I actually prefer to use the email app. Problem is, the email app doesn't seem to download updates until I open it (even with it on ignore in Task MGR). Email app set to download every 10 mins. The Gmail app, however, seems to auto download updates.
Any seen or know of a solution?

The Gmail app supports push notifications, which means as soon as you get an email, you'll get it on your phone. But with the email app, it resorts to polling (checking for new messages every 10 minutes) so it refreshes only when you open it
Lucky you, but my gmail app doesn't do anything. I feel that its always off since I don't get any email notification on ie.
Makes sense. I just like the look of the email app better, but I guess u need to stick with gmail for the push ability.

Go to Settings in the Gmail app and make sure that Email Notifications is checked. That's the whole point of using Gmail compared to Hotmail/Yahoo.. (atleast for now)
It annoys me how you can't select multiples in th stock app. I use K9, it has colours (including led flash) for each account, push, and most importantly, multiple select.

Can the SE email app be removed without causing any problems?

What about in Settings/Data Sync - I think you need Google Sync, and then Google Mail Sync selected too.
settings ---> data synchronization ---> synchronize with Gmail
right, I forgot to check that back after the 100th times of rooting.
Thank you,

nice one thx thats fixed my issue didnt even have to ask lol
I hope someone can help me. I've rooted, added Gapps without a problem. I just can't get my Google Contacts to show up.
Is there anyway you do this. I have tried a few Contact.apks to no avail. I've set permissions.
What do you all think?
Thank you,
John
You don't seem to be able to use the Google Contacts app, it doesn't work because it has phone hooks that aren't available on the KF (unless there is a tablet specific version which I haven't seen). You'll need to use the built in Contacts app, which will sync fine with Google if you have the sync adapter.
Here is the version I ripped off my phone - GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk, drop this in /system/app, and set the permissions to rw-r--r--
You are my hero. . . for today. Unless CM7 comes out today.
If you have an Android phone, there are a lot of files you can test out in your KF. I moved a couple files from my Droid 3 to the KF to increase functionality. Including the CalendarSyncService.
Slightly off topic but does anybody know what files handle the "Add shortcut" option in the CarDock? I tried a couple of the Application... files but none worked. Thanks!
One other thing to mention that I've found a fix for is that as well as syncing just "My Contacts", it also syncs "Other Contacts" as well. Other contacts are people you've sent emails to that aren't necessarily in your contacts list already. I just didn't care to see these on my KF, so there is a two step process for getting rid of them if you so desire.
1. Tick and then delete all the "Other Contacts" via the Gmail web interface, making sure that any of the ones you need to keep are created in "My Contacts".
2. In Mail Settings under the General tab there is a setting called "Create contacts for auto-complete". Set this to "I'll add contacts myself".
This should clear the Kindle Fire (assuming you have added the sync apk mentioned above) of the rouge contacts and ensure that any new ones don't get a Contact added under "Other Contacts".
Has anyone gotten this working for the Google Calendar app?
There was some sort of Amazon Calendar.apk and CalendarProvider.apk in the system app folder but I overwrote those with the Google ones from my phone. Maybe I need those original files to get it to work? Can anyone pull them from their system/app folder and upload a copy?

Yup, it's working perfectly. Grab the two .apk's from this post and follow the instructions.
Did you rename the google .apks, or just chose to replace the existing Amazon ones when tyring to install? Sorry, I would pull the original Amazon ones for you but I'm at work and left my KF at home. If they're not up by the time I get home I'll put them up.

Here's the CalendarProvider.apk and for some reason I don't have an AmazonCalendar.apk in /system/app. My /data folder is completely empty (unrooted, so idk if that's why it's empty) so it may be in there. Maybe someone else can post that one? If not I'll root again tonight or tomorrow and post it for you.
Sorry, I'm not gonna have time right now. Oh, and btw this is the first time I've tried pulling an .apk off the KF so please let me know if I didn't do it correctly.
It worked, thank you!
Cool, glad I could help.

Btw, I don't care much for it because I use the Calendar most in Agenda view, but does your month view look like this with an orange Android?
Edit: Nvm, there was a copy of calendar.apk in system/app that wasn't supposed to be there and removing that fixed it

Woah, no it doesn't. It's just the standard month view.
tried this and follow every step, still can't get contacts and calendar to sync.
gmail doens't really sync either, have to manually refresh each time. is it because I have an account set up under the default email client?
I have copied the calendar sync adapter and contacts sync adapter to /system/app and chmod 0644 it. then i rebooted and installed calendar.apk normally. doesn't appear to work.
gmail I have the option for sync for my email set to on, but I don't think it's working.
Am I missing something? Market is working fine, apps install normally.
Are you sure that the permissions for the GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk and GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk files in system/app look like this..?

What app is that that you are using to change permissions? thanks.
It's Root Explorer (a must have for root users).
Does this work?

For Calendar: When you go into Menu>More>Calendars are the calendars your trying to sync visible and synced? It took a few minutes for my events to properly load up.
Gmail: From inbox, Menu>Accounts>Menu>Account settings>[email protected] and make sure Gmail is selected (as well as any other google servies you want synced). My gmail was turned off initially. I also made the mistake of thinking Menu>More>Settings was the only sync option for gmail.
Don't have contacts set up, sorry.

My experience is, after setting amazon's default e-mail app,
gmail.app also can use contacts.
But I don't know which one app works.
Maybe either GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk or amazon contacts works.
Does anyone get a grey bar at the top of their Google Calendar that partially covers the first row of dates in the month view and the midnight hour block in the other views? How do I get rid of it?
I am also struggling with calendar sync. My other apps recognize my account (gmail/reader/music), but my calendars don't show up in settings.
Device is rooted, permissions applied, and contacts are synced.
I installed the Google Account Sync Services. It'll sync GMAIL just fine, but the notifications bar force closes every time a new email comes through. The bar won't stop force closing and re-opening until I check the GMAIL and mark that message as read (or untick SYNC for Gmail).
Sync is obviously working because it detects the email coming through immediately....however there's something going on with the notifications bar displaying it.
Any fixes for this???????
Yeah it's been posted on here a couple of times, either disable notifications for Gmail through the Kindle Settings menu or install Gmail 4.0.5 from the link below which works with notifications, that's what I did a few weeks back as I didn't like not having them on.
It doesn't have some of the fancy new features of the latest builds but works just fine.

cybertlc,
This is the way Gmail writes to the notification bar, up until version 4.0.5 we were stuck and had to disable Gmail notifications in the Gmail setting. This was a workaround that was fine but we all knew it was a band-aide. We sent a Bug Report to Google and they released a fix in version 4.0.5. Just in case some people are blocked from the Android Drawer site, here is an alternative link: Gmail Version 4.0.5(Dropbox) or Gmail Version 4.0.5(Ubuntu One).
If you have Root, just copy Gmail.apk to /system/app - change the permissions to: User Read Write Group: Read and Others: Read
Reboot and wala, Gmail is now fixed.
Just in case there is a person who does not have Gmail installed we have left a copy of AccountAndSyncSettings.apk here too, just copy both Gmail.apk and AccountAndSyncSettings.apk to /system/app - change the permissions to: User Read Write Group: Read and Others: Read
Does anyone know what application keeps causing the Galaxy S4 to show a Facebook dialogue in the notification bar that brings you to the browser and says "sign in to sync application"
It basically asking for a sign in to Facebook so Galaxy S4 can have permissions, I already have the Facebook app installed so I dont need this to keep asking me. Is anyone aware of how to stop this from happening?
It might be the app named "sns" - go into setting >more >app manager >all, locate sns, which has a Facebook logo icon, and try disabling.

That was it, good call!
One of the first things I did after Google installed all my apps from my previous phone, I added all of my accounts (Gmail, email, Dropbox, and of course Facebook). Sometime after adding the Facebook account (perhaps after a restart?), I started getting the same prompt. I went through it and signed in once, and realized it seems to be just some attempt by the SGS4 to work more closely with Facebook or something (perhaps a single-sign-on thing?). I removed the account, but then it started bugging me again.
So I went and opened my Facebook app, and then also logged into my Facebook Messenger app. After this, the prompts went away and haven't come back yet. *shrug*

The prompt was separate from the Facebook app, it was related to the application mentioned in the above post called "sns" if you disable this that prompt does not come back!

I apologize to post here as since I am reading on the same issue, I also would like to ask why when i view a picture in a facebook group and then press the back button on my S4, it directs me to my news feed. Shouldn't I be sent back to the group feed? feeling annoyed with this.
Thanks for this. It was driving me crazy
Thanks heaps!! It was annoying me everytime I restarted the phone.
Thanks
If you don't receive notifications at gmail set it as your default email client.
App management -> default apps
I don't know why they decided that by default apps shouldn't be allow to send notifications.
But you can actually just go to Gmail in App Management > Manage Notifications > Allow notifications.
On Global rom notifications are set allowed by default
I have the notifications allowed and I don't receive gmail notifications. There is no email client option in my default app settings... I have the EU device and RMX1931EX_11_A.09 firmware
it looks like removing gmail updates and installing them again has helped

This worked for me, makes this OS a bit more bearable.
Go to the settings in Gmail, select your mail address, select notifications and select all for notifying for all mails. And go to inbox notification and check notify for every message.
If unable to receive, try to uninstall updates from Gmail and check if notification is coming on base version.
I've tried every solution ever written on the internet and none have resolved this issue.
It makes no sense that an essential service like Gmail should be suffering such an issue on a key feature.
I had tried everything, still doent work. Now I'm using outlook but other clients works just fine
I've just installed the latest version of Gmail from apkmirror and notifications have suddenly started working again.
May be worth trying it.

Well if you're still looking for solution, Go to Setting>App Management> Auto launch apps and enable Gmail from the list. Also got enable Background and notification toggles from app info of Gmail.
