want to beta test the new sprint update? - Epic 4G General

If you want to beta test the new sprint update call sprint or go to the store they have not released it to the public at large yet and wont OTA the update until they are sure it wont break anyones phone. more details in a few.
EDIT: DONT EVEN BOTHER its just as bad as the OTA EB13 and sprint pulled it from the stores about an hour ago according to tech support. still bad compass directions and data reset issues
WTF sprint/samsung WTF........
EDIT2: When I say update I mean the one in this post not EB13 OTA or self flashed. I have 2 epics one got this update it is sitting next to the other one right now. The updated one is roaming with 1 bar and the non updated one has 5 bars not roaming. No 4g on the updated one the other has 2 bars. Wifi will not stay connected on the updated one full bars on the other and I'm 4 feet from the router (verizon fios standard router with D-link for wifi)

Eb13 is not bad for everyone. The compass is a simple fix and I don't have a data reset issuse.

It's the OTA that has the most trouble... not the clean flash like we do.

I didn't do the wipe. I did the zip update I got from samsung.

Thanks for the input. Even after the "simple fix" for compass mine is still about 40 degrees off
(on both my epics) weather I use magnetic north or true north verified with a real compass. What hardware version do you have? I'm D700.0.5

I hope someone leaks it from the store.

Its worse than EB13 and sprint installed it on my epic not me.

well then dump it so we can all try it. i just talked to my friend at a corperate sprint store in overland park (sprint headquarters) and he hasnt heard of anything about this.

What's the build number?

Ok here is the link to the tar looks suspiciously like the one the samsung .msi extracts. Can someone who knows more about the software check this out and let us know?

There is more than one compass issue. Re-calibrating doesn't fix the compass for everyone.

I thought it might be I didnt have access to the machine I used that updater on but I thought the dates look similar. I will see if I can talk my tech guy at the sprint store to hooking me up with whatever he said he put on my phone. He has epic and is pissed too.

My compass is off by about 40 degrees as well. I tried the upside down calibration. It is very apparent when using GPS status. When driving it uses gps for the compass and it is quite accurate. When you stop at a red light, it uses the internal compass and you can watch it swing off-course. For example it will read east or north-east, when it should be reading north-west.

I smell BS. I work at a Sprint store and the tech center I worked at previous to going to the sales only location (Which is only 15 minutes away) hasnt heard a thing of this supposed "update that only the Sprint stores have/had". It doesnt exist...Never did..

I agree. This sounds like BS26....

Does Sprint have the ability to update your phones or install EB13 over the wire? Or do they just use the OTA method to update Samsung phones. I was unaware they even used OTW methods.
ya, this guy is trolling hard, but seriously, anyone know my question?

Quit trolling with your bull**** about new updates. Imagine that as soon as someone told you to dump it you fidnt know what yo say. Get off the boards

I'm having the dude test the compass... also even if this exact thing don't work on vibrant.. its proof that its software and fixable
.. that's all I really wanna know...
Update on compass soon....
It's the firmware for the Captivate, which flashes for different radios and so forth. It could be ported, but it would be a lot of unnecessary work.
To be honest, I find the idea of flashing different ROMs to be stressful. I stopped using my jailbroken iPhone because I grew tired of keeping up with flashing and jumping through hoops. I just want Samsung to fix the phone with an OTA, so I can go back to my normal life.
So, we have no word on a fix for the Vibrant. But one can assume that a fix on AT&T will find itself on the T-Mobile device.

Although its still not been said if its 100% working.. could be a start though
No, it's a great piece of encouragement. Still, unless something is said soon, I will probably return my phone until the official fix is out. I can always purchase it again at a later date. It's encouraging to see a leak from Samsung fix the problem, but I'm sure you can understand: $500+ is a lot to spend on a phone.
Keep delivering the good news. Hopefully the Compass has been fixed as well. I really love TouchWiz, and was dreading the possible jump to HTC Sense.

don't recall anyone saying it couldn't be fixed - can you point us at one?
the consensus opinion has been no one knew whether it was firmware or software
and btw, while this is good news, we're not totally certain this is a permanent "fix"
if it's still working in 2 or 3 weeks for the folks that installed it, then it might be considered a fix

Regardless its getting 8 satellite locks for a lot of people .. that's never happened before ... this is a leak so not even official. So official may even be better ....
I was very concerned about the compass as I wasn't convinced that could be fixed via firmware basd on what I saw in the GPS service screens (seemed laggy even straight from the device). Eugene373 posted a fix to GPS for rooted phones here ://to.ly/5TFy (add http to follow the link). I installed it and it fixed both GPS and compass for me personally. This for me was proof positive tha there will be an official Samsung fix released to solve this issue.

Mine has been doing it for a couple of weeks and I finally got fedup with this routine and called TMO and complained. I'm getting a replacement Vibrant in 3 days or so but I'm not holding my breath on it working any better really although I hope that it won't freeze and reboot at least. This official fix can't come fast enough because this GPS caused freezing and rebooting is really getting to me at this point.

Software Update From T-Mobile?

Hi everyone, first time posting!
I just received a notification that T-Mobile has an update for my Vibrant. Did anyone else get this? Could this be the GPS fix everyone's been talking about? I'm installing it right now!
I tried to manually update it but I got the same old message "no firmware! "
It didn't end up going so great... It hanged on the Vibrant screen after the update. Doing a nandroid restore right now.
Lol. Really?
My first post so here it goes.
I just finished downloading the update and its not 2.2. I have noticed a few slight changes though. First being that websites seem to open faster and scroll smoother, it could just be me though. The menu that is brought up when you are using the browser is different and has a brightness control on it.
There is a new HD camcorder application and a task manager application. I have only had it running for a couple minutes. In not sure if there is a gps fix cause I'm in my basement so it its rare for me to get any signal down here.
I also just found out youtube videos have a HQ button on them now.
Just checked with mine and I get the "no firmware" as well.
looks like JI6 then?
So how do theses OTA updates work? Does everyone get it at the same time or does it update few people at a time? Anyone know?
Will I get any update if my phone is rooted and has lag fix installed?

I'm already on JI6 so it's all good!
GPS has been OK with this version, over WiFi it's really not going to work well for some reason. Jumps around all over the place.
Tracking has been reliable overall. Using it with the Root Wireless app to track my network coverage it was very quick to lock in.
Samsung posted this on Facebook as well.
The Gallery is still problematic.
Reception has been EXCELLENT, overall if this is what we would have gotten back in July people would have been much happier.

OTA's are staged out in batches, not all at once. T-Mobile has sold about a million of these phones at this point (given that Samsung claims 3 million SGS Phones sold in the U.S. this is entirely likely). They are most definitely NOT going to update a million phones at the same time.
The update for YOU could come now, tomorrow, next week, or before the end of the month. Sitting here in a thread hitting refresh hoping for vital info about the OTA is a complete waste of time.
You have four options...
1). Wait for the OTA, which will arrive whenever it arrives
2). Frankin Twiz, built on JI6
3). Bionix 1.6, built on JI6
4). leaked unmodified JI6 firmware
Options 2,3,4 will get you JI6 today, with the associated risks of taking the management of the update into your hands. Option 1 is the official option which requires nothing but patience. Decide.
Wonder if I could call T-mobile and naively ask about a GPS problem and see if they will go ahead and push JI6 to me?

Ha! You think customer care or tech care have that much power? The people in tmo who do, ssg data, don't take any calls and if they want to, never actually have to talk to the customer at all. They work solely on trouble tickets and work orders. The highest you may get by calling tech is atsg, the people who submit trouble tickets to them.

I got off the phone with tech support at T Mobile a few hours ago and here is what they related to me. Your inability to get checkin succeeded may or may not be usual or normal, they have no clue and the OTA is scheduled to run from 10-7 thru 10-31. has anyone else or does anyone else have the same inability to get feedback from the checkin code? This is the only phone I have had that the checkin failed to register except for a MT3g which they promptly replaced.
got the update today... no problems so far...

You're kidding me... I returned my G2 because I get terrible signal indoors on campus, and I couldn't live without my BB's UMA so I figured I'd wait until it was enabled. The tards on the phone and in the store said it's looking closer to December for the release...
EDIT: Err... that was a useless post. I hope the updates become widespread; I'll definitely rush back to get the phone.
If this is real.... this could be big for getting perm. root available. Either way the tether option is sweet! Did the radio version change anyone? My G2 is off and charging right now... My signal is crap compared with my MTS. Really need a newer radio version.

Bell Canada finally admit the GPS bug!!!

I bought a Galaxy S from Bell Canada in august. Made the update to JH2 trough kies. Had the GPS bug (locked fine, but was sometimes way off (1-3 streets off)).
I told Bell. They said they didn't know any GPS problem affecting their device.
I tried many differents things, but I still had the problem so I recorded tracks with both my Hero and my Galaxy S to prove that the Galaxy S has a bug.
I called Samsung. I told them that I had a bug with the GPS. They said that they were not aware of any GPS bug affecting the GT-i9000M (the canadian version).
I went to Bell and asked for a repair. Seems like I was the first in Canada to report the problem because they told me again that there was no report on such problem, so it must be a specific problem with my device. They give me a Samsung Omnia II for the time of the repair. Worst touch screen ever, almost useless compared to a Galaxy S.
My device came back "repaired" (what they did was a factory reset and allegedly a ROM update, but it was JH2 before and after the repair, so this is bull****). In short they did nothing but loose my time.
Of course, I still have the exact same bug, the repair guy probably didn't even test it.
I call Bell again. Shock! Horror! They admit that there is a problem with ALL Galaxy S. Finally! Not that I told them since August... And it's not only in Canada, according to the tech support agent, it affects devices from all around the world. And that I shouldn't worry because the update to 2.2 will be released everywhere in the world in November and will fix that. Great!
Oh wait. The update to 2.2 is already released in some parts of Europe. I am not even sure that it fixes the GPS. At least I have an audio recording of Bell telling me that the bug will be fixed with an update in November. Better than nothing I guess.
+1
Two thumbs up for your effort. Hopefully canadian sgs froyo update comes on November like the rest of the world....

sorry to say but some tech reps are more informed than others because they take time to do their own independant research. One tech i talked to barley knew a thing about the galaxy S, while another rep was fascinated by it and couldnt wait to get their own. Mine is in repair for faulty internal SD, lets hope froyo will fix the gps, as i didnt send it in for that issue.
Those who know something about the Galaxy S (and other smartphones) are the so-called "data" support.
1-877-328-2123 (choose language and then select the first option in the menu)
I agree data support are the only ones that know anything. I called customer service like 5 times before they gave me someone that knew anything, ala data support.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
Well, I think that of course the response is "we haven't heard about any bugs". It's business -- they aren't allowed to admit to anything unless an order comes from the top to announce that a certain bug .. or a few bugs have been found. I haven't seen any admittals from Samsung that SGS is slow, laggy and the 2.2 update is crap. Or that there are any bugs at all. That would crash sales.
Same here
I got pretty much the same info. been through the same ordeal. I don't think I can last til the end of november for a maybe fix that might not fix anything or might get pushed back to january or even february or??? At least now with them endorsing the issue it should not be as hard to fight for an exchange, maybe get a Z.....

Well that's not the GPS bug I am talking about. My GPS locks just fine (as already said). The problem is that it is not always precise. But anyways xtra1.gpsonextra.net seems farther aways (mesured by ping times) than north-america.pool.ntp.org, so it should not fix anything.
And north-america.pool.ntp.org works just fine on my HTC Hero.

Well the thing is, when you know that there is a bug and you hide it to increase your sales, you do not deserve any customers.

At least I have an audio recording of Bell telling me that the bug will be fixed with an update in November. Better than nothing I guess.

I am very curious as to what software you used to record that call?
You didn't use a Korean Galaxy S (SHW-M110S) by any chance, did you? Because its firmware has a native call recorder function that I would die to get my hands on, but unfortunately Samsung doesn't allow international Galaxy S users to flash to the Korean firmware Send me a PM if you know how to force flash it!

I am a proud user of the Asterisk PBX, which I installed on my OpenWRT router . I used that to record, not my cell phone.

All companies do that. Focusing on all the bugs takes the attention from the good to the bad. Basic stuff. All the companies that made you any of the things you own operate on the same principle. This is business. This is life.
But this does not mean they are not working hard on fixing the issues -- believe me, they are. Our comments and complaints are very important in bringing these things out. Stuff that gets discussed here on XDA dev is _vital_.

root your bell sgs, go to /system/etc, open gps.conf
change from:
NTP_SERVER=north-america.pool.ntp.org
To:
NTP_SERVER=xtra1.gpsonextra.net
you don't even have to change *#1472365#*. I get lock to 10 sat in Montreal within 30sec. give it a try!

Interesting- this is one fix I hadn't seen before. Where did you read about it?

Oh wait. The update to 2.2 is already released in some parts of Europe. I am not even sure that it fixes the GPS. At least I have an audio recording of Bell telling me that the bug will be fixed with an update in November. Better than nothing I guess.
