Problem with playing video!Anyone else? - Desire HD General

So guys,I have tried playing some hd movies on my DHD with no success.Mostly I used 720p,but also tried the native 480p.All the videos were encoded using H.264 mid-high profile with a size of about 1.8-2 gigs. These videos either don't play at all or play with severe lag, both on stock video player and rock player, making them unwatchable.
The strangest thing of all though is that said videos play super smooth on my "old" Desire ( ) and have awesome quality. The Desire doesn't seem to give a **** what I throw at it,it plays everything. What is wrong with the DHD?Does anyone have the same problem?Or does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
PS:Sorry for my english but it's almost 4 am here and I am really really tired!

i had the same issue, but i figured it out that DHD only plays several formats
such as:
.3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .wmv (Windows Media Video 9), .avi (MP4 ASP and MP3), .xvid (MP4 ASP and MP3)

Not the situation here!I think I even encode them with the same "specs" as the videos taken with the camera.Am I missing something here?

Are you using the same SD Card that you use on the Desire? (Are they the same movie files on the same SD Card?) If not I would recommend formatting the SD Card as a first step.

Same problem here. I tried several players like RockPlayer and VPlayer.
Videos are laggy and the sound is out of sync. Lags occur mostly on 720p MKV and MP4 files. I tried nearly every ROM and kernel out there, everytime the same results: laggy and out of sync.
Is there a fix for it?

Yeah,it's the very same card(put the DHD's 8GB card in the Desire ) with the same file.Maybe it's because I used to have an ext partition which I deleted and then expanded the FAT partition on the space left by the ext one.Cause I also have problems with files becoming corrupt. Will try that, thanks!

Problems playing .avi on my Touch HD

Hi I've just received my HD and overall I'm very impressed. I was a smartphone user previously so I’m having to come to terms with TouchFlo and Windows Mobile all at the same time!
The only real problem I’m having is playing .avi video. I've transferred an .avi file to my memory card but it won't play in CorePlayer (need the AC3 codec I think) and TCPMP doesn't load (get a crash screen) and mobile divx plays the video but it’s a mess on the screen.
I've even tried to encode the video file with PocketDivXEncoder but I think this needs TCPMP to play and it looks terrible in Mobile Divx.
So my question is how do I successfully play an .avi as this is one of the main reasons I bought my HD.
Also one further question with appointments in the calendar when I get a reminder the notification pop up doesn't appear till I click on the alarm icon at the top of the screen - is this due to touchflo and can you force WM6.1 to always show the notification - I’m finding I’m forgetting about meetings because of this!
Thanks in advance of your help.
JM
I've tried playing avi (divx) files with great success. I have been using CorePlayer (v1.2.5). Maybe you should try another video file? it should work
Interesting - are you using a special codec with that or just the player?

I now see your problem, I had originally tried only avi movies with mp3 audio (like most of my videos). I tested it with a file with AC3 audio and it appears that CorePlayer doesnt have that codec.
Guess your only option with movies with AC3 audio is to convert them, or you might be able to get an AC3 codec somewhere.
So is there a way of converting my video into avi + mp3 rather than AC3 as it sounds like that would sort my problem?

You could try the freeware video converter program 'SUPER'.
SUPER allows you to convert easily many aspects of a video including size, frame rate, format of video and audio, etc.
I use it all the time to convert my camera videos for use with my Hard Drive TV Media Player.
Don't try and download it from the developers web site it's a minefield in how to get the program.
Instead get it direct from Download.com here:-

I'm about to buy a Touch HD and was wondering if someone can confirm that it can playback video files (.avi) that can be found around the web (e.g. tv shows, movies and such) smoothly without conversion. (just transfer and play)?
yes please, can handle a typical rip of 350mb tv show or 700mb movie without problems?

It certainly can. I watched a whole divx movie i downloaded in full resolution (640 i think) without any conversion, and it was working great. havent tried a TV show yet but i guess it will work fine.

How did you manage that, mines plays the videos but they are jerky, seems like it's caching the film. I've even tried same file on iphone & hd, iphone was much smoother. what am i doing wrong??
Peter.
I've got to agree here with edwardscdr. I have no problem whatsoever in playing .avi files using Core Player 1.2.5
I believe the problem that others are having is down to what software and system associated files individuals have installed on their Phone. These could be effecting the performance of the playback.
It's a bit extreme but one sure way of finding out the problem is to hard reset the device and install ONLY Core Player (I personally did this when I first received my Touch HD).
Next transfer a video/movie file and play it........ Do you notice any improvements?
If so then at least you know it's down to what was previously installed.
To then eliminate the culprit that was causing the problem is to install software titles one-by-one and on each occasion check the playback of the video.
When it changes and no longer runs smoothly then BANG.... you have your culprit.
Beards
its the ac3, core player can't play it
i wish i can convert the audio via super...
sound can be changed, the audio codecs will show different results when using a different container, im just used to the .mp4 container so i didnt see an audio codec change to mp3
AC3 will play on the old TCPMP beta, the screen is buggy (missing buttons etc) but it does work. If you set up file extensions (in the options settings in both apps) to play on different media players you won't have any trouble (eg: AC3 plays on TCPMP, divx/xvid plays very well on Coreplayer).
The only videos i have trouble playing are in the H264 codec, but that's not a surprise as it is an advanced codec that can make some older desktops slow down.
As far as I am aware, the only media player that takes advantage of hardware acceleration is the built in media player with the HD. For optimum video playback you'd probably want to convert your video files with a third party app into mp4, BUT as an experienced heavy user of video files I find that a combo of Coreplayer, TCPMP and the built in player works just fine for nearly all occasions.
Hope this helps.
the videos are kinda bit pixelated also in tcpmp, the play buttons are center below but u cant see them until u click them ahha

avi player

exist an avi player for android?
i have done a search for this and have found nothing so far..
No. So far Android can't play regular AVI files. You need to convert videos if you want to watch them on your android phone.
Here's how to do it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=441063
AVI is just a container to hold compressed images, if the compressed images were H264 then decoding and displaying video would be straight forward. However, most of the AVI files I have are divx which the G1 can not decode due to the lack of suitable codecs.
Actually there is a player in the marketplace called android7 avi player...it plays avi from the root of the sdcard...what it does is the first time you hit play it takes a minute while it converts to the right avi format for the player..after that you have a new playable avi
it works perfectly with now problems?

does it convert everytime you try to watch that video file? or just ONCE?

when will we have a good video player for android which plays most common formats?????????
There's this "Yxflash" app from the Market which claims to play avi divx files. I tested it for myself, and it works, to an extent. Videos are extremely laggy so they're not pleasant to watch, but it does work.

I found an awesome app in marketplace called 'arcmedia'. Works a treat! I was using rockplayer...but this one is alot better.
I use ArcMedia player.. free in market. Seems to play anything. Plays AVI's that Double Twist and others wouldn't.
divx is nothing more than h.263. The hardware decoder on the device is FULLY capable of decoding these. The problem is that divx are douchebags, and instead of using the proper fourcc "h263", they replace it with one of "divx", "div3" or "div4".
If you want to play those files, you do NOT need to reencode them -- just need to FIX THE FOURCC!!! ffmpeg is capable of doing this -- the command would be "ffmpeg -i infile -acodec copy -vcodec copy -vtag H263 outfile"
** if you compile ffmpeg for armv5, your phone is plenty strong enough to handle this itself very easily!

I have used yxflash on my G1 and it works quite well. It looks like it drops some frames playing divx, but it's really not bad at all considering it was never designed to play divx encoded video.
Just a shame the battery life is getting really terrible on mine now. New battery 8 months ago and it's starting to go again. Waiting for the Desire Z now though, so not going to replace it.
rockplayer
rockplayer in market plays .avi
watching green hornet r5 on my nook color with Honeycomb as we speak.
Try QQ Movie player. It works for both my mp4 videos (with some considerate lag on my G1) and 3gp/avi/etc files.
Though Android is developed by the Open Handset Alliance, this smartphone platform only supports H.263, H.264 AVC, MPEG-4 SP and VP8 video format. Hence it is impossible to play AVI on Android phones.
in order to play avi, you can first convert it to android compatible video format

What video format does the nexus one read and where on the sdcard do we put them? Also what format does the camera output too when finished recording video?

Don't know about the first question, but the camera outputs 720x480. Try recording a video and checking your sd card to see the format.
it natively reads H.263 (encode and decode) MPEG-4 SP (encode and decode) H.264 AVC (decode), and no doubt reads many others with apps downloaded from the market. I beleive on the SD Card put them in a folder called "Video". Not sure about what the video output format is but I do know it is compatible with Youtube Uploading.

avi, mp4, not sure about wmv.
Just to test, I downloaded the 720P video of "Elephant's Dream" in MP4 format. . . AMAZING quality. :-D

Im using a Mac and will be using doubleTwist (Also on PC)
Because it syncs with my iTunes but you can just drop and drag videos and it will convert to the correct format you
It will even detect your device as a Nexus One
MP4 is simply an encapsulation method, many MP4s are just going to be incompatible. There are pretty fine settings needed to get it to work, but I believe you'll want to transcode movies to h.264 or h.263 for video and aac audio, in 480x800.
If you want to be sure you can view the Nexus' videos on your PC, set up a youtube account and upload them after recording. Then you can log into your YouTube account and download them as MP4 (h.264)

I always codec my videos to mp4 or m4v... I have loads of videos I've converted for my Omnia HD which are mostly mp4 and divx.... haven't tried any divx yet but the mp4's play just fine.
In case anyone needs an awesome video converter the best one IMO is format factory, which is free and has tons of presets and is easy to use.

[Q] Android Video Playback

I have installed this rom -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814285
and had also installed the famour Azure 1.0.1 by aliba
i found both couldnt play some mp4
so my question is that does android support mp4 playback ? if it does how will i put it in my current rom [ i have tried 3rd part video players , it failed].
and what video extensions does a normal aOS support ?!
Thanks
Android supports mp4 playback.

AFAIK, mp4 is a file container and many things depend on the codec that was used to encode the video file. Personaly i'm using Handbrake to encode videos for watching them on my Legend, so if you want i could share the "proper" preset for this task.

Download and install Handbrake (free app). The preset is attached bellow this post, (if you're using Windows Vista / Seven) move it to C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\HandBrake
Use preset called "Legend". Good luck
EDIT: don't forget to extract attached file.
is there a better player than rockplayer?
videos that arent 480x320 work incredible bad on my legend. itself the 5800 had a better video playback function than just every player i tried so far on the legend.

Hi,

Have you tried re-encoding them with Handbrake?
The default player will play .avi video files which are mp3 encoded.

hi,
Download this tool:
http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/
It is imo the best video converter available, and its free.
Simply select from the side 'MPEG4 ASP (Xvid)' for video, and AAC for audio. And for format select MP4. The reason why these are the best settings for the Desire HD is that these codecs are supported at the hardware level.
Ok after you're done selecting the formats, the important thing is when you click save, you must write .mp4 at the end of the filename. Without this then the file will have no extension.
You should get the app Rockplayer from the market to play your vids. Its great because it has a hardware playback mode and will play any file you converted, VERY smoothly as long as you chose the settings i described above. I was stunned when i watched a trailer from Gran Tursimo 5 that i converted.
Anyway hope this helps.
Format is 480p BRRip Xvid AC3-FLAWL3SS.avi.
Before I have the Galaxy S and watched moves with mVideo Player, so as I got my HTC installed the same player, but it could not run a movies. I started to install different app palayers and managed to let them in VPlayer beta.
Hi,
I use RockPlayer, you can play Divx, Avi, Mp4... no need change the format I have a full version from 1.5.1 Mod edit: warez url removed from my Megaupload Account
