Firerats and Data2ext - Hero CDMA General

I know I should not be starting a new thread, but I think this is relevant. Many of us here are using some sort of popular method of increasing our data storage, be it either firerats or data2ext. I will submit that they are both very useful, and I personally use data2ext v2, and it works excellent for me with a nominal setup problem. I have also done firerats, which I believe is good for some folks, but just not worth the effort and tweaking for me. Data2ext is easier for me to set up and maintain between ROMS, never had market issues, and my space that I set is constant (I currently work with a half gig, gives me plenty of app room). I would be interested in any discussions which validate firerats as the better choice given a specific situation. The bottom line is I know we all have our preferences, but make an argument why one is better than the other. The newer guys want to ask, but are afraid to. State your case.

FTW.....this thread makes sense because i cant make sense of which one to use. firstly because all attempts have ended in bootloops, secondly whenever i did think i got it going and checked stats nothing changed (obviously my fault) but after several dozen attempts you start to lose faith and don't want to ask questions because you get dragged across the coals for asking hows and why's. I use Amon Ra 1.6 / Asop mod 3/7, S-Off unrevoked method, "ondemand gov / min 267-max 710, JIT enabled, Comp Cache 18%, VM is at 32, CWM 3, Titanium B is my best friend, Radio is 2.42.02.10.29, Class 6 16 GB SD Card, partitioned thru Amon recovery "0" swap/ 1024 on ext4. fix permissions thru CWM after every new ROM update and reboot, every new update i wipe dalvik cache 3 times, only flash Gapps if its updated, i reboot (pull battery/ bootloader reset device/ reboot thru recovery at least 4-6 times before getting nervous, nandroid back up, nandroid back up, nandroid back up, I have SDK etup on my MAC, ADB only works using "./fastboot" commands which are limited on information on the internet, signed many consent forms stating that i hold no-one responsible for my learning curve and that any modifications to my phone might potentially set my phone on fire and unleash lucifer on orphaned blind babies ....obviously i have kept up and read alot of the forum extensively but yes the new guys would like a hand once in a while, the language is difficult and the native are at times are restless., yes i like learning something new and yes i like being taught, yes i want to breathe life into it, yes i want to see incredible benchmarks that make my phone proud, yes i want to see ridiculous battery life to brag, yes iwant to do all i can to see my old dog do new tricks, Yes I love my hero..... <whew> apologies for the rant but had to let it out... i will be reading this post quite a bit if questions can be answered with patience. ;-p

@cortacana
Well I don't think your recovery supports ext4 with 1.6 RA. If you want to use data2ext. Try ext2 and RA1.7 and down grade your ext to ext2. And if your going to use firerats you don't need your sd/card partitioned. If you want to use data2ext ext 4 your ext is correct but I think you need the newer cwm recovery that supports ext4 I think or RA1.7 Well hope this helps. Good luck.

This is about the best resource there is: http://romrepo.info/wiki/index.php?title=Enable_data2ext

FWIW...
I tried data2ext set at 512M with aospCMod and CM7 RC2. The phone reported it had 473M. It worked fine for a day or two, then I started getting all kinds of FC, especially with Google Maps, and several apps just started failing to open.
So I switched over to Firerat's with CM7 RC2 and haven't looked back. I've got 340M for apps, but it seems much more stable.
It could very well be that my sd card simply won't support having my /app partition on it (although it did fine with the app2sd function that came with CM6).
Cheers

I had the same problem and have been meaning to do firerats. How simple is it to set up?

The instructions state the recommended partition is 1024 and you tried 512 could be your reason for fc's. And did you try ext2 or ext4?? I've been using ext2 with and I have my partitions at
1024 ext2 swap 0 and the rest fat. That gives me 0.94gb of internal mem and I've had not one problem. But a all phone are different.

Thanks for your help, I just went through with the backups, changed recoveries, and did a full wipe before I updated. Unfortunately I ran into some problems with gapps, and had to do it all over again. Anyway, as of now data2ext2 is working. Hopefully this will work better than the ext4.

Never heard of the boost what do I need to do? And for what it's worth I didn't see an increase in quadrant scores. Class 4 card. Not that I care, since quadrant scores mean nothing but is that normal?

Being a newb SUCKS!

Ok so.. I finally after months flashed my second rom
HAd some trouble, I have to admit..
DC~~
I had trouble and I did some wiping and messing with my SD chip and that was the only way I could functionally get a flash..
I just spent a day and a half setting my phone up to my liking and its become apparent apps2sd isn't working and my SD card only has one 1.5 partition out of 2 gb.
Sorry if there are posts with directions of how to work from this point to keep everything while enabling apps2sd and transfering
I dont know where to start searching.
Thanks guys.

get a app called dconfig, it has an option to move your apps so they're on the card.
other than that im not sure what youre asking.
it might be simpler just to flash your phone, format your card and start from scratch.

do some searching on here, goggle & ppcgeeks for how to root, flash a recovery image, partition your sd card and flash a rom. just make sure the guide you are using and the rom you use is for a cdma based hero.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=90380 heres good guide to get you started.
I'm rooted I might just need to flash the Rom with the SD card.formatted correctly... I'm going to try to re find where the apps are stored and save them... id love to just be able to correct my SD config and set up apps2sd and move em over so I can keep my home screen set up as well as the info supplied in my apps and todo lists..
Thanks for the info ... on the road right now (passenger.seat )
Maybe I'm not a newb, I'm just stupid... I rooted using ubuntu karmic and I had apps2sd working before I moved to damage control
Sent from my HERO200 using Tapatalk
hmm.. Damage control rom comes with Dconfig and it has apps2sd enabled and move apps to sd checked.
Ok heres the thing..
I had a Modaco rom before and with apps2sd enabled and the SD formatted properly.
Plugging my phone into a computer would open up 2 drives... One 1 designated to be 1.5 gb and another .5 gb
How ever now I only see one.. the 1.5 gb
My memory is running low as if everything i've installed is in the phone.
searching through the phone i can't seem to find where these apps are being saved...
Are they on the elusive .5 gb partition I can't seem to see??
i think not... I just rebooted and my available space is 63.74mb
It's all becoming a no brainer that i should reflash the rom with the correct specifications to the SD chip...
But what I want to know, is there a way around this. ( I don't see any options, but I'd love to reformat my SD correctly and get apps2sd working on my own, moving all my apps over there while keeping any stored data intact...) <--- is this possible??
[maybe i should learn how to communicate clearly LOL]
For the moment, Ill back up my SD contents and hunt down how to partition correctly.. then I'll see if I can't find the folders where it is storing downloaded apps... then I'll disable then enable the apps2sd setting in dconfig and download an app... if all goes well i'll start pushing my apps over and do the whol "fix apk uid" in the recovery menu...
Hell maybe ill even decide to get a newer recovery besides 1.2.3 while im at it hahah.. any suggestions would be appreciated

There's only one way to stop being a n00b: Learn.
You're doing fine. My suggestion is to not take it all on at once. Focus on one problem, fix it, learn from it and move on to the next one. You'll be a pro in no time.
I would guess that you need to repartition the SD card when moving from one ROM to the next, but I've never really played with apps2sd. See? You know more about it than I do!
download app: quick systems info
to see if your a2sd is working and how much is being used.
use the dconfig to make sure you have dalvik cached moved to sd... reboot the phone.
i am guessing at this....
you say you had a2sd working before with Madaco and could see 2 drives... that sounds wrong to me. if a2sd was working, then you should not see the 2nd drive. you are only able to see the main larger drive and that is it.. the others are used by android and not available to us.
now that you can not see the 2nd drive. sounds like a2sd is working. the app i suggested should confirm for you.
I did get everything working and my memory remains the same when I install applications.... perhaps I could see the second drive because I'm running Linux and/or the way I formatted the sd or the extension...
Sent from my HERO200 using Tapatalk
I think what you are describing is your SD-EXT partition (the a2sd partition you made). If you have a 2GB card and partitioned your card to be .5GB EXT, then it will appear your SD is 1.5GB. You get what I'm saying?
I used to be able to see 2 partitions as well. I think it was only with 1.5 ROMs.
If you want to mount both partitions then all you need to do is reboot into recovery and select the USB mount. Then both partitions will show up.
But you really don't need to mess with that second partition. Go to the market and download Titanium Backup. That will backup all your apps and settings. Restoring is a little annoying to do since you have to click for every app but if you buy the donate version then you don't have to do that.

Well I just rooted, and of course I have some questions..

Nothing too big. I've searched everywhere on this and apparently this is supposed to work, but:
I can't get Live Wallpapers to work
and I can't get the Nexus Launcher to work. Both of these just force close.
Oh, and how do I use Apps2sd? Its greyed out in the settings menu and I can't touch it. Thanks in advance.
All of this has already been answered. Just search the thread of the rom you are using. I promise, its in there.
Thanks haha. Should've done that. But I didn't get anything answered on the Nexus Launcher. It just keeps force closing. Would you choose ADW or Nexus?
Hey Nikolai, what ROM did you use? I've been really busy with a new job and didn't want to get crazy after (finally) rooting, so I went with Ivan's 1.0 ROM. It's essentially the basic Verizon setup without the junk, and overclocking. Apps2SD doesn't work...grrr.
I'd like to try something with Apps2SD and Live wallpapers, but I don't want anything buggy.

Launcher Pro is a lot faster than both of those. I would choose that.
im just wondering. now that im rooted what specific apps do you guys reccomend? i have Fresh Rom installed with overclocking just curious what other utilities i should get
A2SD has to have the SD card partitioned. You can do this in the Recovery menu where you flash new ROMS. It will erase everything so make a backup of what you want from your SD Card first then in the partitioning setup it ask for a swap and ext3 size default it is 32mb for swap and 512mb for ext3. After that you should be able to turn A2SD on.
If you choose, and shortly after you turn A2SD on you will, to stop using A2SD repeat the same steps for partitioning the SD card but when you are asked sizes scroll the track ball down till it is 0 for both swap and ext3.
I don't like it because I don't feel like buying a Class 4 SD card or higher to make it worth while. If you are using the stock SD card you got with the phone it will make your phone boot slower and take longer to access the Apps.
I don't know what ROM you are using but the KaosFroyo ROM is a great ROM it is small and that will save you more room for apps if that is what you are looking for.
this thread has nothing to do with development for the eris. can someone please move this to general?

I think I know why apps2sd slowed down your phone. You selected 32mb for swap. I selected 0 for my swap and it's been fast on every apps2sd enabled rom I've used. I bought a class 6 sd card thinking it would make my phone even faster but that was joke. My wife's Eris has the stock class 2 card and I can't tell a difference in the speeds.
I also agree with LexusBrian400 above. Launcher Pro is my favorite launcher. Play around in the preferences for a bit. It has some cool options.
snyluc13 - You need setcpu (or some other app) to control the overclock. Do not set on boot until you have found a setting that wont lock your phone.

To Partition SD card and Flash KINGDOM Guide :D

1. BACK UP YOUR MEMORY CARD TO YOUR COMPUTER AS THIS WILL ERASE EVERYTHING!!==== THIS IS IMPORTANT
2. Reboot into recovery (Use Amon RA 2.3==NOTHING OTHER THEN AMON )
3. Select =Partition sdcard=
4. Select =Partition SD=
5. Set swap to 0 (you can leave this at 32mb, I did.)
6. Ext2-size = 2048 (2GB - the 3.0 packages eat up a lot of the internal memory, you can adjust this lower, but 2GB is recommended if you have a lot of apps I did 2 and a half)
7. Select upgrade ext2 to ext3 ===DO NOT UPGRADE EXT 3 TO EXT 4=====
8.. Now go back and mount your SD card
9.. Place all your files back on the card. Also add the ROM, PRI 1.77 downgrade is recommended you will have WAKE ISSUES IF YOU DON'T.
10. If you have to flash the PRI, do so now and reboot. If not, move on.
12. Wipe everything you normally would prior to flashing a new rom.
13. Flash Kingdom
14. First boot takes about 3 to 5 mintues to get started.
15. ENJOY THE ROM FOLKS
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE LATEST OTA RADIOS.
THIS IS FOR ALL THE PEOPLE WHO WERE HAVING ISSUES WHEN THEY PARTITIONED THERE SD CARDS AND THERE PHONES COULDN'T BOOT THE ROM.
THOSE THAT HAD THE ISSUES MUST OF UPGRADED EXT 3 TO EXT 4 WHEN THEY PARTITIONED. IT'S NOT THE ROM IT WAS USER ERROR PEOPLE.
IF YOU DID UPGRADE EXT 3 TO EXT 4 YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BOOT THE ROM YOU GET STUCK AT THE BOOT SCREEN AND IT WILL HANG. ONLY WAY TO FIX THAT IS TO WIPE THE SD CARD AND RE PARTITION.
DO NOT BLAME THE DEVS FOR SOMETHING YOU DID WRONG. THANKS
THERE IS A GFX FIX THAT SMOOTHS THE ROM OUT. GET IT THEN AFTER THE ROM IS INSTALLED REBOOT TO RECOVERY AND WIPE CACHE AND DAVLIX CACHE FLASH AND YOUR ALL GOOD. I WILL POST THE ATTACHMENTS TONIGHT FOR YA.
IF YOU ARE ON THE NEWEST KINGDOMS SUCH AS 6/22 OR GREATER NO NEED FOR THE GFX FIX. HOPE YOU GUYS LOVE KINGDOM.
I am not liable if you brick your sd card I don't know anyone that has so have fun folks.
Hope this helps stop people from hammering virus and dogging the rom's.
It's funny how people on the kingdom thread ask for directions but never look in the general threads to flashing kingdom or browse the threads on there for the info. Kingdom works fine.

part of the issue is that as a noob to rooting and flashing we are overly excited and are full of questions. i love the kingdom roms and hate that i can not ask questions in the thread regarding any issues i may be having or even a simple question like how to properly flash it. ive attempted to use the search thread and still its confusing. so i appriciate it when i come across something like this that teaches us noobs how to do it. a little instruction goes along way. ive tried to navigate the xda site on my own and have actually learned more through thread such as this than i did going solo! anyway thanks for all the help hope to pay it forward someday

Also do you still recommend to repeat step 7 three times?

I mount in recovery?
I upgraded ext2 to ext3, says it's complete, then I went down to "Mounts", then "Mount /sdcard"......did nothing but change to "Unmount /sdcard".
Nothing else has come up.
Am I suppose to just reboot after the "ext2 to ext3" is complete?
Just enabled "USB-MS" and my SD card came up.
I don't know if that's something I should have done a while ago, but it looks like it's transfering all my .zips and my Titanium Backups to the SD card.
Maybe add that option to the tutorial for dopes like me who didn't have the USB-MS function enabled!

Maybe add that option to the tutorial for dopes like me who didn't have the USB-MS function enabled!

Checked the running processes for ones to kill?
Yes I have checked all processes and nothing is abnormal. I have plenty of free memory left. I read something about partitioning the SD card? Any validity to this for this ROM? I mean this EVO I now very slow and I rooted bc I thought my stock ROM was slow. I read nothing but good things about this ROM just trying to figure out why mine is different.

I would recommend partitioning your sd card - it is easy. Do you already have Amon Ra recovery installed? If so, start here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158993&highlight=amon+partition
If not, start here:

I would also uncheck the Vibrate feedback option located in Settings > Sound > Vibrate feedback
Im not particularly concerned about saving my current ROM's configuration. IS there step by step instructions on how to partition this SD card and install the ROM to the correct partitions

Yes, there are instructions for step by step. It's fairly easy. The ROM will not be partitioned onto your sd, just apps that you download. Once you partition the SD and get the rom running, I would recommend running terminal emulator and running commands a2sd reinstall and a2sd cachesd, but only run these commands after you download the apps you want, for best performance sake. I would also recommend looking into scripts such as v6 or juwe RAM optimizer. Personally, I use juwe and I think its better, but that's just my opinion.

Sounds good, is there a link to said instructions

Need Help with HD2 storage/Partitioning

Hey guys, I;m appealing for a little help here.
I have an HTC HD2 which has been great for about a year but all of a sudden it has problems.
I;ve been using this rom pretty much since it came out....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905060
I;ve never had any problems with it untill now. I started to get the "insufficient storeage space available" message on it so I assumed a restore/reflash would solve the problem.
I used HD2 toolkit to resize my MAGLDR partition to 450MB & reflashed - the phone wouldnt boot. Stuck on the HTC logo.
Repartitioned to 400 - still no boot!
Repartitioned to 350 - still no boot!
Repartitioned to 300MB - phone now boots however now, I;ve installed no apps & when I try to install spotify, its telling me insufficient storeage available, again! With nothing on the phone except the ROM!
I'm a bit of a n00b with all this stuff, but had my HD2 running fine for ages & its frustrating me that now it wont work properly!
Anyone care to help? THanks, Cardz.
Edit: im using MAGLDR 1.13 & the latest Clockwork mod to flash the ROM. I'm wiping cache & data partitions every time...... :/
Install it with as lower as possible space for system partition. In your case it shoud be 135MB of system partition and 2MB cache but I recommend to put some more of space for system partition as I had some problems with low system partition so you can put 150MB for system partition.
The simple explanation of why you dont have enough of space for apps is that you gave too much of space for system partition and simply this ROM does not require that much of space for system partition. And other space left in your phone memory will be used for apps etc.
EDIT: And also try to install MAGLDR and CWM manually if you can and when you install CWM edit flash.cfg in WordPad or other text editing tool before you flash CWM and edit system partition size to 150MB and Cache size to 2MB

Thanks a lot for the reply, i understand now about the 150MB/2MB cache, but what is the point of this other bit? Could you explain more the purpose of this?>

Well to simply explain you why i wrote you to use manual installation of CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY was that I wanted to explain you how is it working with partitioning your nand memory using cwr or magldr. I just added some helpfull info for you from my experience with HD2 and android flashing. So in the future you will know what to do and you will be able to uderstand more from technical point of view about flashing etc. I just wanted.to share some of my experience with you
But it is up to you if you want to use hd2 toolkit or manual configuration.

You can also use 4ext recovery instead of clockwork...

Afaik it's better to post in a similar topic than create a new one, so here I go.
I have recently switched to an ICS NAND rom and since then I keep having constant storage problems. I understand that in order to solve that I have to partition my SD card but it seems, since I don't really understand the whole android storage management process too deeply, I am not doing things properly cause I keep getting "Low on space" notifications. I attach some screenshots below in order to give you more info about my sd card partitions and rom specs. Please let me know what I did wrong and how I can solve it. I understand I will probably need to repartition and reflash the devide again?
Edit: The screenshots I have attached don't have 2nd part mounted, going to upload proper screens in a minute. Done.
Edit 2: Will this fix my problems?

You are mixing different things. In the first post of this thread the issue was the partitioning of the internal Flash-ROM in the Phone.
You wrote about the SD card partitioning and these things are totally different.
I think, you have a problem with your internal memory and you have to try the same things like cardyology has done after the hint from jan.selep.
Partitioning for Ubuntu's users
I don't find the way to modify partitioning of the internal Flash-ROM when you are an Ubuntu user on PC (no Windows boot anywhere..)

If you use cLK instead of magldr you can repartition from the cLK bootloader, , no PC necessary.
Before you say 'I cant install cLK without a PC', there is a version of cLK you can flash from sd card.
It will mean you have to resinstall your rom, though.
I believe more simple to find a Windows PC...
dont see why it should take any more than 25 minutes to accomplish, properly prepared.

Hummmm because the Murphy's law? :crying:
I found a Windows PC, I downloaded the HD2 Toolkit... but not the good one, because the last version don't works with 32 bits PC. So, I found the good one, I saved all my stuff, I tried to repartition and... I miss a dll and other bull****... 2 hours later, I thought is too long to be good and I sought a lighter ROM (I understood Hyperdroid CM7 has a 150 Mo system partition : it's very short!), but, I found nothing with ICS or JB, only GB... pfff.
So, I took a week to flash ROM, I read miles of thread, hours to understand how my device working and each time I found a solution, each time I have at less a new issue to solve. It pissed me of.
