, because in certain cases the sd-card is not mountable?
Just want to make sure that I understand what I'm doing..

You don't have to have the nandroid backup on your SD card at all times. You can do a backup, copy it to your computer and keep it there if you need the space on your SD card for daily use. There is also the possibility to keep multiple backups of different ROMs if you wish to change UI more often.
Whatever your needs, you should at least keep one backup from a stable setup. If anything goes wrong you can copy it back to your SD card (if it is not already there), boot into recovery (volume down + power) and choose backup/restore and restore your backup. Everything will be exactly as it was when backing up - very convenient
Everything went fine, updated thread - maybe it helps someone.
Thanks again!
Good to hear it went well
Got full root access and all the way to step 5 on the Wiki and go to verify that it worked and I get the...

You can't root 2.3.3 directly. In order to root you need to first downgrade to 2.2 and then root. Afterwards you can choose to install a rooted 2.3.3 stock ROM, a custom ROM with 2.3.5 or 2.3.7 depending on what you choose. Or you can try out one of the ICS alphas.

I have factory 2.3.3 in my desire z , is it possible to root it (downgrade and change to something new ) and not to lose my data and installed applications?
Zocca: You have to downgrade, but the downgrade guide contains a section to get Titanium Backup running, so you can backup your apps and data.
