[Q] 77% battery down to 9% after reboot - Epic 4G General

Today I was going to browse the web and the phone decided to freeze. The bottom light were on, but would not do anything. Hit the back arrow and nothing. The screen was black as well.
At that time I had 77% battery, and decided to just reboot the phone. I hit the power button, rebooted and then once it rebooted the phone said charge battery and was at 9%. I was like...WTF? So I decided to reboot again and then I got 27%
The phone is at 27% now and never went back to the 77% before it was frozen and I rebooted.
Does anyone know what caused this, or why it would have done this? Seems odd to me it can be at 77% and then go to 9% doing nothing but a reboot after frozen. Not only that, rebooting again took it to 27%
I haven't the slightest idea where to begin.

this has happened to me after rebooting sometimes for flashing kernels, no idea why

Flashing eats up battery, that's why they usually say make sure you have a good charge beforehand.
As to the OP, same stuff happens to me too :/ still not sure why

Happened to me a lot also. Thank god I have multiple batteries. Happened a lot more when DI18 was just starting to get custom roms/kernels

Ditto - has happened to me once. Last week.

this has happend to me as well....not sure why....
but what's funny, it seems just the battery gauge (i have tried 3 of them) gets messed up...
few days ago i was at 65%, rebooted and came back at 14%.... i surfed the web for 30min and it stayed at 14%....obviously it must had dropped...
only displayed properly after it fully charged overnight to 100%.

Hmmm....Had no idea there would be people with this problem. So looks like we are all clueless.
I do have a custom Kernel and Bonsai, but this is really the first time this has happened, so there has to be a glitch with something but I am just not sure what.
More than likely my guess would be something with either an app, or a kernel and setcpu, but it's a wild guess.

I've had this happen to me before, several times in fact, while using custom roms while on DK28. Most recently with Bonsai.
Never happened with the stock tho.

Same Here
it has happened to me before.....havent the slightest idea why

This had been an issue that was one of the many things not fixed in eb13, the reboot mod can bring the worst out in it in my experiance too. After a few times of happening and a few drains/charges it hasn't happened since, but keep a spare battery or charger on ya just in case
Sent From My Epic Bonsai Tree

This happened to me today as a matter of fact. And this of what it looks like in juice plotter. I'm not sure about the gaps but notice it goes straight down then straight up after another reboot. It then jumps up again after I plugged it in to charge.

I really really like the Bonsai ROMs but (for me) I noticed this ALOT while using the Bonsai DK28 builds... Very frustrating. When it freezes up, do a battery pull..
I did not have it happen (to me) using stock (rooted) EB13, nor have I had it happen (yet) using the ACS frozen build w/ OC/UV kernel. To be fair, I've only been running the ACS ROM/kernel for a week.
You can tell when it's gonna lock up though too if you pay attention, the phone starts to lag, data gets all wonky, almost like a car sputtering and running out of gas.. if you can catch it during this 'wonky' time, reboot or do a battery pull, it can save some frustration.
Something is causing it and I'm wondering if we can get a logcat before or during the 'happening' ?
Just curious

Looking at my phone this morning, I can say that something is making the battery read as if it was lower than it was.
Here is what I got. It happened when I was shopping yesterday around 3:45pm.
I came home, saw it was at like 29% down from the 77% and didn't use it much. I did check twitter and for a few updates, but that was it.
It was around 10:45pm and guess what? The phone STILL SHOWED 29%
I thought to myself...now how in the world can it still be that and not drop 1%? Something must be making it show that when it is actually much higher. Maybe it went from 77% down to 55%, but the display shows 29% even when it isn't.
Decided to leave the phone unplugged while I went to bed. Got up a few minutes ago and guess what? 8hrs and 45min off the charger at the 29% and guess where it is?
Yes, 29% still. So from 3:45pm till 7:15am it is still showing it is at 29% battery. No way that is correct in any way. The phone has been unplugged for 36hrs.
15hrs of it being unplugged it was showing 29%. I thought when I got home that surely the battery would just keep dropping and never moved 1% in 15hrs.
So at 36hrs, you can tell it is great battery life, but that gauge is TOTALLY wrong and off, and something caused it to go haywire. I am starting to think it is the Kernels we are using with the overclock/undervolt. This is my only guess as I was using Bonsai 2.0 for the longest time and had no problems.
The only other thing installed aside from programs was the custom Twilight Zone Kernel.
I did just get on the web and the 29% went down to 25% in like 60 sec, so if it can go down 0% in 15hrs and then all of the sudden 4% in one minute, you know something is totally wrong battery wise.

When this has happened to me before, I was able to pull battery and restart and it went back up about 60%

Just pulled it and it went down to 19% from the 25% before I pulled it.
Where the hell all of these crazy % come from is beyond me. I wish I new why it couldn't just all be correct.
Oh well, the Nexus S 4G may be coming out, so who knows. Maybe i'll sell this phone and get one. (We can thank Samsung if this happens with people)
However, I am SO GLAD we have devs to try and fix things and make things better that Samsung never could do.
Since it is a rare occurrence, its not that big of a deal. I just wish I knew why when the phone freezes and we reboot, the battery decides to bite the dust.

While we've all probably experienced the loss of significant battery after reboot, yesterday I had the opposite happen.
I was down below 10% battery left, rebooted and then had 42% battery left. I did recalibrate after flashing genocide last week, so I'm a little confused about this one.

Clear batterystats in CWM. Worked for me when I was ok DK28.

I was all excited to see major improvement in my battery life. Went for 24 hours of modestly active use and battery only went down to 39%. Read this post, rebooted and now I'm at 9%!

Yeah it is great. I generally lose 0-1% on 8 hours of standby with WiFi on.
yea and yours is stock right? imagine what we can get out of it with more reliable battery saving kernels
It's awesome although I never very high tablet idle because I have a bunch of crap running in the background - GMail, 3 IMAP accounts every 10 mins, Twitter every 15 mins, Facebook every 30 mins, etc etc.
I still get about 8 hours of standby on 10% of battery with WiFi. When I'm on 3G though it drains a lot quicker.

One thing that caught my eye which seems to not be a problem as it was on my htc incredible is that something (app related) is keeping my xoom awake. For example the xoom batter says its been on for 4 hours and the awake time (under system status) says 4 hours. I couldnt figue out which app was causing this so I did a test to see if this awake time was actually draining battery as it was on my incredible.
In short I charged my battery to 100% before going to bed and restarted xoom to start from 0hours awake and 0hours battery use. Checked it 8 or 9 hours later and saw that my awake time was exactly that of battery use time however my battery read 100% with that much time being awake (by app).
Thus the awake time although drained my incredible does not impact my xoom enough to really care about. Hopefully this may help if anyone else is OCD about awake versus sleep times.

IIRC, I read a post somewhere here saying this awake problem was caused by the WeatherBug app (IIRC that is ).

Yeah I read that as well. I dont have weatherbug though! I dunno what it is, I tried deleting apps and testing and couldnt find the culprit. Seems to not impact the battery whatsoever as I tested it overnight with 100% battery charge and woke up with 100% battery despite being awake all night.
The only thing that stays awake in my running services it seems is my android keyboard so it may be related to that or an app keeping my keyboard awake. All other processes are consistant with the screen on time.

If this guys phone has the HIV, i'm [email protected]#$ed!
I'm losing 10% in 10 minutes! Absolutely ridiculous. I'm on EC05. Auto brightness off. Brightness to the lowest setting. Stock, rooted, removed some bloatware but left DRM stuff.
This is after pulling it off the charger from 100% and a fresh reboot. I just toggled airplane so my TWS was at 21% when I took these screenshots.
EDIT: I've already calibrated my battery after updating from EB13 to EC05 and wiped batt stats.
I dont know about 10% every 10min..but I also noticed battery usage skyrocket in 1.1.0 from 1.0.2..and I didnt even install any software yet or customized anything..its effectively clean rom....
what stands out is standby....im at:
standby: 51%
display: 34%
phone idle: 15%
and I havent even touched the phone at all :/ (you can see that by the huge idle amount)
It used to be like 90% display before...and everything else was under 10%.I even turned off Google Syncing.

I've had sleep issues ever since DK28. The phone will randomly stop sleeping, and will barely last 12 hours on battery with *zero* usage. Sometimes a reboot will fix it for a few hours, then it will just randomly stop sleeping again. I tried everything to fix it, flashed EC05 three times, twice by going back to DI18 with odin and flashing update.zip, and once by flashing the pre-rooted tar from android-central. Didn't even install any apps or anything after the last flash and left pretty much everything stock, still does it. When it's not sleeping, spare parts usually shows a running time of over 70%, even if I've got the phone sitting in my pocket or on my desk all day. There's nothing under partial wake that shows any kind of significant usage. It'll be "awake" for 8 hours, but there's no evidence in spare parts as to what's eating up those 8 hours.
Tried killing DRM service, toggling airplane mode, leaving phone IN airplane mode, wifi/gps/bluetooth disabled, rebooting, clearing dalvik cache, wiping data, and probably some other things I can't remember off the top of my head. The last thing I tried was pulling the battery for 5 or 10 minutes. Oddly enough, it's been trouble-free since then. Probably just a coincidence and it'll stop sleeping any minute now.
I have had the same problem. I think the problem is under sensor usage. The android system is using it a lot of the time.

I was actually just looking at that and see sensor going 5%-10% cpu usage..
This has happened to me a few times since upgrading to SRF 1.1.0.
The phone will get really hot and burn through my battery at an alarming rate.
What I usually do is shut down, pull the battery, and let everything cool and then all goes back to working normally.
Very strange, but at least there's a relatively easy temporary fix.
Recalibrated the accelometer..lets see if that helps..
Are you using the new Telenav GPS app? It downloaded 6 Gigs of data in 5 days on my phone, draining battery like a boss.
nah i only use google nav and i havent needed to use it in a few weeks
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Well, after driving for around an hour my phone's battery dropped from a ~30% charge to dead.
Luckily I seem to have been spared the data corruption I often hear about with non-journaled ROMs and power cuts like that (seems to be the only glitch I never get).
Something strange is going on, almost as though the phone is constantly running a benchmark (since it gets rather warm, as well).

Bad battery?

Today I went to use the GPS on my phone and it lasted about 2 min battery still showed at 60% but phone just keeps turning off. When you turn it back on sometimes it shows 50-60% sometimes 1-2% I turned my phone off and let it charge for 4 hours same thing after just a few min on GPS and I can't take a picture with flash at all when it is acting up. The only reason I'm not sure if the battery is the problem is issue looks to be hit and miss right now my phone is taking pictures with flash just fine on battery but I'm not sure how long it will last. My battery is over a year old so I feel that it may be the problem. Has anyone had this problem I don't want to get a new battery just to find out something else is wrong with the phone.
Let me guess:
Two possibilities.
A) gps cable is not plugged correctly so that it might cause an electric jam with other components?
B) a heavy rom sided crash when turning on the gps?

Well it is not just the GPS but I have not checked the cable. I'm not in a place that I can feel ok taking the phone apart. The phone turns off when using the camera flash sometimes so I'm 98% sure it is just the battery that has gone bad. I'm waiting for my new battery in the mail and will update. As of right now I can use the phone and GPS but I can't expect to get more then 5min out of it. I was just shocked at how it stopped working overnight.
Well you can try out with the new battery. It is at least safer than opening the phone. Let s put the openphone stuff into the worst case.
Sent from my Black Ice'd Glacier using XDA App
OK so I got my new batteries in from HERE and everything is working right again. The new batteries are both 1700mah and the battery dock/usb charger is great. I still need to cycle both batteries a few times but so far under super load (gps,4g,games,wifi,flashlight, camera all at once for 30+ min) I have not put more then a 30% drain on them.
On the the next question I do feel that my stock battery should have lasted me longer (lasted less then 6 months). That and my problems started out of the blue with no real warning or loss of charge time. I was doing some reading about Lithium-Ion batteries and I'm now sure my nonstop ROM flashing and some of the "safe" overcharge tweaks caused this problem. After every ROM flash I would calibrate my battery by charging over night deleting the bin and then letting the phone die to the point I could not get it to turn on. Come to find out this is VERY BAD for Lithium-Ion batteries. The next thing i did was use the overcharge again VERY BAD because it can lead to build up inside the battery. In fact to get max life out of a Lithium-Ion it should only be charged to around 80%.
Lesson learned only flash ROM's at 100% battery so you have no need to do a battery cal, and never use a overcharge "tweak" unless you want to spend some money / time without your phone as you wait for a new battery. Missed some great pictures of my kids this weekend happy to have the extra battery now.
Take the battery out and look at it's profile. If it seems a bit swollen, replace it. I had a battery that would say like 60% and then seconds later my phone would shut down. Turns out my battery was kaput and had 'popped'. I picked up a used OEM one and a couple cheap ones off ebay. The OEM one, is where it's at. The others were crap even though they claimed 1800 mAh

The "all of the sudden" battery fix on ICS

I have been using my s2 only 1 day on GB so i cant really tell you was the battery life good or bad there, but i i have some news for ICS
stock ROM users.
I was actually really depressed by the ICS battery life (i upgraded from GB same day i bought brand new S2), battery life was terrible,
turning on/off syncing, mobile data, gps etc etc helped a bit, but not that much. i still couldent get full day out of it with moderate use.
Again, im on stock 4.0.3 atm.
And then, a miracle.
Let me say right away, i am aware that these types of batterys (i have stock one btw) dont react on this whole "fully discharge then recharge" thing, but i do think now Android ICS as a system does! Cuz it was exactly what i did-i said what the heck doesent hurt to try and i was playing games like crazy when battery was on 10 or less percent so it wld shut down. then, i connected charger and used as normal on charger until it was fully juiced. repeated 3-4 times and what do you know... i now get 50% OR MORE WITH THE SAME BATTERY!
I am not really sure what happend there. Did battery gauge reset? Did ICS "learned" my battery properly? I dont know. All i know is that i am now able to get trough whole day (i get up 7:00AM, go to sleep round 01:00) with only 1 full charge. I dont even bother turning off wifi sometimes when i go out and dont need it.
I have been also reading around the web that some people got the same result. No calibration trys, pulling battery etc etc...just let it go trough few cycles and let system/phone "calibrate by itself".
Not exactly sure if this is a solution, bug, feature or whatever. I just thought it was worth writing to you guys
cheers, loop
why dont u share some screenshots
np mate, but in evening or tomo morning when i come home
Well, you actually shortened your battery life span by draining your battery to nothing, you should probably google what happens when you drain lithium batteries, and how it affects capacity, and not just
dont react on this whole "fully discharge then recharge" thing

You probably did reset your fuel gauge as your phone had no power to hold the gage memory, but you could of saved yourself a lot of battery capacity, by using search and finding out how to reset the battery gauge on the Samsung galaxy s2. Hint* search extweaks and Siyah kernel.
Anyway at least other people who read this, hopefully learn and do it all the easiest and battery efficient way and not

Hope this helped, and for future reference do not drain lithium batteries, whether it is your phone, laptop, ps3 controller. Try not to get it under 50% for the best efficiency, but the more you drain it to minimum charge the faster it degrades.
Did you uninstall anything? Did you change any settings? Sounds to me like wakelocks that were removed more than ICS "learning" your battery.
Take it like this: i upgraded to ICS over GB and did full wipe. First day i installed lets say 20+ apps that i use. mostly utilities, few games.
In this period of "recovery" i only updated few apps, installed GTAIII and Flipboard.
Let me make this perfeclty clear as i stated in OP and as deniso wrote: i am aware of todays batterys and how do they work. i am not senior android user but i know my way around,so as i stated, i know i dident "FIX" the battery itself. But i still think the main problem here is not the battery itself, its how ICS uses it.
However this:
Try not to get it under 50% for the best efficiency
Click to collapse
is just... funny. "try not to" ok i get it, but below 50% is when u need your phone the most, should i carry a portable generator with me? no offense.
Please, do not throw rocks at me. I am aware what i wrote, and i am aware that it doesent makes sense with todays batterys and smartphones.
however,i still do have my better battery life, whatever u say or dont say.
Ill make some screenies when i come home.
Ty all for your feedback.
I said TRY not to, I personally use my phone all day and my battery only gets down to about 75% -85% at the end of the day, so it takes nothing special for our phones, unless you do heavy gaming or movie watching all the time.
And what I said, which wasn't throwing rocks at you, is that you probably just reset your fuel gauge as there was a lack of power to the memory chip, and like I said in my first post, Search EXTWEAKS and Siyah kernel as they have that exact function in them which does not require you to drain your battery below critical values or at all.
hello again, just posting screenies that i promised

(its in croatian, but you can see what is important)
So as i said before. This is roughly really 50% MORE then what i was getting first few days on ICS. now, i dont know still if this is very good or average, but
it gets me trough day for sure. As u can see, i posted "screen on" time, cuz i was not getting even half of that before and i still have 34% left!
The day was filled with 5-6 emails, i watched 4 youtube videos, did cca 29 mins on surfing and cca 30-35mins in plants vs zombies. few sms, few calls.
So, im not playin smart here or anything, i just have more batter with whatever i did, and it makes me happy
Cheers
You getting more battery after 3 days could quite simply be due to the fact that you flashed new firmware and it always takes a few days for the kernel and modem to 'settle in'. You will never get a true indication of battery drain straight after flashing firmware.
And to the guy above who said he can use his phone the whole day and it never falls below 75%, wow!
I would love to know what firmware, kernel/modem combo you're using.

Phone turned off by itself

Hi all
Hope someone can help with this problem.
Tonight my phone just randomly turned off. I wasn't doing anything strange..just texting. I sent a text and placed my phone down. Looked at it and hour and half later and it wasn't responding. I held down power and it powered on but noticed my battery dropped quite a bit.
I'm bone stock 4.2.2, no root and locked boot loader.

Mysteries like this one are not uncommon.
Text message couldn't be sent, phone kept re-trying, got hot, turned off?
Signal loss, connection derp, overheating, turned off?
Who knows. I'd lean towards overheating..
If it's only happened once, what's the issue? It could have restarted for a multitude of different reasons but if it's not doing it on a regular basis then it's not really an issue in my eyes.
Mine did this for the first time today after 2 and 1/2 months of flawless performance too. Really weird, wouldn't respond to any buttons, charger, or USB cable. No red flashing LED. Battery was at about 50%. Wasn't doing anything with it beforehand, it was asleep.
After about 15 minutes of nothing, it recognized the charger and booted back up.

I'm more concerned about the battery. Why the sudden drop off from 90% to 70%

I think the 4.2.2 OTA may have corrupted the battery stats file for some users.
I had a similar thing happen where it went from 30% then dropped to 2% after a simple reboot.
Based on my usage at that time, I should have had a lot less than 30%.
Now if your phone gets unusually HOT, you have bigger issues and may end up with the RED light of death

phone gets warm but not hot. usually when i'm watching a video it'll get warm.
My issue was different, no heat or battery issues. Was at about 50% when it blanked out and 48% by the time it came back.
If phone becomes hot, theres a defense mechanism in which our kernel will make phone run at lower clocks which eventually gets our phone into sleep of death. So try one thing. If ever ur phone gets hot, dnt lock the screen and keep it on a cold surface, and once it get cold, press the lock button. See the diff!!

Hopefully not! If you do, follow the guide in my signature.
just for good measure, i went back to bone stock 4.2.1 and installed the 4.2.2 update when it got pushed through and the same thing happened again. i didn't even install any apps - just what was in the factory google image. i was just lightly texting, locked my phone and looked at it a few mins later and it was off. this time my battery didn't change and i took notice of the temp of the phone and it was cool.
this only happened after the 4.2.2 update as for the couple of months of 4.2.1, i never had this issue. i've only had stock 4.2.2 for a little over a week.
i'm going back to stock 4.2.1 or maybe will try out a custom. if it does this on 4.2.1 stock, it's gotta be a h/w defect but i'm pretty confident it won't.
thx again all for your suggestions and help.
