[Q] Updated to Froyo, Now 6 Gigs of music/pictures gone? - Epic 4G General

Also, my alarm clock isn't working. Any ways that you could think of to get around it? It doesn't even scan the media card when disconnecting from the USB.

Plug your micro sd card from your phone to a Mac or a PC via a card reader and verify it still contains your data. If it doesn't, you might have lost the data during the process.

Yep, this is one of the reasons the update was halted.

Man, well Im fortunate to have read some of everyones posts before updating, Looking forward to the "stable" update release.

LOL.. Samsung's OTA bricked Intercepts, now they're wiping/not seeing SD cards.
Odin FTW.

I lost 4 gigs of photos when I upgraded to dk28 in december.
A google search back then lead me to believe this was a somewhat common, but cause unknown, android problem.

It's not just the OTA, they pulled the links from Sammy's site also.

I went to the sprint store today... Turns out it was a pretty easy fix, but I have to reinstall launcherpro and everything. We'll see how I like it in a few. Importing my contacts now

EVO Deleting images off SD Card?

Ok, I know I heard / read some information regarding users having wallpapers dissapear after the OTA update, however I thought I wasn't a victim, perhaps I was.
However, I have lost 1,000+ images (mostly a large group of wallpapers I had downloaded and hardly looked through) off of my SD card. In addition to wallpapers random pictures are missing that I had taken with my phone.
Mostly curious if anyone had similar experiences? If so, did you deduce they were OTA related, or a specific app? I really don't want this to happen again, so I am looking for any information to help solve this
I am running stock EVO not rooted, for what that is worth.
Thanks in advance!

Woww, this just started happening to me. I have not updated my EVO yet.
Is there a way to trace down what the devices does, like a log where it shows activities between the device and the SD Card.
Just curious if you're using the micro SD card that came with the EVO or a newly purchased one, if so please mention card.

Mine is full rooted, not updated so far, with a A-DATA 16 GB Class 6 microSDHC Flash Memory Card and yesterday i lost the whole 100MEDIA directory so.....it seems to be a Evo issue
Could it be an internal issue in the Device? I dont think this has to do with the ROM/Update the device is running.
We need to escalate this as a crucial issue.
I am running [ROM]EVO-NonSense(AOSP Elements), rooted using Toast Method 2, Amon RA, with Calkulin Radio+WiMAX updates.
We should stay on top of this, I'd rather not have WTF moments or develop compulsions to constantly back up all files in some paranoid fashion..
I am using the stock SD card that came with my EVO, thankfully I was able to user some forensic programs and recover most of my images. I did narrow down the time frame of the deletions, however I was unable to determine If I had added any new apps to cause this issue.

What appl did you use?
I used Access Data FTK Imager and made an image of my SD card then from the image recovered what I could of deleted files, and pushed them back onto the SD card when finished.

SD card support hinges on Google. Honeycomb doesn't support external storage yet. This is a Google issue, not a Motorola issue.
That is what I have heard...
And you don't think Google and Motorola have discussed this? Come on now, someone knows the answer. My concern is Honeycomb starts to support SD, then the Xoom does not (I do not care why), we are left with a lame duck holding our junk and crying about an 800$ loss.
I'm sure that Toshiba would also be pretty upset if Google decides not to support external storage. They're including an SD card slot in their tablet as well. I'm not sure about all of the others, but there are two manufacturers counting on SD card support.

Well, then don't be concerned: there's absolutely no reason why Honeycomb would support SD and the Xoom wouldn't. Zero. Zilch. Nada.
The Xoom is being treated as a google expeirance device which puts in the same league of updates as the G1, the Nexus 1, the OG Droid, and the Nexus S. It will get it so stop worrying. This is also the reason for the unlocked boot loader. Now as for when thats a whole other story but the more devices that ship with Honeycomb the better because that will put pressure on google to get the update out.
this might be odd, but what the heck makes it so hard to have SD support in the first place, you would think that this would be one the main functions of the software. I mean, its not like SD cards are new, and not like a million other devices that are running android (not 3.0 but older versions) have SD support. i mean, this confuses me in the first place.

I think the problem isn't that honeycomb doesn't support sdcards so much a it doesn't support two. The internal memory is being seen as an sdcard.

I'm not sure about the Captivate, but on the Xoom the /data and /sdcard mount points both point to the same logical partition on the internal storage. In most phones, /data has its own partition on the internal storage, and /sdcard is mounted from your sd card slot.
well.. not to argue the point, witch is completely valid, I still do not understand why that was not something that could have been added at the get go.
it just seems simple, as it would require a driver, an just a point in the script to mount it.
Flash, I can see why the issue, new hardware and stuff.
anyways, cant wait to get some SD action, would love to toss some movies on this thing!. (err.. more movies)

Yeah, I'm almost 100% sure they pulled that out of their ass, and was confusing the LTE SIM card slot (which is usuaily ultimately attached to a serial port, no special hardware required) with the SD Card slot.
They were probably just hoping it would all get worked out around the same time as the 4G updates.
This is on the Wifi Model listing:
Memory expansion via microSD card slot with support for optional cards up to 32 GB (functionality requires future software upgrade)

Do you really think Google created a brand new Android OS that should be around for years to come that will not support SD cards? And on top of that, do you think Motorola working with Google would put an SD slot in the xoom and never activate it?
Really, come on...
Source is available, if for some dumb reason Google doesn't want to support an SD card, motorola can do it themselves.
Is source available?

LTE NOT Landing Before July

The Verizon XOOM LTE upgrade will not be hitting before July, when it is currently scheduled. This date, as loose as it is, had the specific caveat that it is very possibly subject to further delay.
For obvious reasons, I won't name the source, but I will state that they are within Verizon, and are in a position to have accurate information.

I believe it is coming my friend.... when? Prolly not soon but if never I believe VZW and Moto will be slammed with lawsuits from us sue happy Americans.
The SD card issue is joke already. There is NO REASON as to why they cany have it working for us.
Sadly, those of us who gave Motorola one last try (on the Xoom, after we were all burned with locked boot loaders on the Droid X and subsequent phones) have been shown, once again, to not trust Motorola.
Yeah, some of the things that come with the Galaxy Tab 10.1 are limited/annoying, but Samsung is proving to be a monster of a manufacturer/designer. Thinner than iPad2? Yes please. OPTIONAL Tablet Touch Wiz UI? Doesn't bother me, it's OPTIONAL. Sure, it was probably Google's call on that one, but that's actually a good thing. Sounds like Google is headed in the right direction regarding Android skins.
Anyway, my Xoom is fine for me for now - and it was great as a first-adopter product. But NEVER again will I buy Motorola. EVER. This was the nail in the coffin. But I got my Honeycomb first, which was worth one last chance on Motorola.

I can understand from a developer perspective but the damage is already done with all these other tablets releasing with working SD cards. It is too late now. Google/Motorola should have had this working before any other tablet released with a working SD card and they failed. I am also in the group where I will never buy a Motorola device again. Thing is, you'd be the first person screaming if a majority of your apps started force closing due to the sdcard hack that'd have to be used until Google finalizes the new API.
Also, I wish people would stop making absolute statements they lack the qualifications to make.
Just saw over at Droid world that 4g and SD card slot will be done in mid July but get this you will have to box up your Xoom and send it off.I'm happy to see the updates coming but jeez sending off my xoom and waiting for god knows how long is absurd
Hey just hack ur xoom! No but seriously, not one honeycomb tablet has a functioning sd card slot. Google did not have support for it in honeycomb. I would settle for powering down and being able to just load my files the old fashion way, if it would just read the sd card! And 4G ain't really tha important to me. Not like i'm gonna be streaming a moving dtiving down the road any way. It will get fixed, just give it some time. The xoom rocks no matter how you look at it. And just be happy not buying one those crapple knockoffs from samsung! That thing looks like a kids toy.

When Android first came out internal storage was meant for apps and data only. Things like music and movies were stored on external storage (i.e. sdcard). When an application requests access to external storage it is in reality given access to /sdcard.
Now devices, like the xoom, have much larger internal storage and so can store what historically been kept on an sdcard internally. The problem is that applications are still (correctly) requesting external storage for the storage and manipulation of large files. This access points to /sdcard still. If you look on your xoom you will see all your music, movies, dropbox, etc... are stored in the /sdcard folder.
One problem. The xoom does not have an sdcard in it.
So now, with more modern devices Android needs a way to be able to intelligently allocate access to both the internal storage as well as a sdcard. This can not be done well if both point to /sdcard and thus a solution must be made.
Does that help to explain why this was not a problem in the past but now is?
this is without a doubt, the most well written easy to understand post i have seen on this forum in regards to why the SD card feature has been delayed. This explains it well for the laymen. thank you for the thought out post.

EC09 Fried SD Cards thread

So I am wanting those who have used EC09 and either have had their SD card fried or not fried, and give the steps on what they did to get the ROM installed and any post install steps they used.
As of right now I have done EC09 twice.
The first time was with the stock 16 GB SD card installed, flashed the ROM/Radio via odin, installed and rooted with Gingerbreak. And about a day or so after setting up the ROM my SD card became damaged, tried formatting with the phone and windows, and OS X, no success. Eventually had to take it to Verizon to get replaced. Flashed to DI01 when I brought it in.
The second time I am using a 4 GB SD card, erased it with the phone. I flashed the ROM with Odin, then once it loaded, I flashed CWM, booted to CWM, and wiped Data, cache and Dalvik booted into the rom, Gingerbreak'ed it. So far no SD card issues.
So I am wanting everyone to report all they have done, I know there are lots of you who are no issues with the SD card, and if we can atleast make it possible to narrow it down to anything common, we can atleast narrow it down to something to save some peoples SD cards.
My thoughts if it fries the one that came in the phone, flash to DI01, go into verizon and just say it stopped working, and they should replace it.
Just a update for those who care, so far the SD card is still working, havn't gotten a Damaged SD card error yet, installed about 20 apps, and downloaded about 100+ files to my SD card for my Scripture app from my church. So far so good.
just a thought: I'm from the mesmerize forums, but this is my hazard at a guess: It looks like the build is treating the internal sd card as a normal usb composite device, thus using usb data buffers when data r/w occurs. Those buffers are most likely larger than normal sdcards are meant to handle. Large volume data transactions, like watching movies, may damage you card. Just a guess though, from what I'm seeing in the ui.

It's TW-based.
Well, for me, every time I had an SD error it was when I was accessing large amounts of data from the card. I was accessing the gallery, but no pictures were there to show up (it couldn't load them). I tried a Batch Backup with Titanium so that I could save the MMS settings and all of my data for a backup after the first glitch when I lost all of my data completely.
It popped up a window saying the SD was blank and that I needed to format. I formatted and made sure to turn on debugging/development and had no further problems.
One time was enough for me. I'm sticking with CM7, doubly so since the sensors are now all working and all we need is MMS.
EC09 = TouchWiz
CM7 = AOSP

Please atleast answer some of the questions, when you flashed the rom, did you wipe any data, cache or dalvik?
Are you using the stock 16 GB card? Or a different one?
i was lucky, i had no issues with my SD card, but my friend did, as soon as he told me, and said others were having the same issue, i ran on here to read up....i immediately odin'd dl01 modem, then flashed dl01 to ed04...and have been fine. i back my sd card up frequently, but you never know....
now I was running Nameless 4, then went back to stock Gingerbread and rooted/debinged/debloated...and now i'm back on Nameless 4.1...but hearing CM7 is ready minus MMS which I don't use (i use Voice for my texting so i don't have to pay for it) i can finally go back to CM (ran it on both my OG Droid and DInc, so i have been missing it since I got the Fassy....
My sd card is borked too after flashing the full ec09 package. Worked for a little and then started getting errors. Could someone link me the full dl01 odin package that will get me to stock so I can take it in to Verizon and play dumb. Thanks!

Wrong. EC09 is also a modem number. If he was talking about CM7 or MIUI then they are not TW.
I wonder if all the fried SD cards are Samsung that came with the phones? I other non-16GB SD cards work fine with EC09 roms.
Mine got fired as well or something. I could not format the card. Seems like EC09 is the cause for it.
My phone just turn off on it's on, I could not turn the phone back on with the power switch and had to pull the battery out and put back in to turn the phone back on.
I've been using CM7 since test4 and I'm not experiencing this so far. Fingers crossed*

My 2 Cents... I used Nameless 4.1 for days no prob then read it didn't play videos. I of course had to confirm this and sure enough they didn't play. Instantly after this my card went tits up. Mbr was destroyed so had to fix that first before I could reformat card. The card is fine, now on cm7.

Are you really that stupid? It has nothing to do with it being a scripture app, it has everything to do with the fact that it is a app that writes 100+ files to the SD card, meaning the SD card is being used, and not sitting idle, I mean anyone could flash this ROM and have no SD card issues until they do some heavy writing to it.
The Scripture app has nothing to with trying to get it replaced, I was just using it as an example of a App that was writing to the card, and was having issues with my old card when it died.

So I'm going to install this update tomorrow hopefully. Can anyone let me know if they have encountered any issues with YouTube app, I'm positive some people had issies when they installed kitkat not sure what region it was tbh.
Also have yous encountered any other issues at all yet, big or small?
I'm ever so cautious since I got stung pretty badly with the S3 update many months ago which they had to stop thanks to it being a disgrace of an update.
Thanks in advance.

No problems yet, go for it. Utube is fine.
Still problems with sd card access on some apps.
BS player doesn't work, crashes on start.
ES explorer not writing to sd card either.

Yeah restricted SD card access - We're just going to have to get used to it a guess.
I don't have much apps on my Tablet and I have about 9GB still free on my internal memory so I reckon I'll manage hopefully.

Yeah thats what I'm going to do if it affects me, I think al be alright with space and what not as I dont really have much apps tbh. And any videos and MP3 I want on my tablet can still be transferred onto SD card.

I just save things to phone mem use the built in file manager if I need to move anything onto card. My s5 is kitkat and it's the same deal.
3rd party apps have had their sd card permissions removed, stops apps littering the card with rubbish.

It depends on the user as well. You and a few others might not need SD card permissions but for someone like me with a lot of heavy games, emulator games like ps1, movies/videos and other large apps, a 32GB micro SD is a blessing

Yeah I have a 64GB SD Card and tbh I only have like 10GB worth of stuff on it at the minute. I don't use my tablet to the level I used to, I still use it a LOT but my main uses are surfing the net and LOADS of YouTube.
Although I'm going on Holiday next month so I'm going to tranfer about 50GB worth of HD documentaries and all sorts ... Love the ability to do that.

Some developers have written their apps now with SD card access. It is laziness by some that they have not yet.
See Maps Me for an example of how to do it. They were very quick, a great app.
What on earth!! Just finished work so thought I'd download the update and then install ... says its ganna take an 1hr09 to download just 600MB!! Talk about slow.

It will be, there's thousands of users been waiting forever for it to be released !
In fact, they may well have capped the speed to distribute it fairly. Mine took about an hour.
