Does anyone know how to improve battery life on stock 2.2? - Epic 4G General

Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

Well its the same way on di18. Stop omadrm from running. Toggle airplane mode after bootup to keep tws down, keep screen brightness down, use wifi if available, don't have alot of apps set to sync. Also a big saver in froyo is you can turn 3g off.

What do you mean apps set to sync? And how would you shut off the app syncing?

2.2 battery life
After I did the update.zip to 2.2 my battery life was horrid.
Since then I have removed startup auditor which blocked the DRM service from starting and my battery life has doubled and is now great. In 2.1 preventing all DRM increaded my battery life. Not sure what was causing the issue in 2.2 but things are fine now.
I also do the airplane mode toggle on startup.

To be honest I haven't killed DRM yet, and I've had pretty good battery life. A lot better than when I was on 2.1 and on the Epic Experience kernel. I do the airplane mode toggle, cause TWS was killing my battery. It was about 50% TWS when I didn't do the toggle.

I agree. I am fully stock with nothing blocked and right now as I type I have about a quarter of the battery left going on 59 hours. This its light use with 2.5 hours of screen on time. A few calls, texting, xda, market checks and music playing. I could not do that on 2.1
I forgot to mention that wifi and gps has been enabled the entire time.

I have seen on here people saying they have had their phone on for 59 hours, 48, 36 ect. My question is how much of this time are you actually using the phone and how much of this time is overnight while you and the phone sleep. These numbers seem outrageous to me. I had the hero before this and never have I ever gotten even close to this. My phone was fully charged at 8:03 lat night and has been off the charger for 13 plus hours and is at 75%. Only about 1 1/2 hours have I actually used the phone and this with bluetoothe on. It went from 100 to 89 over night doing nothing with BT, wifi, and gps off.

Like I said this is light use. The screen has been on for 2 hours and 40 minutes. And I haven't been awake for 62 hours so some of this time is sleep time. It has been to sleep for two nights so about 16 hours. I have done some texting, web, phone calls, xda forums, market checks and music. My battery low notification has gone off and I am now at 62 hours. But my point is even with light use on DI18 I could not get close to that number. So to me EB13 is much better on battery. Although I think Bluetooth is hosed. When I was using my bluetooth it was draining much much faster and was way worse then DI18 on battery.

Maybe BT is my problem. I use it about 95% of the time. Thanks for responding

Wifi being enabled actually reduces battery usage if you are connected to a wifi network.

How do you turn 3g off without turning WiFi or 4g on?

SprintAndroidExtension
The single thing I have done that seems to have most affected battery life is to remove SprintAndroidExtension. I just moved the apk from '/system/app' to '/system/app.disabled'.
Spare Parts battery history was showing that my phone was running nearly 80% of the time before this, and 15-20% of the time after, though my testing hasn't exactly been rigorous. I'd be curious to see if others see the same results.

Wow, the vibrant's battery.

I just switched from the G2, and I don't seem to be getting as good of a battery life. I just went down from 50 percent to 4 percent in 3 hours. Is this normal?
I don't think my phone is sleeping when the screen off. I'm kind of new to android, so excuse me asking, but how do you check if you phone is not sleeping and draining battery while idle? Is there an application or something to check?
One more thing, I just got the new update yesterday. I heard that it's not good to use a task killer, but I'm now using the built in task manager to close apps before I lock my phone seems to be helping with battery life. What are you opinions on this?
Check the battery thread, life seems to vary along among the Vibrants. A lot are reporting 11-15 hours of use before needing a charge.
I read that it's good to put Wifi on never sleep (if you're on Wifi) and use a black wallpaper
Interesting, how do I go about changing the wifi to never sleep? I can't find it in the settings!

It is hidden pretty well. Haha. Menu > settings > wireless and network > wifi settings > menu key > advanced > sleep policy
I would change it to never sleep when plugged in. not just never sleep ever.

If you change WiFi to never sleep, it eats battery like crazy (at least for me, I'm bought with no data, and could barely last a day from when I woke up to going to sleep). With WiFi art to never sleep when charging, I only drain around 40% in an awake day (from when wake up to going to sleep).
Also, when I set WiFi to never sleep, my cell standby usage skyrockets.

Extend battery life
Couple of things I have noticed with this phone
1. Get an app Task manager or similar type apps. There are a bunch of them in the store and here. This will allow you at one click to see what is on in programs and better manage that.
2. Go to the Development section here and read the Bionix 1.9 Thread. It explains how to recondition the battery. Even if your battery is new it is good information understanding how the phone views the battery.
3. If I am out of range or do not need, I stop the wifi and bluetooth. In the menu you can set the settings alot of ways, so you just have to experiment on this. (In home screen, hit lower left button and go to settings)
4. I use my email and phone ALL day (min 10hrs) and typically, I get 15-17 hr of use before it hits 10%
5. Finally, once you are comfortable with the phone, you can load a custom ROM from the Development section. The developers here are very through and Do squeeze the most out of the phone.
Good luck and you will love the phone as I do.

1 - terrible advice - esp with JI6 having one built in (long press home).
2 - This is also in the General sticky
5 - try bionix 1.9.0 (or 1 if you want alt lock screens) and try JACs oc/uv - great battery life so far.
On average use I get close to 24 hours out of a charge using mostly WiFi and enabling no-sleep option, running Bionix 1.9.1 with stock kernel with JI6 modem. I'm also running LauncherPro Plus with facebook widget set to auto-refresh every 5 minutes, the most frequent setting for Google sync, and NoLED notification. I think that is very reasonable.
p.s. I do not use task manager since the operating system is supposed to manage the apps on its own.

I use an app from the market called Y5 (free) to automatically shut down wifi if I'm in an area without it and back on if I'm in an area with it.
Works well for me.
My vibrant is less 23% after being off the charger for 4 hrs. One of those hours was me driving without using it.
Something is wrong. Dunno if it's the update, but something is lilling it FAST - wifi ang gps off the entire time...

I use the living hell out of my Vibrant, and usually it lasts for about 4-5 hours. This being during playing games with brightness maxed, or streaming music over 3G and/or Wi-fi.
If I have a day where I am not doing the above, and just using my phone for emial and the facebook and gmail synching, I easily get over 10 hours before I hit 20%.
All in all I am quite happy with it's battery life. I have just learned to leave my phone on the charger till full charge after streaming music drains it to <20%.
I really should put MP3's on it and test how much that drains the battery compared to streaming.
Either way, I get better performance on battery and memory management then my old (work supplied) BB Bold.
My G2 definitely has more battery life than my Vibrant. That said, once you apply the above mentioned tweaks and especially with JAC's OC/UV kernel, and setcpu set at 200-1000 at conservative, the Vibrant battery life improves quite a bit. Still, its not as good as my G2. But not that bad either..
Keep in mind that the G2 doesn't have to power a billboard sized SAMOLED screen either.
Other than that flash on of Sombionix's ROMs with either of the new kernels and then recondition.
I get pretty good battery life because I don't have 3G in my area so I keep it forced to edge and I don't use bluetooth ever and wifi stays off unless i need it.

People, recondition the battery. It's easy.
Charge it to 100%, keep it plugged in and reboot to recovery, clear the battery stats, drain it all the way, then charge it back to 100% again.
You can start in the morning before work/school and finish at the end of the day. I've never had an issue with battery life on this phone. I can play 6 continuous hours of video/games on this thing and still have battery left.

The only way you could have that on a stock battery is have the phone off and battery pulled out for 34 hours.

keep an eye on your TWS. This has been a huge issue for me, and keeps draining the life out of the battery. Only solution so far seems to be the ariplane mode toggle work around.

if you all want better battery life then disable your data network ...the way to do this is hold down the power button ...just like you are turning your phone off, you will see the data network. hit that button..it will disable your internet constantly running in the back ground and also will disable notifications...you can turn it on at your discression when you want to check your email, internet, or anything pertaining to data network...but trust me this will give you alot more battery life..also you can install setcpu and clock it to run lower when your phone is charging, not in use , or even when you are using your phone...this also helps substantually...good luck guys

Very nice suggestions I'd also like to add that using Wifi will use a LOT less battery then 3G probably 80% of the time. At work I have poor reception so leaving 3G on will kill my battery, however WiFi it's not uncommon I leave work after 10 hours unplugged with only 20-25% of the battery used! Make sure to set the wifi sleep policy to never if you go this route, that way it never goes back to 3G even when sleeping.
Turning data off completely and using the phone only lightly all day at work (a few text messages) (10 hours unplugged) i've left work with 88% percent battery remaining
Battery life has improved greatly. I turn off background data, stop the Omadrmblablabla service, no live backgrounds, but it is full color. With moderate use I can see 10 hours and still have 40% before I go to bed.
My battery life has been greatly increased too. The battery indicator seems much more accurate too. I did the factory reset several times, then wiped and used the samsung installer.

I wish I could be as lucky as you. This is by far my biggest complaint with eb13. I have tried flashing multiple times to no avail. How did you update? odin, samsung exe, update zip, or ota?
I did an odin flash, and my battery is much better as well. On 2.1 stock I would usually get about 16 hrs with my usage. Now, with the same usage on EB13, I can get about 36hrs (charging every other night).
I did the zip update first, and my battery was awful and only lasted for 4 hours. But since the odin flash, everything is great!

Don't install any apps but what thee phone comes with. And use the phone for 2 days. Then you will notice rgat index outer does last longer.

exactly. If it does fix it (seems sporadic at best), it will not stay applied after a reboot.

TWS = time without signal. Airplane mode resets the radio on the device and somehow fixes it (albeit, temporarily). I read somewhere on here people believe it has something to do with the fact that, for some reason, the phone is looking for a gsm signal as well as cdma, and since this is not a gsm phone, it obviously can't find a gsm signal. The constant searching for gsm is causing a drain on the battery. This happens in areas with full sprint coverage, like my house. For whatever reason re-setting the radio forces it to stay on cdma mode only. I think i read someone saying something along the lines of it being a problem because this is was an update created for devices across the board, ie, for both cdma and gsm handsets. Its just a bug that needs addressed. Some people have it, some don't -- which is even more frustrating!
If you are not experiencing this problem, please tell me what method you used to update. I have only tried Odin (and update zip once), so I will try the samsung exe to see if it does anything.

Some KB5 Tweaks I've Noticed

-MUCH improved battery life..55% left with about 23 hours after unplugging..wifi was on and played a good amount of angry birds (light to moderate use otherwise)
-brought back notification bar brightness adjustment thingy
-charges MUCH faster as well
-wifi doesn't crash
-no noticeable performance changes
-media scanning seems to be faster

You can get 24+ hours just on overstock + trigger.
Beleive it or not, once when I left to work, I had 9% battery and I was like !!, so i turned off wifi, data, sync. and sed phone just to check for msgs etc and maybe 1 call.
When I got back home after ~9 hrs, I had 5% battery and I was pretty amazed. True story, take it or leave it.

The problem with people posting their drain times is that light use for you and me might be considered heavy use by the OP. With that said, if you properly want to tell people how good your battery is, post your screen on time. At least that gives an idea as to how good your battery is in comparison to something we can also measure.

With that said, if you properly want to tell people how good your battery is, post your screen on time. At least that gives an idea as to how good your battery is in comparison to something we can also measure.

the DEFAULT settings for battery usage is the most inaccurate.
Use another app from the market, that shows like a line graph of when you charged etc.
I have MIUI, so i know my battery life is horrible.
What other improvements...
Other than battery life what other improvements did this update bring. When I updated my wife's phone to 2.2 she said it was crap. Visual voice mail did not work properly which was a big deal to her.
Did this update have any other improvements?
Well not really other than the OP. No real overall performance changes. Just about as fast or slow as froyo depending on what you think about it.

If you literally do nothing on it (other than leave it on), a fairly new battery will drain slower than that. Mine will last a couple days if all I do is turn the screen on to check the time.
After I put 2.2 on my phone I noticed that vvm kept running in the background and was draining the battery. Was this fixed?

Is avatar not playing for anyone else? I fixed it for stock KA6 by deleting a file/symlink. Now with KB5 it will not play. How can I fix it again? Thanks.

I have to concur with the posting, I forgot to plug in my phone yesterday so when I got up this morning it had been 27 hours since I last plugged in and I was at 56% left according to my battery widget running Bi-Winning with overstock version1.4, I got to say this much improved battery life surprised me. i do not have my screen @ 45% I run @ 60% bright
I get faster data transfer as well. So this is all good...... Too bad Samsung took 8 Months to figure out how to code a decent modem......

Battery life's non to fancy

I thought with a battery this big there wouldn't be much of an issue but if you push this phone it won't last the day.
I have screen set to auto, manual sync, data off, wifi off, gps off and here's how I got on today.
6am Of charger and 5mins checking email twitter then wifi off
7 hrs radio and music player,
Then through out the course of the evening I checked emails etc again for a max of 15 mins.
Phone turned of at 8pm so thats 14hrs but that was 14hrs with everything turned off and not really using the phone, my Desire S I used the same way and at this stage of the evening it still had well over a 3rd of battery left almost half. I installed Juice Defender yesterday and it made no difference.
Is this type of battery life normal for this phone?
A lot of battery related threads are there pal,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
Just keep in mind that if you are getting around 5/5½ hours screen on time then you are fine, just fine. Forget about days. And JD will do no good if it doesn't do any bad.
Regards.
Keep in mind I am using Ninphetamine 2.0.2 kernel with villain rom 2.4.2, juicedefender, and did a proper, full battery calibration.
Today I played about 2h of games, listened to music for about 3h, and then did random things like checking email, downloading apps from market etc. I have only Wifi and autorotation always enabled. It's been about 12 hours since I unplugged it, and I am at 83% of my battery life. Looks like I won't have to charge it for 4-5 days using it regularly.

Post Screen Shot of your battery Usage graph, Display On time.
That stats you posted is NOT POSSIBLE.

slugger, from this and your other posts, it seems you don't like this phone much. At all.
Why keep it? Curious.

That's about as good as I've managed, but that's with it basically being still, only sending a few text messages. Don't think it'd have managed that long with music/game playing added in.

When a geek is inlove with a device, its pretty hard to let it go despite the flaw. Im on the same boat right now.

That's simply not true.
with very low usage i achieved 4 days but with high usage as stated it will last 1-2 days max
9 hours.
Thats it.

If he had mobile data and the phone turned off and just on wifi that's doable.
Listening to music with the screen off is a pretty low consumption scenario, cos the cpu will hit 200mhz and the dps' will be doing most of the work.
And considering that the screen and the mobile data connection are #1 and #2 users of power!
Doable but still maybe a slight exaggeration.
The phone has a very low idle draw though, so when its just sitting there not doing anything in deep sleep, you know you wont find your battery dead which is good.
Do people really not have access to chargers in a 12-24hr period? I don't get this whole batt life issue. Yeah, they suck, but seriously, who can't plug their phone in for 20-30mins a couple times a day?
oh and I deft call BS on not having to charge for four days. Never going to happen. Even if you dont touch your phone at all for four days. Still won't happen.

Then stop making it even worse by messing up the memory (of battery) by constantly plugging in and out.

OT: I got a huge feeling ATK is consuming alot of battery! I just backed up Auto Task Killer Pro to my SD-Card. Uninstalled the app. Next I'm going to see if my batt. lvl. consumption shows improvement.
Will calibrate battery too as soon as it reaches 100%.

Problems with Epic

I'm on ec05 un rooted.
I've noticed a problem that started a few months ago. Before I get into that...some things to know:
I have 5 batteries. 1 stock and 4 aftermarket.
One issue I have is battery drain. If I'm not on wifi then I get between 2-4 hours. With wifi it is 5-7.
Whenever I change the battery it is a toss up as to whether all of my apps will load. I have rebooted 5 times today within a 30 min period. All the apps still haven't loaded and battery life dropped 20%. I have tried using the keys to reboot and also taking the battery out.
The phone will also get hot when not on wifi.
Any suggestions on how to fix? I have tried factory reset and it doesn't fix it.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
If you're already willing to factory reset, you might as well Odin back fresh and see if it helps. Unfortunately root is needed to calibrate the battery in traditional ways.
If you have 5 batteries and have to swap out every 5 hours then your probably on your phone all day.
Are you just pulling the battery or letting it power down? I know stock has journaling on which protects you from if the battery gets pulled but after o long it ill catch up and do it mine has but I get why better battery life then that. My wifi on I will get about 15 hour with little bit of use but I will get about 6 to 7. When running pandora at work the whole time and maybe mess around with it for 30 mins. Also make sure you back out of everything
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
I would bet you've got some app installed that is constantly running in the background, constantly connecting and downloading data and killing the battery. Since WiFi uses less power than 3G you get better battery life on Wifi, but if you are constantly syncing and downloading you are going to kill the battery.
If you go into settings>accounts and sync and look at what's syncing it may give you a start. You could also go int settings>about phone>battery use and see what's using the most power.
The only thing that is set to sync is gmail.
The display is using 91% of the battery. Even if I don't use my phone much during the day, the display still shows 90% or higher.

The display is always the biggest drain. That is based on 100% of what you have used. If your battery is warm while not on wifi you are losing 3G and your phone is constantly trying to connect to sync. Put it in airplane mode for an hour and see how the drain is. My guess is a tower is down near you or under maintenance.

When wifi is on means 3g is off. And cdma 3g uses ALOT of battery because is has no type of "sleep mode" meaning it is on 24/7 and when you do use it it is a battery hog because it also uses a lot to power the cdma bands. Just another cheap flaw in the life of sprint.
So when you are not on wifi turn off 3g.
