Coming from a blackberry, i have universal search that lets me type and find content on blackberry messenger, emails, facebook, contacts and even some third party apps.
While i know that android itself has some of these, there are third party apps that extend this feature. Do you use one of these apps? Which one?
I wish there was a way to use universal search (built into Android,) to search Google Maps, like I could on WebOS. I find that if I am hitting the search button, over half the time I am looking for a phone number from the yellowpages, (maps.)
I very much miss being able to start typing a contacts name at the home screen and having it pop up. Currently I have the far right launcher (ADW) set to Contact Search, but it's still to presses to get started. If anyone finds something that works more seamlessly, please let us know.
Well the built-in search feature of Android does search contacts... Depending on what ROM you're running, how your contacts are sync'd can effect if they appear in results. I can tell you that on CM7 nightly 21, with TouchDown and Facebook sync, that my contacts all appear when I just hit the search key and start typing. I just wish that one of the options was to start a search in maps.
Hit the search capacitive button at the bottom and start typing. If they don't show up, go into settings and make sure iit searches for contacts too.

I wasn't able to get the facebook app to search. It doesn't seem to accept the CR key from HD2 keyboard.
so theres no way of searching for contacts to add in the fb app
yea.. you are just going to have to load up your mobile internet browser.. and do it from there..
the windows mobile facebook app just suxx..
better go directly to the original page, even if its some secs slower, its better :/
Don't know what you guys are talking about; I can use search function (by using menu -> search). But I installed latest version of Facebook.
Facebook has many features that can help you in your search for groups, networks, as well as people. One feature you can use is the advanced search option. With this searching option, you can look for anybody, anywhere, and at any time by location, profession, and school among others. This is just one way for you to search for someone on Facebook.
Hi All,
My desire is set to use only gmail contacts list in PEOPLE (checked and doubledhecked, facebook is NOT ticked)
However, when i click the phone button to make a call the list that appears behind the 0-9 keys contains my facebook contacts as well as my gmail contacts.
I've looked far and wide to be able to disable the facebook contacts with number to display behind the 0-9 keys but without success..
Bear in mind I still want to sync facebook notifications, just NOT contact list.
Could you please guide me the right way on this?
TL;DR Facebook contacts behind 0-9 keys, I only want PEOPLE in that list.
Thanks
EDIT: SOLVED, removed the FriendStream widget.
no solution at this time that i know of other than to NOT sync them in the first place, but as that is not what you want, there is no solution for your case.
the view option in people only hides them in people, not anywhere else.
Now yes, this is a damn stupid state of affairs, but it's what we're currently stuck with.
I've tried a couple of TV guides from the market, and while they do the job. Is there any that can add reminders to the calender?
I've read that UK-TV GUIDE by Luke Shan does this, but I've tried a couple of shows, and done a sync all but they just dont seem to show up in the agenda.
Anyone got any ideas?
It says on it that it has a program reminder, either native or google calendar. I'm going to have a go now and see what it does. I'll get back to you.
Edit: Try opening it, press menu then settings and reminder method, set this to google calendar.
I use record it which does what you're after. The same developer has a free version which doesn't include record requests - but might have calendar entries if you check.

Ahh I see it now. I'm so used to winmo when I don't see softkey menus I forget to check the options.
Ok, I'm an iPhone user trying to make the switch to Android. This is my 3rd or 4th attempt, having previously tried with an HTC Aria, a Samsung Captivate, and briefly a Dell Streak. Every time, I have ended up flipping back to my iPhone, which, though not "geek cool" just does what I want it to do.
This time, I have the Atrix, and I'm REALLY close to switching. Love the formfactor. Love the screen rez. Love the battery life. However, one huge thing is missing. How the heck do I search my email? I have 6-7 email accounts that I sync up - 2 gmail accounts, 1 Exchange account, and various other IMAP and POP mail account.
In the past I've always been able to start a quick search and quickly find stuff I need. What was my skymiles number again? Search "skymiles." Boom. Got it. What was the name that Thai place I had lunch at with my friend? Search "Randy Thai" Boom. Got it.
Please don't answer with "Just use gmail" or "Why do you have so many accounts?" That's not helpful. I just want to know why Google, a search company, didn't make it easy for me to search my synced email accounts for ordinary stuff.
This is not a sexy feature, but it may be a dealbreaker. Help?
I tried hitting the little magnifying glass on the bottom right of the phone. That doesn't work?

FIX IT!
The Magnifying glass lets me search lots of things. Web, Apps, Contacts, many of my apps. But vexingly enough, not Email? Am I stupid or is Android missing a key feature?
Seriously, I don't care about searching the web. I'll use the browser to do that. On my phone, I want to search contacts and email.
Are you listening Google? Fix. It. FIX IT!
Works for me, once I'm in the email app...

Make sure you're in your email app. Then hit search button. And try out K-9 Mail
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
Does anyone know if there is a way to add the filtering options to the contacts app instead of just the contacts in the dialler area?
Samsung seem to have removed the "display only contacts with phone numbers" from the contacts app... which means when I sync the phone with my google account, it syncs ALL my gmail contacts down as well.
So my contacts app is flooded with hundreds of contacts with random names and email addresses from Gmail that I rarely use, and it takes me ages to navigate through to find the contact I want to call or message. In the grand scheme of things, it's a minor annoyance really... but it's something i really hate about this phone now and it makes me dread opening the contacts app.
Just wondering if it's an option I've missed somewhere or if anyone knows a workaround for it?
Unfortunately there is no other option than installing and using another contacts+dialer app from the Google Play store...
that what i thought... damn, i hate using third party contacts / dialler options
hopefully some helpful developer will add the option to a custom rom so i can actually look at my contacts app without dread lol
My S7E has the option to only show contacts with numbers. Maybe your carrier removed it for some reason? Can't see why though?
In the phone app, go to More > Settings > and there's an option near the top for only contacts with numbers.
AFAIK that option is available only in the phone dialer screen, not in the contact list settings, but maybe once selected in the dialer settings it's also working for the contact list.
I'm using a third party contacts+dialer app so I can't test myself.
Ahhh, sorry, I misread the OP. You're right, it's only for the dialler contacts list, not the Contacts app itself.
You can choose a customised list, where you can select what users you want to see. That might be good enough?
