Note: How to stop stock recovery from overwriting custom one! - Nexus One General

After the 2.3.3 update I noticed that the stock recovery, overwrites my Amon_ra . So that forced me to fastboot and install recovery everytime i wanted to something. ( This problem doesn't exist on pre-rooted stock rom 2.3.3 )
All credit goes to Amon_ra for his help
My of you might know this already, but i saw that some people were having trouble with this-
How to start-
1. Install ROM manager
Flash your custom recovery through ROM manager
Click to collapse
2. Install Root explorer
After installing root explorer, as soon as you open it, you'll find a file called init.rc . Open it in text editor and find a line that calls stock recovery.Put a "#" (without quotes) in front of that script and save the file.
Click to collapse
Walla you'll have custom recovery!
Hope this helps

Technically you only have to remove the shell script file that is doing the actual checking and replacing of the recovery.

Back to stock
Does that means that if we aren't modify the SPL protection, we can re-stock completly a phone without any clue that it have been rooted/moded one day?

Yeah. There are several ways to get a phone back to stock without any evidence. If it was rooted with a hack, and the bootloader isn't unlocked you can find several tutorials on various ways to do it.

Can you write out what the line says please.

You can look in Wiki and:
1) download a script I made for flashing in custom recovery - removes those files.
2) see the lines in Recovery installation guides.

Flash custom recovery on an already rooted Aria with clockworks recovery?

is it possible to switch to another custom recovery after I already got clockworks?
I tried unrevoked but its stuck in the reboot (I believe its trying to root my aria again)
not sure what youre trying to do.... i believe Clockwork is the only Recovery for rooted phones. if you want to flash a custom ROM, well that is something else altogether. please be specific as to what you want to flash to the phone. include a link to the flash too
I was trying to flash psfreedom recovery rom from here
http://psfreedom.com/wiki/HTC_Aria
I believe the method on that website was for unrooted arias without clockworks

To flash a different custom recovery on your Aria, you need to rename the zip file LIBEIMG.ZIP on the SD card and boot in HBOOT (Power on the phone by holding down VOL DOWN and the Power Button). When it boots to the HBOOT screen you should see text stating that it found LIBEIMG.ZIP and is installing it.
awesome. now before I go ahead, is there any clockworkx recovery image I can revert back to?

I'm curious, what recovery are you talking about?
thanks for including the link. the instructions are clear.... Root IS required, Clockwork recovery is recommended, the Freedom Aria flash appears to be a custom ROM.
once the phone is Rooted, boot into Recovery, make a Nandroid backup, and flash downloaded zip file from SD card.
if you need help Rooting, there is all sorts of good methods available on this site. I use the Unrevoked method myself, but it works best on Linux or Mac OS

hmm I think you are looking at the old method which is a custom rom
The new one is a custom recovery which brings me to the question as I dont think you can flash a custom recovery in the clockwork custom recovery.
its possible im looking at the wrong thing, but far as i can tell it states "Recovery Custom ROM" which is totally different from Custom Recovery ROM
From link posted above:
"Update can be installed in recovery mode in Psfreedom settings menu via Update (local) or Update (net) if you have configured your wifi connection. Put the file on your SDCARD and install it.

I have similar questions. I was trying to update my version of clockwork also using unrevoked again, but couldn't get it to work. I guess my questions are:
1. Is there any benefit in updating to a newer version of clockwork? My current version is 2.0.x.x and I believe the latest one is 2.5.0.4.
2. Will this same method work to do so? Can I rename the latest clockwork .zip file like this and get it updated?
I thought using the flash clockwork option in ROM Manager would do it, but it doesn't. If I reboot from ROM Manager it goes to the newer version, but if I reboot otherwise it goes to my original. The couple times I've used it, there appears to be maybe some different features/options in the newer one and I feel like I might be missing out on something!
What's the difference with this recovery?

These are probably two different things. once you got the recovery rom flashed you can upgrade it in recovery mode (hence its different from original clockwork recovery)
Ok bro, I didn't see much info about it so I'm gonna take your word for it.
@brswattt, far as I can tell this is " basically" used for jailbreaking the ps3.
@armyengineer;
you can use unrEVOked to flash the new recovery. if youre a Windows user, download the unrEVOked tool and run the .exe as Administrator. also make sure there are no conflicting s/w on the PC such as HTC Sync and you have all the drivers installed(HBoot, ADB drivers, etc.)

This still isn't working for me. Everything appears to go well at the start, then I get:
Waiting for root...(safe to restart if this doesn't work)
At which point the only way I can restart is to pull my battery. After doing so, it reboots and I get:
This was a triumph
It is not, however, any such thing. After another minute I get this:
Internal error: couldn't find misc.
So I've still got my original version of clockwork, 2.0.1.3, despite the fact that ROM Manager is telling me I have 2.5.0.1. I'm obviously missing something here.
BTW, if it matters I'm running CM 6.1.0

Although there is a ClockworkMod 2.5.0.4 version, I don't think it is for the Aria. According to ClockworkMod ROM Manager, 2.5.0.1 is the most current one for the Aria so I am believing what ROM Manager is telling me since it is written by the same the vendor.
I have tried CM 6.1.0
original HTC Aria 2.1 International Rom
and FR001 RC1
all no go. I think it has something to do with the phone already been rooted and has clockworks installed which makes unrevoked unhappy

OK, let's start from the beginning. You asked about installing an alternate recovery (PSFreedom recovery), but apparently it has its own installation procedure that needs to be run on an unrooted Aria.
What you need is to find just the PSFreedom recovery and copy it to your SD called in a file called LIBEIMG.ZIP and that is how you need to install it on a root phone that has ClockworkMod. Perhaps you need to go back to the PSFreedom thread and ask if a LIBEIMG.ZIP can be produced that can be flashed from HBOOT to replace ClockworkMod.
Looks like everything you need is located in the PSFreedom wiki:
http://psfreedom.com/wiki/HTC_Aria
I got a recovery.bin which is suppose to be used with unrevoked.
are you talking about the same one if I just compress it into a zip file?

[HOWTO] Restore to stock for root users and non-root users UPDATED 5/17/2011

Stop, listen. Follow my directions, if you fail to follow directions I will no longer help you. Don't PM me and ask. If you screw up ask in the thread.
Rooted Users (Non - Root Users scroll down below):
MR1 RUU
http://www.multiupload.com/KU7GSF2EY0
PG05IMG_MR1_no_hboot.zip - c64b4367086fff4f51ec3d5d766a0456
Bootloader (FLASH THIS LAST) FLASHING THIS WITHOUT SUCESSFULLY FLASHING THE ABOVE FILE WILL CAUSE A SECURITY WARNING

abda920f3e159fb05c00d8c54a5b8768 - PG05IMG_hboot_1.4.0000.zip
Flash the above PG05IMG_MR1_no_hboot.zip to restore everything to stock + OTA BUT still will have the s-off bootloader.
Rename PG05IMG_MR1_no_hboot.zip as PG05IMG.zip, and flash through hboot (like in the root guide).
To restore the bootloader, rename PG05IMG_hboot_1.4.0000.zip as PG05IMG.zip and flash through the bootloader. DO NOT FLASH THIS unless you are absolutely sure PG05IMG_MR1_no_hboot.zip flashed to your device, without issue.
Now you are done, enjoy. If you screwed up, and got a security warning contact me, don't stress. Then again, don't screw up.
Non root users wanting to return to 1.12.605.6 (Stock, pre OTA) can continue below:
NOT FOR ROOT USERS
Taken from AndroidPolice: [Tutorial] How To "Un-Root" The HTC ThunderBolt And Return It To Stock. Please check the site out.
One of the most popular questions about rooting the ThunderBolt is how to undo the process and return to stock, which renews your eligibility for customer support. Well, here you go:
Instructions:
Please read the whole tutorial first, and pay attention to every detail. Note that your battery needs to be charged to at least 40% at the beginning of the process, and remember to check the MD5 sums of all downloaded files before diving in. As always, neither Android Police nor Team AndIRC are responsible for any damage this may cause to your phone, and, needless to say, returning to stock means you will no longer be able to use root apps like ShootMe and Titanium Backup.
First, download the following files:
Stock firmware (MD5 sum: 7141f5620f6128af77d50587e341f4b0)
exploits.zip (MD5 sum: 3b359efd76aac456ba7fb0d6972de3af)
Next, push exploits.zip and misc.img.
Code:
adb push misc.img /data/local/
adb push busybox /data/local/
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/busybox
To gain root and flash misc.img:
Code:
adb shell
su
/data/local/busybox md5sum /data/local/misc.img
If the output is anything other than "c88dd947eb3b36eec90503a3525ae0de," stop and start over again.
Now let’s write misc.img:
Code:
dd if=/data/local/misc.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17
Rename "PG05IMG_Mecha_VERIZON_WWE_1.12.605.6_Radio_1.16.00.0223r_NV_8k_1.41_9k_1.64_
release_174685_signed.zip" to "PG05IMG.zip" before placing it on your SD card.
Finally, reboot into bootloader mode by entering the following command. Allow the stock firmware to flash.
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
You’re done – your phone should now be stock, S-ON.
Bookmarking this, just in case. Thanks, Jcase!
Looks like I'll be going back to Froyo for now. I believe the Sense in GB leak is older than the stock on the device.. plus.. camera doesn't work, weather in clock widget doesn't work.. quadrant score is pretty low.. As for now.. I don't see any solid reason to upgrade to GB.. (though I wish I did).. sigh!

First of all Jcase, thanks for the time, I know it's valuable to the community.
So just so I'm clear.... All I need to do is remove "hboot_7630_1.04.0000_110223.nb0" from the pre ota ruu or is there more to be altered than just that?
And if that's all I have to do is flash those seperate, could you tell me briefly why you could not just flash all at once? Would it not flash the rest of it if the stock hboot was installed first?

Yes, because some radios seem to cause the files to flash in different orders, doing it like this keeps me from having to make multiple versions.

Nexus S i9020a + CM7

Can someone please direct me to the a step by step guide on how to Root and put CM7 on the Nexus S i9020a variant? Most of the stickies are for the T-mobile version and Its getting to be a bit confusing on which guide to follow. Please help this noobie!!!
use gingerbreak then rom manager it's that simple
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
Quick note once you install CM7 do not use the 2g/3g feature it will break your 3g
Break 3g? as in damage it permanently? Thanks for the link for gingerbreak so basically that will root my nexus s then I can install CM 7 with out any special instructions since it has different radio compared to the tmobile version?
i used gingerbreak then rom manager to install clockwork recovery and CM7. Do some reading the 3g bug for I9020A has been discussed a few times. Just stay away from the 2g/3g toggle and everything will be fine. I don't think it permanently breaks it just is a pain in the A to fix. I have a I9020A and this was the simplest way I've found.
don't we have to flash a clockwork compatible kernel first, before flashing cm7?
Also, doesn't clockwork rom manager fail on sns? I have cwr from the main stickies, but rom manager doesn't see it (it works), and can't download roms, unless cwr from rom manager, which I heard fails.

So I downloaded CM7 7.0.2 - and gapps - flashed in order (nandroid first) and voila! no hastle! This ROM is great!
No, those are the only steps i took
CM7 comes with its own AOSP kernel. Just flash the rom, you'll get the kernel bundled. (Of course you can always use a great kernel from the developers thread) don't forget to flash gapps.

Follow one of the root guides, all you really need to do is unlock the bootloader and install Clockwork Recovery.
Once that is done, download the zip for cm7 and use CWM to flash it.

Agreed, but it's a matter of getting the correct CWM image for our phones. Also, for people who are setting up their phones for the first time, the drivers needed for fastboot need to be installed, fastboot/SDK needs to be downloaded etc...
Hence why i referenced the rooting guides.

No only name the RUUs pc36img do NOT name ROMs you download off xda as that.
You can flash those in your custom recovery. (Go to your bootloader, select recovery, select flash zip from sdcard, select the rom and flash)

Then go into the recovery and flash whatever custom rom you want how I said.
so you are saying whatever the download was named originally then thats what i should have left it and installed it as?
Yes, leave the Rom named what it was then boot into recovery and flash the romnamehere.zip from there.

The reason I wanted you to run a ruu is because you had said you flashed something and it wont go past the bootloader.
Running the ruu returns it to complete stock.
Ok now i am redownloading Netflix-AllianceROM-2.1....seems i transfered the original to the sd card and that card is now blank it appears talk about frustrating. after it downloads ill install it in recovery with that name just as it is...fingers crossed it will work.
Download File
Rename to PC36IMG (all caps) +++++++THIS IS WHERE I CHANGED THE FILE !!!!
Place on root of sd card
turn off phone
Put into bootloader power button/vol down
Bootloader will read the update
Follow prompts yes & yes
reboot phone!
Remove file from sd or it will read the file over and over everytime you boot yur phone!
Enjoy oldskool simple flawless recovery!
Done flash away!
So I followed those instructions but I think the file he was talking about renaming was the recovery file or something else? Anyway it confused me.

Hi!
Any one click root options with the NVFLASH? Any links to this app?
1) Would z4root work?
2) Any zip i can simply load and update using the recovery mode of Asus to install clockworkmod?
Thanks!

NVFlash is one click from the start.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123429
Just download a .tar.bz2 (some are outdated) then download a ROM and flash it on top. Depending what you flash, you might want to wipe.
Hey,
- Whats to do with .tar.bz2 ?
- How do I flash the NVFLASH?
- If I dont want WIPE? I just want root the stock ROM and put kernel which supports OC without wipe it? Since it comes with custom language packs and support for locals.
Thanks!

.tar.bz2: use winrar to extract it. Cut all the files and paste it into the root of /nvflash/ (you do this to make NVFlash flash it)
-Watch the video on the NVFlash thread that I linked.
-If you want to use the stock ROM. Then you have to find that thread that lets you root. You could also use NVFlash and then flash the rooted version of the stock.
If you could click the "thanks" button it'll be most appreciated! thanks
Using the search function would be VERY helpfull.

>> Is it the guide? http://androidroot.mobi/2011/06/13/nvflash-on-asus-transformer/ simply looks pretty long for one click hehe
2) Would it remove my stock rom? I only want root and install CWM without remove my stock rom or settings.
3) Would Z4ROOT work?

2. Yes NVFlash will flash a ROM of your choice. You will have to download the .tar.bz2 of the ROM you want (note these are VERY limited and you don't have much choice. So what you might have to do is download a .tar.bz2 of any ROM, then go into Clockwork and just flash another ROM [same old way with flashable zips]).
NVFlash will: Root, Install Clockwork. And yes that is it. It's not long, its one click.
Pretty much: download a .tar.bz2.
extract it, cut it into the root of /nvflash/
install NVIDIA drivers in /nvflash/
double click!
done.
2) Yes it would remove your stock ROM. If thats the case then you need to use another method that I'm not familiar with. NVFlash is the easiest way.
If there's a stock 8.4.4.11 with root, you could use that after flashing. But you won't get OTAs most likely. But people often put the OTAs in a flashable zip so OTAs are useless.
3. Don't know what Z4Root is.
I got my transformer a few days ago and let it upgrade over the air to 8.4.4.11
I then read this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125714) and decide to root it. It';s a few steps but thats because it is written out in absolute detail.
It just roots that particular firmware, and installs CWM. It took less than 10 minutes.

looks good!
So basically:
1) You got any suggested .tar.bz2. link to download directly?
2) I simply connecting the ASUS to my windows laptop and finding nvflash folder there, extracting the .tar.bz2. into this folder?
3) I click the bat file from windows.
4) I've some custom rom with clockworkmod working. now I can load any rom i want with clockworkmod.
-- right?
-- I can using NVFLASH backup my stock rom?

No NVFlash doesn't backup anything. Read what kibje said, that might be what you're looking for if you want to remain stock
1. Yes
2. No, you have to put the Transformer in APX mode (read the guide again)
3. In this mode, Windows will try and find a driver for it. Manually set it to /nvflash/ whatever it says in the guide.
3. Double click guide
4. Yup
