[Q] Tips or Howto for OpenVPN on the Epic? - Epic 4G General

I have the tun.ko module loaded, and openvpn-settings package installed, but after it prompts for the username/password, it doesn't seem to want to connect.
It just goes from "Resolve --> Unknown --> Reconnecting (caused by init_instance)" and repeats itself forever.
Anyone have any suggestions?

bump...come on, there has to to be someone out there using OpenVPN on this phone...

I can only get it to say "connected to xx.xx.xx.xx as" and that's it.

Same here - I can get to a connected state and I do see an established socket to my vpn server on 443 in netstat. Seems like the routes themselves aren't getting added or perhaps the tun interface isn't coming up. Gave up troubleshooting the other night, ill probably mess with it more this weekend.

Check syslog on the server side.
There's a fair amount that goes on between initial connect and routes working, but the logs should give an indication on where a client is getting stuck.

If you're using Twilight Zone, tun.ko is not included (yet?) - did you load the module?

I got the tun.ko from the other thread in the dev section. it was compiled for eb13 and gets insmod'd by openvpn when I try to connect.

You can also try using aLogcat or regular "adb logcat" to grab debugging info while starting OpenVPN.
Logcat is pretty verbose, so you'll have to search for when the OpenVPN lines start and stop. But if you post the result I'll take a look.

Proxy Setting for Archos 101

Guys! I just like to ask if anyone know a working proxy setting app for Archos 101. Just got my archos but unable to use my internet in the office since we are using proxy server in our internet.
Hope anyone ca help me out. Thaks in advance!

Anyone? I really need to use proxy...
Sent from my A101IT using Tapatalk
I know I have seen the option I am just exploring to see if I can figure it out. As far as I can tell you have to get an app for it.
android doesn't support wifi proxies on its own (what a shame)!
Only possible solution would be this app http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=766569 . But for that you need root & iptables support.
Both isn't available for the 101. Even with the SDE version (the one you loose guarantee with) i believe there is no iptables support.
I tried it with the old 2.1 firmware and zroot and it said "iptables missing"!
only thing left is to use opera mini which finds the proxy automatically (or opera mobile, where you can manually insert a proxy, type "opera:config" in the address bar.
Oh... hope archos can address this proxy issue. I believe Galaxy S is capable in setting a proxy in their wireless connection. Both A101IT and Galaxy S use froyo right?
If anyone know a working proxy app please share it with us. That. Would really be a great help.
Thank again!

IPTables support is planned for a future release of $aur0n's rooted android release.
See here for more info.
There is a Proxy Menu on Android.
Use "Any Cut" from the market and create a shortcut to that function.
did you get that successfully working ?
i know its generally possible to have wifi proxies on android (hence the possible shortcut - e.g. with samsung devices), but you need to have kernels that support that function and i don't know if the archos does.
i have already tried the "Anycut" method but it doesn't work. I've successfully installed Firefox with proxy add ons. its working but the problem is it often unresponsive. Sometimes i'm forced to reboot my archos.
Hope gingerbread or honeycomb have the proxy supports when it becomes available to A101IT.

Hi
i have mailed Archos Support with this question and their short answer was:
The device does not support this.
Great!! :-(
Ray
Well based on my research. Android as of today does not really have proxy support. But it can be enabled if we root our system. Hopefully someone can do a full root of the archos 101IT.
Maybe someone already did? can u share it with us...

There is an app in the Android Market called "Proxy Settings" that may help. I have not taken a close look at it or tried to configure it yet, so I honestly don't know for sure, but it is worth a try.
It
1) Has a fonts problem, all inscriptions are tiny. It seems the developer used fixed font size that is normally viewed on the phone but can't be scaled ant totally unreadable on 10".
2) Doesn't help anyway.

even rooted, the 101 is missing the nessecary "ip tables" for the proxy settings tool!!
Yes we know that the ip tables are missing in the 101. That is why we need first to fully root the device then find a way to put in the ip table.
Other android device have it so it means it can be also done with our 101.
Things like this is why we have forums. For us to exchange ideas so we can help each other right?
Lets help each other shall we??? Not everyone here is an expert thats why we ask questions...

Well you don't have to be an ass about it.
I did state that I had not tested it. I was merely offering a potential option to try, not one I guaranteed would work.
archos 101 SW update 2.1.08
Archos has delivered a firmware update to 2.1.08 on Feb 16 2011.
It brings a new option "WLAN Proxy Settings". You can enter a proxy-host/IP and port, and check the "Enabled" checkbox.
Sadly it does not work for me, the checkbox is disabled when I select the option again to verify.
Goto Archos web site, choose support/downloads, then select your device and download the update file (82 MB).
the URL is update.archos.com,
path /8/gen8/gen8_2.1.08
filename firmware_archos_android_gen8.aos

Cisco vpn issue - still confusing

It's been quite a while since I bought my Galaxy Tab and I still can't figure out how to set a working VPN connection..! There are so many topics regarding this issue but I still find setting tun.ko, using get-a-robot-vpnc, etc. too much confusing. I wonder if there is some step-by-step tutorial for newbies out there...
Please advice,
Thanks in advance
Hi,
I couldn't find a tutorial either, and I had to figure it myself. So here is a little help, that might work.
- get a custom ROM (most come with kernels that have tun support
- get vpnc from the Market
- add vpnc widget to your. "Desktop"
- start vpnc from your application drawer and configure connection parameters
- go back to your desktop and click on the vpnc widget
That should be all, hovewer I found out that even though I was successfully connected to the corporate Von I still couldn't reach the servers.... and that is because my kernel doesn't support advanced IP routing.
So,people out there ..please let me know which kernel has advanced IP routing support. (Currently using speedmod.)

yes I have done that.
it does require permanent root but...
root
get tun.ko
Install busybox
get vpnc from mkt
that's really all I had to do.
if you search my posts I think I did a post with a little more detail.

Hi,
I've got Galaxy Tab and I have done the tun.ko and the busybox, and the insmod, and link for ifconfig and route..
my vpnc connects, says connected and stays connected.. But I cannot reach anything int he vpn network.. if I do "ip link show"... kind f like doing ifconfig -a on linux, I can see the tun interface, but it's down.
Is this really about advanced routing? If so, how come a lot of poeple on the forums are saying that they are succeeding in connecting fto CISCO vpn. It's worthless without being able to route there?!
Thanks,
Where do I have to put through tun.Ko?
root
get tun.ko
Install busybox
get vpnc from mkt and grant it root privileges
it's been working for me, the only thing is not working is the DNS. It seems when I am connected to the VPN I still can't access server by name, the only way is to use IP
if anyone solved that problem, please let me know

Kindle Fire VPN?

Hey guys,
Wondering if anyone been able to connect to a VPN service. I am in Canada and as you know, Amazon does not allow content to cross the border.
I have successfully used ibVPN (www.ibvpn.com) on my iPhone, iPad and PC but I cannot get the Kindle to connect for some reason.
When looking at 'All Applications' I see a VPN Services with Kindle in the icon. Can I assume that this is how Amazon is stopping me from connecting?
I have tried 1-VPN, 5-VPN, QuickVPN and PandaPow ... none work.
Anyone have any insight?
TIA

If you look under "all applications" there is something called VPN Service.
Amazon might have only removed the GUI to configure and connect VPN?
The way I see it, you will need a VPN enabled wireless router. It's well explained here:
Amazon Prime With Kindle Fire VPN
It's pretty well written, but if you have any question, ask here.
I'm using DroidVPN direct from the KF.

I enabled TUN/TAP support in my custom kernel a few releases ago. You could try that if you're willing to test. No guarantees it will work though since I don't really use VPN and just enabled it due to a request made.

I just realized I neglected to let you know... It works fine. I just connected to my OpenVPN server and traffic seems to pass fine. Thanks for enabling it. I'm on CM9, but it should work on even stock if you have the OpenVPN binary and busybox installed.
I used tun.ko installer from the market on my rooted KF, and it allowed me to use Cisco AnyConnect.

Sorry, just got home now. Basically the problem is with private keys. I generate a private key, copy the public key to my router, and the private key always fails! I can't understand it because I've done this process hundreds of times with other devices and it works fine. It's not just Connectbot, I also tried Juice-SSH to see if that would help, but it's the same problem, the key fails.
I'm honestly doing my nut over this, I can't figure out what the problem could be!
Any input would be massively appreciated!
Cheers

I use ConnectBot v1.7.1.2010.10.08 with a 4096 bit RSA key to connect to ubuntu linux without issue.
I copied my public key (openssh format) and pasted it into a new Gmail draft message. I then added it to the file ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
Make sure the entire key is one line and some text editor did not add <CR>'s or <LF>'s to the pub key...
It's why I use vim and Notepad++ as editors.

That's the thing. I do the same thing, copy it into a gmail draft them paste it into DD-WRT authorised keys. I think the most frustrating thing, is that it works fine with my N7, HTC Desire S but not with the N4, and I am not doing anything different.
I have triple checked the public key, and nothing appears to be added.

Or you could set it up on a terminal emulator if you can find the binaries, and the libraries. That's how I'm doing it.
Hi,
I'm Paul one of the two developers of JuiceSSH.
One thing to check that often catches people out is that SSH can be very fussy on permissions on the home directory, the .ssh directory and the authorized_keys file.
Try:
chmod 700 ~;
chmod 700 ~/.ssh;
chmod 600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
It doesn't matter about the permissions on the device/JuiceSSH side.
Does the key work if you try and SSH in from your PC - ie is it just from your phone you're having problems?
Edit to add: My girlfriend uses an N4 and i've tested SSH keys numerous times on it during our development/testing so I doubt it's a problem with the Nexus 4 itself.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for replying. I don't think it's the permission because all of my other devices work fine. I've tried the same key from my N7, and my PC and it works fine. But, as you say, it may not be the N4 as others have used it and it works fine.
It's very frustrating in the fact that it seems to be isolated to just my N4, making support pretty difficult!
Cheers

Another good option is to run sshd on the server in debug mode and take a look at the more verbose logs of what is going on behind the scenes.
The safest way to do it is not to mess with the currently running sshd process or configuration (especially if it's a remote machine) but to spawn a new sshd server in foreground+debug mode on a different port number by running:
sudo /usr/sbin/sshd -p 2222 -D -d -e
Then setting up JuiceSSH to connect to port 2222 instead.
This will need port 2222 opening on any firewalls you have though.
If that still doesn't give any better clues feel free to paste the log here and i'll take a look.
Also I could give you a JuiceSSH APK file that has very verbose ssh logging turned on however you would need to have adb setup and installed on your PC in order to view the logs.
Thanks.
Paul
Cheers again Paul. I'm not too sure about being able to open another ssh service on my router. If you could help me out with that apk that would be great. Would it still get the logs even if I am making the connection to my router?

PIA VPN working on Fire Stick with Alexa

Not sure if anyone knew but PIA (Private Internet Access) does work on the Fire Stick with Alexa running 5.2.4.0 (I'm not sure if it works on 5.2.2.0). I will say it runs slower then running it through my router by half. Now to get this puppy rooted P.S. I give up on trying to upload pics.
To be more precise you are saying that the PIA Android app works fine on a FireTV Stick 2. Which is to be expected since the FTVS2's hardware is close to being as powerful as a FireTV 1 Box.
It's good to have confirmation. :good:

You don't, you just need to connect to the Wifi that already has the VPN working. The PIA Android App is only for those that want to run a VPN on a per device bases or if you can not run the VPN thru our router or secondary router. A router run VPN is always recommend due to specs. But being able to run it a FireTV device itself is a good second choice.

Some are able to run a Wifi signal as a repeater on a laptop or desktop. But running the app on the device itself is much less complicated.
Are you running PIA on a FTVS1 or FTVS2. Spec wise I would only recommend running it on a FTV1, FTV2 or FTVS2 but I bet it runs ok on a FTVS1 although those are way slow. Guess having only used FTV1's for myself & programed FTVS1's for my F&F's have giving me a slow experience with FTVS1's. Messed with a couple of FVTS2's recently. And I still would prefer my FTV1's speed & controller wise. I hope the GUI update for FTV1's gets release soon.
I have the 2nd gen. FTVS2 amd Kodi Krypton 17. I've seen some saying PIA doesn't work well on 1st gen, saying it is on, but doesn't change the IP. IP Vanish is said to work good with gen 1. I just pushed the APK to the stick from my laptop with mimimal ADB and fastboot. Pushed mouse toggle also and everything works fine. I mostly run/install FTG Builds (FireTVGuru Builds: http://firetvguru.net/) since those builds are the easiest builds to keep updated by folks that don't like to pay attention to things. But all of those are still Kodi v16.1 based.

Is it possible to have the PIA VPN enable automatically when Kodi is run but disable when you close out of the app? I was just curious since when I try to watch something on Amazon Prime it's blocked when the VPN is enabled.
