[Q] Have you noticed a recent reduction in dl speeds? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've read recently that many rooted folks using cm7 have dl speeds lower than expected. Then, on the tmo vibrant forums, people started recently complaining about drasticly reduced (not throttled) hsdpa speeds. I'm rooted but still on stock (waiting for cm to go official) and I noticed today that my download speeds were far slower than they used to be. In areas here in Los Angeles where I used to get 3-5mb dl speeds, I now get 256k-1.5mb. So I wanted to start a thread to keep track of anyone who has noticed the same thing in the past week or so. If you do post, just make sure you have not edited any prop files that can affect dl/ul speeds. As I stated before, I am rooted on stock froyo 2.2.1 with no changes to prop files. Anyone else?

I'm in Miami, Fl. Last week me and my wife had super fast speeds. But now for the past 3 days or so, Everything Data related has been so slow. It's almost as if being on Edge. Sometimes worst. With alot of Data timeouts in between. It sucks. She's on stock not rooted while i've been through CM7 Rooted stock with various kernels.
BTW: The speeds on my signature were from last week. Today this is what i'm getting. See the difference?

I was getting around 1.5 with cm7 and went back to a 2.2 Rom and now I get between 3 and 5 mbps. I'm north of Tampa. I just found it Rom related.

Damn, I need to move up a couple miles then. xD

Yeah, there seems to be some common slowdown in the past week. Keep posting your experience and areas before I give a call to tmo to ask "WHAZZZUUUP?"

I'm going tomorrow to exchange my phone So i'm going to ask then and report back on WTH man! Haha. This sucks.

I realized this as well. Webpages used to load faster, and these are websites I go on everyday, and this week, it's just been much slower. It's faster than edge but nowhere near 4G. And also, I'm on Iced Glacier with Faux's kernel.

Getting this now and web pages are also loading much faster. Could it be timing? Too many people using t-mobiles data at once? It may sound dumb but it's just a theory.

yes but now on 3g i am getting like 5 or 6 mbs of down and 2mbs up and when its get connectend to hspa its get less than 2 mbs on down

DL speeds all over the place
on mobilespeedtest.com I get somewhere between 15842 and 22727, if i check it on speedtest.net it's anywhere from 50 to 6389. both of these are 4G on CM7 nightly 7.

It's a pretty simple mental math conversion...
But I have noticed a slowdown too... Spokane, WA here. Thought it was just a CM7 thing. My data speeds are still tolerable, but my latency is garbage.

When I left iced glacier and went to cm7 my speeds were totally crippled. Tried the build.prop fix but still nothing. In areas that I was getting 5-6 I'm pulling 1.5. It sucks cause I love everything else about this rom.

Nope, I haven't seen a dip in speed. I've actually seen an increase in speed recently. I used to average 6-8 mbps down and <1 to 1 mbps up. As of recent, I'm consistently getting 8-10 down and 3-4 up...

Just got my Glacier yesterday, coming from G2. I'm in love with CM7 on both devices. If I try out Iced Glacier is there anything other than the screen-off animation that I will miss? Anything really cool about IG that is different than standard FroYo? I want my download speed back and if that's what I gotta do that's what I'll do. Thanks in advance for any info.

Ice Glacier is Sense, so if you like Sense, IG is the way to go. There are no major issues with it (just read the dev thread and you'll see).
I would stick with v1.1.4 if you go with Ice Glacier.

Though when I flashed to IG I was still getting crippled speeds. But like i said before. There has been a major increase in speed with out any slowdowns lately. Feels great.
One other thing that is way off-topic but since you guys mentioned it earlier, There is no way to get that awesome animation on screen off/on like in CM7 on our sense roms huh?? Because that was the best thing about CM7 for me. Lol i wasted 30% in an hour just turning off and on the screen showing it off. xD

Incredible 4G Speeds after Netarchy's rooted final OTA

Ok, so I've been getting pretty good speeds with my 4G before the OTA update, around 7-8ish Mbps. This is all taken from the same place, inside my house.
After the OTA, I tried some 4G, and I was SHOCKED!

Edit: Just to make sure I wasn't hallucinating and it wasn't a fluke, I ran several more tests, the lowest score being just over 9Mbps. I'm thinking that either Sprint just flipped the "real" 4G switch, or somehow I got unthrottled 4G.
you suck.. lol
my best has been like 4Mbps.
that is with the Rooted leak though...
Niice, what kind of latency are you seeing?
I am also getting very good speeds, around 6mbps consistently while I could only get about 4mbps before in the same spot.
I'm kindof wanting to update to the 2.2 final roo just for that. I'm currently on BakedSnack 1.0
...hmm..
Really the only thing keeping me on this ROM is the sexy theme.
I just installed the OTA 2.2 update and have noticed a huge increase in 4G speed also.
I used to cap out at 5.5Mbps averaging 4. Now I cap out at 10.5 averaging 6-8.
This is a completely stock non rooted EVO.

Well, I'm not gonna go THAT far, I needs mah root! haha. I'm totally going to update now though, my battery lasts a good amount with 4G on all day. and I want it to go faster!
My speeds increased too. In King of Prussia, PA I maxed out at 4 Mbps. Now I max out at 7Mbps. I'm so angry that the Lehigh Valley doesn't have WiMax yet. That's where I live
Same story here. My previous high would be in the 4 - 5 Mbps range. Last night I pulled down 8.3 Mbps. I've had the same positive results regardless of what kernel I've been running, so I would have to think this is a result of the new wimax radio.
Can you keep the speed during actual usage?
Can you keep the speed during actual usage?
I'm on 'leaked' now and speed is the same as on .47 (around 6) but say on usb tethered and skype my real transfer is super low (very low quality picture). It was perfect on 2.1.
So is it just short 'high peak' to look cool on test? Any thoughts?
Im using FreshEvo 3.1 and I also saw better speeds (previous peak was 3-4, now pulling 8-9). If I remember correctly from reading a previous post about speeds, the more activity the faster your connection should be. I'm gonna be optimistic and say they DID turn on the real 4g switch along with the new updated wimax.
My speeds have gone way up too.I'm running Fresh 3.0.3w/the stock kernel.I'm actually pretty impressed.I live in upstate NY and figured when I got the phone I probably wouldnt see any 4g coverage for a year or so
We should tip this thread to Engadget if we get more confirmation

Why does everyone say this??? I watched my net usage in System Panel while I was doing my test and it's near spot on. It doesn't take your peak speed, but averages it.
I'm not trying to insult anybody. If there's something I'm missing on why the speedtest.net app isn't worth it, please enlighten me.
I don't really get it either, I'm out of 4g coverage atm but just ran some 3g tests using speakeasy and the numbers are about the same as what I've been getting from speedtest.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I used the speakeasy link here, which got the highest numbers for me at about 10.5-11Mbps depending on which server I chose.
I also use the Speedtest.net app and now get 6000 where I used to get 3500 - 4400.
Also tested using Xtremelabs speedtest app, am getting 6.5-9Mpbs now where I used to get 3.5-4.5.

Insanely fast HSPA+ speeds? Fluke or what?

So I was in downtown Myrtle Beach this evening which is like a ghost town in the winter and decided I would try some speed tests at mobilespeedtest.com. On doing 3, 5, and 7mb downloads I was getting insanely fast speeds. Any ideas? Did my phone cache the download? I was using the stock android browser and running CM7 b#55.
Thanks

It's a fluke, I've done it as well. The more you test it the faster it says your speeds are, the most accurate is the speedtest app on the market. That will give you true speed test results.

When I use the Speedtest.net app in the market my download speed is continually climbing, and never seems to max out. I also noticed that instead of saying UTMS or whatever it used to say it just says cell. This was a speedtest.net result from last night. I have seen it climb into the 8000s, but my sdcard was full of junk so I cleaned it out when I wiped for CM7. Here is my speed test app result which was done inside with about 3 bars HSPA+. I did a mobilespeedtest.com when I was outside and was so stunned I didn't do another app test. Also note that when I do smaller file sizes on mobilespeedtest my results get slower.

I've seen some weird speedtest stuff. My Speedtest is rarely over 3-4mbps.
During actual downloads I see 7-9mbps (about 1100KB/s is what it topped out at.) This is not peak, this is sustained. It fluctuates somewhat but I tested it out for over an hour and it averaged out at 890KB/s. That's over 7mbps, average, held for over an hour. I was impressed That's faster than my crappy home internet.
So why do I get speedtests that do not reflect this? Hell if I know.
(Experimenting a bit on the last day of my billing month, so I was not worried about burning through data )

i don't consider mobilespeedtest.com to match anything in the real world....My G2 just scored >27000 kbps/s.....Even 2 years ago my G1 scored like 10900, which is just not possible.......i believe speedtest.net gives better (much lower) estimates....

I just tether and use the PC for speed tests. Typically a usenet client. If all you have is a phone, you could dl a large file and simply time it.
Then divide file size by time and you have your speed.
Crude/low-tech but it'll do.
Typicalll....
When I'm connected to HSPDA (90% of the time), I get an average of 6MBPS down and up to a little over 8. Anywhere in that range.
In Washington, DC
In NYC it's a little more bogged, but I'll usually see 4-5 down.

Problem after problem

Does anyone else have just complete crap for 3g? i have tried the 3g fix already which did nothing or me and i am just giving up at this point. My downloads are below 500kb all the time. Randomly ill shoot up at 1200kb, is below 500kb normal? Oh and is there any reason cm7 3g is terrible?
well are you on sense or aosp (such as cm7) because aosp has always had much slower 3g than sense roms in my experience. same with 4g. if your on aosp then 500kbps is kinda normal in my opinion but with sense i easily reach 1.1-1.5 mbps on 3g. and with 4g aosp=300kbps on a good day sense=3-4mbps somtimes in good areas upwards of 8-10 mbps. so take from that what u want...
I'm sitting back on my stock sense right now which would normally get 1100 1200 now im dying out at 200-300
I am close to giving up on aosp even though its super smooth. what's a good sense rom to go to?

Synergy rls1 is the best in my opinion. And there is tons of addons for it so u can customize it like its your day job. This rom acctualy got me to leave aosp for good. Give it a spin. Oh and the 3g 4g and wifi are way faster than most rom's i used.

In the KC area I'm lucky to get 100-200 kbps anytime on 3G. It went to **** about a year ago. I'm just glad to have a 4G signal in most areas around here.
I'm getting about the same 3G speed you guys are reporting. Around 500 kbps at most with average around 300 mbps.
The area I live in is super saturated with 3G users, but luckily very few 4G users. I can usually get 4-5 mbps on 4G around here.
Im using the same rom nd on most days its a hit or miss for my 3g I usually use my EPST nd do a data reset nd just mess with it. There seems to be no great way to keep a steady high 3g flow. You kinda have to just use trial n era.

I tried Synergy for about 30 seconds. Yes 3G and 4G worked and it was fine, but the rom is so god damn huge for seemingly no reason whatsoever. Every one of its features you can find in Cyanogen and MIUI in a rom that takes up maybe 90mb max. I can live with the slower 3G until someone finds a way to make that god damn rom smaller. Why the hell is it 350mb? That leaves less than 100mb of internal memory.
Here in central Florida, I am lucky if I get 200 kbps, most of the time less... I run a rooted stock ROM.
Yeah I'm in va. And my 3g is super slow too .. so I call Sprint to see if they was having any problems no problems but they did offer me a new phone..

This I very much understand, before I went AOSP I tried a few other roms and they were in the 180-200mb range, like Myns Warm 2.2 and Fresh Rom. But there's seriously like 180-200mb MORE to Synergy than there is to those other, very full featured sense roms. What exactly is it that makes Synergy worthwhile? Everyone seems to LOVE it, but I can't quite tell what is in there that makes the rom worth taking up so much space. Maybe I needed to play with it a little longer, but all I could see were a couple of widgets and a new notification bar. And I hate Rosie, so I'd wanna run LP or ADW on top of it, basically negating all of those widgets.
True idk why it is so darn big either but I have learned that if yu go to settings-applications, and move the high MB apps to sd it frees up alot of space on your internal memory.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
I'm still new to the rom but if I took a guess at it, it's because the rom moves extremely fast and smooth. You got to think of internal memory like ram on a computer, just because you have a huge amount of ram doesn't mean your apps will run fast. This rom is the fastest and the smoothest I've used since I became a flashaholic. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
300-400kbps is the norm for me on a AOSP. Sense i'm usually around 1mbps

Anyone seeing improved 3G speeds?

With the start of Sprint's "Network Vision" multi-modal cell site build out, I, like many others are hoping that means faster 3G speeds.
I understand coverage will improve, theoretically speed should too. It's still very early on in the new development, but has anyone seen faster speeds?
I haven't seen any improvement. I don't think many are. Check out the boards on sprint's website. Nothing but negative vibes.

My speeds in NC had been 1Mb/s and faster until late last week, now they are always less than 400Kb/s Down and 30Kb/s Up. Tonight it's much slower on the download side. Sprint really has to kick NV in to high gear or lose a lot of customers soon.

What part of NC are you at? I'm in Raleigh/Cary and they have been absolutely terrible lately.

Yeah, Tempe sucks too for speed. Though I've found that I'm able to stream stuff as long as I can get 100kbits or so.

Me too but I'm in the middle of nowhere sharing a tower with about 20 houses in its range after 1am til about 5am I can get over 3mbps. We just had an infrastructure upgrade and a new tower in the last week cuz some dumbass truck driver fell asleep at the wheel and smashed thru the tower. Last night I had 2.2mbps upload and 4.1 down while tethering according to my network monitor
Edit: and I was on 3g cuz we don't have 4g yet, apparently they put the hardware in while replacing the tower but have not activated it for use yet. Although on a few occasions I have been able to connect to 4g in the last week probably while Sprint had it powered for "testing"
Edit 2: I just checked and have been upgraded to PRL: 60683

so you think the ROM is whats causing the problem?
Had the same issue after flashing a different Rom (don't remember which one, sorry) however recently flashed IceColdInsomnia and my 4g speeds seem to be back to normal.

Switch to 2G only and run a speed test.
I got half a Mb down and up on "4g" with stock radio....
my speeds are still good but they are slower slightly. I wonder if Tmo is getting congested with the new monthly 4G plan

There are a couple of things you can try for slow data speeds. A different radio/RIL pair may help, and you might also try the rcdata.img fix for TMO. First post in the Sensation radio/RIL thread has more info. I do not know if it is compatible with the MyTouch, we just figured it out for the Sensation. It is flashed through bootloader with a PG58IMG.zip file that contains a file named rcdata.img. There are two different versions, then you match a build.prop setting to it.
check it out
My speeds were around 4mbps when I first got '4G' but now I don't even get 1mbps. I think its stupid to be paying for something you dont get.

I'm getting an average of 900-1100 ping , 0.22 mbps Download and 1.21 Mbps upload. Currently in the Bronx NY by Westchester.
