Cifs module for the atrix? - Atrix 4G General

Is there a cifs.ko for the atrix? I want to get cifs manager working so I can browse the computers on my network.

Depending on what you want to do, the "Media Share" app native to the phone may be all you need. I've used it as a CIFS client to hit my windows and Samba boxen at home to copy files back and forth to both internal storage and the MicroSD card.

Yes, You CAN See the External SD Card!

I've been playing around for a while with how to access the micro SD card and I finally found an app that let's you do it.
It's called "Wireless File Transfer" by Nivue and it's in the Market. Basically you get the entire file systrem of your Iconia tab as shown below
Index of xxftp://10.0.XX:2xxx/mnt/xx
Up to higher level directory
Name Size Last Modified
sdcard 5/23/2011 6:18:00 PM
external_sd 12/31/2010 7:00:00 PM
usb_storage 5/23/2011 1:14:00 AM
secure 5/23/2011 1:14:00 AM
asec 5/23/2011 1:14:00 AM
obb 5/23/2011 1:14:00 AM
It allows you to set up a password-protected ftp server with access to practically everything on the Iconia.
Kudos to the developer - it's free in the market!
nice find...........
The question is, how do you navigate to you network shares via the A500?

I think (at least in Windoze) that you just view the devices on your network and open those that you are interested in. I'm using it more as a means to transfer files TO the Iconia and/or dump stuff from the Iconia to my PC.
I can see the file structure of the tab in Windows Explorer under the network folder

File Manager HD lets you assign names to network shares so you don't have to search for them each time. You would swear the a500 is just another Windows box on the network.
It also works great with external SD and USB Drives. You can create bookmarks to each drive, also.
Free in the market. People like it so much they are begging for a paid version so they can get rid of ads (which are really unobtrusive however)
TRY IT, you'll like it !
I stumbled on a proggy called AndSMB works the same but much easier to setup, for me anyways....

[Q] Mounting NTFS volume over Wifi

Is it possible?
I've found this app. But sadly it only supports NFS/CIFS volumes.
Depends what you're trying to do, creating a ftp server or using dropbox suffice or are you trying to do something more complicated?

I guess I should elaborate a little more,
I'm sharing a folder on my desktop computer and would like to be able to access files on my HTC EVO. The folder is not protected with any sort of permissions and can be accessed by anyone that's on my WiFi network. Ideally I'd like to be able to effortlessly stream multimedia from that folder to my EVO.
Thanks!

I am not aware of any such. But File Manager HD atleast allows you to browse samba shares easily, would that be enough?

Any way to play media such as movies or music from ES? I'm still waiting for VLC to be released for Honeycomb.

The underlying protocol is called SMB. So yes, it is Linux, Windows, OSX and several other OSes.

Understood. So perhaps it could connect then. I'll try it out.
You can connect and copy it over, but I haven't found a way to stream video from my NAS yet.
I would love to turn this into a XBMC-style media hub.

It'd be nice. Honestly we need a VLC app conscious of Windows shares.
Es file manager file manager hlhd works well for me. Also can access direct to my windows web hosting server as mapped drive.but only works within that app.wish it was built into long click menues. But we don't get everything we want
Someone could provided write something for this as if you install say Facebook at it added a share likpnk in long click lenient of other photo and sharing
If you are rooted and install any of the kernel available in the forum then you can use cifs app in the market to map windows shares.

I'm using ES File Explorer (pre and post root) and I'm able to access a networked windows share (Win7) with my video files. When I select a video file, a dialog box appears asking me which player to use. I use Rock Player Lite and after about 15s, my video starts!
Also, this works remotely using VPN (DD-WRT!!!)

You seem to already be rooted according to your sig. So now, backup all your apps and settings with titanium backup, and put the Honeyvillain ROM on your tab. Full wipe. Restore your apps etc. The reason for the ROM is that it already has the Cifs module integrated right into it, making it so you dont have to add it yourself. And it is an awesome Rom that is 3.1 and works great.
Now, go to the market and DL the free app calls Cifs Manager. In it you set your network shares just like in windows. You just have to run the app once (and after any reboot) and it mounts your pre set shares as if they were right on your tab. Then you can use ES File explorer to browse to them. /mnt/cifs/your shares. Clicking aything will allow access as if it was on your device.
I stream videos with no lag or delay this way. It works perfectly. And if you set Moboplayer as your default video player you can play pretty much any file without issues (at least I have so far).
Good luck!
AndSMB seems to work fine

Good point. What else do I gain with a third party ROM on this device?

Android File Transfer GS3

Was wondering about everyone's thoughts about this new feature. Personally I think it's crap. I can't view/read ANY files from the sd cards unless I FIRST transfer them to my mac...GAY! Why can't we just mount the SD cards like the GS2???
Can you please explain because I'm having this issue managing files from the sd

Basically, the mac tells me I have to transfer a file to the mac to view it....which sucks. With phones like the Galaxy S2, I was able to plug in and mount the sd cards and it would act like any other USB mass storage external memory drive.
I'm not quite understanding what you mean by "mac". This issue is KILLING me. I can't even find my sd card unless I use the built I file manager

It's due to the way that Ice Cream Sandwich handles the Memory. It's always live in the system. The only way to access the Memory is through MTP. There is an advantage of using such because it means that if your phone is formatted ext4 (speed increases if I am not mistaken) you can take advantage of that and still access the data. Both Windows and Linux support MTP, unfortunately Apple has not implemented such even though devices are starting to use MTP more these days.
For Further reading go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol
From reading the site, there is a 3rd party implementation, not sure how up to date it is, but you might be able to make it work.
http://www.wentnet.com/projects/xnjb/ check that out to see if you can enable MTP on your mac which would reduce the need for Android File Transfer.
Also it has been a while since I have used Mac but you might be able to use these instructions to install a Ubuntu supported MTP software on your mac through X11 (allows you to run linux software on your mac) http://www.humans-enabled.com/2011/12/how-to-fix-samsung-galaxy-nexus-mtp.html
One final link.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1355913
Thanks very much. I'm looking into it now
Ok.. I am using the Android File Transfer program and I can copy individual files to/from my GS3 BUT I cannot create folders for some reason. Even with the +Folder button. The error message reads: "Could not create folder. Try reconnecting or restarting your device." (Obviously I have done both multiple times.
Any thoughts?
on my PC it shows up as a portable media device and allows me to access both internal and SD memory
i did install the galaxy s3 drivers found on the rooting guides though

I can't get Android File Transfer to work with my Galaxy S3 running CM9 (or CM10, for that matter), either using MTP or using the camera setting. This is really annoying. Anyone know of a way to get it to work? I really wish that USB mounting still worked, so I wouldn't be required to use client software.
It works fine on my mac at work and I have a 5 year old macbook pro. It's not all that bad. I just use it to transfer files when I'm at work.

Well, it doesn't work for mine at all. Any tips? Did you have to anything to get it to work? Which ROM are you using?

All I did was install the app and it popped up a window that displayed sdcard and phone. Each option displays a list of the content on that storage device.

[Q] How to connect note 10.1 to PC as a pendrive?

I use Linux and it doesn't support MTP well, so I'd like to connect Note 10.1 as a pendrive to my PC. And MTP asks silly questions when copying files even on Windows.
But here I've only got MTP and PTP options. I don't know if it's firmware related? I'm using a Chinese firmware.:crying:
Alas, out of the box, Android doesn't support USB Mass Storage protocol, just MTP and PTP. Mac users have a similar problem. Only Windows supports MTP in the OS.
There are apps that can give you this functionality, though. Sorry, don't know which ones since I use Windows and don't have this problem.
Hey there!
I use Linux as my os either and I do transfer "small" amounts of data via sftp. So I make use of the ssh which is running all the time on my computer. Es file Explorer and solid explorer can handle that connection (the 2 i so use, sure there are more apps...) and the ability to save it as a bookmark is pretty nice, too. For larger files I use the faster protocol ftp. I know at least with solid explorer you can simply let your tab act as a server.
I know that's just a work around but as I do only sync stuff for University I can life with it.

If you're rooted, you can use This App to enable UMS.
I tried go-mtpfs and it is working nicely! Thank you for your replies.:fingers-crossed:
If its just for transfers use airdroid.
