None of us are mind readers. What did you try, and where did you fail? There are several different rooting procedures that can be used -- but all require careful attention to each step in the process.
(Some people who have difficulty with written instructions have had great help from video instructions, and vice versa. Perhaps you might look into "alternative media" if what has you have read or watched just confused you.)
Ive been following mostly videos of it to the T, and still not couldnt get it to s off. I can temp root it with my eyes close but its no s off for me to perm root it

Visionary is only a temp rooting tool. It will not permaroot your phone nor will it turn s=off. It is only used to gain SU access so you can permaroot the device.
If that is all you are doing that is why you cannot turn s=off.
I've seen people have trouble using the Cyanogen method that is posted in the link above this.
Use the link in my signature to get your ADB set up and working so it will pick up your device.
Once you've done that use This Method for complete "rootness" of your phone but you may end up bricking the device you must be very very very careful with what you are doing. Or you can Use this method to root the phone with little chance of bricking it. That will turn s=off but will not install the ./gfree nor SuperCID and will leave the hBoot screen alone but it has the least chance of bricking your device.
thanks for all the feed back but i believe you were absolutely right about me watching videos which i realized is much easier for me. those links are very helpful but i just cant get em down pack to complete them which brings me to a conclusion of a unrooted phone. this sucks for me so bad
The unlockr pages has videos.

This is probably going to get moved to the Q & A forum before I can finish posting this.
I have yet to find an easier root process or an easier set of instructions to follow, than the following post...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225
Please read that in its entirety. This is such an easy process that anyone who gets lost or messes it up, might not want to try it in the first place. I'm being as honest as possible, not trying to be insulting.
Ultimately, S=On is part of the un-root process, soooo, you're back at scratch. This means you would need to start back at the top of that post above and follow the instructions on how to root your phone/get S=Off.
Good luck!

i understand BUT when i run visionary it tells me already rooted.... but when i type in su it says permission denied....
We're going to need some additional details. You on 2.2.1? Have you restarted your phone since and tried again?
I'll spell it out for you - it really is dead-simple...
(***paraphrasing the OFFICIAL instructions in the thread I linked to above***)
- Enable USB Debugging
- Extract the root.rar in the original post - MAKE SURE YOU PAID ATTENTION AND NOTICED THERE IS A ROOT FOLDER WITHIN A ROOT FOLDER - a nested folder. You do NOT WANT THIS. You want just one /root folder on your sdcard, within it at the .sh scripts.
- Install VISIONary
- Attempt Temp Root
- Run Terminal emulator, type su and follow the instructions in the original post to execute the script - reboot.
- When your phone comes back up, run VISIONary again
- Attempt Temp Root
- Attempt Perm Root
There is really no way to mess this up. I have done this on 6 MT4G's, so if it's not working, you didn't follow the instructions - no doubt, no question. You don't need ADB - you can do this all from your phone with a file explorer (I use EStrongs) and a terminal emulator (I use Android Terminal Emulator).
I'm surprised this hasn't been moderated yet...

What do you mean it "tells you already rooted"? I am rooted and just running VISIONary - that is, launching VISIONary - it doesn't tell you anything. If you click Temproot now, is that when it shows that?
You know you have to first do Temproot and then do Permroot, right? From what I've seen, you can't "over root," so honestly, I highly recommend starting over again. If possible, I would literally type out each and every step you're taking. Maybe it will show us where you're messing up.

Good call. I thought about that as soon as I finished my last reply - i.e. check the VISIONary version.
I've been using r14 since my first MT4G and haven't had a single issue on any of the MT4G's I've used it on.

Please post questions in Q&A section.
Hi there everyone,
I want to root my Desire HD, but I don't want to install any custom roms, radios, etc. I only want to root my HD so I can install apps that require root. I see no advantage in installing any custom ROMs, so I want to leave that alone.
What's the best way to go about this? I've found this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834427. Do I need to do anything else, except what is in this guide? I'm terrified of bricking my phone!
Could I brick my device if I made a mistake with the above guide, or S-OFF?
Thanks in advance,
Alex
Sorry for the question (no doubt it's been asked before), I've rooted my old HTC Hero before, found that easy, but this I'm confused!
Hi there. I'm actually quite a noob at all this since rooting is all new to me but seems you and I went after similar threads because I also read that guide to rooting the DHD at first. But after some further reading I discovered this is actually a much more difficult method of rooting (maybe because it's older?).
It will really, really help to look in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846248 as it explains so much and has many useful links.
But in answer to your question read this guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841076 A much easier method of rooting =)
Good luck.

After I've ran that step - do I have permroot and I don't need to do anything else? I only want root, not custom ROM's.
I'm scared of doing the permroot, sounds like I'll break my phone if I even attempt it! Is there any way to ensure it will work?
Yeh you will be perma rooted if you follow the steps. About ensuring it will work, this is something I am now looking into myself. I'm getting the impression that it's possible to create a copy of the stock rom even without the perma root and using that to do a recovery in the event of a root failure. Though I would have thought perma root would have been needed to do a recovery in the first place....
I've got a thread below yours where I'm still trying to get a clear answer as to how to do all that. If I find out I'll let u know =P

By "if you follow the steps" - do you mean I only have to follow step 1 for perm root? Or more than that?
Sorry for all the questions, I really do appreciate your help, thanks!
And also - if it fails, the stock WWE RUU can be flashed to restore the phone, can't it?
EDIT: Followed step one, restarted device and everything - perm root stays. Thanks for all your help mate!

Go all way through these steps from 1.1 to 1.6. Once you've done 1.6 your phone should be rooted. Just download the terminal emulator from the market and do that last thing that is mentioned to test the perma rooting. If that works then your good.
Oh just so you know the temp root option in Visionary is apparently completely safe and won't harm nothing because it makes no changes to the system partition.
Not sure about the WWE RUU. I'm not sure it will be compatible with your current ROM (Only thing I do know is that if it's older then your current it won't work). Don't know how to flash it either tbh, that's something I ain't found out yet =P
I have tried every method and not one of them will turn the S-Off, if anyone has got this one to be permarooted let me know what you did.

Go to the unlockr.com and follow the guid on how to setup adb. Once you have done that, go to briefmobile.com and look at the directions on how to root the mytouch 4g. Once on that webpage you should see something that says "follow these 11 simple steps" or something alont those lines. And follow those directions and you should be all set

Ok, So i've spoke with 2 people from XDA Over the Phone today both tell me to do Sdk However I am not willing to increase the risk of bricking my phone. So please do not suggest sdk,

Su (Works)
cd sdcard/Root (I've done it with both the slash in front as well and witout it so do not try and correct me because it dosen't effect how it runs)
sh root.sh (Runs the kernel)
So I get the exact same thing as what I see on the youtube videos, Then I go back into visionary and run Perm Root and it will reboot my phone and when I go into Termenal and type Su for super user I get access Denied, I have tryed tons of alternatives and I have verifyed that it is 2.2.1, I've tryed Rebooting it and checking to see if S is off and its not, I'm trying to install the ultimate droid rom in it but since I can't get into recovery because of it not being rooted it wont allow me to do anything,. First, I've used VISIONary r14 many times on multiple Glaciers without problem. It should work just fine.
Second, setting up the SDK is not hard. Whoever gave you the idea that the SDK increases the risk of bricking your device is a moron. In fact, the SDK comes with some *very* useful tools that can help you recover if your phone starts running into problems. You don't need it to root your device, but it certainly won't hurt to at least install the tools/platform-tools (you don't need the entire SDK if you don't want it).
Third, I suggest using gfree instead of root.sh because it does much more. I also suggest flashing the engineering bootloader (instructions in same thread) so that you can use fastboot (this is one of those SDK tools I was talking about). Be careful when you enter that command or you could really screw yourself.
You Dont need SDK... Just download the EASY ADB as it works just Fine. Visionary R 14 Will give you a Perm Root, just use it with terminal emulator it is Easy. The Eng. Bootloader is a must have. You can also use the g free method either one is fine. Always remember that you can Always go back to stock if needed with the PD15IMG.zip.
i've tried the both the visionary and the gfree way and i think theres something up with the root.sh files or something happened to the roms themselves to not work properly though the gfree version worked 100%. and honestly if your not comfortable with ADB pushing then your going to miss out on alot of stuff for MT4G especially if you want to be cutting edge MT4g.

I logged in just so I could comment on this..it annoyed me that much. Being as I use to have an EVO and Sprint, the myTouch was EASIER to root then the EVO and is over all a much more capable phone once rooted. I used gfree and it was CAKE to root my phone...it is now fully carrier unlocked and basically brick proof due to the EBL 85.2007. I've been on the EVO forums (my roommate has one still and I'm his flasher) and there is a crap load of outdated ROMS and mods that if you aren't careful what you are mixing and matching you will end up with a bootlooped phone. Not the case with the myTouch everything here is kept well up to date and accurate. Not sure why you felt the need to post this but it was unneeded and well off topic.
