[Q] Derp! I dropped my Aria! - HTC Aria General

The digitizer cracked. Almost perfect straight line just below the soft keys, and just above the trackpad, and the bottom left corner was pretty nasty looking. It worked for about a week and stopped. I had it all apart, and no connections are loose. The actual digitizer seems to be intact, but the class is missing entirely below the soft keys (it didn't stay together during disassembly). I was going to replace the digitizer, and eventually upgrade to an Atrix. I'm stuck on my junker Samsung jack in the meantime.
Anyways, my question is, is the digitizer not working because that bit of glass is missing? I can attach pictures later if you guys would like. I'm concerned about putting money into this phone if I can't know for sure if it's going to work when I'm done. I have a feeling that the problem is bigger than just the bottom of the glass being cracked/missing, because the portion of the glass that is actually touch sensitive is totally intact. On the other hand, is it possible that it isn't working because the digitizer depends on the entirety of the glass being there (since the glass is an insulator) to output the correct resistance values? If somebody with more knowledge on this could help, that'd be great. I used to occasionally get the touchscreen to work a few minutes at a time, but I now get no response.
I've done all kinds of searching for more specific answers with no luck.
Thanks for your help!

I am in the same boat bud. I cracked my screen pretty bad and just dont want to dump money into this little thing when there are some sick phones coming out this year. My has a ton of cracks all through the screen and it works perfect still, but I also have all the glass intact, for the most part anyway. I would have to guess that its the missing glass, but I am far from a pro so...yeah. Last I checked the aria digitizers were kinda steep in price, have you found any "deals"? Good luck to you sir.

I ordered my digitizer from wholesalegadgetparts.com they're reliable and have fast shipping. The installation can be a bit tricky and usually leaves you with a malfunctioning proximity sensor if you're not careful. Let me know if this helped or if you need assistance.

Well, out of curiosity, I fired up the phone tonight, and surprise surprise, it worked. Looks like the proximity sensor is shot though. When I take the phone aay from my ear, the screen doesn't turn back on, and I had to pull the battery to hang up. I'm going to try and work some magic and see if I can get an upgrade to an Atrix or Inspire next week, and I'll report back. Thanks for the help guys.

mine broke too
had the same problem - had to pull battery to get it to turn off - just wouldnt work.
I ordered a replacement - tried to replace it myself
couldnt quite get the glass to fit back nice an snuggly - and couldnt quite get it right .
ended up just buying a new one -
If your contract is almost over i would try to hold out for a new phone - so many nice new ones coming out...
although I love the little size of the aria

Cracked Screen with Distorted Picture

Well, I woke up this morning to a cracked screen on my phone. I'm not sure how it happened, it may have been stepped on because it was on the floor but that itsn't the point.
The glass appears to be fine and it recognizes all touch inputs so I'm thinking the digitizer is okay. The picture has a line with "blackness" around so I'm thinking that the LCD is broken. Can anyone confirm this and point me in the right directions for repair? I need to find a replacement part and instructions on how to complete it.
Thank you very much,
-Pissed off G1 owner
Well, I went ahead and ordered an LCD screen off of eBay and a week later it was here.
Three hours, some cursing about not having the right screwdriver, some frightened moments that I might have broken something and she works like a charm.
Screen looks fantastic and the phone appears to be working 100%. To anyone thinking about pulling apart their G1, make sure you have the right screwdrivers as it will make the job 100 time easier.

Cracked screen - screen protector

Hi all, I cracked the screen on my HD2 a few days ago and have been eagerly reading the reports of how to replace the digitiser, etc. I'm working up the courage (and getting the tools) to do it, but in the meantime the digitiser and screen are perfectly functional, if a little bit unsightly. I thought I'd get hold of a screen protector in the meantime so I don't end up with bits of glass in my fngers, etc. Any recommendations of a form fitting protector (or form fitting case) that would fit the bill? Ideally it would cover the bezel around the buttons too, because one corner of it is quite chipped. The pics on ebay are kind of hard to tell from. Any advice much appreciated!
I might be too late as you mentioned that you already getting the tools to fix it yourself. There are specialty repair shops that fix screens, I heard they are not too expensive. I don't know the exact price, but someone with a broken nexus one got his phone fixed this way. Do you mind telling how you cracked your screen, was it your negligence or is it too fragile?
I'm not looking for info about how to repair - I've read those threads. I'm interested in the best temporary fix for the meantime.
The cracked screen is largely due to negligence... dropped it outside. Woulda been nice if the phone was a little more sturdy, but can't expect much better. And thank God it still works just fine as far as I can tell. Gonna be more careful now...

[Q] I cracked my digitizer....hard to replace?

So I was pretty careless and dropped my N1 in work, landing perfectly on it's screen It still functions perfectly and the AMOLED screen hasn't been damaged, simply the digitizer. I've already ordered a new one with all the tools necessary to replace it, but I'm yet to find any definitive guide on replacing the N1 digitizer.
I came across thread #751923 (Can't post links as I'm new) which seems really helpful but a guide with pictures/video would be awesome. There's a 45 step youtube vid on how to replace it as well but the quality/clarity isn't great. I'm sure I can use both of these to replace it just fine, It just seems a little daunting.
Basically I'm looking for consolation along the lines of 'It's damn easy to fix' Any love for a fellow N1-er?
It is easy to fix. Two tips: don't use metal spatulas to pry the plastic under the battery off and gently wiggle and push the motherboard out only after disconnecting all the little connectors on it.
Im also waiting on my digitizer. I'm going to folllow these 2 guides.

Have done it and you actually found better tear-downs and tutorials. Use youtube as well. The videos help because they show the techniques as well. Hardest part i would have to say is sliding the motherboard out the bottom under the metal separator. I think it was great and taught me a lot about my phone. The thing you have to watch out for is dust and fingerprints under the screen. Once it's on...it's on, anything underneath is stuck lol. make sure it's all clean and you won't have any annoyances like dust particles like i have.
I did it, mostly successful. I damaged the cable to the trackball, so be careful at that step, otherwise nothing difficult, just takes an hour or so.
Cheers for the info and advice guys, should hopefully get my replacement digitizer tomorrow so I'll keep this thread updated with the outcome
I have replaced my digitizer. It cost me $45.00. It was challenging but not impossible. The hardest thing is not tearing any of the ribbons when dissasembling. It was a successful replacement. The only gripe I had was the digitizer I bought did not come with the adhesive to glue the digitizer to the frame. Make sure you have a way to attach the screen to the frame before you begin the process. Other than that it should be easy as long as you take your time.

I replaced mine.. it took a solid hour or so, just be very careful not to tear any of the ribbon cables.. everything is super small and delicate.
I now get lots of dust in the corners of my screen because i didn't seal the new digitizer properly, but its not a huge deal to me.
replacing the digitizer is easy... its taking apart, and putting the rest back together that sucks. just make sure you know what length screw goes in what hole... very important. take notes as you disassemble.

haha reminds me of when I took my laptop apart to re apply thermalpaste. I ended up with 7 extra screws >.< But the thing was together and has been running fine for the last 6 months so O.O
I did it, not too bad if you go slow and deliberately. I also have dust under my screen now. I sort of wish I would have just sent it to HTC but the money saved is worth a little dust.
A useful tip for disassembling is to cut out a paper template the same shape as your N1 and push the screws through it in positions corresponding to the screw holes in your N1. Its much easier to figure out where they all go when you come to reassembling it, just dont knock your template and screws on the floor .

That's a great idea, rob. I always think whenever I take apart a phone that I should have a video camera handy to record what I'm doing so I can play it in reverse when I'm putting it back together
For $115 you can send your phone back to HTC and have a QUALIFIED technician replace your screen.
Yes, it's a little more but you don't have to worry about messing anything else up and you're getting back your phone without any installation flaws.
Well I eventually got my digitizer this morning. It took until I had everything taken apart to realise they had sent me a compatible but ill fitting digitizer. It doesn't even have the appropriate buttons (it did in the selling image) at the bottom. At this point everything works fine but it doesn't look perfect. I guess it'll have to do, thanks for the advice guys

Wow thats cheap, I just got quoted for around $300US to fix my phones screen.. not including labor.. argh
Does anyone know if HTC in america repair phones from the other side of the world even though they were purchased from google's store?
I just sent my phone into HTC to be repaired for a cracked screen expecting it to be $115 and was pleasantly surprised to find that it would only be $55 including shipping! HTC was also extremely quick to get back with me for the quote. I sent the phone out Tuesday at 4pm and they have looked at it and quoted me the repair cost by Wednesday at 2 pm.
I recently cracked my digitalizer as well.
I called HTC 2 times without giving any information about myself before calling a 3rd time to do the actual swap.
I was quoted at $115 for me to send in my N1, wait a week without a phone, and have them replace the digitalizer, before shipping it back.
I then further inquired and found out they have a Swap program where they mail you a new(refurbished, but perfect) phone, and a FedEx label, which they still quoted me $115 to fix the screen, and a possible $275 if they needed to replace the logicboard, but they would get a quote back to me with all the things they would need to replace. It would require a $529 charge to my card, incase i didnt send the phone back at all.
I mentioned that my camera was broken, as well as my trackball was loose, and he said the quote would include this as well.
I called back a 3rd time, requested a swap phone, and had one 2 days later.
i mailed my phone into HTC, and two days later i had my quote.
I paid $55 after it was said and done, and have a new (refurbished) phone
I was rooted, unlocked, and running Kang-O-Rama 1.0 when i shipped the phone in. I didnt bother to fix that.

replacement Mytouch 4G Screen digitizer issues

Hey all,
I replaced my girlfriends shattered digitizer a couple of weeks ago. Everything went great. I attempted to reuse the adhesive that was originally on the phone but alot of it was not any good.
So after putting it back together using what i could for the adhesive, the phone booted up and worked fine. But after sometime of using it my girlfriend started to complain about it not responding to touch correctly. Random times when touched it would act like she was touching somewhere completely different. Or it would act like it wasn't even being touched. To fix that issue you have to put it to sleep and then reactivate.
A good example would be if you were on the phone dial pad and trying to press 9 it would press 2 or 5 or 1. Or sometimes it would just not activate anything. Sometimes it would even "press" something without it ever being touched.
I did replace my old iphone digitizer and had the same issue. Not sure how to fix it. My only other thing i can think of is maybe getting some adhesive and applying. But i want to see if anyone has had this same issue or if they have a fix?
We've reset the phone to factory settings, rebooted. I have no more ideas.
Also where cna i get mytouch 4g adhesive?
Bump....anyone?

This thread might help you out. Someone in there also mentioned that you can use the same adhesive used on iphones, or 3M adhesive(whatever that is..)
Hope this helps you out a bit.

Hi there, this is what I use to re-adhere digitizers when I repair iPhone digitizers and MyTouch 4G digitizers: http://www.ebay.com/itm/37051618015...X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_1118wt_1141
Make sure that all connections inside the phone are properly connected, the issue with your girlfriend hitting a button and the touch not responding correctly usually indicates a defective digitizer or that a connection came loose or maybe moisture got underneath which will cause the digitizer to fail.
I hope this helps !!
I have the same issue. I replace one digitizer for a customer and she complained of certain spots not responding.
I replaced one on my phone and it does not respond in some places. Like i wouldnt work when its on horizontal mode.
I would draw a straight line on a drawing app and it goes down fine and get crooked towards the bottom area. almost like a lightening symbol.
The digitizer i got is not original. One of my original digitzer is acting up too. Tried it on different phones and its still the same.
I also tried using the adhesive tapes.
This is too much of a problem.. Wonder what the issue is...
It'd be ncie if we could get some more advice here. Or even some more reports of this issue.
@krnchonnom: Where did you purchase the digitizer? I picked mine up for repairs universe. Wonder if they got a bad batch.
I replaced my Digitizer this past week and I'm now expeirencing the same thing... Has anyone proven that using new adhesive solves the problem? This is the adhesive I used when replacing mine, http://www.repairsuniverse.com/adhesive-strips-for-touch-screens.html
Hey I had the touchdcreen problem after the OTA update from T-Mobile a couple of weeks ago. Now for the last two days it disappeared. I think it was software related...
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
How could it be software related when I never had a problem with my old digitizer before and after I shattered it...
I took apart my phone once again today and spent about 2 hours sizing and cutting new adhesive strips and it appears that I have relieved the issue so that it only happens now and again, thus allowing some use out of the phone but now the digitizer is stuck to the LCD and making part of my screen looks like a piece of glass on top of some liquid ready to go under a microscope... I'll put up a pic tomorrow.
I'm just about to the point where I might just purchase a digi+LCD assembly instead.
Sooo. .. you guys replaced the digitizer and still no go, but cannot fathom it may be software related... May not be but mine was when stupid T-Mobile said it was hardware. I would type a certain letter yet it would type three others making it impossible to text. Just sharing my experience. Hope you guys figure it out.

here is what it looks like
problem solved. My adhesive tape was too thin. I doubled the adhesive up and now I'm good, except for the intermittent unresponsiveness. I have to lock the screen and unlock it again to get it to work again...
I'm about to tear back into my wife's MT4G for this same issue. She cracked the screen a couple months back and had to use a MT3G for a while!
I bought several busted MT4G's off of ebay to tear down before I took hers apart. It really helped knowing where there are snaps and screws and such before you do the real thing.

[Q] Replace Digitizer Now Won't Turn On

Hi. I purchased an Evo 4G from some dude on Craigslist. I verified the ESN was clean via checkesnforfree.com and I was well aware it had a cracked digitizer. I purchased a new one via ebay and it came in today. I watched YouTube videos over and over as well as followed the steps on ifixit.com and thought I did it right. That is until I turned it on and it vibrates and then the screen flashes white briefly and then that's it. It remains dark.
Any ideas as to whether it is a faulty digitizer? I have checked, re-checked and even re-checked to ensure that the cables was set in snugly and that the latches were latched.
Again, the phone was working just fine prior to me replacing the digitizer. It was dim but it responded to the touch and all buttons seemed to function normalls including the camera and speakers.
Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated. Feel free to email me as well.
Thanks in advance.
Take the battery out, replace it, does the phone turn on while holding volume - ?
Having trouble with AOSP? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1295702
That sounds more like the LCD is bad. If you say the screen was dim, that's the LCD, not the digitizer.
I had that same problem, but it turned out the ribbon for the lcd was not fully inserted. So I pushed it in more and it turned on.. Hope this helps.

replacing digitizer, I bent a couple of hair wires on one of the brackets!!
I bought the evo 4g a while back for 400 bucks, within a few weeks I dropped the phone cracking the digitizer. Done a ton of research on how to fix it, then ordered a new one plus all the tools to fix it on Amazon. while I was putting it back together, I was super careful returning them to their brackets, however, a couple of the tiny little hair sized wires on the base bracket bent crossing over some of the others, I tried to straighten them out but of course this didn't work I suppose, when I got it all back together, the phone will not turn back on. I have looked in millions of online places on what I can do but found nothing, I have also called the Sprint repair store who basically laughed at me and said I threw away 400 bucks. the only thing I can think of aside from tossing my money in the trash, is hope and pray that I can find someone with some extra brackets and hope and pray I can somehow replace it without screwing it up again. Please PLEase PLEASE, if anyone can help me at ALL I would be so very greatful!!!
