Well, that was a fun ride, but Motorola seems pretty firm in their decision to lock down MY phone, so they can have it back.

Now I really can't decide if I want his phone or not...:S

Sad to see you go my friend.
I think I'll still get it and if I don't like it or if I want custom kernels, etc.. I'll sell it for 750$ here in Hungary .
Wow, these are bad news ...
Well, that's a real bummer DG. After all your hard work on the Captivate, I was looking forward to a Motorola with all of your enhancements.
Maybe you should stick with the Captivate until another dual-core hits at&t?
I think a LOT of people got the phone they helped you buy. not everyone is going to go out and return theirs. This is a sad sad thing. not even two weeks after it is out. Hopefully you can be convinced to keep this one and get another.
I was looking forward for your roms. Will you still develop for atrix?

This has put a bit of a damper on my Saturday morning, haha.
I haven't been blown away by the Atrix, but I'm holding out for a while because it seems to have so much potential. If Motorola ever reverses their stance on bootloaders and they roll out Gingerbread relatively quickly, that is...
Sad to see you go DG, but I'll keep rockin' Adeo for the time being.
Much sadness, DG was my one hope for the Atrix as there doesn't seem to be a whole lot else going on. Guess it's time to take it back for the Inspire...

I would think, with that many smart people on this forum, it is only going to be a matter of time until the bootloader is unlocked. Bootloader was felt to be uncrackable on the G2, but it got unlocked in the end and now I am rocking CM Roms on it. Seriously considering though to make the switch to the Atrix.

well that's kind of a pisser.
i basically bought this phone because dg was backing it. It hasn't even arrived yet
i guess i will have to like stock and a custom launcher. People, the bootloader WON'T BE UNLOCKED unless motorola wants to.
Sadly, there isn't another dual core android phone on at&t. So my guess it DG stick with the captivate until either LG or the galaxy S II arrives. The inspire's battery is just too crappy to get that one
EDIT: would someone post this on the motorola forums? (i don't have the phone with me yet) Motorola needs to see that there are people that won't buy their phones because they are locked. I know we are in the minority, but i want to know how big or small this minority is.

Sadly there isnt another dual core phone at all. The phone out of the box is pretty good IMO. Sucks were losing DG. Well see some development when its released on other carriers and when the international version is released. Most of the galaxy s dev came from international development. It will get better

Sorry to see you go. I am almost in the same boat, but when I really look at it I have ADW ex launcher and the phone meets all of my requirements. I know I will have to wait for AT&T to get their **** together to fix the Data speeds, and Motorola said they will support 2.3. When it actually does happen, this phone will exceed my expectations.
I am in the same boat I think.
It has been fun hacking this phone... I however, am tempted to say fooey, and go with what my first instinct said, and get a trusty HTC.
Motorola, You can have your phone back.

Exactly, people did help and donate to DG to get the ATRIX, not some other phone... and really, theres no other phone to get thats out right now, especially on AT&T. Inspire already has a huge development backing, since its basically the Desire HD.
I enjoyed your work on the Captivate, but that phone is a lot worse than the Atrix due to specific hardware problems and such.
I agree, its a shame that Motorola locked this phone down; there would be limitless potential with its power and webtop capabilities. But you did ask for donation to specifically buy the Atrix; in which a lot of people donated and then went to buy the Atrix also. Somewhat a betrayal...

I'm an EVO guy so I thought I'd ask here as well. My brother is on Verizon and looking to get either a fascinate or the X. He asked me which I thought. So I popped into their development forums to have a peek.
There doesnt seem to be much at all for either verizon phone in the way of ROM's. Am I correct in assumng that the EVO community is just so much more badass? He likes the things I show him with my phone and wants to be able to do something similar.
Is there another phone, forum, or something I'm missing that could help me get some better info as to what to recommend to him? Or if anyone here has a little Verizon experience they can share with me. Thanks for any info at all!

HTC phones have always gotten way more support. For example, the Incredible on Verizon probably gets as much support as the EVO.
As for the two you mentioned, the Droid X, as far as I know, still hasn't gotten cracked. You can root it but can't flash custom ROMs. The Fascinate I don't know much about. Cyanogen Mod is being ported to some Galaxy S phones but I'm not sure if that includes the Verizon one. Either way, Samsung dev support is always slower.
Edit: If he can wait, there's a Verizon branded G2/HTC Desire Z coming out soon (?). There's also rumors of a Motorola "super phone" that will ship with a dual core Tegra 2 by hopefully holiday season (or if not, Q1 2011).
Nice that you mention the Incredible, he currently has that so we're gonna root that and play with it for awhile see if he can hold off getting another phone till the next big thing comes out.
Thanks.
If he's going to get a phone right now, then one of the Droids, preferrably the Incredible. Droid X is 2nd, and Fascinate is last. Why? It's a Bingphone. Like the Kin, which died after just a few weeks. That's right, al of the Google apps have been removed and replaced by Bing apps, and the Google stuff on the Market are practically hidden.
If he has the incredible why does he want another phone? Like stated above, incredible gets almost the same amount of support the evo does.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
if he already has the Droid incredible he has no business getting a new phone. awesome dev community and still in the top tier of hardware. its pretty much a mini evo without 4g and hdmi.
in the coming months you will start to see phones that may actually be substantially better than the DINC, but nothing atm. i would hold on the the DINC for at least a year.
Stick with the incredible until the next HTC phone or something better is released.
Sent from my HTC Evo 4G using XDA app.
I think just because the fact that he's had the incredible so long, he assumed it was time to get a new one. He doesnt keep a phone too long, and me not being on Verizon I didnt know there was so much support for the incredible. I'm going to recommend he just hold onto that for now.
I'm new here obviously. A Linux user about to buy my first Android phone, likely a Fascinate. The development work going on here is central to that decision, because I only want a Fascinate if it will eventually have custom Froyo ROM's. If I pull the trigger, I'm locked into a 2year contract with this phone.
My holdback concern is that the phone may never see its full potential due to Samsung's delay in releasing 2.2, and the draw new phones on the market, like the the Continuum, Droid Pro, Nexus S, etc. may have on the dev's currently working on the Fascinate. The development team here is small, but mighty, and really can't afford to lose many key players.
My question is, At what point will those dev's give up on the Samsung Fascinate? If Froyo doesn't release until, say, January, will there be anybody around to save us from TouchWiz and Bing, lol?
The Continuum and Nexus S will have virtually the same hardware as the Galaxy S series, so I don't really see a lot of "pull" there. Sure, people will develop for those phones as well, but this one will still be plenty popular for some time yet. Remember that the Nexus S is likely not going to be on Verizon, and not everybody will like the ticker screen concept. Oh, and I don't see the Droid Pro as a threat in the least. It's more of an entry level device for Blackberry addicts. Oh, and I don't think we'll have to wait until after the first of the year for Froyo. I could be wrong, of course, but with Samsung starting to roll it out overseas, it shouldn't be too much longer.
One last thing. If you're concerned about contract lock in, just do what I did, which was renew with a 1 year contract, which actually allows you to upgrade every 10 months. I ordered my Fascinate exactly 10 months after buying my Eris (which was the day after the Fascinate was actually released; I smell a conspiracy), which I also got on a 1 year contract. The only catch is you pay $70 more for any phone on Verizon when choosing a 1 year renewal, so the phone would cost you $270 plus taxes. I would recommend buying it online from Verizon's website, to avoid the messy rebates.

Salivating for Froyo is the most common post I have seen since [recently] joining this forum. I bought mine from best buy's free phone Friday event, for $0, signing a 2 year contract for $30 extra a month was an easy decision. The only things this phone is missing are a front camera (which the sprint epic has in addition to a qwerty that makes the phone a lot thicker than this one) and a dual core processor (which the droid pro has). I'm addicted to the look of this super amoled screen myself. Another thing to be aware of is the phone can be a little sluggish in finding GPS satellites out of the box.
So it's all about what your concerns are. I think it is worth knowing what you are getting into. I happen to love this phone and wish I bought it earlier
If you are waiting for another phone, the HTC Icredible Pro / mecha popped up in rumors tonight, but isn't likely to be on shelves immediately (not even expected this year), and you'll have to wait for root.
The Fascinate has a lot going for it. Galaxy phones are apparently making a big splash in Japan. The previous (wonderfully written) post also pointed out the compatible nexus s and continuum hardware. The Fascinate is also easily routed and readily Clockwork modded, with several roms already available including debinged browsing and voodoo lagfix.
The point being, most of what people want from Froyo can already be modded on this phone. The people I have seen posting here at XDA are also quite wonderful and inspire a lot of confidence.
(One thing I am hoping to get out of Froyo that I have not found yet is a way to do wifi calls while using a bluetooth headset as an audio source)
EDIT: I recall reading pre-release data that said the Droid Pro was going to be a dual core. Phonescoop lists the Droid 2 Global and Droid Pro as having 1.2 and 1 GHz TI OMAPs. My info was totally wrong. I read it incorrectly, and should not have posted unchecked information like that -- thanks for catching me.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
The Droid Pro doesn't have a dual-core processor
Answer is simple if any dev trully wanted to work on the phone they could've. A stock 2.1 was no where to be seen. Fascinate is not popular enough sadly.
So I'm. Jumpin ship. I have a brand new in box...ready to sell fascinate.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Thanks for the info guys. I'm coming from Symbian on AT&T, so I'm going to miss Flash support until 2.2, but Verizon is a must have so Symbian is out. Re: Continuum, the ticker is nice but not worth the drop to 3.5"; dedicated camera button is a bigger pull. But the Fascinate is cheaper at $40 w/2year contract. A one year contract would be way better, but that's a big jump to $270 since I would have to buy from Verizon to get the 1year. Probably cheaper to pay the remaining ETF at 1 year, which I might do.
Original question still stands. As nice a ship as the Fascinate is, it will sink if the developers here jump off. I'm hesitant to come aboard if it looks like that might happen, and all the people jumping off are making me wonder.
Have you even looked in the development and themes forums? there is a lot of activity. There's even more that is just published directly to ROM Manager / IRC.

I did think about getting the one year contract too but finally decided against it. I would have to spend 270 now for the phone with a one year contract + about the same next year when I upgrade. So that's like 500+ out of my pocket. I can just buy a new phone next year with that money so its not like I'll save anything.
However the one year contract does give you the freedom to switch carriers.
Also, my logic applies only if you get the phone for free (BestBuy - free phone fridays, LetsTalk, etc.)
Just my 2 cents

Or, a simpler explanation is that nobody wants to waste time on 2.1 with 2.2 so close to release. I know I wouldn't if I was a dev. Tweaking the original Touchwiz ROM is relatively easy, so they're probably just playing around with it for right now. When we get a proper Froyo kernel and base ROM, then the real development will begin. There's probably more development on other US variants because they've been out longer. We're too close to the Froyo release to mess with Eclair very much anymore.

After receiving the fascinate on release day, I, along with all of you have been waiting patiently (ahem) for the Froyo drop. After watching these forums and trying to learn all I could, I tried every combination that has been modded or developed here to help satisfy the need for something better than stock. I wanted to thank all of you who have been working on different things to help make this phone better in the absence of OEM support. A lot of the things delivered did make the phone better, but I always kept having to load another work around to do something I was used to doing on my old droid 2. Today, after playing with a Droid X, I decided to go ahead and dump the fascinate in favor of the X. Perhaps a mistake, but for now, I don't think so....my empty anticipation has dissipated until I start wanting gingerbread on the X. From all of my hours of watching, reading and learning from you all, it seems like the support is just there from Moto and I've never felt that from Samsung. If things work out like they normally do for me, you should be getting Froyo tomorrow thanks to me getting rid of mine. This is my first post in XDA, as I usually spend my time searching and reading to learn from the experts and I wanted to take the chance to say thank you before I start spending my time in the droid threads.

I played with both the Fascinate and the Incredible while at best buy. The Fascinate just felt like a better phone to me when using both. I'm happy with my purchase. The Incredible is a great phone though, great dev community. Enjoy your phone!
The Incredible is a fantastic phone, with one fatal flaw: its absolutely terrible GPU. I had one after owning the Droid 1, right before the Fascinate came out, and while it was tempting to switch to the Fascinate in general once they announced its release date was inside my 30-day return period (better hardware specs all-around), the graphics performance was what absolutely cinched it.
I remember trying to run on the Incredible... I think it was Asphalt 5 (though this goes for plenty of other 3D-intensive games I can't specifically remember) and it was like playing a slideshow most of the time.
Meanwhile, the Droid 1, despite its almost half-speed CPU compared to the Incredible, was able to smoothly run any game I threw at it.

Same here, the incredible was an option, but it is basically a redone droid eris. While decently powerful the fascinate was the better choice, even with 2.1.

I totally respect your decision, but I imagine it will be one you regret. I think people forget that we have only been waiting for Froyo a little more than three months. The droid x waited this long also. Other phones have waited much longer for promised updates.

I second this. I got my Fascinate from Craigslist and will never again buy a phone on contract.
As far as Froyo, if the update is half-assed (Droid Eris style), I'll be installing a nice clean Froyo rom the friendly neighborhood developers again.
The Froyo upgrade for the Droid 1 was actually pretty amazing performance-wise, but that's neither here nor there.
And the Droid X took a bit over two months to get Froyo. We've already been waiting three and a half months.
So while the Fascinate is a great phone as-is, from an objective point of view, the upgrade wait is unjustified and I feel buyers have every right to be disappointed -- especially when the manufacturer just launched a phone running 2.3.
I think the incredible is just a tad more than a re done fascinate. That's a little bit of a understatement. The dev community is flying on that phone.
Edit: flacyn. You are exactly right. I will agree locked bootloader doesn't mean no support. Just no support from modders. And launching a gingerbread phone while your flagship line sits on eclair is dissapointing.

Just wondering if there is anything I should know? I have an Incredible and I know depending on your model number it's either AMOLED or SLCD. I have a fascinate and an incredible right now. The fascinate is better hardware wise. The only thing keeping me on the incredible is cyanogen.

Last I heard, the HTC Thunderbolt, an LTE phone, was going to be released later this month. I could be wrong though.

At the press conference today they mentioned that all of the ten new devices they showed will be available the first half of the year, and "some as early as March"... So we are probably looking at April-May-June for most LTE devices
Guys no need to get angry. The guy asked for an opinion on the fascinate. And I think he needs one from someone who came from an Iphone on ATT to Samsung Fascinate on Verizon. What can he learn about a phone from ONLY people who are stuck with it........... Nothing. I think a negative review helps alot.
The fascinate has good hardware. But ive always said that android lacks in the applications department. Plain and simple.
Be smart the IPHONE is getting released on February 3rd. Wait try them both out....Then decide for yourself. Whats good for one person isnt good for another.
Another negative point SAMSUNG has the worst reputation with updating there android phones. Just a thought.
Your opinion does not make fact.

However, his question was not about which overall phone he should get. Just if there were anything specific to know about within the Fascinate family.
As for your opinion, its just that, you're personal opinion that only fits you. You were used to an iPhone and the apps you had. You got a completely different product that you are less happy with because you probably can't find the same apps or ones that worked comparably to what you had. Does that mean its automatically inferior, no, we as humans are just habitual and dislike change.
As for hardware, yeah, the iPhone's front camera and Apple's specific image software to tip the scales for the iPhone4 over the Fascinate. However, the EVO 4G easily bests the iPhone4.
If he were to wait on a different phone, he should do as others said and keep the Incredible and wait until later this year when a slew of LTE phones drop that ALL destroy iPhone4 and probably 5 as it will not be 4G.
As for iOS vs Android, meh, personal opinion. I like Android better as a techy guy and love the better inclusion of Google products. Again, we humans are habitual and my short stints with friends iPhones really don't do much.
For me, I'll stick with a far more open option that is rapidly surpassing anything iDevice has offered. Plus, I can create my own apps for free and without having to buy a Mac.

It's not about anger or hostility.
If you don't like this phone, why don't you go bug those people on the iphone forums. It just makes very little sense for you to come here and talk trash.
Didnt mean to talk trash guys. Wasnt my intention.
Want vs Need
After having the Atrix for 3 month. After refreshing the dev section every half hour of the day. I have finally gotten over myself and asked, "do I really need it to be unlocked?
our atrix is a solid snappy longlasting device. When we already have something so nice in our pockets, I think we all should be proud/appreciate what we have and behappy.
If our hardworking devs do crack/bypass the bootloader, great.
If not. What we ownis great still. Better than most of the phones on the market.
So this means stop crying like little babies. Stop saying atrix suck. Stop making it sound like a bigger issue than it actrully is.
Appreciate what we have.
True dat.
Though gingerbread would be nice

Dear Tian105,
For many here, it isnt about having one of the better phones out there. It is either the best or nothing. Also, Motorola has a short history of support on non droid android phones. Please look at the Cliq as a reference, 18 months old and still on 1.5 in most areas. Umm really? Then they made the Cliq XT which has aged extremely poorly at the ride old age of 14 months old and is at 1.5 Cupcake everywhere. This could easily happen to the Atrix since Motorola seems to have forgotten us somewhere at the end of list of phones to get Gingerbread. I really like the hardware on this phone. However unlocking the bootloader to allow us to get to gingerbread which even my HTC Dream at the geriatric age of 30 months is still capable of running with an unlocked bootloader of course. I dont want to start an argument about this but it seems like Motorola must be run by a bunch of luddites which can be frustrating. The way I see it and I posted something similar in another forum. The free bootloader movement has been going on for a while now, and to make a somewhat biased (Ill admit it) comparison, HTC is Egypt, Motorola is Libya and of course Apple is North Korea.
Only reason I want the bootloader unlocked is because csipsimple and sipdroid still won't work correctly with the current firmware. Till then the phone is just a toy to me.
I agree awesome phone. Even if only one core of our dual core is being loaded still a fun phone with a lot of promise of doing sweet things in the future (e.g. gingerbread, unlocked bl maybe, actually using both cores lol)

Congratulations on moving to the final stage
I guess it's not just about the phone you've bought, is what you do with it. After all, it comes with Android, kinda extension of Linux, therefore it should (or maybe must) follow Linux' idea: FREEDOM.
Freedom to choose what you want and what you don't. Freedom to manipulate YOUR gadget to make it your own, yours exclusively. Freedom to not necessarily accept it the way you've bought, freedom to tweak it as hell as you want, or freedom to simply be happy with it.
Of course it is an awesome piece of hardware. Oh God it is! But this fact alone shouldn't make you feel content the way it came when you buyed it. As any other thing in life, you should always aim the best you can do. And this is what we do when we pursuit the possibility of improving it.
Man... this was almost an Atrix Statement XD

So... you're telling me theres a chance? YEAHHH!!!!/Dumb and Dumber
Ok I think I know which one I am on.
This phone is like buying a new computer that had first of its kind technology but only has Windows XP on it...Which by the way you can't change or upgrade. You could return it (or sell it after 30 days) but then what? Those options suck because you want the technology that you bought into.
So much is left on the table with smartphones software-wise, but none so much as the Atrix. And it's still one of the top 3 phones available. Those truths are what's so maddening about the Atrix. It's also why development (and a method to deal with the bootloader) are of great importance for this phone.
The hardware is only as good as the software that runs it. So without the latest version of Android and optimization, the Atrix will be a sad case of wasted hardware..and not worth keeping with the speed technology evolves in this market.
So yeah I disagree with the OP..Seems one of the most locked down devices ever needs dev'ing the most. Here's to Kholk or Tenfar saving our phones!
