AT&T is 2100mhz... T-Mobile USA is 1700mhz

That's strange. A G1 is unlockable to ATT, but only supports UMTS 1700/2100. The G1's in our store access 3G just fine. My X1i won't access anything but EDGE (not 3G). Since the G1 supports 1700 and X1i does not, this is the logical deduction that the X1i doesn't support the same standard that the G1 does which is T-Mobile USA 3G

Why would T-mobile chose a 3G band (1700+2100mhz) not used by any other company in the world?
It's really quite complicated, so I'll keep it simple (although the details won't be very clear).
It's neither HTC/SE nor T-mobile's fault. Unlike in Europe, the American government (FCC) does not define or reserve specific bands (1900mhz, 2100mhz, etc) for specific technologies (GSM, UMTS, CDMA, etc). The US government also does not want to reallocate bands that are already being used, even if it's for older technology. Since VoiceStream (Tmo before Deutsche Telekom bought it) didn't have any money to buy spectrum in advance for 3G, that pretty much means that T-mobile has had to settle for whatever bands are leftover.
T-mobile wanted to keep their US 3G bands the same as in Europe, but the lower half (uplink) is already occupied by another technology (which the FCC cannot or will not vacate). So the only choice was to launch 3G on the 1700+2100mhz "AWS" band, or have no 3G at all. And without 3G, AT&T would have a monopoly on UMTS, Tmo would lose business with only 2G, and we as customers would suffer in the long run (especially since without competition, AT&T could keep its prices artificially high).
For the other points, contrary to popular belief, Tmo is not the only carrier in the world that runs a UMTS network in the 1700mhz range. Carrier e-Mobile in Japan runs a UMTS 1700 network. It is slightly different than Tmo's AWS because e-Mobile uses 1700-uplink/1800-downlink (UMTS Band IX) while Tmo uses 1700-uplink/2100-downlink (UMTS Band IV) and is therefore still incompatible. However, as with the G1, it is fully possible to build a radio that can switch between "overlapping" modes (eg: 1700+2100 and 1900+2100* on the G1), it just isn't very cost-effective to make those radios at the moment.
*1900+2100 does not mean AT&T's UMTS 1900mhz network. It's 1900mhz uplink and 2100mhz downlink, and you can see the specific frequency differences here (UMTS Bands I and II).
Keep in mind (and this is a more general point): GSM started off with most phones being only dual-mode (900/1800mhz or 850/1900mhz), but after the technology matured tri- and quad-band radios became commonplace, and now quad-GSM phones are found everywhere. In time we might see a penta-band (850/900/1700/1900/2100) "global" UMTS radio become standard on all phones -- just not with the X1. Then again, by the time we see penta-radios, we will move on to 4G, and with the current split between WiMAX and LTE, we will probably have these same headaches all over again.
So if you want someone to blame, blame the FCC for being unable or unwilling to harmonize the US wireless spectrum with other global standards. Tmo, HTC, and SE are merely just trying to play the cards dealt to them.

You might also stop to consider: it is still possible for SE to release a Tmo-capable X1 (let's call it the X1t), but the only advantage is that it would work with Tmo, and thus only Tmo customers would buy it (unlike the X1a which can work with any 850/1900/2100mhz carrier, not just AT&T). That makes it cost-prohibitive at the moment. Furthermore, since it would be sold in the American market, the Qualcomm patent restrictions would still apply, and you would end up with the MSM7201A processor which many X1a users have been complaining about. There is just no perfect answer.

I'm pretty sure it's not. Sprint are CDMA (and their "4G" is WiMax). Their phones do not normally have any GSM capabilities.

Actually, the Epic 4G is CDMA/WCDMA capable. WCDMA being a hybrid of different GSM technologies. If you go into the Phone Info Test Mode (*#4636*1111#) > Phone Information, you can see how to change how the phone's radio interacts with different cell towers in the area. While in the US, there's no point in having WCDMA on because there are no WCDMA service providers here. However, when you go overseas... well, you get the picture.
The only reason this phone really isn't strictly GSM capable is because the radio isn't compatible, and there's no room for a SIM card to contain GSM network subscriber data.
"W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access), UMTS-FDD, UTRA-FDD, or IMT-2000 CDMA Direct Spread is an air interface standard found in 3G mobile telecommunications networks. I am planning to buy MT4G, unlock it and use it on another carrier with compatible frequencies of course. Will I be still able to get updates using for example a wifi connection? or should I download updates manually? Is there something that I will lose when I use the phone on another carrier ?
I don't know if you mean overseas or in any place other than the U.S. but the only "compatible" carrier for this phone besides T-Mobile is AT&T. The reason why compatible is in quotes is because yes the phone would function and make calls on that network, but you will lose 3G and HSPA+ service as AT&T's equivalents operate on a different and incompatible spectrum.
I would also assume that you would not receive OTA updates either.

Overseas, on a network that is compatible with regard to GSM/ UMTS frequencies. So the only way to get updates is to download them from forums like this one?

I don't know for absolute certain, but I'm 95% sure you wouldn't recieve OTA since it goes out over the network your phone is connected to.
You can usually snag the update from here, but unfortunately, a lot of people didn't run aLogcat to log the download and get the link. Including myself, though I'm trying now with my second device.

Another question, does anyone know if this device works on UMTS band I 2100 ( 2100/1900)? I really can't make up my mind because it's not clear on T mobile website. It says UMTS 1700/2100/AWS and this looks like it's referring only to UMTS IV

The phone is compatible with almost every gsm band the specs are:
GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
HSDPA/HSUPA 900 / 1700 / 2100
In the US most carriers are using GSM 850/1900 and 3G 1700/2100 you will only get OTA from T-mobile in the US if you are using their cellphone service or you can hope and wait for the update to show up here on XDA in the forum.

AWS is the data delivery method used only by Tmo in the US. So the 4G service may not work outside the US but according to the phone specs it states that it supports UMTS and GPRS/EDGE so it should support 3G UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ and gprs/edge for 2G everywhere. Ill test my HD (from England) when I get to new york in a day or so and see if I can get proper 3G speeds.
Todays smartphones are designed to be used worldwide with full service as much as possible.
AWS is just another name of UMTS band IV. This is the only UMTS band the MT4G supports, so you'll be able to use it for 3G on carriers that use this band. You can see the list of bands and operators that use them here:

Frequency bands differ for different technologies on the same phone. For example there are 2 versions of Nexus one one for ATT and one for T mobile although they work on GSM level because the support both GSM bands on T mobile and ATT but not the UMTS bands on both networks. UMTS and GSM frequencies are not necessarily the same for each network and most probably they won't be the same. In my country we licensed 3G services ( UMTS) on 2100 band or UMTS 1 . GSM on 900 and 1800 only.
Can someone provide me with the FCC id from the back of the phone ?
I tired to search for it on the web but I don't think what I found was the correct one.

I went to T-mobile store today, the guy was helpful and he printed out the official full technical specifications for the device that he pulled out and here what I got:
3G/UMTS Bands
Band I / UMTS2100 Yes
Band II / 1900 No
Band IV 1700/2100/AWS Yes
Band V/850 No
Band VII/ 900 No
The page was titled " Enablers" and listed specs for GSM and UMTS bands with their features. So I think this ends it for me, it does support both bands I and IV.

Good luck but I've taken my nexus one all over the planet... you'll get 3g in the countries listed above plus Japan (softbank only) but I haven't gotten 3g anywhere else....

@OP: have you gotten the MT4G to work with UMTS Band I frequencies?
I got the update by only using my friend's t-mobile sim card, I think I got it via wifi since he doesn't have data plan.

I am wondering if the unlocked international version of the Tab (GT-P1000) can be enabled for Tmobile 3G (USA) access, without loosing phone calling functionality? The international version supports ATT voice and 3G out of the box, but on Tmobile it only seems to support voice and 2G.
The goal is to have the international version (GT-P1000) on Tmobile with voice (which it supports out of the box), AND 3G internet access.
Any thoughts are welcome, please chime in. Thank you!

Not sure if this will help, but if you install Roto's Modem Switch you can switch between voice+edge and 3G, right now that's as close as those with the original T-Mobile tab can get it to work, i can attest to that since i am an owner.

The international Tab hardware does not support the 1700/2100 AWS band which is required for 3G on T-Mobile US, so this is not going to work.

Do we think it's a fact that the 3G band issue is a physical restriction and cannot be addressed via a firmware or software flash?

I am pretty certain that it's a physical restriction (i.e. Hardware), but even if it wasn't, the only known modem.bin that supports AWS is the T-Mobile US one, which is known to block voice regardless. If there were a modem.bin that supports both AWS and voice, you could just flash in on a TMo unit.

It's somewhere in between hardware and software - probably in the firmware for the radio amplifier.
The Samsung GSM Galaxy class devices use the same radio chipset from Infineon that is supposed to support all frequencies.
However, Samsung, in creating different device versions for the different regions and service providers has disabled the radio bands not used by their target customers (the service providers).
Thus while the Euro device supports the 1900 band usedby AT&T, it does not support the 850 band or the 1700/2100 band used by T-Mobile.
Nobody has yet found a way to bypass this restriction on either the Tab or the different Galaxy S phone variants which are similarly restricted.

Hi all, I'm wondering if I may trouble you with a quick question.
I recently bought a Galaxy S5 (Galaxy S5 G900F) in the hopes to have it future proof as I move to Canada next year and would like to have a solid phone for about two - three years. I'm based in Ireland at the moment and wondering can the phone be used in Canada without issue?
I was looking at a phone company (Koodo) who offer great rates and once I inputted my IMEI it stated my phone wouldn't work on their network.
Surely the S5 would work on any network throughout the globe? Last year my Note 3 worked perfectly in America and it was an international edition also.
Is this a hardware issue (radios) or software (were a simple flash of a different rom could fix)?
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Figured it out yet? Ironically the hardware is capable of supporting all GSM and LTE bands world wide. But Samsung endeavors to sell their phones for higher prices in more affluent countries. And carriers don't want to make it easy for you to jump ship and sign your phone up to another network. So they have artificial restrictions in the firmware and other measures e.g. region locking, SIM locks, to limit what you can do. They have to allow enough compatibility that you could usually roam when traveling. But not complete compatibility or you might buy a cheaper S5 from another country. Or change carriers willy nilly.

It appears to me that your phone supports all of the Fido bands. And most, but not all of the bands on other Canadian carriers. I don't believe that your phone will work at all on niche carriers Wind or Mobilicity.

Thank you very much for your reply. I figured it would be something to do with the radio.. Will check the bands for the network Koodoo, if it falls in ok and I can find a firmware to flash which hopefully should do the trick. Hell I might even just sell before I go, make it easier.

Koodo is a secondary brand of Telus.
They use 3G 850 CLR/1900 PCS
And 4G /LTE 1700/2100 (and possibly 700 in the future)
You are missing their 1700 LTE band, sometimes referred to as AWS. So you will have to find out how extensively they use that band and whether it is a sole frequency in any areas.
