Root - Yay Koush! - Xoom General

http://www.koushikdutta.com/2011/02/motorola-xoom-rooted.html

Yep was going to post this myself but didn't have enough posts to link outside XDA..
Grats Koush

That didn't take long. Of course, according to Koush, it isn't fully functional yet if you don't have a recovery or ROM manager support.
I wonder what the devs will unlock with root...

Good news and good info. XD
But does this means that we are not getting the boot soon?
As I mentioned, I have a working recovery, but will not be releasing it until Google or I get the SD card working.

Here's my question. Being a google experience device, does the xoom automatically install apps when you wipe the OS? The Nexus One did right, and all the CyanogenMods.

yes it does automatically installs apps

Modaco alpha3 test rom is up

Here is the link to the page Thanx P!! SCROLL DOWN TO POST 59!!! No Wifi though...Be thankful folks. ...And yes IT IS A WORKING DESIRE ALPHA ROM....NO BOOT LOOPS FOR ME
To the Mods....Just sharing the love
Something to live for...
Okay So of course if your here is beacuse your waiting for modaco to release the new alpha, well alpha three was released as you see above and with the alpha2 boot image all the communications are locked down.
Here are some screen shots of this Beauty. I will Spread them around once everything is up and running. Also I have placed the alpha2 img.. for you to download...
Just unzip this and flash this via fastboot only after you have just flashed the alpha** rom.. K?

Its loads the flash but so far i can't get a video to play. It says Video unavailable or something. Im sure someone will get a way to work. I don't think it will be too smooth though honestly.
Little By little we pile up in here now, and THIS IS GENERAL SO MOD, LEAVE IT BE.... Now, I say that it is a good move.. I notcied that if i flash the alpha2 boot it works as its on but if you reboot were back to the white screen so, guess this is being worked out.
Besides that.. I kept a Nadroid of the one without alpha2 and then run the one with it. I have not switched back to another rom SINCE!!!
Addition: If you have the alpha 3 rom and you flash the alpha2 img.. you will end up back at the white screen upon reboot.. No biggie, just have to revert to your alpha3 nandroid (WHICH SHOULD HAVE MADE BY NOW) and flash it again. So runn it lightly until P comes through tomorrow, well a few hours for him, and see where this goes...

Hey, How can I get this to be a Nandroid so I can Megupload this... This way people can run it with everything done.. I mean apps, paid, free, better keyboard, root explorer, jesus the list rides...
I wanted to do that do everyone can have a one click solution and just run the rom right from when they sign in with everything...
Just asking...
Honestly, I see flash in this as in or out thing.. I searched on google for best flash sites and got some water site, marc ecko, etc... This showed on the device with all of it working.. Many sites i should work.. I just dont know where the median is on this. I cant tell.
Hey JesusCat could you please link us to an alpha3 download?
It looks like Google Voice isn't working for calls, I still dial out with my normal number not my GV number.
I don't believe you would be able to post that nandroid on here in accordance to the rules on warez.

Nandroid Back Up
Okay, My wife sort of talked to me and made sense.. Instead of doing it with everything I will get it to where you have to sign in and download all your apps or crawl back from SD. I will get a Nandroid Up in the Morning as soon as I see something from P. This way you could have it this simple way too. I guess i will be helping him out with a simple one click push of his mods...

How would this be different from having to wipe and flash the ROM? The main reason I am saying this, is because on the G1, restoring nandroids from another G1 would result in some hardware issues sometimes, so I wonder if this would persist on the N1.

Well, this is the case.. It all works the same... All nexus are the same, depending on personal daily abuse... I could do this and get it done, but, after thinking, discussing and addressing the situation.. i would say there is no diff in flashing versus the nandroid. I just wanted to make it easier, but, as my lady said, lets let it be Modaco's game...
Only his..
I can report Orb works both via browser & the new
Orb app, wifi only so far, but that may be my server settings.

[Q] Clockwork Recovery

any chances of us getting it?
Contact KOUSH from the forums here. He made it and ported it to the galaxy s phones so he might be able to help..
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
so after getting in the irc room for koush i was directed to http://www.koushikdutta.com/2010/10/porting-clockwork-recovery-to-new.html
i must say that his blog is very appropraitely named.
I'm trying to get my ubuntu box setup to do the stuff he's asking but my phone isn't here yet it's in the mail. (i'm hoping this one has a clean esn.............)
i do however have my Sylvania Tablet that i would love a custom recovery for and am a little lost on the guide as well. I'm completely new to any kind of android dev work at all. and have very little programming background.
I'm enough of a nerd though that i feel i should be able to tackle anything i set my mind to. so when my interecept gets here tomorrow i'll be headed down this road and seeing where i end up.

I have tried Rom Manager, and there is no Clockwork option for the intercept in it.
CM01 Custom Recovery
CM01 Custom Recovery by Inxane works well for our Intercepts.

Why don't any of the MT4G devs use ROM Manager?

Only the CM team does. I wanted to fool around with some eye-candy.
read a few reasons before.....all I do now a days is just download the rom directly from the phone. Move the file to root of sd card and go ahead flash away. Works out well for me, if any issues just nandroid back to previous.

You would have to ask the devs of specifics ROMs you are interested in directly. Maybe they are too busy to support integration in a 3rd party app? Maybe they don't want their ROM to be "that" point-and-click as it would cause even more support requests than they already receive?
No one knows but them. Really, it's not hard to download a zip (even from your phone browser!), reboot to recovery, and hit flash.

Yeah....it's WAY better to release an add-on fix and make everyone try to figure out how to fix the dev's **** up than it is for the dev to just release a WORKING VERSION!!!!

Chainsdd is a busy person, and the su issues don't affect everyone. I haven't had a problem with it since 3.0.2. You should be happy that he even works on this at all instead of acting like an ungrateful twit.

Exactly, don't flame a developer for creating an awesome application that contains 1 bug in an update.
I also had the bug, I updated to 3.0.1, but the update failed, and I lost my root access. But c'mon, just download the su-update zip file, flash it, reboot and you're done.
As the developer said, it's impossible to test about 700 devices every single update. SuperUser is the most important application for rooted users if you think about it, don't flame the developer for making 1 fault.
thanks for the fix, glad to get rid of the SU binary outdated msg.

TWRP 2.0 (Update 3-8)..Release is soon

Hey guys just wanted to share this with you. I am working with Team Win to get a touch recovery on the A500. So far is still inop, but progress is bring made. We are gonna give another go tomorrow so wish us luck. Will keep you all posted.
Updates
1-5-12: So we are finding the using the tablet interface makes the recovery too large for our recovery partition. Team Win is probably going to have to build the recovery without an interface and then I will create a flashable zip that will flash the recovery as well as place a ui.zip on the external sdcard under twrp/theme(we can then just replace that ui.zip for different themes that come out, got a cool ICS one in mind already). The battery precentage is working but we are still working on the touch screen. New test build coming today and will have active logging enabled so that we can see more of what is happening, if touch is being recongnized but TWRP 2.0 is just not reacting to it. It's coming along though.
1-6-12: SO we got TWRP 2.0 up and running for the most part. Touch screen works and most all functions work. Get backup failures and is not sized properly but we are really, really close. Did install a rom and booted just fine. Release will be real soon, possible monday. Still have to get the resolution figured out as well, but what we have so far is very usable.
2-17.. So work on this has slowed way down due to dev on teamwin side has other projects that he is working on that is more important to him(which there is no problem with that, would just like to get this project completely going). But TWRP 2.0 has gone completely opensource. So just wondering if we can tackle this and get it up and running. We are on #twrp on freenode irc usually everyday M-F around 11am-1pm Mountain Time. If you are able and willing to help, please come and give us some fresh ideas.
3-8. Everything is working and is ready for release very soon. Some final testing and will be release. Data/media fixed and flexrom fixed. PLEASE HOLD!!
3-13. New features being added. We will have the ability to toggle back and forth between internal and external for backup location. Doing some code clean up and making sure all features are working properly. Have used it to install many roms/flashes and have yet to have any issues. It's coming along nicely. Huge thanks to Dees_Troy on TeamWin for his work on this. You da man!
I run TWRP 2.0 on my Evo 3D. Would love to see it on my A500. So much better then all the button presses to navigate through the recovery menu.
I would love to see TWRP 2.0 on the A500. I have it on my Sensation and think it is some of the absolute best development to come out of the Android development community recently. Best of luck guys.
Muahahaha. Can't wait!!!

Updated OP with some status update.
I used a steam recovry on my captivate that was full touch and really liked it. I dont remember any sort of oddities to get it running. Maybe talk to one of them and see how they got theirs set up.
if i can make one request i sed it on my phone and it was awesome. One thing the when selecting ROMS the font is small and often hard to hit the right one
IIRC you need to have the "itsmagic" script run at boot. When I came to the A500 scene it was already figured out so I'm not 100% sure on what it was or what exactly it does but I would recommend looking in to it. I'm sure some more senior A500 developers could help with its purpose.
Sooooooo close!
Updated OP, she is almost ready!
That is looking sweet, I like that 2nd gui alot better than the first one. A lot cleaner. rstuckmaier brought up an important point, are you including the "Its Magic" script in the recovery. I thought that was needed to fix the checksum values.
I don't see where any of the new recoveries do anything with "itsmagic" during the install process. The new GPL complient does nothing with itsmagic. Nor do thors.
Here are some screens of the boot up screen and a ICS theme.

Yes I will, no need to just have small talk about it in the DEV thread untill she is ready to Rock&Roll. I am hoping that this will breather new life into this thread and Iconia A500 communtiy. I know I have not done a whole lot, but plan on doing more. 1st-TWRP 2.0, 2nd- New Galaxy Rom.

"itsmagic" is needed to recalculate the ROM checksum for the encrypted bootloader, which is verified every time you boot. Either you need to execute it (and Thors DOES do that, just read the install instructions for his 1.6 V2 recovery), or you need to incorporate its code into your recovery.
If you flash a new rom without recalculating the checksum afterwards, the checksum verification will fail and you won't be able to boot, essentially bricking the device.

If you manually install thors kernels then yes you do use itsmagic. But his flash script does not use it nor is it included in the flash zip either. I ensure you it will be tested thoroughly before its release. I have flashed virtuous galaxy with it and it booted fine.
