Help me Understand Storage on my 101

I have just bought an Archos 101 16gb and downloaded just a few small apps.
I got a "Low on Space" notification today....but i cant understand why. Under /settings/staorage in shows under "Internal Storage" total space 14.44GB and available space 14.15GB.
I dont have an SD card yet
On system storage it says Avaialable space 25.25MB
Can someone help me understand whats going on here. Whats the differnce between Internal Storage and System storage and where do apps get stored by default....

System Storage is storage for apps that you can't put on internal storage or and SD card. Now, in order for you to only have 25mb free, you must have put a lot of data on there as well. I have a whole boatload of apps on my system and still have 162mb free on system storage (most are not on the SD). If you were to think of system storage in computer terms, it would be like RAM memory.

Finally, there is external storage. This is for things like flash drives and external hard drives.

Thank you that. Really helpful. So on my internal storage or "Hard Drive" I just have two apps, Aldiko and World Newspapers, totally 9mb.....
I had a look under /manage applications/downloaded and their is the AppsLib icon with 120MB next to it. That cant be right surely. This is just the Archos AppsLib app..... The MArket app is only 2.89 MB. If I look at the Application Infor for AppsLib under storage it says Total 120MB, Application 1MB and Data 119MB. What is this 119MB???
Also how do I set up storage preferences and what should they be.

OK, sotday the problem has changed. The missing 119MB of System storage has re-appeared. It seems that the AppsLib app which had shown 119MB of data cleared itself before I could uninstall it. No Idea why it had created 119MB of data in the first place.
So, can someone explain this for me. Not sure Im upto spead with this whole storage regime yet :-(
under /settings/storage "System Storage" was showing 119MB available.
I then downloaded Angry Birds (1.87 MB) and Angry Birds Seasons (1.99MB). Then checking /settings/storage "System Storage" now shows 104MB.
Next checking /settings/applications/manage applications and then clicking the "On Internal Strorage" tab I see the two Angry Birds apps there on Internal Strorage.
So my question is how come my "System Storage" has gone down by 15MB when the two apps only add up to less than 4MB. But, as manage apps shows them on the internal storage i.e. my 16gb storage, why did my system storage available space change at all. I'm very confused........
Update. I just checed AppsLib under /settings/applications/manage applications and its showing under application infor "Stroage" Total 41.46MB, Appkication 1.0MB and Data 40.46 MB. Whats going on here. What is the 40.46MB of data made up of. Its eating my System Storage.....Why?

have you installed Dolphin Browser HD or something similar?
In the options you can set cache to write into System Storage....
You should set the option to write cache into sdcard instead!!
Remember first to delete all caches...
I don't know if in the standard browser there is a similar option...

Honestly Pete, I have no idea what to tell you. I mean I'm not doing anything special and I have about 60 apps installed and still have 120mb of system storage, about 5gb of my 8gb internal storage and my 8gb SD card is maxed out with movies, music, documents, and some e-books I'm reading.
I have angry birds (not seasons...not feeling Christmas at the moment) and several other games as well.
I haven't done anything with the apps other than hit the "install" button. I know there are a lot I can move to SD, but since I don't need to I haven't.
The system memory does jump around though. As you use applications, load and unload, etc. Try using Archos's task manager to stop all apps, wait like 10 seconds (1 hippopotamus, 2 hippopotamus type 10 seconds...) , then check your storage. I bet that might be the issue. Hell, it almost has to be!

Thankyou. I think Im getting there. I noticed that in /settings/apps/manage apps the Archos AppsLib was showing 120MB. Weird I thought. So looking that the App Info for it said App 1MB data 119MB.
So I have uninstalled, re-booted and then sideloaded the latest build of AppsLib from Arcos. No App Info shows 1MB. Magically Angry Birds re-appeared too ...
This sounds like it has something to do with the problem and I now have to keep an eye on AppsLib to make sure it doesnt start eating System Storage Again.....
This seems very unusual to me. Maybe something is coded incorrectly by Archos in their latest release of AppsLib. Can others please tell me what amount of Data AppsLib has created on their devices? Thanks.
I havent got an external SD card yet, so I think that's going to be a must. Whats the biggest SD card that it can take? 32GB???
I should maybe also get Apps2SD. There seems a few versions out there. Who's the author of the one everyone here has loaded?

My appslib is 0.93mb of that, only .02mb is the data part.

Thanks. Mine is curretly 1.05MB. The data part being 0,05MB. I'll keep an eye on it now I have re-installed to make sure it doesnt creep up again. What version are you running?

Im still having problems in thw whole storage and could do with some help.
The System Storage is listed as 299.44mb available when I look in App2sd. It shows I have 86.29mb available.
Using App 2 SD it shows the list of immovable apps on the System Storage. When I add up their indivdiual file sizes it comes to 65.919mb.
So where is the other 147.23mb gone?
Is System Storage where the Android OS sits? If so would that account for 147mb?

No, the OS is on a different partition, specifically a mounted squashfs. There will always be more data on the /data partition(System Storage) than is listed in the Applications menu. Keep in mind all the System Apps (ones you didn't install) will still need to store databases, settings, etc. on the /data partition, because the OS partition is read only.
147mb seems like alot, but my Archos has about the same amount of storage available(~86mb), and I have about the same amount of installed apps(~65mb), so I guess it's right.

No problem. I never really did the math, but it seems like an awful lot is used by non-download apps. I may have to do some crawling through the file system to see what's using so much.

If you discover anything please let me know. 147mb seems a lot to have gone missing
I contacted Archos support and they gave this answer:
"Dear Customer,
The information given by the 3thd party software is not correct, we do not support 3thrd part software.
Kind Regards,
Archos Technical Support"
So they are not helpful at all. Given the amount of money we pay for these devices you'd think they wouldnt just dissmiss my request for support and perhaps try and help even a little bit....

Do you both think that an operatingsystem can run without any memoryneeds?
Android is build for small memory devices but it still needs some memory or all that ui, threading, file and other services.
It is a bare Linux which consumes around 100MB depending on the features you have installed/switched on.

[Q] Error:"Low on space"

I got this error message appears in the right lower corner of the screen: Low on space.
I check the storage of xoom, 29GB was used by apps. Then I check the storage used by each apps, none of them used more then 25MB storage, the total should be less than 250Mb.
could anyone help me about this issue? Thanks.

There is no media in the device.

29GB used by apps??? What apps do you have installed?

This is obviously an error on how the hardware is reporting available space to the device. Not totally sure how to fix it....

Huh, strange one. Maybe do a factory reset? Definitely a problem.

It seems that I have no other choices.

Wow I don't know if there are enough apps in the market to fill over 29 GB.

I I just got the same error out of nowhere. 29 gig plus use by my apps. I load up the apps and the biggest one is my gallery with 1.9 gb. There's definite problem reporting somewhere.

Delete some of the more "low rent" apps. Probably bad programming throwing the xoom off.

I just wanted to confirm this just happened to me yesterday as well. I had just checked my storage (aprox. 1.5gb media/2gb apps) then crashed out for a quick nap. About an hour later I awoke, rolled over, grabbed my Xoom and discovered I had the same dreaded memory notification that has plagued my Incredible. Checked storage and suddenly had like 28gb in my apps! Market quit working because of this as well, couldn't update or install apps. I found no other solution other than factory reset as deleting the apps one by one did not free up the space. The last 2 apps I recall downloading were friendstream and tablet keyboard. I was thinking an errant app was downloading all sorts of stuff as I was connected to wifi or perhaps didn't know how to properly utilize the Xoom's memory as it is a little different than your standard Android device. If this is a system OS issue as it is with my Inc, this is totally unacceptable and needs to be identified and addressed by google soon.
Anyone have any other ideas on what is causing this or how to help identify where/how exactly our memory space is vanishing?

Happened to me too. Factory reset 'resolved' it, but didn't really do anything to figure out what the root cause of the issue is... I went so far as to uninstall all the large games on my Xoom and no luck.

Internal storage full, says apps=12.25GB

Hello,
an error popped up on my a500, claiming internal storage is almost full. When I press the popup I'm taken to a list of apps where the title claims the same (applications using 12.25GB of 16GB). But I have only downloaded say 20 apps, and when I sum up the space they occupy individualy I don't count any further than <200MB. What can be wrong here? Does media files which belongs to the apps (say NFS game) don't count?

I have the same problem. Posted here a few days ago. This is a known problem on the zoom as well. No one knows what the cause is so what I did was reset the tablet. :-(

try to check with file manager if you see some weird data... inside your tablet.

Also have this problem. Apps showing almost 8GB, which is impossible. Same amount of apps on my Xperia X10, and my internal storage still has plenty of space.
Saw this when I manually upgraded from 3.0.1 to 3.1. Before and after, the app usage still shows almost 8gb.

I found out once when I was messing with my tablet that you have an additional setting when you go to manage apps screen. There is also the USB storage section which doesn't get erased when you remove an app so you should not only check how many apps are installed but also if one of the apps uses a big amount of USB storage (like youtube or browser).

Look for very large (or very many medium- to -large) files in /data/tombstones. Best I can tell these files are storage from crashed apps; I've never had any problems arise when I removed them.
For some reason this folder doesn't show when using File Manager HD, so you may need to use Root Explorer (I uninstalled ES File Manager so not sure if it shows up there.)

Continually "insufficient storage"

I have a rooted S5 w/ 16GB of internal storage, but I'm rarely able to update/download new apps. I have to scrounge for apps to delete for a half hour just to get it to let me download a new app or update an app. I have moved just about all the apps I can to the SD card (32GB, less than half used).
In the storage screen it says I have used 14.88GB in apps, and <20MB in everything else with "Free space" around 400-500MB. I usually have to get it to mid 500s before it will let me do anything on it. To make matters worse, somehow the apps I uninstall keep reinstalling themselves.
My problem seems to be this big "Applications" thing - which isn't right. I have some large apps, but they keep all their data on the SD card (like podcasts with PocketCasts). On my applications manager, from top down in size - facebook @ 190MB, google play services at 156MB, google app at 134MB... dropping off fairly quickly after that, so no way its 15GB worth.
What am I missing? Do others constantly have this problem? It is getting ridiculous! No reason that I can see that there should be a big bunch of stuff that is counted as used when it isn't.
Some things I've tried:
I heard about something the dumpstate/logcat, I cleared it but nothing got better
I used adb to set the default install location to the external SD card (I forget the exact command), as far as I can tell it is still trying to install in the internal SD card.
Any suggestions or more information needed?

More information thanks to DiskUsage (forgot I can download APKs - which install fine). It shows my internal SD card breakdown as 10796MB overall, 2612MB app data, 7815MB "System data", and 340MB free space (plus some other misc. that makes up the difference). I don't have a great understanding of how this is partitioned, but I'd imagine the ~16GB has 5GB off limits for ROM stuff? Then what is taking up nearly 8GB as "System data"? Is this normal?

Looks like it was creating duplicates in data/app (on a lot of phones I think this is data/app-lib). I used root explorer to purge the duplicates, and now have nearly 3GB free instead of a couple hundred MB!

I'll check that out the next time I am able to install an app but I should mention I also tap the "cached data" in the storage manager thing (in settings). Usually doesn't work I also use CleanMaster, which seems like it works, some times.
EDIT: Just checked it out, that's awesome! I have been looking for this kind of app, I use WinDirStat on windows that does something similar.

Disappearing internal storage space each day without doing anything Please help!

Galaxy S5 G900V Verizon
AOSP Rom 8.0.1 Oreo
My phone is working great for the most part except every few days I have to restore my TWRP backups because internal storage space starts decreasing for no reason. I start out at about 6.33GB then a couple days later i'm down to 4GB or less. No installation of apps and all photos/videos/downloads go to my external SD card. I researched the issue and have installed the app DiskUsage but can not find any apps adding storage. I have also went into Device/System/Bin and went to Dumpstate and Dumpsys properties and unchecked write and execute. I clear all app caches and davilk all the time and restart phone. But problem still persists! Since my phone isnt stock I can not access the #0990# or whatever the code is to access the menu to delete dumpstate as going thru dialer does not pull up the hidden menu even tho hidden menu is marked 'ON' in my settings. I'm getting a bit annoyed by this internal storage issue! Any ideas? Anyone!?
UPDATE: 12/22/2019 I restored backup again and took screenshot list of all app sizes to compare for later when storage drops. I've found out most of my apps are taking up more space and i'm not referring to just cache without doing anything the ones that I hardly use or know that dont save data. Why is this happening!? I went from 60% to 68% taken space over night.

Did you ever sort this out? I am having the same problem with a custom rom on my rooted A3 2017.

No it's still an ongoing issue despite weather I use the android version mentioned, 7.1.2 or Android 11. Something to take note I never had this issue on STOCK roms that I can recall or before Android made the decision to use Adaptable storage for apps I want to say that happened in 2015 or 16. Previously you could just put most apps on external sd card.

My issue with disappearing internal memory appears to have settled down. I've installed the "Disk usage and storage analyser" app from the play store and for the last week my internal storage has been stable at 4GB. Don't know why but the app seems to be limiting the amount of internal memory that the apps can take.
I'll give it another week and see if things take a turn for the worst.

I think I might have talked to you about this app before. Anyhow nope it didnt work for me. In the past week in storage has ballooned to more than a gig. I have to restore my phone anywhere from every couple weeks to a month because of the storage issue. Apps are writing to internal storage once installed. Thanks for trying to help with the situation.

Try something like SD Maid to clear the caches.
Google Play Services and other Google apks are notorious for building "useless" bloat data bases.
Make sure Google Firebase is disable.
Find the data hog 3rd party apps and take the trash apps out. Multiple browsers are prime targets.

Thanks for the tips! I did install SD Maid it's helped clear out space but still having the issue. I looked into disabling Google Firebase but I can't find where it's located? I don't have too many apps installed and just Chrome browser. Most stock apps are trashed.

Phone settings under Google.
Disabling Google play Services probably will kill it too although the data will remain.

Yeah I can't find firebase under google settings. Disabling google services will make Google product apps stop working. I need PlayStore, Gmail and Maps etc.
