Root and unlock, not working - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to root and unlock for MyTouch 4G but it seems like its not working
Even though I temproot the phone and SSH it with SSHDroid.
I can't make execute the command
./gfree -f
Can someone help me?

I was able to root my phone by using something like
putting a file on my sdcard and then running it
sh root.sh and it worked just fine.. but I can't unlock my phone still.. does anyone know any way to unlock the mytouch 4g?

It seems like your already perm rooted. But, s off is required for u to flash custom roms.

How did you push the root file? I'm stuck on the same thing!
PostaHTC I see you made alot of posts I am guessing you just did TempROOT and you didn't invokes the sh command. Did you download the root.sh? If so after TempROOT to get PermROOT from console type in sh <file> make sure you have root dir under /sdcard
I've done it step by step and still nothing I just got it out the box 2days ago so I just did a hard reset I'm just waiting on someone to tell me what I am doing wrong
Can you tell me exactly what to do because I rooted my 1st myTouch but this one is acting crazy! I have all the files /sdcard my question is when you temp-Root the phone do you type the commands then perm-root? Like I'm lost
Well since you are up to the PermROOT I take it you have TempROOT, if so as you saying you have root.sh in root dir inside /sdcard so it would look like /sdcard/root/root.sh for the absolute path. Also you have console right? If not go download Terminal Emulator. Then type in "su" and press enter SU=Super User or @wheel,root permission base. Then use "cd /sdcard/root" press enter CD = Change Directory. Then do "sh root.sh" and press enter as sh is shall execute command. So it would look like this below:
su
cd /sdcard/root
sh root.sh
Now just do restart and make sure you have S=OFF as you will see it on top in HBoot screen. When you are back on go open Visionary+ and unclick TempROOT on boot and click TempROOT now. Then look below and click on Attempt PermROOT Now.

I have everything I need the files and all...I have the files on the SD Card not the root folder When I turn it off it is still saying S-On
Well in that case from console type in
su
mkdir /sdcard/root
mv /sdcard/root.sh /sdcard/root/
cd /sdcard/root
sh root.sh
If you don't want to do it manually then you can do it easily via FileExp go use Astro or Root Explorer. From what you are saying I have my money on you didn't properly do TempROOT. I say go do TempROOT again then try what I suggested for PermROOT.
UPDATE: Here I found you Youtube videos how to do step by step.

PermROOT> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sy_aqKoeev4
Use the howto from Theunlockr video posted above it maybe easier for you to follow.

can't unlock! HELP!

i'm trying to use gfree to unlock my mytouch 4g, but its always giving me a permission denied
I think my device is fully rooted, because I don't have to temproot it every time I restart, and my S=off
Anyways, my gfree while is located on my sdcard
so basically I go to
cd /sdcard
chmod 777 gfree
./gfree -f
Then it gives me a permission denied error.
Does anyone know how to fix this? I tried putting the file in /data/local/ but it doesn't allow me
If your s=off then you are permanently rooted. And you need to make sure you are using a root explorer like Super Manager.

Well, what am I going to do with super manager?
I have filemanager, but I still gonna execute ./gfree -f in my terminal.
It gives me a "permission denied" error
Okay now, i'm able to access everything, but I cannot execute the ./gfree -f
It doesn't give me an error or anything.

what happens if you type "su" enter in terminal? if you get denied error, go to super user make sure terminal isn't set to get denied. that is tab it, forget, go back to terminal, type su, select allow in the popup window. you might have to reboot after forget in super user.
start the process over, but use gfree 2 instead of the gfree 4 they suggest. I had this exact same issue and that's what was suggested to me and it worked.

If you are using a non "SU" access File Manager it might not being placing the file correctly. Thus giving you an error. Since the system might still be in a r/o fashion it cannot execute the commands properly.

[Q] GUI windows 32 root versus adb perm root opinions

I want to root my evo shift and would like some opinions on which root method everyone likes. What is the easiest way to get root for wireless tether that is really the main reason for me rooting.
I'm looking at using the windows 32 GUI method because there is no command line. For some reason even with a guide command line makes me nervous.
Thanks in advance.
With the commands all you have to do is copy from xda.com and paste into your cmd prompt on your pc, a few guys including myself have done the perm root instructions on terminal emulater on the phone its self

When i rooted there was only the manual way.....
Brand new to android at the time but if u follow the instructions i'm sure you'll be fine.....

Help Looked at wiki and stickies: Unrooting without Windows or USB?

The USB port on my ph is broken so I need to send it back. In addition, I don't know ANYONE with a windows machine. So far I've restored stock ROM and factory settings with P10IMG.zip, but I still have S-OFF. I think I rooted with Gfree. When I look at the wiki, it looks impossible without a windows machine and working USB port. What are my options? is there a slightly older stock rom that will auto unroot my ph and allow me to upgrade to 2.2. I'm afraid if I try to flash gingerbread in order to gain S-on, they'll take one look and charge me 500 bucks.
generally speaking as long as the problem isnt root related (ie broken usb) they wont charge you.. i didnt do gfree so i cant say exactly how to s-on
Thanks, I'm still trying to get it S-on.... I hope you're right about them not caring but since I'm returning it under warranty and not under insurance... I'm nervous. Me and Murphy's Law don't get along so well.

If you have access to a microsd to sd card adaptor, a different phone with a working usb port, or if you have root explorer (which you should have) you can do everything in that guide to return to stock.
A pc and adb is not required for this guide. Its just convient.

I've read the portion I would need to do "Alternative: Use gfree to get radio S-ON and the original CID" a gazillion times and honestly, it's like reading greek. I have no idea how I could do that process using my good ph and a sd card. Can you elaborate... with stupid simple instructions
I'm still unable to figure this out. The wiki instructions are:
ON YOUR PC:
Unzip gfree_06.zip to a place on your computer. Open a terminal or command window, navigate to where the files are on your computer, and type:
$ adb push gfree /data/local/tmp/gfree
$ adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/gfree
gfree should now be in your phone at /data/local/tmp
IN THE ROOT SHELL (in the first terminal/command) : Now run:
# /data/local/tmp/gfree -s on -c T-MOB010
# sync
I put Gfree on the root menu of the sdcard since I can't figure out how to put it /data/local/tmp/gfree without a USB or ADB. Changed the command to
/sdcard/gfree -s on -c T-MOB010
and, I get permission denied *sighs* I don't know what to do.
I have the temp root using visionary instead of psneuter because the wiki said, I needed to Temp root prior to unrooting and the psneuter instructions were for adb. Every seemed okay but I guess not. Any idea where to go from here?

Why eng-hboot? and gfree -S question.

I bought a used Desire Z from a friend on a different carrier and I need to at least SIM unlock it so I can use it on my carrier.
I realize I can go thorough the entire gfree (per the WIKI) process and perma root/unlock, etc. I also saw the option to gfree -S to SIM unlock only.
First, when you fully root etc in order to install custom ROMs, what is the purpose of eng-hboot? Per the WIKI, while recommended, you don't have to install it. Since it appears to be optional, why would you install it? Given that minimizing changes are usually a good thing, there must be some benefit to installing it given the risks. I looked but could not find anything regarding this.
Under the assumption that minimizing changes is a good thing, if I decide to only SIM unlock via gfree -S, what do I need to modify in the WIKI process?
It looks like I would still need to tmp root using psneuter so I still need to copy it and gfree to the phone. It looks like I would not need anything else except maybe clockwork (which I don't think I need if not installing custom ROMs).
Then I would tmp root, run gfree-S. Here is where I am not sure if I run just gfree -S or gfree -S -y recovery.img (the later implying that I would need clockwork). I think the answer is just gfree -S (which would go hand in hand with not needing clockwork) but I am not sure.
Obviously since I would be SIM unlocking only I would not install hboot-eng.
After that I don't think I need to run root_psn since I would not be perma rooting (I think that is what it does). Do I need to sync then or not (I suspect yes I need to sync).
Now, assuming I decide to SIM unlock only and I run gfree -S process correctly, what if some time later I decide to fully root/unlock? Can I run the full process (gfree -f + clockwork etc) or will the fact that -f will try to SIM unlock an already SIM unlocked phone cause a failure in gfree or the process?
Now I realize some may think what the heck, if your going to mess with it at all, you might as well do the whole thing and just follow the WIKI. To some extent I agree. On the other hand I do like to understand my options and have some idea of why I am doing what I am doing rather then simply following some script.
Thanks
The eng hboot gives you more control over your phone.
If you do anything to 'soft-brick' your device, but can still get to eng hboot, it will be recoverable.
If you only want Sim Unlock and don't care for the rest, then just run psneuter and
./gfree -S
this should only change the simlock.
If you later decide to full root, you can still use gfree -f option, it wn't mess up Sim Unlock.
-Nipqer
Thank you very much.
