I've been on Windows Mobile for years, but my wife has been using the Aria the last few months. I just updated her phone to the latest Stock ROM (trying to keep things simple), and I'm kind of shocked that after re-syncing it with her Gmail account, none of her contact synced! I have very little Android experience, but I kind of figured that, synced all this time to a Gmail account, her phone would have saved all of her contacts there, and not just on the device's internal memory.
Before installing the ROM, I backed up call logs and some apps with Astro, but I didn't think I'd need the Contacts or her email accounts, stuff like that. Did I just wipe her address book, or are they supposed to be saved somewhere out there?
You sure they were saved to Google's servers? Syncing only saves your contacts if they are linked to your GMail account. They won't save if you saved them to Phone or SIM (although they will still be saved on the SIM, unless that was wiped too).

At this point, I'm sure they weren't saved to Google's servers. I'm so surprised that Google, who automatically adds people to your Gmail contact list if you email them a few times, and tightly integrates the phone with a Gmail account, wouldn't automatically back up all phone contacts without specifically asking you to your Gmail account. My Windows Mobile phone contacts don't ask me if I want to save them to Exchange; they just do.
Since when does Microsoft "just work"? And Google doesn't?

Did you check her Google account to see if the contacts are saved there? If they are then you should still be able to sync them. If they're not then unless you did a nandroud they're gone. If you did a nandroid them you can just nandroid her current setup and restore the old nandroid, sync her contacts, and then reflash back to the current setup.

They're definitely not in her Google Account. And I installed the latest Stock ROM, which I'm told cannot be rolled back, unless someone's cracked that yet.

My phone's bugging out again for some reason today and I'm pretty sure I have to wipe it when I get home, currently I backup all my contacts to my outlook account on my computer at home.
My question, Is it better to use Google as the main storage for my contacts instead of resyncing each time I wipe my phone?
I use google. Main reason is because I use all of the services...like calendar, voice, gmail, and so on. Just easier for me.
Google. One of the best features for me was the integration of Google's address book, my Gmail had more complete contact information than even my last cell phone.
Google because after all it is a Google phone....
Google for sure. SO easy to flash a new ROM. All the app data is back, perfect and pristine; no worries about Outlook formatting things incorrectly, or things getting 'out of sync' when you update things online and/or on your phone.
I wipe WAY too much to leave it on the phone.. so Google it is for me..
Yup, google here. Makes things soo easy.
i use google because its very easy to restore my contacts after a wipe
Google for me as well. Remember you can chose to Sync only the groups you want sync'd. It requires some organizing in google to get your contacts into groups but is well worth the effort. This way you can leave out contacts you don't want on your phone, but can access via google should you really need to.

+1 on this i learned the hard wat to sync to google (first time i flased i messed up and cleared all my contacts) been google ever since
I used to keep them on my Exchange server at work then switched to using Google.
Googleeee.
Google it is.
I really can't believe that any one wouldn't keep them in Googles cloud.
I also used Google for everything. With Gmail push, battery life is even better. Before I used to use stock mail and my battery loose drain faster than using gmail now. It was all trial and error to see what fix your need.
So I an not sure if I am doing something wrong but I can not get gmail to sync my contacts. It does not pull numbers from my phone. It will only add my email addresses from my gmail. Does anyone have any ideas why? Thanks
Google all the way.
Yes. To both. Also, on all of my home computers and MobileMe. Everything has the full contact list always in sync.
Definitely Google. I also export from Google to a csv file every now and then just to be on the safe side, which then gets stored in my Dropbox account.
My wife was quite impressed the night we got our Heros and I had both of our (lengthy) contact lists loaded onto our phones before we even got out of the parking lot.
I save them on google. Coz I am afriaid of losing my phone.
I reeally want to root my g1 but i dont want to lose all my contacts, since there saved on your computer gmail account if i press sync will the all go back?
If not what else can i do?

You will not lose your contacts as long as they're synced with google. Every time you flash you have to sign back in, and it pulls all of your contacts. It's nice.

yeah what he said. also the app "AddressBook for Android" will backup your contacts. However if you use this to restore them it dupes b/c of the sync with Google. Slightly annoying so I ditched its slow laggy bugginess for the stock dialer/contact manager. I found an app to sync my contacts to facebook- that was the only real feature I dig about addressbook, and even that was sketchy.
also NitroDesk for android (outlook exchange sync) will backup your apps but its $20....
Just wanted to know which was better and why. I have a samsung I9000
Thanks
well if you save to google, and then you get a new android phone your contacts are always there when you login to your google account from your phone. i always save to google
save it on google. If anything happens to your phone, you will not need to worry about losing your contacts. It'll always be there and it's easier to edit contact on Google anyways. This is also helpful if you switch roms a lot. You wont have to copy out your contact and copy it back in everytime.
With applications like Google Sync, I was able to take my contacts and import them into my old Blackberry. When switching to my Android phone the import of contacts was automagical.
Save it to Google, and then export from there into a csv file an additonal backup.
My only issue with saving to Google is you can't assign custom ringtones to non-phone based contacts =/
Anyone know if this is fixed in 2.2?
I've lost my iPhone couple weeks ago and thanks gods all my contacts were in clouds!

What do you want the ringtone for if it's not from a phone?
Another reason to like google vs phone ... It's damn convenient to add a contact on the web page as needed, especially if someone emails you the information and you can just copy&paste it.
I've used Google for mine ever since I bought the G1 when it came out. Come to think of it if I wouldn't have I'd probably not have all of my numbers.
Good stuff.
One question
I synced my contact to my Google account, and since it is syncing, if I accidentally deleted all my contact in the phone, it will probably delete the contact in my Google account too, right?
Or it can restore the backup?

Uh...I think the OP was referring to the difference between the Google contacts and the phone contacts. Meaning that you cannot set ringtones for Google (non-phone) contacts, not contacts without phone numbers.
Although, if there is one thing I really miss from when I initially switched from a Blackberry to the G1, two years ago, was being able to basically setup "filters" for incoming calls, emails and SMS, a customize how each filter was handled.

Depends on the definition of "deleted"...
I don't think it is even possible to accidentally delete all of your contacts. They could be erased by some external means or memory failure, but the sync algorithm does not see that as a delete. A delete is selecting a contact and selecting "delete contact" from the context menu.

Accidentally Delete means someone press delete all on the phone..
The sync will not remove contact from google if you delete from phone. As for ring tone, we'll just need some dev to port stock android contact over. In stock android contact you can set ring tone for individual contact without having the contact on the phone.

Sounds like google is the way to go but how do I get my numbers in "groups" if its linked to google, such as doctors, freinds, family, work? I see that the google ones are a group themselves

You can use backupify, com to backup your google contacts at certain intervals.
That's a nice option to have if you ever accidentally delete your contacts.
If you delete a google contact from your phone it WILL be deleted off of your account. It is a two way sync.

Not directly.
There is no way to sync a phone contact to your Google contacts. You will have to create a separate Google contact.
I think a previous commenter gave the best advice to just use a ROM that has the vanilla android contact app. I think the TWIZ hybrid ROM has the vanilla contacts app.
I have the same complaint. I trying to hold off until there is a vanilla FroYo before using a custom ROM.
Does this mean that none of you are saving your contacts to your sim card?

That's the least advanced way to save a contact because you can only have a name and number, that is all.
I use to save all contacts to sim with my old phones. As soon as I started using my google account I stopped saving to the sim. Mind you I've been with t-mobile for five years with the same sim.

I upgraded from incred 1 to 2 and now when I add contacts to the phone I dont get the option to associate them with my mail account like I used to, with that now they are not stored in my gmail desktop. So if I do anything with this phone or lose it all of my recently added contacts will be gone. How do I fix this??
When you create a contact does it ask you which account? Like for mine is asks gmail, exchange (work account), or phone unsynced.
Also you can check your gmail settings that it is syncing contacts.
In gmail: Hit menu, press accounts, press menu again, press account settings, select your gmail account and make sure sync contacts is checked.

No its not offerig me that option, I used my main G-Email account to set up the phone, I have the contacts checked in sync in that account
Anyone else??/ I hate to go to the VZw store.. as usually I know more then they do
Did you get this fixed. When I add contacts they are automatically add it to my google account. When you say contacts do you mean email or do you mean the persons phone number and name.
How are you trying to add your contacts.
Sent from my Incredible using Tapatalk
Im trying to add phone #s. In the past I would be prompted to to chose which gmail account I wanted to associate the contact with. Now it just stores it to the phone without offering me the option.
Fixed?? not really, what I have been doing is exporting them to to the sim or SD, then importing them to the google account kind of a pain. thanks for responding.
From what I've noticed on some non sense roms, when I add contacts they are automatically added to my Google account. Maybe HTC took that option out if you dont have multiple account on there. Seems like a stupid option.
"Would you like your contacts to persist thru diifferent rom's/devices or do you want them to be lost everytime you reset your phone (or manually back them up)?"
I use Google to host my email account for business. Since my Eris the contacts have been backing up to my Email account, now with this phone its not so easy.
Are you using sense or aosp?

Ok, so I got a new Nexus 4 and started it.
It asked me for my gmail account which I entered. However after the initial setup was completed I was shocked to find my phonebook contacts exactly the same as my old phone on my Nexus 4.
Does anyone know how did Google get hold of my phone contacts ?
Few things:
- The contacts I see on the phone are not gmail contacts. I have 400+ gmail contacts. The contacts I automatically got on the phone were the exact contacts in my previous Android phone (HTC HD2 rooted with ICS CM Nexus ROM)
- In my old phone I never synched contacts. I always had mail checked in sync settings. Calendar, contacts etc were not checked.
- I also own a Nexus 7 tab and that does not have any setting to store contacts.
- When I ordered the phone I selected the option to not link it to any google account.
Any idea ?
Well, phone contacts have been synced to your Google account for a long time now. You must have synced them at least once on your old phone.
Must have synced to your account before you turned off contacts sync.
It's possible that they're saved on your SIM Card.

While that is certainly a possibility but I am skeptical of that because
- As a practice I never sync anything except EMAIL on my gmail, hotmail, yahoo accounts. everything else is unchecked.
- My phone contacts are not synced with hotmail or yahoo but appear to be only on gmail even though I had the same settings across all accounts.
- There are contacts I have on my gmail which I didnt have on my previous phone. These are not present on the new Nexus 4.
you probably synced it on ur old phone when u flashed ics, since default is to sync when you got ur contacts back on ur old phone it probably didnt automatically
google didnt "steal" your info or anything unless you think of what they do with info as stealing
contact sync is actually awesome and really helpful, i wouldnt see this as a bad thing if i were u but everyone has their own opinions
thanks for the replies so far.
While I agree it is a good feature to have, but I use a third party app to achieve this or do export to SD and then import from SD to back up contacts.

When you initially setup an android phone it asks you if you want to backup and sync your data with Google's servers and you've must have done this before in the past. I also think contact sync is set to on by default its in settings>accounts>google>[email protected] I actually like the feature as all my apps and contacts are automatically downloaded to a new phone right at the start.
