SD card problem need help - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello everyone i hope someone can help i dont what happened but now at the top there is a SD icon with a red ? it says mounted read only can not get it to work the only thing i did was i use the tethering for my laptop nothing eles was new thanks for all and any help.

Ooh boy where to begain, lets start by recovering your data manually as the cause of it may depend on the quality of the card itself which ill cover after your data is safe. If you try to solve it now you may just lose all your data. Keep in mind changing base permission manually via chmod does not solve this problem as I have tried and very aware of it
Now there are 2 ways you can access the data. First is via SDCard reader and second is via device. Now keep in mind depending on the severity of the problem the card may not even be mounted at all in that case you can access it from /mnt/sdcard/. To copy and tansfer it you can use CP command in terminal but for you I suggest you use File Manager it will save you time if you don't like console. What you want to do now is copy data from /mnt/sdcard/ and paste it /data. You can make new dir (mkdir) inside "/data/" temporarily and then have it transferred there and then unmount the sdcard and put new SDCard and have it transferred from /data. Now depending on the size of your backup you may have to do it few times.
Once this is done as you have your data. Format the SDCard from computer with card reader thoroughly, if you can't then do it from device. If not then go in recovery and format and do force partition. Now once you have access to your card you need to verify why this has happened. Now make sure the SDCard is legit by testing (R+W+V) for data integrity, you can use H2TestW. If it passes you can count out bad cell which is physical defect. Now depending on the quality of the card it will also control how data is allocated and if it will be facing data corruption by erasing itself (Blank SDCard) or by corrupting the file allocation table and reading as UFS (Unsupported File System).
In that case you can still manually reconstruct the data structure as the data is not overwritten but you have to allocate the device to access the raw data. But that is not for you and not for faint hearted.

thanks so much for the info i should have said that i tried the card in my wifes mt4g and it works fine i can see the data if i plug the in the comp but i do have to plug it in after i tell it to remount then it works i dont know if that help and should i still go ahead and do what you said thanks so much for your help.

well just wanted to say i think i fixed it all i did is hooked phone to pc and copied eveything off the SD card and put it on pc then formated the sd card on the phone then put all back on its seems to to be working i wanted to say thanks to black shelf for his info thanks.

Once it's gone, it is gone. Unless it exists somewhere else, it is gone.
ouch, that really hurts... there should be a way to undelete from the phone's memory. if there is one, i hope you find it.
There is still hope...
Hi, don't just assume that once you've deleted it, it's gone. There is still hope for your data. You see, when you delete something it doesn't actually get removed, the OS just "hypnotizes" itself into forgetting the data is there. Over time the data will become overwritten (depending on how much you used the sdcard your pictures were on).
There are special programs designed to recover deleted files, I recommend Recuva by Piriform (same guys who make CCleaner).
http://www.piriform.com/recuva
Just point it to your sdcard and scan. Again, depending on how much you've used your device they may either be completely gone or easily recoverable.
Good luck

you could try one of the mem card recovery programs and connect in active sync mode, might see internal memory as a drive ? ...
worth a try !

I second knobbyhtccruise's suggestion. Dont use any apps that may write to your phone memory. Just try ActiveSync method and use this software i have attached below.
Unzip the file to desktop. Connect ur HD2 via AS.
Run Restoration.exe and in Drive see if you can access phone memory. Goodluck
No data recovery software can access the phone memory of HTC or else other smart phone etc
Can't be saved dude. No go dude. No go.

Try http://www.datarecovery.com/. It helped me. It's not free, but you can try if it finds your files for free. Does it find it, you have to buy it to be able to save the files. Worth a try! Good luck, man!
Firs of all, many thanks to all the respondents,
perhaps someone would be kind enough to help me enhance my understanding?
As far as I know a file system allocates space for files & directories, when it is told to delete something it does not do that but instead merely marks the space as available by setting a bit / flag on that entry. This being why it is imperative NOT to write to the file system in the case of an accidental deletion & a recovery program merely reverses the process to mark the space from available to unavailable & displays the entry again
in some expert hands even a hex editor can be used to undelete / recover data
to my limited knowledge both the internal memory & the sd card use a fat32 file system
given the above, I do not understand what is the difference & why data can be recovered from the sd card but not from the main memory. Perhaps someone more qualified can set me straight please?
A random thought - would there be any use setting up a dual boot to android & would that help / harm my case - thought being that there may be more tools available?
once again TIA
M
once a file is deleted, the space is marked as resuable. Therefore, stop using the device because every of your activity may be destorying (overwriting) your deleted data beyond recovery.
SD is recoverable because you can mount it to a PC using a card reader, or even using the HD2 directly. Then most software can read the storage and try to recover. Phone member is presented to the PC as a connected device and it may not be possible for other PC software to access it like a storage device. If you can find a tool that copies the whole 476MB (or whatever) memory to somewhere else (PC hard disk, SD card, any passive storage that is not a phone), then those software will probably to able to handle it.
here is a program that can undelete files from external and internal storage. good luck.

I assume it might help if he has NAND android, otherwise it won't.
did some searching and found two programs that may or may not help on WinMo
Wizcode Unformat Mobile
Wizcode Undelete Mobile
not sure if they can access phone storage. but you can try. hopefully, you haven't fiddled much with your phone since then. it's been about two months.
I believe Wizcode undelete mobile works on storage card only.

so I think the only hope is by sending it to a service center hoping they have tools to mount device memory as removable device, and tools to recover deleted files.
and next time, save your photos on your SD.
if you know anyone with a copy of your photos, now is the time to start calling friends.

Fryo I800 installation help!

Ok So I am here because I've posted in other places in these forums with no replies yet, So it would be better to create a thread specific to my problem.
I have an Omnia 2, thinking of acquiring the Fryo 2.2 OS, not specific about wether I want what version but here are the problems I come across before being able to install it.
1- plugging in my phone under Settings -> My storage will not show my storage on my computer, having the external SD option will show my 16GB SD card.
2- Backing up. How do I back up my storage if I can't see it on my computer? When I turn on active sync a blank storage appears other than my SD card (assuming its the internal storage) but the size seems rather small (167MB). I've been reading peoples' posts and I'm supposed to have around 2GB I believe, and either way the files I'm trying to put inside for the android OS don't seem to fit there.
3- Partitions? How can I set those up for both the internal and external storage? Is there a program or feature to do so? My SD card under properties says FAT-32 so I'm not sure on how to do it IF I need to.
4- Using a W7 computer, so that knocks off any ubuntu installations, and also link is broken for Almars Beta 1 file that I was thinking of using for an SD installation.
Any help would be appreciated, I've had this phone since 2009 and I'm really hoping I can come across some help to make it work since I do want to keep this phone for a bit longer before I spend more money on a different cellphone!
Thank you!
Try out the new CyanogenMod from the link below.

It has the SD Card auto installer, try it..
Back up data on your SD card first and then format your SD card within the phone and then use auto installer to install it.
As you said your computer wont detect the My Storage, try the steps below..
Transfer your data from My Storage to external SD Card, then connect your phone to computer using My Storage mode in settings.
Download Mini Tool partition wizard and format your My Storage (Mini tool partition will be able to see your My Storage even though your computer doesn't).
After format, your computer should be able to detect My Storage.
Now copy the downloaded android files to My Storage and run the auto installer as instructed in the ReadMe file inside the download package.
PS: Don't forget to backup the data on SD Card to your computer
Hope this helps
Ok so what you meant by taking things from my storage is going to file explorer and basically copying everything from the "my device" to the SD card?
Just want to make sure because if it doesent work then I haven't gotten anything backed up right.
Went to file explorer -> copied everything in the top folder which is application date, connMgr, doc and setttings, program files etc. is this all thats needed basically?
Thanks
P.S some of the things I tried taking like global.txt or exe couldn't be copied because of violations or some weird error, is it alright not to have those?
Update: My storage is still not revealed by the mini tool partition program, went under usb settings -> my storage and refreshed disk information, nothing shows up ugh it might be impossible for me to do this after all....
nobody can help me in regards to this? well then I guess a new cellphone is in order
grrrrr I should've gone with a iphone 3G or BB 9700 at the time instead...

I guess you will have to reflash the ROM again since your problem seems to be unsolvable. My suggestions is to flash a stock 6.5.3 ROM before you transfer the auto SD installer.

problem with new memory card

i got a new 8gb card for my phone today copy all the old stuff off the old one and put the new one in but having problems with it phone wont detect it correctly just saying preparing sd card testing for errors and thats it tried a few reformats and reinstalls of the os but still the same.
does the phone detect the empty sd-card?
try to create folder or smth like that on the empty sd-card in the phone
before format sd-card and put it in phone, try to detect empty one
(maybe restart phone and let it detect from new sd-card (empty one))
then create there a folder or just copy data on it and try again (dont know what you did until now maybe you already done smth like that then i don't know too atm)
or let the phone format the new sd-card that should normally work!
-> put new sd-card in
-> let phone format it
-> reboot
-> try to access sd-card and create a folder if you want or copy data on it
got it to work fine now but every time i try to transfer a large file via usb i get a read i/o error message on the computer then the phone wont detect the card again untill i delete this file
usb debugging is disabled
file size ? and what kind of system are you using?
both a 599mb and 634mb avi files both give me this read i/o error
my phones running froyobread v023b on stock kernal
did you try same with old sd-card ? (if it has more than 1gb you can try)
if you get same error it's not the roms fault
i use froyopro and i copy 1gb file atm but i think i dont get error...
can you post the error somehow? got a camera to make a photo or smth like that? or just write what it says
here is what i get
if you search for that error there are many ppl with those problems you could try to find a way to solve it buy using google
you can also try reboot your pc and try to copy data again sometimes that solves problems
also it could be that it's a error because of the cable you connect your phone to pc
(try out old sd-card and copy files if same problem exist) it's not because of the phone
can you copy smaller files to the sd-card?
thanks it seems to be behaving now just copied a few large files and its working correctly now to fill up some my my 8gb sandisk ultra fast
your hdd can also cause i/o erros when you try copy files so just don't think if it doesn't work the sd-card is not good.
causes can be:
HDD,cable, usb port, system error,or sd-card error,or sd-card reader in phone. software from phone and so on so it's hard to find where it the problem ...
mine did this too, but a format and a reset resolved the problem

Help with external sdcard

So I returned to stock via Odin 2 days ago. Thought everything was fine until last night. In a nut she'll I can't add, delete or copy files to the external sdcard. If I attempt to do it the system asks me to grant permissions , I click ok but there's nothing there to select (no external nor internal but I can write to internal)
I've tried formatting both from the phone and from my computer. It formats but I still can't write to it.
What's confusing is the OS is still able to transfer some data automatically like from the camera. So its definitely not a problem with the sdcard itself. And it is reading data just fine. Unfortunately I had to format so other than new pics there's nothing for it to read and I can't transfer anything to it.
Any ideas?

Recovering files from local memory

Hi All,
I have an S5 SM-G900P w/6.0.1
I keep my photos on my SDCard. Recently after taking some lengthy vids, I ran out of space and it shifted over to local storage.
I backed up both external and internal DCIM/camera folders to my local machine. Then copied that backup to another backup drive.
I normally parse through the pics to make sure everything is ok before I delete the stuff from my phone, but this last batch was too big to do that, so I only skimmed through.
After thinking the copies were successful, I went ahead and deleted the pictures from my phone. I deleted via Windows 10 while looking at the folders via usb connection.
Shortly after I discovered that any of the files that were on internal storage (and some on the SD Card) were corrupted during the transfer. Their file size was inflated to approx 5.2GB each (normally around 1500KB).
I was able to quickly recover any of the corrupted files on the SD card using Piriform's Recuva. (maker of cCleaner). I mounted the SDcard directly to the PC and didn't use the phone.
However, Recuva won't browse the phones internal storage when connected via USB. Their FAQ says it can only browse and recover from physically attached drives. (no mapped drives, which I tried by using a webserv)
I tried several recovery apps on my phone itself. Disk Digger, Dumpster, etc. They didn't find anything.
AFAIK, I can't mount the internal storage on the phone as a physical drive like we used to be able to do on older phones.
At this point, I'm not sure what else I can do. It's been a day now, so the phone might have already written over the space anyway. But I'm curious if there isn't any other ways to recover those files. I hate losing pics of my kids.

Can I assume, seeing that you used "Recuva" that you are running Microsoft on your PC???
If that be the case.... will take a little time , and a good size USB Stick. and hopefully, you have a port left for USB3.0 for the S5..
That said, you could set up Ubuntu on a USB Stick (making sure when doing so, you use the whole card, so changes can be made)
Then making sure your PC can boot from a USB Stick, Power that down, Restart PC, Booting into Ubuntu. then plug in phone. Mount the it, and you should be able to find everything you are missing. (that said, I do hope you were using the Stock Camera App, and mot something else.... if so, the files, might be bad from the start, I hope this is not the case).
hope this may help you
