I keep my Desire Z on when it's in the dock, displaying a flip-clock app.
Unfortunately, when it's on and powered, it insists on keeping the capacitive button lights on.
Is there any way of disabling those lights?
Thanks!
If you are using CyanogenMod you can adjust the settings for auto back light and there are controls for the buttons also. You can set them to be off all but when it is the darkest. That's what I do.

Hm, I am using CM 7, but I can't find the settings for the buttons. Can you be more specific? Thanks.

Yup, I've got that, but no specific button setting. Sorry.
Use custom>edit other levels...

THAT's where it was! Thanks so much - exactly what I needed.
Alternatively you can use an awesome app called Screen Filter (available at the market)
It's not an automatic solution but when I used CM7 I mapped it to long pressing search which made it very useful.

So it seem no one has been able to solve the trackpad wake for froyo then. The wildpuzzle patch doesn't work, third party apps like widget locker not working as confirmed by developer and others that keep the phone awake is useless since it drains battery.
What did Google do to the key layout?
Even cyanogen built-in setting doesn't work.

Thanx for suggesting this app it does help saving to press the power, but I find it keeps my phone in the wake since the sensors always on thus draining battery. But it is better than the power button every time.

I use wildpuzzle track pad to wake until now. NO problem for me

No that patch doesn't work on v0.8, it even locks all keys when the phone falls into deep sleep requiring power and trackpad buttons together to wake it up.
The app suggested by villis87 is the closest thing to avoid using the power button too much.

i've just flashed 0401 trackball wake up patch from old wildpuzzle thread on my wildpuzzle v.08 and as melvinchng said it works perfectly
Does anyone know if there is a way to disable the hard keys on the x? I use my phone so much I don't need the annoying light keys. Half the time they constantly turn on and off anyways.

There is a free app in the market called adjbrightness it requires root but it has a button backlight overide feature... also has a neat lower than stock brightness level (just edit the lowest value to a 2 I believe) saves a lot of battery setting the screen so dim... there might be an app specifically for button backlight though if that's all you want...

Thanks for the tip on the adjbrightness app. The erratic button light thing has been bugging me since an early update from VZW, and I never had been able to find a true solution to the problem. The logic of the button behavior is beyond me. Some nights it's on and refuses to go off, some it's off, seemingly without reason, and it is now blindingly and annoyingly bright, so any relief is welcome.
I know the app is just a workaround for the underlying problem, but my Droid X is within months of being replaced, so I'm happy to at least have this level of control in the interim.
Also, there's a script
There's a script here that can be run with script manager at boot that does the trick quite nicely:
I would post a link... but I'm "new" so I can't do that... Search for "lightsoff.sh droid x"
apps
There is almost an app for everything.
Tried that app and it works, which is nice. I remember when Gingerbread came out the lights started staying on a lot more and were a lot brighter. Nice to turn them off. Must help the battery a bit too.
But, is there a way to adjust the brightness level of the buttons? I've searched the play store to no avail, and this app only turns them on and off. (and is a permanent toggle too, would also be nice to have them come on for a short timeout, ending just before the screen - but at a lower brightness level) Not sure if this is possible or not, but since the software did affect the level, I'm hoping someone already has or knows of an app for it.

I just now looked through it using ES File Explorer and it's file viewer. I didn't see anything that looked button related, but without a search feature, I might have just missed it maybe. (but if so, I won't find it - I don't think I missed it...)
I downloaded a build.prop editor and through that found a setting for the button timeout. Options were 1 (which it already was) or zero. Tried 0, saved it and rebooted, but it seemed to have no effect. And nothing for brightness.
I am currently running AOKP on my Tmobile version and enabled the onscreen navigation bar. Id like to know if we have a script that disables the capacitive buttons yet on this device, and if not, a request for a dev to make one. Thank you.
I haven't been able to disable them, but if you just want to have the capacitive buttons not light up snag "Screen Filter" as it lets you turn off the button lights (set it to 100% if you don't want to dim your screen). I also used "Auto Start (no root)" to have it start at boot.

What do you mean disable those buttons? Disable actions when pressing them?
So you have a huge useless bezel at the bottom of your screen?

Well mostly disable the light. I want to use the on screen navigation keys in AOKP as a substitute.

Please don't be rude, especially because you are wrong. This option is only available in the stock touchwiz based rom. I am on AOKP.

Sry. Reading comprehension was subpar on my part.
This is actually a very useful tool if available. On my Asus Transformer Prime, there is a lock setting that disables the capacitive buttons while you watch a movie or play a game. I know the OP wants to disable the capacitive buttons for the purpose of replacing it with the AOKP onscreen buttons, but I would like to have that ability just to disable it so that I don't accidentally press on those buttons while playing game or watching video. Like a quick setting from the notification bar to lock it would be perfect!
Ill be subscribing to this thread for when we get a daily driver AOSP rom on Verizon. I too would like to disable the capacitive buttons and have on-screen navigation buttons instead. I find the capacitive buttons are too hard to press when I want to and too easy to accidentally press when I don't want to.

So, I don't know how to actually disable the button function (I'm running task's AOKP rom) and I didn't like using that Screen Filter app to keep the backlight off since it keeps it in the notification bar.
However, it is pretty easy to keep just the backlight off. Go into Settings>Display>Custom Backlight Settings. Check the "Use custom" option and go into "Edit other levels...".
Change the value for all the different levels from 1 to 0. Reboot and enjoy!

Do you happen to know what or where this line of code is so that we may modify it...?
Thanks,
Hey just signed up with my new email and I am unable to post of the PAC forum yet. so i figured i would get some help here. Anybody have any idea how to disable the back and menu key backlight. I hate the lights coming on even for just a second, its a unnessecary (but small) battery drain, and i really like how flat and black my phone looks and would rather not have those buttons show.
You may disable key light as it. Setting/my device/display /touch key light duration /always off. If I helped. Press the thanks button.

Thank you but i think that is how to disable to lights on the stock rom. I am using the 9/4 nightly of the PAC rom. the setting is not under display and lights.
It used to be under advanced settings. that is no longer an option. any ideas?
Use a different launcher like nova, apex or adw, long press the home screen and add shortcut. Add advanced settings. There ya go

Sorry if this is old news but I seen a few people asking if you could disable these especially over at the clean Rom thread cause the developer included soft keys in the rom. Anyways again I'm sorry if this is old news but you go to accessibility/access control. It then walks you through a series of steps like if you want certain parts of the screen to not be affected by touch and so on. I thought this was pretty sweet. Not sure if it's for all models and firmware but worth a shot!

It's all the way at the very bottom of Accessibility. It is listed under Recognition. Turn it on. Then hold down the home button and and volume down to enter the wizard.
It should be helpful for when I do note taking at a meeting so I don't have to worry about touching the physical buttons. But for Button Savior Pro it disables the Home, Menu and Back so it's not something I can have on all the time. Plus the notification drawer cannot be interacted with anymore while this mode is on.
