Hey guys, I know there are many topics about "lagging" SGS. But I wanna show you these videos made by me. It's a comparison of my SGS to my sister's X10. I made these, because I can accept minor UI lag from time to time, I can accept non-instant apps opening, but what I cannot accept is why installing application via market took 10+ times longer on my SGS in compare to X10. Mail application - K9 is not usable. I just cannot wait several minutes to download 25 mails. Opening messages is a pain. Open the 4MB .ppt from attachment took like 5 minutes or more WTF. On the videos below I was connected to wifi. Everything is much worse while using mobile data, no matter what is the connection speed (which is pretty fast here).
Market
K9 Mail
Everything works fine and fast on my sister's X10 with 1.6 android. I am using stock 2.1 with no lagfix or tweaking. What I want to know - if this is that "lagging" which is this forum full of.
What about 2.2 users? Is it better on newest official ROM? Or is the lagfix only way to fix this? Is the lagfix capable of repair this at all?
Brilliant videos to show how bad the lag is!!
Wow, I'm amazed by how fast app installation is on the X10.
It shows how much the SGS's hardware was wasted by Samsung's inability to provide a decent firmware. A shame.
Nice video. You are making me regret buying a SGS I would have preferred not to know how good the other phones are.
Goes to show how samsungs incompetence has hampered this phone..

First and foremost, this so called "lag" is totaly related to writing media on the memory. As stated on another post, the main issue with SGS is that instead of using an internal flash drive, wich is faster but can't hold much data, Samsung went for more space. For the device to be as fast as others, they would need to put a flash, like 512Mb, to hold the OS and the system itself.
Combiened with that is the RFS file system, wich is "safer", long term speaking, for memory. I don't know what is "long term (5 years? 10 years?) but it is overpassed by the lagfixes (transforming the partitions to Ext#)
Im amazed at the difference on the market, I never thought the SGS is THIS slow!
That's the video I wanted to do for such a long time !!
But now that I see how it could be fast on an other phone I just want to get rid of mine !!
I have the OCLF installed ( first on 2.1 and now on JP6 2.2) and after few weeks I still have the same kind of lag ( long time to open mail and long time to install app ...)
Just wondering if its just my tab or just the tab in general, this thing is always freezing n just runs like its a frigin g1, slow! I have the sprint version, anyone else have the same probs?
Sent from my SPH-P100 using XDA App
sory to tell dude it's your tab, i gave up my ihone4 & ipad for my tab. it's one of the best devise i ever had, maybe omething is wrong with your tab take it back get an other one.
Got a Tab last night, and even after flashing to the latest ROM it is rather unreliable in terms of performance and lag. I've already experienced several complete lock ups which is more than my Desire has had in 6 months.
So I will be returning mine for a refund tomorrow. Think I'll wait for the v2 with 2.3 or Honeycomb.
Got mine loaded to the gills, and it zips along just fine, not a single lockup.
So there's no way to fix this? I can't take it back cause it wasn't brought new, I did a reset n started all over with it tho but I have these probs... I'm guess the stupid sprint activation thing has somethin to do with it but I can't get rid of it untill I root my device... there's gotta be a reason this thing is messed up?!

I sat in a sprint store playing with their tab for about an hour. I was blown away with the speed of it. If you are not finding the Tab peppy I would look into bringing it back.
I would also say that the sprint tab i was using was a much better experience than the ATT one I bought. I kept saying to myself something is not right here. Then I flashed it and all is good.
Mine was suffering from bad browser lag until I flashed it. I don't have a Sprint Tab though. Mine is T-Mobile. I'm running Roto-JMC. It's very smooth now!!!!
Hmm
i just watced a lagg fixed galaxy s phone on youtube run super super fast.
he said it was about 2700 quadrant score ( iknow its not a good method) i dont even get half of that and my tab is so much slower.
I am keeping it though i really cant see this not getting to the galaxy s smoothness level sometime within the next months, whats your thoughts? will it get as smooth, i mean why would it not? i cant even use flash in any of the browsers except youtube mobile, and i the old desire running hd flash!
it should be able to be soo much smoother with future firmware updates or hacks?
btw. Kindle app on this is like the best e reader ever! if u dont mind only 10 hour batterylife.
I have the Sprint version full stock, and I have no freezing or lagging.
Just a long shot here, but on my Evo I was having some lock-ups out of the blue, and when I finally connected it to my PC via USB, it told me that the SD card had errors. Ran scandisk, fixed the errors, and then everything was back to normal.
i have verizon version and its blazing FAST! however it did reboot a couple of times on me but i am sure its an app i have downloaded not the tab

My Tab runs fantastic. I also have a lag fixed SGS. A lag fix switches from Samsung's proprietary file system to an ext4 file system and therefore will not help general performance, it will namely help loading apps for the first time and saving. After that, you will not be able to see an improvement. This is also why lag fix methods increase the quadrant score.
If you are seeing ANY speed issues with the Tab, you should return it. If you bought it used, you should have got some kind of guarantee... they probably sold it because it was running slowly.
You guys really have to look at the software youre running on your tabs. Mine is running flawlessly and has been almost from day one.
Start by removing bloatware and unnecessary services. Flash to the latest supported firmware using Kies. Use firefox and Dolphin mini as your browsers. Turn on airplane mode + wifi to save battery. Look into a replacement launcher like adw ex or launcherpro. Get no lock to remove the lockscreen. Etc.
Android is all about user imput - if you dont customise it you will never feel its benefits over an ipad!
It's a good idea to try different task managers like the one in ASTRO i.e. and try to catch the faulty one. I found some issues in using the yahoo mail client.
Mean the faulty process that uses much processor time, in above post.
Hmm it is not like i havent done all of the above it is still not as smooth as a galaxy s phone. I really think there is some firmware difference since all danish tabs i have tryed run like this. Tryed 4 my own encluding. In Denmark people are selling tabs allover the place since many regular customers are disappointed. Got mine half price so i am still quiet content but it does lagg and with newest official firmware jj3 via kies. Flash in any browser except youtube mobile is not usable

My Tab is faster than my Galaxy S, has been from day one. My Galaxy S isn't slow, it's running a very fast Froyo rom. My Galaxy S phone is the fastest phone I've ever seen, but it's still not as fast as my Tab.
I haven't rooted my Tab or uninstalled any bloatware or disabled any services. If the Tab were laggy, I would have done all of those things. I haven't because I don't like to mess with what works.
My guess would be that your carrier has something installed that is slowing it down. I can't imagine what, I have tons installed and nothing has ever slowed it down.
That said, Don't use the stock browser, it can be laggy, especially on Flash heavy sites. Try the Miren browser and set Flash to "on demand".
Weird how some people have problems and some dont, I have the Epic also and it flys! But this damn tab is horrible and I too experience the browser lag, restarts, freezing, u name it! I saw that someone did mention they had alot of problems till they rooted and flashed it so if you could be so kindly to share info on what exactly you did it would be appreciated, especially cause others that have flashed didnt have the same outcome... If it dont work for me then its goin on ebay cus as of now this thing is just a paperweight...
T mobile flashed with a phone running fine .only some glithes from the wifi .only because my router is a bit far from me but otherwith running fine
i have instaled many app and many widget and its ok so far its only hungree for battery power
fine gadget and phone is defenetly a big plus

My Tab flies with no freezing... Rooted with z4 and use oclf. If i get lag in the Dolphin browser I try this trick I discovered on xda: Hold the power button to get the power off menu, then press the back button to exit that menu. Thats it. Browser will increase in speed and fluidity!

Answer to your first question:
Lag is only happening to your tab or your specific region (tab).
Solution:
Right here
Read through it quickly, bottom contains all the right info for you to flash your tab and get off of that HORRID stock firmware.
I bought this a few months back don't get me wrong its a excelebt device. But im finding it slow and anoying to the poiny i want to get rid of it, im fed up with how apps can run on there own without permission and slow the hell out of the tab and kill battery i fibd it silly how the default launcher widgets dobt fit the screen. Apps dont look good at times due to the screen resolution etc. Can someone convince me otherwise ps i do use other laubchers they just lag. Only way you get a lag free tab.is if you have no apps

Not sure why your lagging so badly my tab never lags maybe u got to much stuff installed u dont need id look at getting a task manager app and reducing the apps you have open at once.
I dont have loads of apps open i was trying to use.the one built in.go launcher i dont evan.have loads of apps installed my nexus has far more apps installed and its insane

What are you running? If stock then carrier had probably crippled it even with their junk ware. Suggest running overcome kratos, or stock non-carrier gingerbread-can find both in the dev section. They work very fast with no bad lag.

I'm running gingerbread stock, no kernals just plain stock.

Run the ROM/Kernel from Overcome and you will have your speed back.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1205990
Or we could send around 4 big blokes with various tablet devices to show you the error of your ways....
Overcome is good, but I prefer CyanogenMod, completely sans TouchWiz. Both are great, and you should definitely switch to one of them. You will gain a lot of performance and battery life back, for sure.
Might be a rogue app. I run the 'Fast Reboot' to dump stuff before and after a game, seems to help. The 2.3.3 update made things far smoother too.
Thanks for the replys cm put me right off i used it with my nexus i had constant reboots and a greenish screen animation bug

Whats "sans TouchWiz"
SANS means "Without (French)"
http://www.internetslang.com/SANS.asp
I'm running the old gingerbread prep rom that came packaged with the overcome rom. I had such great speed from this that I didn't even bother to move onto overcome.
Apart from the occasional stutter, everything is very smooth, particularly web browsing. This prep rom is just stock ginger with root, and it's almost perfect. All of the ginger builds are largely identical so I can't see how you could have ginger and bad lag unless you have an app bogging it down.
Have you tried a factory reset and started fresh?
Use Fast Reboot
its free on the market, it made my tab run whole lot faster than it was.
ofcourse after installing Kratos and overclocking to 1.3Ghz it runs a lot better, but i still use Fast Reboot. it simulates a restart without doing one, causing all processes to close and come back up.
very nice app.
you can buy the paid one for scheduling it to run at times when memory usage is too high
I dont like doing factory resets my uses the tab for them farm like money games and its anoying starting from scratch

It looks nice, but I expect it won't work on the P1000 (7") Tab.
Is it going to be worth installing ICS on Galaxy Tab??? give the hardware differences from lets say the Galaxy Tab plus, what possiable benifits would there be from Froyo original, Gingerbread ROM's, Honeycomb ROM's prior versions to the new ICS Ice Cream Sandwich BETA developement, I know what ICS brings to the table, but given having to deal with hardware limitation of original Galaxy Tab, what would be the biggest reason to have ICS on the GT other than just to have it? What apps or user needs could compel someone going thru this task to warrant the work involved?? What categories would be the most beneficial for example Graphics/Photo or File-Management or....
Any insight for people looking in to this project?
I've been running the alphas and betas on my galaxy s for like a week now, and I can't wait for it to run on my tab. I need WiFi and 3g on my tab, otherwise I'd be giving it a go already.
The benefits, well it's fun to play! I think it runs better than anything I've tried on my phone, and think it'll be great on this.
Tmob Galaxy Tab 7
Hi there,
i got alpha2 of the ICS build running on my tmob tab. Works great tbh cept for no wifi and no edge data yet but Angel_666 says he's got data running now and wifi soon.
Someone put up bc4329.ko wifi driver supposedly compiled for our tab and ics and i tried to adb push it to the tab and then insmod it in but got
~ # insmod /data/bcm4329.ko
insmod /data/bcm4329.ko
insmod: can't insert '/data/bcm4329.ko': invalid module format
so hopefully they've fixed that
Also i couldnt seem to successfully edit build.prop within the zip file. every time i did the zip would not install.
finally gave up and just adb pulled the build.prop down off the tab, edited it, pushed it back and rebooted
ICS looks great in the 160dpi mode. Hope the wifi drivers are up sometime this week.
Battery life seems ok so far...will keep more track.
thanks
meh
Good question
One we need to hear more about!
It's worth it...I got alpha 2 on my t-mobile..as soon as WiFi is up...it will be better...battery life is great I got 4 days and 6 hours before my tablet died

Alpha 4
Well Alpha 4 was up last night and i snagged it and applied the root and wifi fixes and everything seems to be working. The terminal app they had included did not work and crashed whenever i tried to "install" it from the market. Also superuser shows up under not install in the my apps section. edit: now it seems the thread doesnt have alpha 4 listed?? wth
Otherwise wifi is working fine.
I cant seem to find adobe flash player in the market now either just AIR...is there no flash for ICS?
if you are running the build and seem to be stuck in portrait mode and want to switch to landscape, open the camera app and it will switch to landscape then hit home again and bingo - stuck in landscape mode now.
Hello,
It is not ready for daily operations, but looks very promising.
For now it is wise to stick with alpha3 with patches and do some testing.
I took a look at the thread over the development section. i'll give it a try here in a bit I think, just to test it out. if the bugs and kinks can get worked out, such as the camera, then I think it will pretty cool. that's just my $0.02 though.
My experiences with ICS on VZW tab.
Graphic Acceleration not working or not smooth (UI, Browser) but good enough to play Sudoku or Angry Birds without lag.
WiFi slow on establishing connection but fine after connection.
Orientation not working correctly.
Some font and UI resizing issues, some launcher features missing, miscellaneous minor issues.
[And I think GPS is not working, but I do not use the tab GPS anyway]
[Camera is not working, but no big issue for me]
Other than that, the AOSP build is working wonderfully. I can play music, video in portrait, read email and sync with MS exchange (I think that's all I do). And of course, get a sneak peek at the new Android OS and the SDK!

The ICS issue aren't due to the hardware not being able to do ICS stuff but more so lack of binary files needed to support said hardware. Given that the Nexus S OTA is out now we should start to see some progress. Don't ever expect a 100% working rom though.

ICS is great, the UI is much better, and it´s optimized for Tablets
It is definitely worth to install ICS on galaxy tab as it is design for tablet, been using it for days and find that the alpha build is quite stable except for some minor bugs but it is still usable.
It is still in Alpha stage but the rom will get better in the next release

Definitely worth it, if only to have a Tablet-oriented OS on the Tablet. Using ICS on the Galaxy Tab is such a hugely pleasurable experience. My wife has an iPhone but loves ICS. So much so that she's getting my 2nd Galaxy Tab when I've finished playing with ICS on it (i.e. when we get a version that's good enough as a Daily Driver) and we'll fund another data SIM for it.

Would you recommend I buy this? Or the Note 2? Will this be ever updated to JB?
I recommend it!
I had a 6210 before this which is very similar in specs as the I815, but with a smaller and lower resolution screen. The $100 I spent basically to upgrade was worth it so far; better screen, thinner and lighter with the option to use VZs network.
In another thread I think it's been confirmed there's no Jelly Bean coming for the 7.7, and ICS is "available" but it takes some work apparently. Nothing too bad if you're savvy enough to be posting on this site in the first place.
I find the Note/Note 2 of no use for myself. I wanted something portable, but still big enough that I could watch some video or read on. 10" tablet was way too big for me, the 7.7 is perfect for my uses. The Note2 is a weird device IMO: too big to be a phone and too small to be a decent tablet. It works for people though, apparently filling the old niche that Pocket PCs used to reside. If I were given one, I guess I wouldn't sell it but I'd have to use a Bluetooth headset always.
I'd ask yourself what do you want out of the device more. Do you want to mainly use it as a tablet or a phone? For me the "everything in one" device just doesn't exist so I have both and just use WiFi Tether to get my tablet 4G access. I have T-Mobile for my phone but I wanted the better screen and the IR blaster both and the option to use VZ's prepaid later with the tablet.
I guess it just depends on how big a phone you want to hold up to your face.
The word on here , like WangChung 81 says, is that it will never be 'officially' upgraded to JB..
I have the 6800 and am running the Brazillian ICS here in the US on AT&T's sim card.
Very fast H+ speeds and can do it all! at the same time..
Talk, Txt, mms, email, surf, d/l...etc I have no problem with holding it to my face and use the speaker phone most of the time.
But Im used to comments and ridicule from friends as I got the International Note a year ago.. so I welcome the attention.
Im almost 60 and I like the large screen for BIG viewing.
Im also using Go Launcher HD for pad
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2045163
it gives me larger tiles on the home screen.... & I need that.
Also use Big Font app. and Opera browser
If you want a big phone with the best screen going... this is the one...
Everyone has an opionion as too big a phone.. but mine is that I like it and use it alot more than my Note 1.
Good luck deciding
It is the best tablet with the worst perspectives to have JB. Try to keep it in hand and then decide. Good luck!

May i join? Well TW is for me uses more RAM and CPU and its kind of a battery eater even just for a small percentage... Apex Pro is more battery, ram and cpu friendly... and smoother compared to TW... also it has Tablet Mode for our Tab 7.7, i use this and also Nova Prime, its a smooth experience for me on my Tab 7.7:good:
TW eats up more RAM, that's bad for multitasking. It also lags all the time, especially on switching homescreens and going through the App Drawer. Just try out the free version. You'll notice it's smoother and if you have any task manager, notice the RAM usage much lower too. I use Go Task Manager.
When I was using TW, I hardly let anyone borrow my tab, that it might lag and people would say, sh-**(%-/#!!! Android is full of lag. Now that I am running Apex, I let them use it all the time.
