Does anyone know if this will actually have 1GB of ram or it will have twice the galaxy s "512" MB of ram that ended up closer to 300-350 usable
800 MB is available according to this preview of a SGS2 prototype.
http://mobile-review.com/review/samsung-galaxy-s2-en.shtml
so again when they say 1GB they don't really mean it.
I hated it when i got the galaxy s that they said 512 but only 325 showed up,
how can the nexus one have 576MB of ram and show it but the sgs/II cant.
All OS'es use some RAM.
That's why the user/applications can't use all RAM.
And some RAM may be reserved for the GPU.
but iits not like we bot up the phone and it will have 800mb free the os will take some of that ram anyway so why hide it away.
Newer versions of the OS may need more or less RAM when new features are added
or when it is more optimized.
So it's not possible to specify the exact amount of RAM available.
And highest possible number is usually used in specifications since it looks more
impressive.
The phone has 1Gb of RAM, but it seems that the OS (Android) is taking 200Mb, so there is around 800Mb free RAM available to the user.
It the same with PCs. When you buy a new PC, for example we say that it has 4Gb of RAM, but you will be able to use only 3Gb, because the OS (like Windows) take 1Gb for its purposes.
I hope you can understand what I mean.
It might be also different for the Tegra 2 version. Somewhere I remember reading that the Tegra chip reserves 250MB, although I might be wrong with the actual number, it definitely takes a cut.

Yeah, I've read that too. I think it was connected to the GPU, which was reserving some of the RAM, as Graphics memory. But I could be wrong.
Both of you are right. Tegra2 is reserving 128MB of RAM, so its not useable by the OS. Android itself also need about 200MB of RAM. So in the end you have about 200MB of free RAM that you can use for other apps.
And i am pretty sure Exynos is doing the same. Its probably reserving RAM for the GPU, my guess its the same as Tegra2 128MB. Android is taking another 200MB. So the user is left with about 700MB RAM, which is more then enough.

so the gpu in the sgs II is integrated and shares the phones ram as vram? like cheap integrated graphics in computers.
Ok that makes more sense than.

I don't know what you were talking about ram disappearing. I run win 7 with 6GB of ram win7 take 1.5-2GB of ram most of the time but that doesn't mean that my ram shows up as 4.5-4GB total.

800 MB is available according to the preview I linked to in a previous post in this thread.
The SGS had 512 MB, but the user got about 150-250 to use.
You can NOT double both numbers and claim that's what the SGS 2 will have. Because then you are stating that the OS will use twice as much RAM.
So if you think about it, you are probably looking at ~750 usable and ~200 for the OS.
A conservative estimate would be at least 500 MB of free RAM.
Captivate, XDA Premium, Cyanogenmod
Even if the system takes 200mb of the precious ram, leaving 800 left, come on, isn't that enough left for whatever users want to do? It doesn't pose as a threat to users, atleast for now. In a way it is even over kill.
Right now, the only time my hd2 has ever "used" up its ram is when i'm watching a flash video or playing mega jump. However both only occur when i'm using a sense hd/z build which only offer me, at max, 180 mb ram.
So in all i'm saying 800mb is more than satisfactory for users.

You are not getting the point. You are not getting the difference between whether the OS is disclosing the reserved OS ram or not when giving you the number.

More RAM = less paging/caching = less garbage collection = more battery life
800+ MB is great to see. Whether you think you use all your RAM or not, you probably do at times. Some Android apps will stay running in the background so they are already loaded when you go back, which means more memory, less apps having to close when memory is needed.
The best example I had for the SGS's 512 MB being too little was playing poker and running a timer for the blinds, and trying to watch sporting events like the hockey game on my phone at the same time. My timer kept getting killed because the browser needed so much memory for Flash. More memory will be very welcome!

It is advertise as having 1024MB RAM. I feel that is false advertising when it really came with only 800MB. Even rounded up, that is a big different.
I think its the "drivers" that take up the missing 200mb! Hardcore Rom cookers can slim down the drivers giving a few extra MBs! Not any here Yet!
It has 1024mb, but because the kernel and os need to use some, not all of it is available for your apps.

yea, that seems to be the likely explanation. and I'm running 2.3.5 currently, and usually its using 400 to 500 at any given time, with only the browser and maybe one app running. any suggestions as to what can be forced closed or disabled to increase RAM available?
You will need root to get rid of system apps and most pre-installed apps. You can use Titanium Backup to "freeze" any apps and widgets you don't use (also requires a rooted device). As for which apps to freeze, look at what's running on your device with an app manager like SystemPanel Lite, and decide what you don't need from that list.
LOL
Some memory is shared with GPU

Its like that for every device, much of ram goes into graphics and android os other ram that u always see full in that 800 mb are the system apps.
Yup, and i imagine TW is using a lot of it too. For comparison when i run MIUI on my Desire HD (with 768MB RAM) i have around 400MB when i boot it up. With Sense it only got around 160MB left.
But again, don't worry about it! Android handles it.

Which is the exact same purpose of more RAM on a desktop... either more applications or heavier applications. Since the latter don't exist for mobiles, it's the former. Wth did you think it was for, making it shiny?
Protip tough: Go Launcher Ex has a "close all running applications" on it's app drawer. Sometimes, depending on how long I've gone without doing this (on my Atrix) it goes from 180 free MB to over 500 free MB (which is the maximum free you get considering the 800 total for Apps).

Um! Multitasking is silly?
Ok, do it the hard way.
So this discussion again... every single android device gets this.
The RAM that you "can't see" is used by system apps, drivers and the kernel.
1gb is plenty even with some RAM used already. By default Android never closes apps but instead keeps them open in the background thus "eating" RAM to enable faster multitasking. Rarely will you face a situation when the used memory gets too low, and in most cases Android takes care of that by shutting down less important and unused apps itself. If you for some reason have a fetish to see all the RAM unused and available, then you either:
a) Are a PC gamer (Android doesn't have games heavy enough to eat up tons of memory)
or
b) You don't understand how Android works.
Everyone should understand the one main principle of android:
unused RAM is wasted RAM. There is no point having 1gb, 2gb or 16gb of RAM if it isn't used. And like someone earlier said, the two uses for RAM in Android devices are either multiple applications or heavy applications. There are no heavy enough apps to eat 1gb of RAM, so the amount of applications is what affects the available memory. If you close every app from any task manager etc. then you are in principle destroying the multitasking abilities of Android.
And if you want to shut down apps that eat battery or stop the phone from going to sleep, then I strongly suggest uninstalling those apps instead. Apps that do this when they aren't active are badly coded and should not be used.
The problem with uninstalling those apps is that, sometimes, they're quite unique in function, being unreplaceable. GDocs is an example of a battery hog, and it's substitutes are office applications that cost well over 10US$ and not everyone needs.
But yes, the OS should take care ofmost memory managing issues.
All I would like to know is that what is the actual available ram of gs3 because they advertise it 1 GB but it turns out to be always less for example Galaxy S 2 has 830 MB out of 1GB, Galaxy Nexus has 690 MB out of 1GB, Galaxy S 1 had 329 MB out of 512 MB and only HTC One X has actual 0.98 GB Ram/ 1GB. So my question is does anyone know? All one has to do check is long press the home button then select the task manager and select ram to see what the total available user ram is.

780 mb out of 1 gb will be available for usage. the remaining is utilized for internal hardware most probably the graphics.
There is always 1GB of RAM. But you have many background tasks/applications running which will consume some of that. The OS would also take some of that. It's totally obvious. Phone vendors never say that you will get 1GB of free RAM. They will provide you 1GB RAM, how much is free depends on lot of factors.
Answer to your question is 779MB.
@ rd_nest
here the background apps/tasks comes within the available 779 mb, so in a stock s3 we will be having a free memory of around 250 to 400 mb
Whut?

yes, but still you may see a custom kernel in near future which can increase the total memory by reducing the shared graphics memory.

Why? Both of us are running stock. I haven't installed or did anything with my HOX.
The only difference between our HOX is that mine takes into account of the Sense RAM tackes and doesn't report all if it as potential free space and the international version just consumes it and reports that you potentially have .9 gb free which is kind of a lie.

The OS itself might be using a portion of it that's not visible, however, I always have around 600MB+ in-use, even with bare Stock and AOSP... so I doubt this.
It probably is the OS and kernel using up a chunk. Android 4.2 is pretty heavy.
Android also caches stuff in RAM that isnt even open, even right at boot. This is to help open those apps faster, but if something else needs that cached memory space then Android automatically drops the app in cache and uses it for whatever is needed.
Remember, unused RAM is wasted RAM. Looks to me like you have 600MB of waste
Part of the 2GB DRAM is probably also shared with video memory and since the resolution is so high it's a big chunk.

Multiuser doesn't have any effect; I've had about 1.6GB memory available on all custom ROM's and Kernels I've tried. The fact that the Nexus 4 displays all 2GB usable though does still raise the question as to why about 400MB is missing on the Nexus 10.

This might be a possibility; but I think at this point the Kernel source might be a good place to start digging for proof of whether this is happening or not.
Some GPUs have dedicated memory and it does not share from the system RAM, our GPU shares and thus it takes a chunk of what we have available.
If it makes you feel any better on my GSIII with CM10 its a 2GB device says 1630MB is available. Sounds normal with the N10 mine is the same
The ram measurement on Android has never shown as 100% empty (I think my Nexus One had 276MB free). Same as a Desktop/Laptop, it would only be 100% unused if there were no Kernel or libraries loaded.
I'm by no means an expert on this, but I dug into android memory management quite a bit when trying to optimize Shadowgun Deadzone performance. I don't think any of the apps measure memory used by native code. There's an adb command that will show you native memory use for an app, but I never dug that far into it. Again, I'm not a developer, but I assume your missing memory is being used by used by the parts android running native code. What's not clear to me is how android handles how much native memory an app can use. I got over my gaming fixation, but I'm still curious about this. If anyone can shed some light on this, I'd love to hear it.

I've checked /proc/meminfo and it looks like even the kernel doesn't see the full 2GB (assuming it is really there). MemTotal is 1,686,380 kB. Even if they were using 2GB==2,000,000,000 B, it's still missing over 150MB. I'd really like to know what is going on, but even Google support is completely clueless.
I'll probably just return it for something that lets me use the amount of RAM advertised.
May be video ram is shared with main memory ?
About 160MB is taken by Android OS (kernel + necessary libraries). It's reserved only for the OS, so it's unavailable for the user. It's common for all Android devices I've had.
For example my i9001 (SGS+) has also missing ~160MB of RAM (should have 512MB, but has only ~350MB available for apps.
If the video memory is shared at the hardware level, the number would make sense. What irks me is that I don't see that mentioned anywhere even on 'techie' blogs/reviews and even Google support doesn't know this about their device.
From what I understand, unless the kernel was modified to report less memory than is really available, meminfo should report the full amount accurately.
I don't even get 1.6 GB of ram

thats seems to be a normal thing for 4.2.2
As an owner of a previous tablet, my Acer Iconia a500 reported (in 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 4.0, 4.1, and 4.2) that it only had 725MB of RAM (it shipped with 1GB). My guess is that the missing chunk is graphics memory. I also show 1.6GB of RAM in my Nexus 10.
prior to 4.2.2, the GPU had 400-some MB reserved. At 4.2.2, there is almost an extra 400MB (386MB I think to be exact) reserved for the GPU, so 2GB - 800MB = 1.2GB
The extra GPU memory is to prevent userspace fragmentation if I read right.
Awesome. Thanks for the explanation. I just noticed that after the CyanogenMod 4.2.2 patch, mine dropped as well. Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich must've reserved around 256MB of memory.

Pre-4.2.2, out of the 2GB, 400MB was reserved for the GPU. 4.2.2 gives an additional 380 or so MB to the GPU (totaling close to 800MB reserved for the GPU) in order to prevent userspace RAM fragmentation.

What does userspace RAM fragmentation mean? Sorry for being noob...

Basically it means when the gpu needs more it doesnt take away from userland aka launcher apps etc. Instead they reserved an extra 400mb for the gpu to help with performance on the crazy hifh resolution

Well, **** I think that they should have let it take away RAM from the user, I keep like 15 tabs open at all times and only having 1.2gigs free causes the browser to run out of memory and crash.

Weird, Android should keep all tabs open and reload them if you want to see them. My phone does exactly that.

15 tabs open is considered excessive on a laptop and low end desktops. Let alone a tablet. As is the case though when it was allowed to rob from the userspace RAM is it was fragmenting it.. Which in a lot of cases probably left you with less usable RAM then you get now.
Fragmented RAM = There is free RAM but because it isnt a contiguous block the OS can't use it. It's sits there completely wasted until x-y-z happens.
Two great pictures showing what fragmented memory is and why it's a problem. These are about Netware servers but the same principles apply.. Fragmentation = Bad and a waste of space.
External Fragmentation
Internal Fragmentation

I usually keep at least 25 tabs open in my first gen i5 laptop without problems (I have 6gbs of RAM though).
And damn that sucks, but would the the unusable RAM ever reach 400mbs?

That I can't answer.. I just would be illogically guessing at that point.
Yeah, extra RAM helps on the PC end of things with browser tabs.. It can start bogging down on the CPU though with ads, flash, and scripts running. My ADD can't deal with more then 4 tabs at once.. I'd go nuts with 25.
I would also suggest a lighterweight browser. I use lightning browser mostly. And chrome beta only when a page doesn't render something properly in lightning.

Hi folks!
pretty new to the forum and for now I am not knowing much about the android. But here got some basic question that hinders my daily use of my cellphone:
The device I am using is samsung Galaxy S 5, and the model is G9008v, for those you know is the version with the China Mobile carrier.
SO, the ram is claimed to be 2GB, right?
bUT WHEN I am using it, the available ram is only about the 300mbs....
Here I've attached the ram status so that I could get some help. As you could see here only THREE programs ar erunning but the total ram is 1.6GB and there are 1.3 GB taken, For no use?

Free RAM is 300MB (Which will change depending on usage)
Actually installed RAM is 2GB
Some is reserved for GPU so will only show about 1.7GB~

Thank you Detection!
e well no, actually the thing I am concerned about is the abnormity of the ram taken.
Only three programs are running as shown in the picture and they took like 300mbs adding up, however where is my other like 1.3 GB ram..?

There is no image in your post
The System uses the rest of the RAM, Android is a RAM hog
With nothing else running, I get about 600MB free
Check your PC task manager, with no programs running, Windows uses about 1.5GB RAM, similar reason with Android

2 GB ram is not enough, android system itself eats more than 1 GB sometimes
so the solution i use is
If u want more ram, then use XtreStoLite 2.2 rom, which is extremely lightweight, i managed to free up ram upto 1.2 GB (Wow), tweaking like Freezeing, greenify etc. now Free Ram is ALWAYS more than .90GB when not using any app, even after hours of use
only downside is that, its 5.0 lollipop not 5.1
but for me Multi tasking is more important to me than android version
Good Luck
