[request] a few killer apps!!! - Android Software Development

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, if it is, mods please move to correct forum.
A couple of apps that I think would be really great to have for Android are:
1. a true HDR capture program, like iPhone now has
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.eyeappsllc.prohdr
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.almalence.hdr_plus
2. an application that would read you PDFs, etc.. I know there is one that reads txt files, but I would love to be able to have my Android read some PDFs to me!
https://market.android.com/details?id=udk.android.reader
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.practicalapps
3. A camera application that allows you to take long exposures, like of the night, etc, like the iPhone also has.
Just a few thoughts. I have the MT4G and love it. I have it rooted, but haven't installed any ROMs on it because I'm perfectly happy with it's stock setup aside from some programs I've installed like Google WIFI Tethering, etc.. And I was looking around for some "killer" apps and these were a few I've found that don't exist as of this writing for Android.
UPDATE: I've found the first two. Still not found number three. Updated with links!

[Q] About to jump to Android :)

Devs - I have been following the android development here on and off. I feel I've had enough of WM 6.5 and want to jump over to android. I have been doing lots of reading lately, but am not getting answers to few questions - Please let me know if android supports the following, I'm continuing my research as well
1) Exchange support: My office e-mail is also synced to my HD2. Does Android allow this?
2) Geo-tagging of pictures
3) Do we have any equivalent of Microsoft myphone? It feels good to have all data backed up to the cloud each night.
4) Twitter / Facebook - no worries here. official apps available
5) Compatibilty with MS Office apps? Can we view/edit excel, ppt's and word docs?
6) RSS feed readers? I use the one that comes with Sense
7) Facebook / Contacts integration
8) What is the best way of exporting PIM data (appointments, messages, contacts) from WM and importing it into Android?
9) Do we have complete media support? I have a good collection of songs and movies on my phone now. Also, does android support hardware acceleration for movies like the HTC photos app does?
10) Does GPS and the digital compass work? does the Google maps app on Android make use of the GPS receiver?
More questions as and when they come up.
I am on the following:
ROM version: 1.48.720.2 WWE
Radio version: 2.05.51.05_2
I am running the stock ROM that came with the phone, and I've got only the official hotfixes from the HTC site. Anything else I should be aware of while upgrading?
thanks in advance for all the help!
I have just installed my first android rom and I don't think you are going to get all you are hoping for. Most things work, depending on which build you go for but as I found you only have about half the functionality you get from WM6.5 - not because of the operating system, android is very slick and pretty, but it's the software you've accumulated over the years that makes the difference.
I think if I spent a few weeks accumulating all the apps then things might get close but android feels a little restrictive after so many years using WM.
You are best off trying it, it will run alongside WM with a little effort.
Upgrading to another ROM & radio is your first step, I'm using the latest stock 3.14 with no problem. Format a fresh SD card and start to load it, make sure all your WM apps are shut as windows exits very fast.
I have to say that the browser in android is the best I have ever seen on any device, flash works, videos play, browsing is almost the same as a desktop - it makes WM look it's age.
1. Yup, Ecxchange ActiveSync is part of android.
2. I've never really used it on Darkstone's FroyoStone, but it's part of the settings in the camera, and it activates the GPS.. So I guess so.
3. I use Gmail. It syncs mail, contacts and calendar. Really haven't searched for anything else, since I used gmail in WinMo.
4. You said it, man.
5. No idea.
6. Plenty on the market, and lots of them are free.
7. Works like a charm, and imho better than WinMo.
8. Again, I used Gmail. It doesn't export messages, but that didn't bother me.
9. No idea.
10. Yes. I'm having a feeling that sometimes my digital compass is acting a little weird, but I'm not sure. Maybe its my sense of orientation thats a little weird
I must say that I feel the exact opposite of boomboomer, android doesnt feel the slightest restrictive to me. The android OS as a whole took a couple of days to get used to, but the plethora of possibilities available just in the android market seems just awesome to me. I spend two days on finding the equivalent WinMo apps on the android market, and stumbled upon a lot more awesome apps in the process. (Even found my beloved Chuck Norris app!
But I do agree on the browser. It really is lightning fast!
You can use Sprite Migrate to move contacts and anything else from WM to Android. Ill post the steps later is necessary but you should be able to just Google it.

Yes all of those things are functional in hyperdroid 1.6. This is what I run. I have posted my directions here. Easy to follow:

Thanks everyone for your feedback.
@ Klovnecaspar - how do you sync messages and pics to the cloud? gmail takes care of contacts, mails and appointments
@Zynro - Thanks. I will try it out.
@AMCjungle - Looks like a pretty detailed procedure. I don't have a T mobile HD2. It's a T8585 model. Would there be any change in the procedure?
Okay. I've made the jump. Installed the stock 3.14 ROM followed by the darkstone froyo build. Everything's good so far, still setting up everything ....

Don't hesitate to post your feelings about it when you get used to android... I loved wm, but use android on my hd2 for months and honestly I can't go back.
My first tips are:
don't use a task killer it will be counter productive
Use an alternative home, launcher pro is highly recommended
For a business use, calendar widgets like pure calendar and pure grid calendar are very readable and customizable
Titanium backup is able to backup all your programs and their data on your sd card. You can after upload them in a dropbox account. Indispensable in case you have a problem or want to change build
For editing office files, the best I found is documents to go. Give it a try its great.
The only drawback I found is that you can't sync your notes with onenote. There are some great apps for notes that can sync to cloud like catch but I prefer use a simple text document with the powerful search features of the file editor Astro.
Oh for playing videos rockplayer is free, and play all kind of videos without a glitch, even with subtitles if you want.
hope that will help your experience
Wow...thanks a ton...will get titanium backup asap.
I've started to encounter the data corruption issue...missing files some of them appear in the "lost. dir" folder.
Another issue is with the data connection...it drops intermittently ans I have to switch on the airplane mode and then turn it off to restore the connection.
Any thoughts?
Overall, it has been a fabulous experience. It would be wonderful if HTC released an official rom for the hd2

Listables

Just thought I'd let you guys know that Listables works great on Xoom. I figure that most people have probably manually installed a lot of the apps on their phones using apks and since we can't nandroid yet, this would be a good way to keep a list of all the apps you currently have on your device. Just check off your apps in the list, email/dropbox/bluetooth as html file(w/ QR codes, links to market, etc.),xml, or plain text. It can do a few more things as well. Anyway, check it out!

Edit: Hmm...maybe this should have been put in the Themes and Apps subforum. Sorry about that!!

Android Tablet Newbie

So after some extensive searching and not really finding a solid reference, I wanted to ask you guys some things. First off, I have been using Android for a couple years now, with my first phone being a Hero (which I absolutely hated) and my latest phone being an Evo 4G. Well, I just sold my iPad for the Xformer and I don't regret it in the slightest, only problem now is I feel like I'm not getting the full potential of what this device is capable of handling. That's where I wanted to come here. Can anyone recommend some sort of Beginners guide to Must-Have apps, widgets, and other things for honeycomb? I'm just looking to get the most out of this. Also, I'm not opposed to paid apps or widgets.
Second, does anyone know of a simple, easy way of sharing files or pushing things between two android devices? With having an android phone and tablet, there are things I'll find on my tablet, for instance the apk for the new market, that I wish I could just easily push the link similar to chrome to android? Also file sharing. I find Bluetooth works simply but what about over wifi? Any ways to do this. I normally just email myself files and open them on the other device, but i feel theres gotta be a better solution.
I appreciate any and all help and if I missed something already posted, I apologize but please do share ANY advice. Thank you.

Have you tried DropBox?
You can share between Android devices, and any other device...
First question : depends on what kind of apps and widget you want.
Second question : you can install an ftp server/client on your devices. For exemple file expert can access files via network, be it smb or ftp. Just do a search on the market for these apps.
Hope that helps.
I use WIFI File Explorer to transfer files to and from my TF via the laptop...I'm sure that it would work the same between two android devices.
I use DropBox (from the app store) on three computers, an Android phone, and my Transformer. My son has it on his iPad, his computer, and his Android phone and I keep one folder in my DropBox that I share with him. I also use the free Asus webstorage on my main computer, Transformer, and phone (it's in the app store). Both of them work really well for me. - sheureka
I would certainly recommend looking at the initial post in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068593. I found the Tips and tricks link in that post particularly helpful when I was starting out.

Suggestions on what to include in System Check app

Dont what to call it so I dont know how to search for it, (mods, please dont ping me, I looked through the categories and figures this was the right place to post)
I'm thinking about creating an app that checks different functions to verify that they work as my first Android app. The purpose of this is that I'm constantly buying and selling phones and installing ROMs and I would like to speed up the process of checking to make sure calling works, MMS, SMS, data, SD Card, GPS... etc. I need a few suggestions if you guys would be so kind.
Suggestions on what to call it, would be great as well as what checks to put in it. This will be great to install on ROMs to make sure everything works before you take the time to restore your settings.
If you comment, please put your suggestions in List format then expound later to make them easy to read. Thanks a lot. Also, should this be a terminal script or is it better as an app. I havent jumped into development yet (I'm starting tomorrow) so I dont know which would be more suitable. Thanks for your input.
Well, if you're not sure yourself what it should be and should do, one great way is to look what open-source apps exist with similar functionality and try to extend them to your needs.
One such app is "android analyzer", you can google for it and see if it looks good for you. It is essentially a "sysinfo" style application which collects and shows all the info about the device.
Thank you. I was looking for something like this

[Apps] for I'm Watch Smartwatch

I started on the wrong foot, but finally found that it likes Android 1.6 Apps!
- Angry Birds!!!!!! (with music and usable, albeit, it just takes a little time to Start just Once Initially, the everything is quite normalish after initial start..... But the initial Splash screen looks so cool on the smartwatch it is worth the wait).
- Dolphin Browser
- Opera Mini Browser
Hints:
- To download anything in Opera Mini, select the DCIM folder, it seems it does not like to download on initial root. Warning, it is not fast downloading.
- When typing remember that it is a good idea that when typing in the small keyboard, that if you are fast, and keep pressing a key and notice it was not the one you intended, before releasing the key, if you do it fast enough, you can move your finger towards the correct key before releasing your finger. This is much faster than having to delete a wrong entered letter. If you keep pressing and fail to move fast, it would suggest alternative based on the wrong letter and you can no longer move to next, but if you click elsewhere, it won't type the wrong letter.
- Dolphin Browser is great because you can define shortcuts for common menus (remember you don't have a menu key), with its gestures. I made a gesture for settings and other to go to downloads and for full screen!
More Apps come!!
Please Share your Apps!!!
More Apps!
- Aptoid works quite fine to install new apps.
- Backgammon Free
- Bazooka Rabbit works! (albeit, not all the screen appears, but it is playable).
- ES File Explorer
- .... more to try ...
Are you running the latest 2.1 os?
I'd be interested to see these apps in action on the watch. Anyone want to make a youtube video?

I just recently got my imwatch and I'm already using the amazing side loader machine to load random apps onto it. I'll try to get a video going of it if I can but otherwise not many apps seem to work on it. If you can give me some ideas and a link to the apk to make things easier I will have more examples to show.
Great little thread. Lets hope more people post the names of more suitable useful apps.

I'd be interested to see how some apps work compared to my Motoactv. So some examples would be emulators such as gbcoid, snesoid and n64oid. Maybe some android games such as Hill Climb, and Hardest Game Ever. Apps, I dunno, maybe root explorer (or just explorer), a browser (I use boat browser mini), and mxplayer playing a video would be cool to see. Everything but the emulators I just got off the Google Play store. If you can't access the store on the I'm Watch yet I remember being able to take apps off my phone. Just download the app on your phone, then use a file manager to browse to /data/app/, then send it to your computer (I use bluetooth). I can send you the emulator apk's, just PM me your e-mail.
Use bluestack make it easier to grab the apk and download multiple apps at the same time,
Games or apps compatible with android 1.6 will have a much better chance of working...
Good info
apps
Got some more apps that seem to work on the i'm watch after the 2.1.2 adb update
go jkeyboard works
mobicalc
advanced task killer
voice search kinda works, cant find netwrok connection. would like someone to get that working.
dropbox works
graffiti pro keyboard works
dolphin browser works
gesture search
but there arent many people who are rooting and or doing things for the watch,. So if you can give me any ideas as to what to do to it or how I'd appreciate it,. Such as unlocking the bootloader
What I'm finding is that anything where you can draw or speak is more useful for this watch.\
rooting with super on click was the best way of doing it honestly .
Ok so I found a useful group of apks that make customization something a greater thing.
email me @ [email protected]
for the link. (don't have enough posts for links)
Thanks!
There is a new ADB version out. The last was 2.1.2 but now there is a 2.2.0 which I am going to update to now and attempt to see if it changes much.
Heres hoping.
how do you install those apps on the watch , i just got me a i'm watch 2 weeks ago and this sounds interesting:good:

Well theres two ways to do it.
1. you can do the whole rooting process by getting the ADB software from imwatch and using super one click to root it then install it through a sideload manager.
2. you can download all the apks in there and go to the im market and get Sideload Manager app from there. Then you'd put the apks in the DCIM folder and go through the Sideload Manager and install it that way.
Note: You should disconnect from the pc when trying to install through sideload manager app for option two.
Hello, could anyone help me check "Endomondo" and/or "Runtastic" apps can work on the I'm Watch pls?
Very BIG thanks !

Hi all with this smartwatch. How is it with the last update? Better sound in conversation?

It's still pretty buggy. But from the things I've seen android phones have apps that are capable of handling and changing the volume and etc on there.
Don't quote me but its just what I've heard. I have an iPhone 5 so I can't really share from experience.
