Monitoring phone temperature with extended battery? - EVO 4G General

So I finally bit the bullet and purchased two Galilio 2000mah batteries from ebay and currently have been quite pleased, however, I use the battery monitor widget found in the marketplace and I have found that it is not correctly displaying the temperature. It is always stuck at 77.3 F. Using stock battery I am able to get a accurate temperature.
I like to be able to get a temp reading so I can stop using the phone if it gets too hot.
Any ideas why this is happening and/or recommendation for one that will work?

BatteryTime Lite seems to report accurate temperatures for me and my Sprint OEM Extended battery.

I use battery left widget its dead on! It just takes awhile to calibrate but it works.. check it out!

Unfortunately, neither of these programs worked for me. They did the same thing as Battery Monitor Widget. Showing a constant 77.3 F. Any other ideas/suggestions?

Yep... cheap battery is cheap! I am betting it doesn't have a temp sensor....

Setcpu works for me but I don't have one of the budget batteries

I think a good app for estimated battery would be juiceplotter. Its in the market. I use that and its pretty accurate, but sometimes its off.

If battery monitor widget doesn't work... nothing is going to. They all get the measurements from the same place.

Yeah, I thought so, just was hoping for a different answer. Oh well, life will go on. Some how.

Same here, cheap '2000mah Galilio' batteries from eBay always read 25 deg Celsius.
Kam

You're going to be okay just by feeling the phone. If it gets hot to the touch, shut it off or take it out of your pocket. It's a waste of space having battery temperatures displayed if you ask me, unless you're way overclocked or running Snap.

[Q] Heating up while charging

Does everybody's vibrant heat up like crazy when they are charging their vibrant?
yes I have two of them and they get pretty hot ( you can feel it in the back side underneath speaker)
Mine as well gets hot but it doesnt happen all the time. It's charging right now and it isnt doing it. Weird...
it usually won't get hot unless you're USING it while it's charging.
Mine used to go up to 116 degrees while charging, but them I swapped it out and my new one barely goes past 95

Yes mine gets very hot also. How do you know your phones temperature? Theres a temp guage built into the phone?

Try disabling the Wi-Fi and GPS while charging it....Seems to stay cool when I do this on mine.
When using up a lot of energy and charging at the same time it causes the heat...this is one of the problem with the current battery tech :/..
from experience with other phones..wifi + charging = hot as hell..if you really must use wifi while charging for say tethering then I suggest putting it on a metal surface(which will act as a heatsink in a way) and it won't get hot.
I'm from down south.. And mine sits at 110... seen it at 115 before... Ive never had another phone get as hot..

I noticed this as well too. Seems that it is more noticable if you put in on charging soon after using wifi/gps intensive apps. Maybe they stay on longer when it sees it is on ac power? I even had one point where after over an hour charging there was no noticable gain in battery charge. I imagine it was using so much power that little was left to actually charge the battery. In all cases, a reboot fixed the issue and it charged quickly with little increase in temp.
Kinda remides me of my previous windows mobile phones. Sometimes an app would "hang" even though there was no error message and the app appeared to close down fine, I would notice my battery would be used quickly and the phone would be very warm. Usually it was an app that used wifi or gps that caused the issue. Maybe the app crashed before giving a "release command" or similar to the hardware and it kept on running at full power?
It happened to me twice. My phone went past all of yours. It got to temp of 143F. It was really hot all over the phone. I had to turn it off and take out the battery for it to cool down. It wouldn't even let me charge it cus it was too hot when the phone was off. I woke up to 18% battery charge after 7 hours of charging. It said that the display was using most of the batteries. I believe when you plug in your phone, i noticed a change in the brightness setting and i dont have automatic brightness enable. Now i make sure i fc everything before i charge and the brightness is at 0.

I use battery life from the market, also the phone had a temp gauge but to access it I use the "my device" app from tmobile > storage and battery > battery level

Normal. Remember different phone and different processor .... winter they should be cooler even while charging.

Battery life stinks...

Hey guys what is up. I'm just wandering.. my Droid is brand new. Got it 2 days ago. Today I had to recharge my battery twice. I did use it a lot... so that may be it.. and when I didn't use it the battery life stayed the same for as long as I didn't touch the phone. Is my battery good? I got the app that tells me the temperature and everything. The hottest was 112F. It says my battery health is "good health". Will my phone hold a charge for a longer period of time after it has been charged then drained... and repeated. Does it just need to be broken in? Thanks for reading this whole essay I wrote you guys.. Haha. Well thank you so much again... and if you can please get back to me as soon as possible that would be great!

You should really search a little bit before you post. There are COUNTLESS threads on battery life.
Your best bet, until HTC fixes it, is to charge until the phone says you're at 100%, then turn it off and charge until the LED turns green. Charging and discharging really won't affect anything - their is no "memory" with their batteries.
Okay, thanks for the quick response. I appreciate it. Sorry. I should've read.. I was just a bit anxious. My apologies.

Check Settings > About phone > Battery and make sure up time and awake time aren't the same.
If they are the same, it means something is keeping your phone awake when the screen goes off, which drains battery.
I just got my Droid Incredible a few days ago too, and I knew coming into it that the battery life has issues from a lot of users, but man, it really sucks!
I have it fully charged at 8am, and by 3:30 (with very moderate use), it's already at 20%. I've disabled everything I can (WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, live wallpaper, installed ATK and keep my tasks at none, etc), and still the same.
I really love the phone (it's amazing other than battery), but the battery life is such a big deal for me that I am really thinking about returning it and waiting for the Samsung Fascinate to come (hopefully sooner than later). Thankfully I have until Aug 30 to call Verizon and return the phone... i sure hope the Fascinate gets a definite release date by then.
I'm going to try the full charge + phone off + charge again to see if that improves things, but other than that, does anyone recommend the Seidio 1750mAh battery or the HTC Touch Pro2 OEM (1500 mAh) battery? Does it make that much of a difference?
I read the findings on batteryboss.org, and it appears that the TP2 battery was better but the Seidio battery they tested was a used one, so it wasn't a fair comparison.
Any thoughts/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Loose atk....and read. I get a full 18 plus hours and I don't bump charge. Lots of info out there

I purchased a 2150 mah battery from verizon and i can say I wont be having battery issues.. that is one option, but you wont find a case that fits your phone, that is the only downfall
I was just reading reports about the new Facebook app...looks like they are working on that fix if you use that and it is causing a battery drain
http://www.androidcentral.com/facebook-confirms-battery-drain-latest-android-update
Uninstall the 1.3.0 facebook app RIGHT AWAY if you downloaded it. That destroyed my battery life yesterday and I have never had battery problems with my DInc.
You can just use the regular HTC Facebook app until an update is released for the facebook for android.
Try it without the new facebook for a day and see if it changes.
If you don't have the facebook app then just make sure bluetooth, gps, wifi are off when you aren't using them. I recommend trying bump charging but I've never personally and my phone lasts about 26-28 hours+ with mild to heavy usage depending on the day.

Thanks for the replies..I don't use Facebook so that wouldn't be my problem.
I think ATK is good.. I mean I don't have it on auto so I sometimes just kill all tasks and I have noticed any decrease from the already poor battery performance.

Phone battery drains quickly

Recently I've noticed my phone dropping percentages within minutes, I've been on my phone for about 30 min just moderately surfing the web and it has dropped almost 30 percent. I tried juice defender, although it seemed it
worked somewhat it was really messing with my data connection. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

There are bugs with the displayed battery % not being accurate. Especially if you power down the phone while it's charging.
My Vibrant just eats battery by the minute... I am honestly not sure what is going on. IT's 2.30pm and I barely used the phone and it's down to 53% now from 9am.

Yea compared to my last two smartphones, the vibrant battery life is no worse. It's definitely better than the n900. But no smart phone's battery life has compared to my blackberry's I used to use.

I had this issue. Turns out my battery had swollen due to over heating. Excessive use while on the charger. In the end, it would take 7 hours to charge 80%. Hence why it was on the charger.
Doesn't sound like you have the same issue. But of you start experiencing charging issue coupled with rapid draining get the barry replaced. No issues anymore.

Why is my DISPLAY eating 80% of my battery?

So my battery has been great since switching to bangster's build. I loved it. Only thing that confuses me was my "about battery usage" status. It shows that my display is eating the majority of my battery. Any idea?
I'm using the latest tmousa radio. My setting is always 25% dim and no animation. I don't have live wall paper nor any widget that requires constant update.
I've attached a screenshot to show my status.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
How did you get that screen? Then I can compare. I'm sure it's correct and probably normal if you think about how big it is. All those numbers are relative to each other. Your screen is going to take up the majority of your battery compared to apps, regardless of what it's set at. I bet if you set it at 100% brightness, the percentage will stay about the same.
Mine has always had similar readings regardless of build
i also got 80% ? even when i turning off the brightness :-D
Mines doesn't ever seem to take as my much but my android system does.

80 percent is pretty high.
These are my stats after being off the charger for about 8 hours. Even if I had my screen on and playing on my phone all day I have never seen dispaly that high on mine.
Maybe the app you're using isn't working correctly on the HD2 (what is that, taskkiller x?)
As long as it's a minor inconvenience like that I wouldn't worry about it...
I was running dark stone's build before this and I remember system taking the majority of the load so I was just concern about my display setting.
I have task killer but not set to autokill. I'm stumped on this. Maybe it is normal since my battery life is better than ever.
Maybe I should post this question in bangster's thread to see if other users of this build experience similar things.

This is the answer.
It's a battery. By definition it holds a limited amount of power.
Until they invent a phone with a matter - anti matter reactor that can keep it powered on for thousands of years before needing a refueling, having to plug the phone in every night is just a reality. And that day is far off because the price of the Dilithium Crystals needed to harness the matter - anti matter reaction is just ridiculous.

After 8 hours of heavy use you still have 61% battery? That is good. I'm normally down to 18% after 8 hours of heavy use.
You even stated that you don't lose power with the screen off.
Why don't you try staying with one ROM for a while and see if it settles? I posted a pic in another thread asking about VU battery life. I was just over 17 hours with about 50% left on battery. It was a weekend and I didn't use my phone much. It just sat idle with WiFi and Bluetooth on if i wasn't talking to someone in the phone. The screen was off for the majority of the time.

You got real suggestions. There was nothing left to be said after the real suggestions.
The real suggestions were and are to accept the battery use you are getting because it's pretty good. The only way you are going to see much better battery life is to invent a new kind of battery.
Now either accept that an enjoy your good battery life or be miserable about it somewhere else.
Oh, I just figured out some of the OP! Had to put punctuation where it belongs to make it a clear, coherent thought. They unplugged their phone at 9:30am and by 1:30pm it only had 61%...
I thought they were saying that they unplugged at 1:30pm and would be at 61% around 9:30pm. Which, from their own description of use, would be phenomenal. But even what they are getting is good.
Maybe if they used correct punctuation and paragraph breaks it would be easier to read and understand what they are trying to convey. It would be one thing to use a bunch of acronyms and shorthand, but periods in the middle of sentences and none at the ends makes what they wrote very hard to understand. The area where extended battery is mentioned is very confusing. I read it as the extended battery was "Showing 130% right now, unplugged; and by 9:30 it gets down to 61% with very heavy usage".
