I have the Droid 2, running the latest Fission ROM. I've tried adding .nomedia files to a few folders that I dont want to show up in the gallery. However when I do this, the gallery will scan for new media and then crash. And after that it will immediately close itself every time I try to open it. I've tried mounting, unmounting, rebooting, clearing cashes, etc. Simply will not open. So I tried deleting the new .nomedia file and it still would not open. I tried all of the above and nothing seemed to fix it. The only thing that fixed it was restoring from a complete backup from a week or two ago. Does anyone know what is causing this and how to fix it? I really don't need pics from all my apps cashes showing up in my gallery, like-wise I cant just hide the folders cause they are needed by the apps.

FIXED!!! SEE END OF POST.
Using the latest RC30 mod from JesusFreke, everything works swell (cache to sd card, autorotate, multitouch, etc).
However I can't preview anything but .txt files in gmail! If I try to preview a .doc or .pdf file it crashes (Gmail has stopped unexpectedly) every time.
Not sure what is causing it, I believe it should be calling HTML Viewer and then maybe doesn't find it? I can view things with HTML Viewer though (txt files through ASTRO, etc).
I recently installed Linda File Manager as it adds a plugin to the Browser that enables the downloading of any content, however I've removed this app (and ASTRO) but haven't seen any results. I also reset the "defaults" on pretty much all involved apps.... At the moment I can't view pdfs through gmail and I really need to for work.
Any ideas?
Thanks
hey did you find a fix for this?? im experiencing the same exact thing....
concerning pdfs I had the same experience...
I noticed that my test license of jetcet pdf had expired. I uninstalled, reinstalled...
and it works again.
I am on JF 1.4.1 RC8
I fixed the problem by loading a nandroid backup from the previous day. then i opened gmail and when it asked me what default viewer i would like to use I chose HTML viewer
although it gave me the option of setting ASTRO instead. what i dont get is, why didn't the problem go away after i reset all programs to default and uninstalled ASTRO? mmaybe i should have restarted or something.
im on a stock rc 30 so im guessing id have to get root with one of JFs modded roms before i can do that nandroid? the jetcet program solved the pdf issue but im still force closing when trying to preview docs....html viewer opens independently but not through gmail...really annoying!
i would suggest clearing your defaults for gmail.... also root gives you nandroid yes but yu also need the sdk to flaah the backups. use mybackup as well!
no defaults are set....i guess i have to root to get it to work...
My problem came back! I uninstalled ASTRO, rebooted, and it is still here. No defaults to clear.
Using JF's version of RC33 now.
Also: you don't need root to reset defaults, but if you know how to do it via CLI, tell me! I can't fix it and I am afraid that if I go back to my old backup, update to RC33, it will come back!
getting really frustrated with this...im on a stock rc33 now and i still cant preview docs with html viewer through gmail....i have no idea what to do...i've reset the defaults and nothing?? does anyone have any other possible solutions?
thanks.
Still having the same problem.... I thought it was astro but it wasn't... what do we do?
Yeah, I don't even have Astro installed and it's having this problem. I have Linda File Manager and UnZip installed and that's about all I see that might be interfering...
Not only can I not view PDFs through Gmail, but I can't view any attachments at all.
I hope we find a fix for this...
Hey maybe it's Linda! I did have that installed a while back. I'm gonna do a nandroid backup and the reflash and see what happens.
Well I reflashed (finally got time) and the problem persists--- although I didn't install Linda. Astro is installed, but since you don't have it installed, it must be something else.
Very frustrating; it takes an hour to rebuild my phone (I could just re-flash the backup, but still) and I really want to see this problem resolved.
OKAY I FOUND WHAT CAUSES THE CRASH!!!!
It is an app called download crutch/download crutch lite.
It is a useful app, lets you download files from the browser that it might not recognize (ie zip files).
Anyways uninstall it, then delete the gmail storage/gmail settings from the app uninstaller--- then search for a .doc or .pdf file.
worked for me.
if you DO NOT have this app installed, then I have no idea. This worked for me on a clean install!!!
thanks
Since upgrading to 4.3, snapchat has not been able to load videos. it just keeps refreshing at "tap to load" i also noticed that when attempting to record video, the screen freezes until you lift your finger, then snapchat treats it like a picture.. so i cannot record or send videos either.
anyone else encounter this? fyi, i also installed the moto x camera and am using the banks gapps with photosphere add on. this problem is persistent in two different jss 4.3 aosp roms. i tried clearing app data, uninstalling, reinstall, no change.
titanium backup snapchat
im going to bump this issue because i have some thoughts on what might be the issue..
titanium restore.. there was an incompatibility with 4.3 when 4.3 was released. of course i had flashed 4.3 prior to titanium app update and used it to restore snapchat. this is when the no video problem started.
my hypothesis is this.. snapchat needs to store your videos locally on the phone before viewing, then deletes it after viewing. do you think that when titanium restored the app, it restored it with incorrect internal storage mapping? if snapchat can't access internal storage, that would explain why it cant load or record videos.
now, ive uninstalled and reinstalled snapchat before with no luck.. might that be because snapchat leaves bits and pieces of itself in the phone therefore never really has a fresh install?
if this is the case, how can i go about hunting down every last bit of snapchat?

I'm able to view videos fine, but I'm having the same problem recording videos. One thing I've noticed, if I flash a new rom [complete wipe] I can record videos fine for a few hours, but after that it starts acting up again [recording, but then only saving the first frame and sending only a picture.]
Also, I should note I'm on a Galaxy S3, noticed this issue on Cyanogenmod [4.2+] and ParanoidAndroid [4.2+], haven't tried stock. I'll reply here if I figure it out, let me know if you have any results too!

I did find a solution. I uninstalled Snapchat then went into twrp recovery and deleted the folder associated with it located at data/media/android/data/*snapchat*
Reboot and reinstall Snapchat. That folder will be recreated... Correctly.. With what I believe to be the right permissions.
If you want to try something else first try the app "fix permissions" and run it on Snapchat. Maybe that will fix the permissions of the folder.
Lastly there is a zip you can flash that fixes all permissions on your internal storage to proactively fix this issue for any other app. Search for fix internal storage permissions. The thread should come up.

Thanks. I boot to TWRP 2.6.x, File Manager, use chmod on snapchat folder and subfolders, reboot and the video record works. This was on Supernexus 4.3 on T-Mobile Galaxy S2 T989.

I'm a little slow, what is chmod? I tried finding the snapchat folder to delete after unistall, but could not. I'm flashing a new rom now coincidentally so I'm hoping snapchat will just work after that... otherwise I might try this fix permissions app. I would really like to be able to send video snaps. Seems like it should be an easy enough thing....
Bump
Also having this problem. I installed Cyanogenmod 10.2 on my GS3, used titanium backup. Ended up reverting to my nandroid backup a few hours later, and now my snapchat cannot record videos, look at videos, OR see "My Story" posts (if i click on them, it does a quick load, but doesn't open)
I read through this thread, but cannot figure out how to delete the SnapChat folder in recovery mode. I tried deleting it in the TWRP file manager, and it SAYS it deleted it, but it is still there. Any help please?
same problem

So i bought a new Galaxy S4 19505 and i like everything about this phone till i found a major problem. Any picture or video on the phone doesn't show up in the stock gallery, only the pictures or videos taken by the camera application would show up. I told myself that this isn't a big issue and i installed quickpic which is somehow better than the stock gallery and works perfectly. However today i discovered that my phone doesn't detect any ringtones installed or any alarm tones! the same goes for the notification sounds, the three lists are just empty!
I tried installing several media scan applications from the playstore, i understand that such applications manually trigger the Android Media Scanner to run so it would detect new media files but unfortunately all of those applications fail on startup.
Now i suppose that my media scanner file is corrupted, so is there anyway i could replace it?
Thanks in advance.

Assuming you have correctly diagnosed the problem (which I have no idea) then what you are describing is a corrupted system file.
As long as it's only a system file that is corrupted and not the storage card itself, you should be able to fix this by using Odin to reflash your stock firmware. This will wipe your phone clean and restore everything fresh. And I mean everything. So if you have photos or music on their you want to keep, put it on an external SD card or move it to a PC or something.
This will wipe out the corrupted system file and replace it with a good one.
You can also root the device and install custom software, which will basically do the same thing but give you a completely different operating system. (Well...somewhat different. It'll still be Android. Just a different flavor.)
If the internal storage is physically damaged, then there is nothing you can do.
Hi guys, since a month I have problems with my camera-app. I'm using CM13 nightlies, just reflashed from yesterday with Open GApps Nano (to not overwrite Snap Camera for a try). With WhatsApp I can take photos without a problem but for holidys the quality is too bad . I also tried Camera MX without success. When I take a picture it shows the preview in Snap Camera without problem (the small icon bottom left). If I want to navigate to Gallery it just shows grey or sometimes even no file is created. I've searched a lot but nothing helped. I also tried to revert to last build where it worked but only got bootloops. I also completely wiped my phone and removed sd card, no success.
Does anyone have a solution to my problem?
Bestregards
Tried it with nightly from today, no success. Also video recording force closes. No advice?
So after again a lot of reading, could my camera work again if i update baseband/modem/bootloader with latest from sammobile? Mine are really outdated from june 2015 (so lollipop version..)
If I update them I dont have to root etc, right?
best regards
So.. I tried OpenCamera again and set the save location to my download-filter (internal), this works. With my default Camera I can only save to internal, without choosing a dir so this doesnt work. Is there a possibility to fix the rights of DCIM so that the camera apps are allowed to write there?
[Edit:]
Seems like the permissions are the same from both folders. will try to delete the folder and let the app recreate it or possibly try sd-card as location..
I solved this now... I've installed latest CM13 nightly with camera fix https://review.cyanogenmod.org/#/c/156891, made a full wipe (except my internal user data) and clean install. Unfortunately this did'nt solve my problem. I also installed latest bootloader and modem, no success, too.
I think the solution was to change permissions of dcim to 777 via recovery... that's why I couldn't delete pictures or take pictures but it worked with open camera on another file path...
Hi,
Since a couple of weeks now every time an app tries to invoke the "files" app to allow picking a file or selecting a destination I see the files app appearing for a fraction of a second, but then seems to die or get terminated.
Didn't change anything since a while on my op2, so far I haven't figured out what happened at a certain point to cause this.
Anyone else ran into this problem? Any idea how to fix it? I tried to clear data and cache of the files app, force stop, rebooting, restoring a backup wit titanium backup. No change.
Rooted op2 with latest oxygen os (3.0.2)
ok I sort of "solved" the problem by disabling the "files" app from TB -- so now I'm given the choice of picking another file manager.
For me it was the Box app that somehow made my Files Manager app crash. I removed it and it is back to functional.
