After almost 3 months of neglecting my dead streak, And Dell refusing to take it back to fix it (will explain). MY STREAK IS ALIVE!
It broke around Christmas because of memory corruption (After installing Froyo OTA), I hear that is a known bug with these devices.
I was of-course sure that Dell would take it in, and replace or fix it, but no...
Somehow the Service-Tag on my device is not in their system (God knows why), and they needed a purchase note to accept the repair. However, I did not have this paper, since I live in Norway, and purchased via Ebay from a company named "KickMobiles Ltd."
I assumed they had the papers, but trying to call them results in a "This number is not in use" BS.
So I said to my self, if the £@$! warranty is not good for anything anyways, I'll try to fix the sucker myself.
Got online, found some youtube vids of dissasembling the Streak. Got out and purchased a T4 screwdriver, opened the phone, and extracted the SDcard.
Now I am lucky to have an Ubuntu Laptop which I use for compiling and developing in Chromium OS, so I stuck the card in the SD slot, and examined the partitions of the card.
Luckily there was an easy structure I could replicate in another MicroSD card I had lying around, and copied the 2 .gz files that was on the partition.
put the new card in, assembled the phone, Started in recovery mode the first time, did a factory reset, and the phone booted! I'm extatic!
My £550 brick is finally useful again!
Have a great day!

Good for you. Back to business...
i would have been sick about it too glad you got i goin again
When you copied the gzips over to the new card, was it off the old card or manually from another source?
amazing job! makes me think about ripping mine open.
What symptoms did your Streak exhibit before you fixed it. Im wondering if your fix would work on my Streak which boots up to the Dell logo only. I get a blank black screen when booting into fastboot mode and the pc doesnt see the device in this state so Im sort of stuck. I did put the internal SD card in an Ubuntu laptop and it all looked OK to me but I know very little about android or Linux. Any more details as tothe commands to format the new SD card and where the .gz files were on the old card would be much appreciated.
Please tell us that while you did this, you put in a larger capacity/faster internal MicroSD Card....lol
that's why i love Dell Streak, cause if there's something wrong with internal memory and you out of warranty - you can change internal memory by yourself!!!
I copied the files to my ubuntu laptop from the original sd card directly. That part of the sd card was luckily not corrupt. Don't really know if it was necessary, but better safe than sorry I guess
The issue I had, was that the phone did not at all, either hanging on dell logo, or rebooting on dell logo constantly.
The reason I know my memory was corrupt is: booting into fastboot mode, typing *#301# in the num-pad box, and selecting test 10.
I could have inserted a bigger sd card if I wanted to, but to be on the safe-side I didn't

If you can't get into fastboot I don't see how you can fix it yourself. But if your warrant is not covering you anymore, give it a shot
The two files were in the root of the 256mb ext2 partition
I still have the files if you want to copy them
Good luck

Thanks Godo_PPL. I think you are right, ive pretty much given up trying to revive my Streak. I think my only option will be to look for a broken screen streak on ebay and combine the two, or possibly send it to someone who knows how to JTAG it.
Anyone know of someone reputable that does JTAG repairs?
Anyways, I'm glad to see you revived yours and its great that you posted as it will help out others i'm sure.

I've seen a few threads regarding this issue but they're all old and this seemed to be more of a problem with HW rev 002.
I recently had my SD card fail, as in not readable. Upon removing my case from the EVO to get at the SD card, I discovered that the glass screen is lifting off the phone in the lower left corner and won't stay in place no matter how hard I press on it. It's bad too, not just a little raised edge that lets some light out, but it's lifted enough where I slide a business card underneath the glass.
I don't have equipment protection through Sprint, and in fact I don't want a refurbished phone; I like this specific phone, if only there was a way to glue the glass back down.
How do I go about getting it fixed? Has anyone gone through HTC's warranty service to get it repaired? Is it something I can do myself? I didn't purchase through Sprint so please don't tell me to take it into a Sprint store, unless they honor HTC's 1 year warranty and take care of all the work.
Now regarding the other issue with the SD card, it's not the old software problem that was causing SD errors. The SD card is broken completely; even putting in my computer's card reader, it can't be read at all. I put a blank 2GB SD card back in the EVO and it's working just fine, so I know I have a dead card. Will HTC cover this under their warranty? They should, but I'm wondering if anyone has successfully gotten a faulty card replaced.
As far as i know, you could take it through sprint and they should be able to honor htc's warranty as they are the ones selling it. That is from my experiences, at least.
The sdcard failure could be a windows thing (mounting sdcard) or an app leaving corrupt data.. Overall it could be corrupt data from some source on the sdcard.. Using the custom recovery screen with a rooted phone, partition the sdcard. Set all values to 0 and the rest fat32. It wont partition your sdcard, it will just reformat it. Copy all data to your computer before you partition it, it will wipe the card. This has fixed my sdcard failure quite a few times. (Iv had an android phone for awhile and have had it rooted since owning).
If you really want to you can do this..
The screen separating you can get a hair dryer and blow hot air out, warm the glass and press it down reglueing it. It works for many.
If all fails, take it to sprint and use your warranty.

I'm not sure if I'm understanding you correctly; I'm unable to copy any data to my computer as Windows, Linux (Ubuntu 10.04), or OSX don't recognize that a card is inserted. I just accepted that the data is gone (which included some nice pictures from a recent vacation).
I'll try using the recovery to partition it and see if that works. Otherwise, I may take my chances and see if I can get a replacement 8GB card from HTC/Sprint through the warranty.
hi
i have my streak for a week, the 2nd day i got it i turned it off and went to the +/-vol + power screen to do a factory reset but i changed my mind and rebooted phone again, after that the 16GB card wasn't being detected anymore and even formating it didn't bring it to life again. In windows sometimes it showed up as a 30MB card but i couldn't even format it, some error about bad blocks.
So i used a 8GB card during the week and yesterday i bought a class 4 16GB card, it was working fine untill this morning when i tried to do update of the os, i went to the same screen but forgot to rename the file to update.pkg so i rebooted the phone again to rename it, but again when it came onto the os, same thing, it detects the card as blank but it can't format it... so i have now another broken sd card...
i did a factory reset while using the 8GB card so i dun think the problem is just cause of going to the black update.pkg thing screen...
anybody has had any 16GB faulty card?
what do u guys think? my streak hates 16GB cards and is faulty? or i am the proud owner of 2 faulty 16GB in a row (a class 2 and a class 4, both sandisk)?
My streak came with 16 gig card. Had no issues with it so far. I've put DJ STEVES Rom on as well.
btw, on both ocasions i had the phone connected to the usb cable and to the computer... could that be a cause?
maybe i'll just go buy another 16GB microsd card and play around with it to see if it happens again!
update: tested the card now with the program "active partition recovery" and it gives me an errors saying "bad signature in sector 0 on 86h" ... dunno what it means tho
ok, been trying a bunch of bad blocks recovery programs, mbr fix programs, etc, none works so i guess the card is unrecoverable and is really physically damaged...
just 2 questions before i decide if i buy a new card or send the phone back to shop (it'll hurt having to wait 2 or 3 weeks for a replacement streak)
i was only just using the cards inside the phone, and it even worked well as a usb storage device in windows when i connected the mobile on usb, only after i went to the recovery screen did this happened, (the 1st card failed after i went to the fastboot screen now that i remember correctly) do you think that any of these actions could have damaged the card?
and is it even possible for a normal streak to even damage the card beyond repair just by rebooting and trying to flash an update?
if that were the case, i guess loads of ppl would have same problem as me ...
other than that the mobile works flawlessly, hence my reluctance to send it back, plus the fact that it worked fine during this week with an 8GB card... but then again .. what are the odds of 2 cards failing one after the other in similar circunstances... sigh...

I feel your pain man. I just got mine yesterday from my local best buy. Within the first 6 hours it shut down randomly while idle. Had to connect it to a power supply and then reboot it to get it started again. On top of that, after the random shutdowns, the phone wouldn't recognize the sd card. It came up on error in the notifications. It gave the option to reformat it right in the streak but when you clicked on reformat...nothing happened. Could write to the card at all. No pictures, music...nothing. So I returned it the same day I bought it and exchanged it for another.
My replacement streak has been perfect (besides my noob experiment in flashing steve's froyo)!
I'm pretty sure it was a hardware issue. It sounds like you got a faulty streak as well. My advice would be to send it back...ask for expedited shipping or whatever it takes to get it back asap. These things are too expensive for them not to work as promised.
Good luck bro!
Try here http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter/ & see if you can reformat the cards
worth a try
Hello all i have a really strange problem. My Trophy is 1 month old, today it restarted itself alone and gave me the message that my SD Card is not working right and i need to replace it. I hate HTC for not making the slot accesable.
Now it's very complex to use the warranty, because i am from Bulgaria, the phone is bought from Germany, from ebay and on and on ...
Is there a way to test if the problem is the actual SD Card. If i am sure of that i will replace the lame thing on my own. Do someone from you have / had a similar problem ?
Thanks all.
Well, you could remove the SD Card from the phone (as described on the forums) and format the SD Card with a Nokia Symbian phone (E71 or else) and then test the card in a cardreader in your pc.
To be honest; I would just replace the SD Card. It isn't so much work and the cards are relatively cheap. The only other option seems to be trying to claim your warranty - but that might be difficult as you mentioned.
If you are tech savy and confindent, just open it up and drop a new 32 GB card in there yourself. We got plenty of forums posts around here, with how to open it up or even what types of cards to purchase.
If not, even though it may be a pain with the warranty based on what you told us, just send it over to HTC.
I am confident and i know i can do it. It's not a problem to open an replace. I am a little bit concern about the actual problem. If , and it's not something impossible , the card is just dead, this will be good. It's a common thing SD cards to fail. But if i void the warranty and the actual problem is in the mainboard itself, this will be a problem.
Probably only HTC has the ability to run diagnostics and test out if its the SD card or something else... but you will only know once you open it up.
I feel for your decision mate, g'luck.
Have you tried performing a hard Reset?
(Hold both volume buttons and switch the phone on)
I sure did. The first time it helped for about 20 mins. Than the card was gone again. The bootloader is reporting it as a SanDisk 61mb class 0 at the moment.
So i will open the phone, the warranty thing is not going to happen. Way to complicated, sadly.
One thing to ask. Because in the card replacing thread in the forum, after you put the the new card you must hard reset from the phone settings - My phone is hard reseted at the moment but it wont boot without a proper card. So i cannot pass the Error message. Do you thing that this is not going to be a problem, as the phone needs to be set right after that screen? I thing a the new card wont be a problem if it's properly detected ?
This weekend I was driving along and my CoPilot stopped working. Then I noticed that a couple of other apps weren't working and that the camera said it wouldn't take photo's until I inserted the SD card. I've had an 8GB card in there for the last 18 months.
Taking the card out of the phone and putting it in the PC does nothing. The PC at first says the card needs formatting but if you say yes it just says, insert a card.
I took some pictures at a friends Stag Party and I really need to get these pics off the card. I don't care about anything else.
I've tried a few of these "recover your images from a corrupted or formatted card" programs but they all require the card to be visible to the PC for them to work.
Has anyone get any ideas? Please help me
You could try a differnt card reader/different pc and hope that it works then, but tbo if its borked then with paying lots for data recovery, I'd say your out of luck
Sadly, I think you might be right. Looks like that card has gone to silicone heaven to be with all the calculators.

I would try every usb plug you have on your computer. i had the same problem and i kept at it. it took me several days to finally get it to work & to be honest im not sure why/how it did but i was thankful none the less.
i used this program & like i said i just kept trying. what worked 4 me was i held the card in the computer but only half way which the computer then was able to see the card. if you format the card you will lose everything on it so if you want pics off it & you format it you wont be able 2 recover them.

Thanks for the advice I'll give it a shot.
I thought at least if I could get it formatted then I could use some picture recovery software to get the pics back. It's so frustrating because there are only about 10 pics that I'm even bothered about. Everything else it backed up
hopefully that program will let you see that card, it did with mine eventhough though computer wouldnt. odd i know. i wouldnt apply or mess around to much with that program if you dont know what your doing because you can make it more difficult to regain your images. i gave the link 4 version 5 but i used version 6. i couldnt find it earlier 2 post, sorry. they do have a data recovery program that i used as well but ill have to hunt it down 1st & then i'll post the link.
i bought a hacked 16gb memory stick off ebay (!%$#@&$) that became corrupted and i was able to recover some of my files using the programs below. hope this will help you out.
MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition 6.0
MiniTool Power Data Recovery
Thanks a lot man. I'd managed to find those from your first link. In fact, Partition Wizard actually suggests the 2nd program if the first one doesn't find anything
I've run Partition Wizard against it. It took all night after starting it at about 9pm it finished at 8am this morning. It thought my 8GB card was a 2TB drive but hey, at least it could see something which is more than any other tool.
I didn't find anything using that one but I'm going to try the Power Data Recovery tonight. Fingers crossed.
Hi all,
I am on my 4th faulty Streak in quick succession and need some advice.
I keep buying refurbished Streak from ebay that have the same problem.
The 1st time I boot them up they get to the unlock screen then I get the three capacitive button flashing and they go into restart loops. The symptoms are as follows:
1)Restart loop
2)Remove/replace battery and turn on
3)Stuck on Dell logo with screen at full brightness.
4)Even if remove/replace battery and turn on stuck on 3)
5)Need to leave battery out for 30 mins to stop 4) although pretty much straight away goes back into 1) within 5 mins.
The phone is a factory unlocked refurb running Android 2.2 although any further info I cannot give you as the thing turns off before I can access any menus This happens with or without the sim/SD card in or removed. The phone has not been modded in anyway and I have not installed any apps or messed around with any setting.
I have done hours of research on this and other Streak websites and the best I can find is removing the internal memory card for a new one (although I don't have the tools for this).
If anybody has any advice I would be very happy as this flawed, massive phone is giving me sleepless nights.
I do have a 90 warranty with the phone, so I only lose the postage fee (although after 4 returns this would stand at £28!) if I decide to cut my losses. Even so, I really want this phone to work and its almost becoming an obsession to have one working at least for a little while!
One last thing, I have been on the Orange San Francisco/ZTE Blade band wagon since the thing was released. This ostensibly crappy £100 Chinese Non-brand phone has had countless versions of Android thrown at it, been dropped, brought back from the dead and is still performing perfectly a year later. Its a unacceptable that Dell couldn't make a phone even half as reliable as the Blade for four times the cost.
Sounds to me like a software issue, not hardware.
You sure you are not loading anything on your streak?
Maybe you can do a factory reset and then allow it to boot up. Here is how. Power up the streak then when you see the logo hold down both volume button. Next select to do a factory reset.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Hi alperin1. Cheers for the reply.
I have tried a both volume buttons and power button factory restart and it has no effect.
As mentioned, I've not done anything with the phone apart from putting the battery in, putting the sim card in, inserting the sd and then turning on.
On one of the many pervious faulty Streaks I have been sent I did the OTA 2.2.2 update. This made no difference (in fact, on one of the streaks I tried this and in restarted before the update was complete leaving the phone with a blank screen).
I have also tried cooling the phone in the fridge to make sure its not an over heating issue. This also makes no difference and the phone restarts.
Wonder if you can check whether it's the internal sd card causing the problem before attempting to disassemble? Maybe move /data mountpoint somewhere else or making the init "blind" about the data partition? Just an idea. Sounds like quite some work though.
Hello,
i had your exact problem, stuck on Dell logo ..... UK ebay seller and refurbished Dell Streak .... i discovered that my Streak does not had the internal SD cards !!!!! Was removed by someone during the refurbished process !
So i inserted a new 8Gb microSD card in the internal slot and all was OK.
To replace the internal memory you ave 2 options :
A) disassemble the Dell Streak ( you can find some guide in the forums )
B) cut , using a cutter , a small plastic tab inside the battery compartment to gain access to the internal slot ( search Youtube for "Dell Streak Upgrade internal sd card slot to 4GB class 10" )
I followed the option B) and in 5 minutes i had a working Streak !
Ciao.
Hi Miciobigio,
No internal SD Card!? Is it even possible for the Phone to work without the card?
I though the OS resided on this and so it would be impossible to boot?
I have ordered the tools to open the Streak and change the SD Card (I don't want to cut holes in the thing incase the SD Card isn't the problem and it needs to go back (again).
Just out of interest, what was the name of the seller you purchased the Streak off?
Regards
Hello ,
the ebay seller was "electronic_world" from UK.
My Streak arrived with OS 1.6 and booted fine but i could not download anything from the market so i decided to upgrade to 2.2 and the Streak ( after the ugrading process via the SD card not via OTA ) was blocked on the Dell Logo screen , when i discovered that it had no internal memory i was VERY surprised !!
The first Streak they send me do not rechearged the battery.
The second had no camera button ! Just a hole in the chassis.
The third unit had no internal memory !!!!!
I was lucky to fix the third streak they sent me thanks to that youTube video , there is no risk and it will be invisible ; opening the Streak is more risky and is possible to leave marks on the chassis .
Good luck.
Bloody hell!
I bought my first 3 from Electronics World.
The first one worked perfectly well, except it would charge either.
2nd and third had the flashing lights reboot problem
I was always able to download from the market though so maybe the SD Card was present but faulty (I read a few threads from other sources detailing dead internal sd's)
I got tired of Electronic_World sending me faulty Streaks. When I emailed them to tell them about the third faulty Streak they pretty much blamed me for breaking them. They claimed that they got hardly any Streak returns, although your anecdotal evidence and their ebay feedback would suggest otherwise...
Tried Bentham for this Streak. I though "a different seller won't send me another knacked Streak!!". Looks like they did...
I really appreciate your info by the way. One way or another I want to get this bloody slab to work!
bloody hell, i got my dell from the same ebay seller, and it was doing the SAME thing ! !
pissed me off, the communication with them is absolutely awful ! I hate them with all my heart and I wish they run out of bisuness and go bankruptcy!
I hate people doing this! Thats why good sellers are having problems!
anyways, got the 2nd dell, replaced.. this one looks fine |-(
I was close to return it and buy HTC again..
