Yes! Great work! Maybe it's just me, but it would be great if you could also put a description of each ROM in layman's terms. Personally, I don't find most of the descriptions provided by the devs in their first posts very helpful either. Since there is no audio I think it would be very helpful to know what's different about them.
If you are the dev of one of these ROMs or one not listed, maybe you will consider my request as well?

They are almost the same... It's android OS. The only difference I can notice is the colors of the interface. Sometimes there some apps mods and difference in the camera UI but everything about this is in the description of each ROMS threads.
TriPNMiUI is the one with the biggest changes. But I show em all in the video.

Someone should sticky this thread!

Which I said I don't find very helpful. Those descriptions assume you understand all the abbreviations and numbers. To someone familiar I am sure it is crystal clear, but for a noob trying to decide between ROMs it's a bit confusing. That's why I asked for it in layman's terms.
In response to your brief description, and please remember I am new to the development aspect... Why do we need/have four nearly identical mostly working ROMs, rather than people working together on one fully functional ROM? Does working on cracking the bootloader or the drivers for the camera require a different skill set than developing one of these ROMs?

One ring to rule them all?
You know what I want to know is where are the lawyers? With the official announcements regarding malware that requires a os update, I'm curious about the liability issues when you are locked in to a contract without a update to your locked device.

Now is the time, if any, to flood SE forums, blogs, comments, and email with this legitimate reason to update. No more unique X10 (2.1) user experience versus generic 2.2 being a fair alternative.

Thank you! thank you! thank you!!!!.... you have sorted out and condensed a lot of time showing actually working rom's to update my "first" love but now my girlfriends x10i
Good stuff ... i tell you.. one again thanks

What is the photo widget used in the first video? Its about 1m20s in to the video. Is it part of the arc launcher?

Hi,

You should make the videos with original package and without any add;
2nd tought
Great idea!!! Congrats

@JBM
allskin wasn't trying to not give you the answer in layman's terms, he was merely stating that if its froyo its all the same functionality wise. They all have basically the same speed and features. The difference mainly being visual, which the video works well at showing. If it has CM in the title or Cyanogen Mod it means that it includes a set of personalization options in the settings menu. The only fully working roms are those that are based on 2.1 eclair. Most the number notations are just version numbers which do not corrolate between roms in any way. Trips miui rom is only different because its functionality is designed around behaving like an iPhone. All the same features are still there though.
So really, its as simple as choosing if you want the cm options or not and if you want a iPhone style or not. Between the pics and these here videos, the visual effects/design will depend on what you like.
If you want more advice please feel free to pm me so we don't clog this thread with off topic discussion.

Compumasta, thanks for answering my question. Sorry, I really didn't think it was off topic. It was more of a clarification, but I am sure others will benefit from your answer as well.

[POLL] Eclair ROM ratings for users & devs 01/26/10

This post is a poll for users who like to test different ROM's to find out which one will be the "winner" over their device. Also it is used as a quick guide to find out which of the "ECLAIR ROMs" are the highest rated of the releases for users (and devs) to pick from the HUGE list of ones available rather than flashing, testing, re-partitioning, then re-flashing, etc etc.
I am not at all trying to flame, bash, or put down anyone's ROM that is less developed than others. I myself as I believe others like myself are interested in finding out which of the great ROM's released are by popular vote more exciting to use than others.
I also understand that different users have different opinions, and I as well as many others I know personally prefer totally different ROM's to use on our devices. So on that note, let everyone know of the list which ROM you believe gives you the best experience on your G1 & Mytouch3G / Dream & Magic devices by popular vote.
If I have left off any other ROM's that may be GREAT but just not posted in the poll please feel free to express the name, who it's by, and why you love it!
Thanks for your vote, I believe this will be of a lot of help to others like myself.
Hopefully this post is not considered "spam" and is more for an informational tool
This should be posted in the Dream/G1 Discussion board...not the G1 Android Development section...

Thanks for the correction, however most ROM users, and Dev's don't use the Dream/G1 discussion forum and i believe the intentions of this post would fall on deaf ears.
Ive found my leo to be more entertaining than my dreams, the 2.5 sense UI rom is a beast on it too.

Yes it does, You can see where the most excitement is drawn from which is neat... The poll has multiple answers enabled which I input due to the fact that myself like probably others like more and enjoy more than only 1 ROM, So if you do like 2 out of the bunch or anything feel free to express it and vote for another
You spelled "ratings" wrong in the title.
Remember, first impressions last a life time.

True indeed, this thread is not specifically dev related, but I find it to be very helpful and informative for those of us that are flashing these roms, gives the user an better idea of what to choose from when looking for a good eclair duplicate. And most users, like I, hardly ever visit the discussion board because they are so busy checking the dev forums for new releases and updates. Therefore I find this thread to be placed in a perfectly good position due to to its purpose. MODS please consider before moving.
Yay! Somebody finally picked up my idea koo well
lets see which rom is the best
This should be reset tho every like week or so, cause constant changes happen and one gets crazy awesome over night..so you should have in the title sometimes (I reset this poll on 1/27) so ppl no to see new results...
wrong info
I use [email protected] Eclair 2.1, with spanish kernel, this is the faster 2.1 ROM for Dream and Sapphire.
I´m waiting for a new update, with N1 features and G1 Dream full working.
http://www.htcmania.com/showthread.php?t=90749
Nice Idea, this poll.
But, i think, there should be also a Poll for the Functions needed, not only which Eclair ROM...
So, for me the Killerfeatures are:
WLan/WiFi working
Bluetooth working
Exchange Active Sync working (including Contacts, Calendar, E-Mail)
Sound working (also with Navigation App like Sygic, nDrive, ...)
Not so urgent, but would be nice:
Google Sync working
Tethering WiFi/USB working
Browser with Flash Support working
Camera working (Pictures & Video)
Video working
as much as possible free system memory ;-)
Of course my respect for all developers, you do great work!
I'll try ~ all Imagereleases, but i stay at the moment @The Original Rogers (modification from kb7sqi). I think it's the only one with working complete ActiveSync/BT/WiFi/Sound.

I like your idea, it's good to always update ratings based upon how certain ROMs enhance faster or more frequent than others.
hey javolin i really think u should add jubeh's 2.1 AOSP ROM to the polls, its really something great, best eclair ROM i used to date.
the Intention ROM comes from a mature dev that doesnt act like a child. He also dosent beg for money
Ill be trying kingklick's rom next!
I don't like eclair roms anymore after I tried CSDIv1 lol....everything seems to be slow as a turtle xD

I would like to add different ROMs to the list, I don't think I can edit the poll once it's posted though.
pretty good turnout with the voting... I think these voting ratings will also help devs in a comptetive state as well... Granted there is the "sharing is caring" attitude, but I'm sure nothing feels greater then having a large fan base that supports your rom

[Q] Subforums for Sense/Stock builds in the Dev section ?

As it appears people clearly like or dont like HTC Sense, would it be possibly to add these options to the dev forums, its getting really confusing trying to follow/ find anything with the page's updating every second and the random names dev's use to tag there builds

Nope but obviously someone needs help on learning on how to throw together a witty non valid comment... it's a simple suggestion on cleaning up the forums to make them more user friendly, now, back under your rock troll...
I was going to suggest something similar too.Another thought was to not have so much discriptions on the headings, maybe just the basics of what is there. Then more detailed info when the thread is opened, maybe.I find it pretty confusing the differentiate between some of the builds.
I'm almost changing on a two daily basis my android roms and am very grateful for all the hard work being put into this so keep up the good work and thanks
I have to say its rather easy for me to figure out what type of build it is.
maybe its just me. Usually there is something in the header that tips me off.

I hope you see the difference between me (troll) and you. Check the titles, waste some more time to install all the builds and you will find which developer and what build is what with what.
Thank you!
Your correct, Titles tell us everything
[BUILD]Mdeejay FroYo HD v.3.3 beta|1.24.405.1|kernel: hastarin r 7.1
must therefore be a Stock build.... oh wait, its Sense.
I could list various titles for hours with the amount of releases there is on a weekly basis, see what im getting at here ?
The suggestion I made has nothing to do with testing builds, what developer to use, or any other of the random questions about builds that are flooding the forums, its about a creating a simple sub forum so the two variations of releases can be easily distinguished and found by the user looking for it, and probably give a little leeway to the dev's from the constant requests they get to do a alternative build with/without sense, simple organisation allowing less clutter and less load on the xda servers search function.
No need subforums for Sense/Stock, Stock build is dying, in a few days you won't able to find any stock build in the first few pages, there are will be Sense and EVIL Sense...

Isn't HD in the title as Rom from Desire HD?
Plus most developers if not all put some screen shots at the end of their first post.
And we are talking for how many android roms in total? 10? Thats nothing compared to WM roms and GTX themed or Max-Sense. Needless to say the mess with the builds for 6.5 and 6.5.x builds. As soon as people get acquainted with what they have its fine.

Best rom for my epic 4g?

Hey guys, hoping you guys can give some insight to a noob on this. I am looking to install a good rom on my phone. I'm leaning how to do this, but what I am looking for is speed and functionality. Themes are not that important, but would be cool. I do have the DK28 and is rooted, so I might need a good video to show me how to rom this phone properly. But as far as rom's go, I'm looking for one that is a really good rom.
Thanks in advance
Mike
Welcome to Rooting your phone. As far as the best ROM? There is no one best ROM, everyone has a different preference and outlook on speed. Any of the latest EXT4 ROMs will probably suit you though. Here is a link that will help you pretty much with everything you need:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SPH-D700
They have guides on how to ROOT, ROM, THEME and other things. It has the links to kernels, roms, themes all there. Hope that helps, and good luck.

Cool thanks. Are there any video's that show how these are installed? I saw some on youtube, but they were not that great of quality, and was unable to really get a good view of how to do it.
Thanks again

These videos don't show how they are installed but give a nice overview of some of the most popular current roms. I found them really useful.

The fun part is thanks to nandroid backups you can try out a ton of roms (I flash a new one every couple of days, now I'm back at dl18 playing the waiting game)
From what i've seen most roms share all of the major fixes and use similar tweaks and optimizations that they borrow from other devs... and the only notable difference i've seen between them is theme and how much they include in the rom extras wise (apps, live wallpapers, etc).
Viper rom has a lot of updates but I wasnt too much of a fan of the overall look of it
Mammons bonsai rom is lovely and I <3 it
Midnight Rom is excellent too and one of the best themes in my opinion, though if i remember correctly he does away with Twiz launcher and uses launcher pro(could be mistaken though i'm really tired and have used too many roms)
Epic Experience was the first rom that I flashed and works great, but I was mainly playing with the others lately since they have more frequent updates
Quantum Rom - daemon is brilliant and am looking forward to his next release
Supernova - I did try it out but I honestly don't remember what features it had
Nebula - Tried this out too, supposed to be more stable/straight forward rom for stable professional people who dont want inflated quadrant scores or flashy live wallpapers (I might be quoting a different rom, if so i apologize)
Syndicate Rom - Awesome as well but its not for dk28 xD
Overall all the roms are amazing the only differences REALLY notable to me is that some use AOSP lockscreen by default, some use TWiz lock/launcher, some use ADW... launcher pro... but all of that is changeable with a flashable zip/apk...I tend to prefer mammon and quantum rom nowadays since iirc mammon made the call log fix and gps fix and daemon is doing all this ext4/cwm work and they seem to be leading up the race with innovation and knowledge (not saying others arent knowledgeable... i know nothing of developing i'm just guessing here)
EDIT: forgot to mention, only reason im not on dk28 right now is that personally I have minor bugs with it such as the one where you call somebody and it doesnt ring or make any sound but it actually calls them, and some other minor issues. I figured i'd wait for official froyo to drop and continue testing out roms when I get bored
Oh and theres also cyanogen mod which is sexy and amazing but is prebeta and buggy (signal bars not working, MMS is broken, etc)
Although I agree that he could have been nicer about it, these posts absolutely do not belong in the development forum. Questions about "which rom is best for me?" Definitely belong in general. The reason some people (myself included) aren't often very nice about it is becase it is increasingly becoming a problem. The op really should take the time to read the stickies before cluttering up the dev forum. Everyone should.
Also, calling someone a jackass- even if they are being one- almost never shows them the error of their ways.

It is best to get titanium backup (from the market) that way u can back up your apps and you can use Backup to Gmail (also from the market) to backup contacts, call log, and messages. That makes flashing different roms a lot easier. (In my opinion)

Aside from titanium (which i never really used much, guess I should try it out as it can make backups every night while you sleep if you set it to)
You can also make a NANDroid backup via rom manager//clockwork mod which when you restore will restore everything down to cache to be the same. same texts in your inbox even xD.
EDIT: Also if you have your phone linked to a google account when you go through the setup wizard (on some roms) it auto downloads the apps you had installed before from the market as well as contacts, etc. But if you want an instant restore to the same settings/wifi/etc then I prefer nandroid (idk if titanium does all that I think it just backups apps)
also note that along with most roms you can customize them to your liking. you can change the boot animations (given they use a kernel that allows it... if the rom has a custom boot animation already it'd work by flashign one in CWM), theme, battery look, keyboard, launch options, lockscreen. You could always just get a not-flashy basic rom that incorporates the basic fixes that people want (faster gps lock/5mb mms/call log fix) and theme it all yourself in the themes and apps subforum. The gingerbread theme is nice and nova has a list of boot animations and battery mods in his supernova rom page :3. If you're interested in that I'd say go for epic experience as I'm partial to it and he includes an "extras" page with downloads to all that hes removed such as the live wallpapers, samsung widgets, etc.

ROM Reviews

So, basicly, I wanted to try all available ROMs for Buzz and write a short/long review about it and give it a rating 1-5 stars. That should prevent lots of questions and should be helpful to newbies. What do you think? Write a comment/PM me.

If you ask me, I would suggest everyone not to compare and rate different roms. It is not like one rom is better than the other. Roms will be according to the needs. Some roms aim at performance tweaks while some aim at display effects. And there will be some people who cannot live without sense widgets. Sense roms will be the option for them. So I think comparisons cannot be made.
And I think that number of topics (by newbies asking what is the best rom) on roms will outreach the number of roms. But if you start something like this what happens is there will be differences in opinions. Some may give worst opinions just after using it for few hours [ LOL, they don't even think about the time taken to develop a rom]. Because users will get pissed off even when everything is fine but just little bugs in the couple of features they need. I think there will be people who shift roms because of little things like dialer app etc. So basically the standard will be missing because everyone likes a rom which satisfies his needs ( and obviously everyone's needs will not be the same ).
But I think you can give feedback to xda in general section about controlling spam.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
Yeah, I wanted to review it by stock settings, just for people to see what do they get by flashing it and to see if it has potential of fulfilling their needs. Means no modding or installing additional apps by me during/before the review. I think it's easyer to read an article about a ROM and to see some *in use* screenshots than self flashing every ROM (pain in the a**).

Agree 100%, except for this observation: an dialer, on a phone, is not just one little thing!
Well, I dont want to be a troll, it doesn't matter at all, your opinions are correct.
If you dont know how to start, or what rom to try at first, start reading! There is a list of rom topics on dev section, topic "the complete wildfire index". Try to enter each rom topic, see when was the last rom update, see the principal features of the rom, and read some feedback from users, searching for bugs.
I like to use the numbers of comment pages on the topic as reference of how many users have that rom, also, but pay atention on the age of the topic and, of course, if a lot of that replies are not bug related.
Again the choice of a rom is very personal, but this are parameters that I used to start tests.

Again the choice of a rom is very personal, but this are parameters that I used to start tests.

yeah, sure, i dont have problems with choosing roms, i read, but, majority of people just post a thread asking which rom to choose.. thats where reviews come in, u know, every dev will talk best about his rom and etc, but this is "for users, by users"
and like bharat said its controlling spam
its not a bad idea. i have tried every rom for wildfire and i have to say that the cm7 nightlies is the most stable 2.3.4 for wildfire. enough said

Ultimate Rom Requirement specification thread

Hello Guys,
This is my first post on XDA forum because I'm new here. I didn't post any threads till now because I didn't want to spam the forum with any unwanted thread or duplicate ones, but I have tried many Roms and I already knew some really cool and helpful guys like Jader, Mechmetal and Bestttt :fingers-crossed:
I used to work as a software engineer, but currently i'm working as a software quality control engineer.
and as I said earlier I have tried many Roms and I also have found lots of bugs and enhancements required.
I wanted to post comments but sadly I'm not allowed to because terms and conditions stated that I can't comment unless I post at least 10 threads :crying:
Anyway, I just wanted to suggest something,
I suggest organizing a thread for something like a requirement sheet for each Rom, speaking about myself I installed lots of roms but I removed it again because it has less customizations , or it doesn't have a built in application that I really want or it has another one I don't like (ex: toggles) while it had been a fast and stable one.
so why don't we find a way to collect the requirements of the users installing JB Roms, and ICS roms so the developers can put their effort in two really cool and helpful roms to have most of our needs:good:
It was just a suggestion
I'm have Xperia Arc [lt15i] with AOKP M1 - Fusion Kernel 3.9
Given how many ROMs there are, along with the fact that everyone's different this is a fruitless task, and why I learned to mod myself. You also can't expect Devs/Themers to cater for every last persons requirements.

Yes, Sure I get what you mean, it's so exhaustive
I meant something like Bug reporting technique, issues or enhancements with priorities and severity.
Anyways it was just a suggestion
Thanks anyway

Which are always good, but like I've said we're all different and what you may like in a ROM I might not so what you might call a "requirement" I might call a gimmick.
Also, you don't need to start 10 threads to post in Development, you just need to make 10, preferably helpful posts elsewhere.

I didn't start 10 threads to post in the Development section, I downloaded and tried most of the Roms in the development section,
The number of posts near my name are just replies
plus, my posts in the development sections are not requests , so I could still use it normally since I registered on XDA without the need to comment
Thanks anyway it was just an Idea that I thought about and I just wanted to share.
I have tested many JB Based Roms/ Kernels if you have created modded one where WiFi / WiFi Tethering is Stable and working I would be much obliged of having and Using it on my phone ... The best Rom / Kernel I have tried so far has been LuPus V4 Kernel with CAMPS Rom but unfortunately like all the rest WiFi Tethering has been insignificant and unusable Where as I have to constantly downgrade back to JellySandwich / Ark Knight Combo (ICS) Untill there's been a fix ... So There's are my 2 needs hope that helps with your conquest in making a Universal Rom
Mod ur own rom and rule the world because no developer will ever work to create a rom as per ur convince

xda devs mate already organized the threads.. also we got good moderators... this is a free forum.. you need to earn the recognized developr to gain the reputation.. or other title.. theres no instant here... show off your works and get recognized.
if you can fix some bugs.. you can contribute in developing the roms.. btw welcome...
