Fully charged my phone night before last and went to work in the morning (9am). I didn't touch it all day, didn't even turn it on. On my drive home at 5pm it was dead, off.
I plugged it in with the phone off when I got home and saw that it was fully charged a few hours later around 10pm and I booted it up and left it alone. This morning it was dead, off.
Looking at the apps that take up my battery doesn't work because it doesn't retain information what happened to the phone prior to the last reboot. Not sure what to do. My awake time matches my standby time exactly. It's obviously a 100% awake time problem but what's triggering this?
I'm on Fresh .3 with absolutely no other mods. I don't think I have any apps that ping outside servers. So what the ****!?
EDIT:
lulz, I just realized I haven't been even able to use the phone in 3 days due to this issue
Something is eating your battery obviously.

That's a PITA. This is a clean fresh .3 rom install with only logmein, dropbox and couple non-online games installed. Why is this phone such ****ing fail right now.
Have you removed the Favorites widget? Doing that stopped all battery drain problems for me. Just delete the widget.
First thing to check is if you have a sufficient cellular signal. If you are getting a weak signal it will cause poor battery life. If cell signal strength is not your problem then it is definitely something you have installed on it eating away at your battery. That said check/do the following:
1) Check how frequently you have your accounts syncing
2) Before the phone dies look in your battery use to see what's eating your battery
3) Install a task manager/killer (I use Advanced Task Killer)
4) You don't have to do this one but it does help. I use a program called Startup Auditor to disable startup on apps I don't need to run when the phone first boots (you'd be surprised how many are in there).

delete it completely or remove it from one of the home panels?
the "time without signal" workarounds seem to prove the most effective for me. in addition, reduce background usage and automatic update frequencies as best as you can.
according to this thread [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=709768] (and link within), HTC has acknowledged some issues and is preparing to deploy a few fixes.
You are running someone else's ROM, there could be a problem with the radio, or a problem with the way it was loaded.
If you are in an area where you don't get signal, you are going to drain the battery, and FAST.
Do you have 4g on but not in a 4g area?
I am...
fully rooted and have fresh .3 as well. I am getting over 30hrs with moderate use and the last hour of that I had everything on to purposely run it down to dead. (was doing a toastch recommeded battery meter calibration).
Took my phone off the charger last night at 7:30 pm. It's 2:23pm and I have 31% left. I have Wifi, BT, and Background apps with auto sync turned on.
I would say you might be experiencing the Motorola cell tower problem. HTC has confirmed that the EVO is not playing well with cell towers that have motorola transmitters. It is causing the phone to use more energy to dial in the tower.
To be sure...
1. Set all apps and widgets to manual update or update once a day.
2. Get rid of the people app or widget from any home screen.
3. Go into Gtalk and uncheck auto sign in. Then sign out when you exit the program.
4. charge the phone until the green light comes on. Don't use a battery meter. The second the green light comes on, go into recovery and wipe the battery stats. Reboot the phone and run it until the battery dies and will not longer power the phone. This does nothing for the battery but does recalibrate the internal battery meter.
5. For maximum life...turn off: background data, WiFi, BT, and Mobile networks when not using. keep screen at 1/2 brightness.
If I do the above and manually update mail, weather, social apps, etc... and only turn radios on when I need them, I can get 40 hrs. out of my EVO and this is under moderate to high moderate use.
One other thing....plug your phone in for 10 minutes. Then unplug it and go into immediate stand by for like 30 minutes. Go to settings>about phone>battery>battery use>cell standby. Time without signal should be very low....anything over 10-15% and I'd suspect that if you did everything in 1-5, you have a towers issue robbing your battery.
I was having awake time issues with Fresh .3, so I switched to DamageControl, and everything has been great. Unplugged this morning at 7, and I still have 75% battery remaining. Better battery life than the Hero or BlackBerry Tour!

I seem to be having the same problem as you and it is quite frustrating. I get a steady 10% battery drain every hour even when its idle. I tried juice defender and setcpu and it is still the same. I turned off all my sync accounts and nothing. I also have systempanel and it doesn't seem like theres a rogue app eating my batteries.I'm going to truth to stock tonight to see if something is wrong with my phone. Did you ever figure out what was wrong with your phone?
AVA9 i get 20 hours a charge
but YES something is eating your battery install system pan have and let it run a bit and check the info id bet its
1 your evo spend a lot of tWOS
2 you have a rogue app eating your battery

I do apologize for bumping such an old thread, but I feel like this thread has already asked much of what I also wanted to ask but have not reached a conclusion. Therefore I would like to try and solve the problem or provide as much info as I can to solve the problem.
I indeed have installed systempanel and here are the screenshots for the day.

As you can see besides the internet, there is nothing else thats taking up the battery. Also I took this pic after I put the phone on the charger for a bit, it was at ~ 13% before. The battery usage information says a majority of the battery was used by #1 android system and #2 cell standby, it was neck and neck almost, with #3 being phone idle. My weather app polls every 3 hours, my facebook syncs every 30 mins, my htc sense facebook syncs once a day, and I have not configured any other emails except for two gmail acconts, which received probably 3 emails throughout the whole day.
I just used setcpu today, it made absolutely no difference. Same results as yesterday when I did not have setcpu. Thanks in advance for the help!
dude you need to try my setup: superevo and setcpu
i got 7 days of battery using the evo as a simple phone.

Why would anyone use an EVO as a simple phone.
I am beginning to think peoples opinions on moderate use vary tooooo much. The EVO is similar to an unplugged laptop. The more you make the cpu work the faster your battery is going to drain.
It seems some people just dont get that.

Sounds like Operator error.
thiis thing dies on me really quick, at home not as bad when I'm on wifi, but i left this morning from my house, and by the time I got to work 45 minutes later i'm at like 90% and i've done nothing on the phone, not a thing, no text, no voice calls. time without signal is 0.
then of course I get to work and time without signal jumps to like 22%, but still, my blackberry didn't go dead in half a day. i'm running the mixup undervolted kernal and the epic experience rom.
I do run gps and normal phone settings but turning them off is really not an option, especially for my wife that just needs a phone that works and isn't dead before she is out of work, and she doesn't even use the phone.
am I doing something wrong or is the battery life really this crappy?
and it was worse before the new kernal on DI18, and way worse before that.
i use the same set up i got 10 hours under pretty use
try turning gps off at work
So what are you leaving on? 4g? Gps? WiFi? I found that using black wallpaper helps.
wifi and gps are always on, it seems its TWS that is killing it. at like 22% right now. battery is down to 83% right now 2 hours off charger. no voice calls or text calls.
If you are getting a tws of 50% then put your phone into airplane mode for about 10 seconds and then switch it back, you will see a dramatic decease in tws

Here's a few things you can do ...
1) If you have Sprint service in most places, turn off roaming (Settings, Call settings, System select, Sprint). This will disable roaming period so that all roaming services are disabled (i.e. you won't ever see the data roaming guard).
2) Download JuiceDefender beta (this turns off all data, i.e. Wifi / 3G, whenever your phone's screen is off, if you purchase UltimateJuice with it, you can schedule it however you want, and you can choose to allow some apps to always allow data to go through). This saves me a LOT of battery since my screen is usually off.
3) Try the TWS hack mentioned in the earlier post, it should be fixed in DI18, but some people are still seeing high numbers there.
4) If you're rooted, get an app like Autostarts and disable the DRM service from ever running. This was found to be a battery killer.
The biggest battery drainer of them all is the GPS, and then 3G. If you can minimize your uses with those, you will maximize battery life. Also, use Wifi in areas that have it because Wifi hardly drains battery at all compared to 3G. I haven't seen any kernel really that gets much more battery life than stock, so doing these things will help. I love the Epic, but the battery life is a real downer for me too. I've gotten a full day's use (medium use) at times, while some days it hardly lasts at all.
Yes do the airplane mode trick and turn off gps if you are not using it and DO NOT USE JUICE DEFENDER i get 45 hours battery life without it. that app runs constantly in the background and uses more battery. Juice defender is for lazy people that dont know how to find these data and sync settings that are already on the phone or you can download an app that will let you toggle whatever setting you need. Set emails to sync once an hour and if it is really a priority then go into the email account and push refresh.
If you are really getting 45 hours of battery while actually using your phone then will you please share all of the settings that you have that give you this kind of battery life

I wondered if that would do anything. Considering how AMOLED works, dark themes and wallpapers *should* help battery life similar to reducing brightness.
Auto-Sync does some mean damage if your settings are too frequent, too. Try not to use Facebook/Twitter/Myspace integration, if possible, or disable them from syncing automatically, and sync them yourself when you feel the need.
Okay I don't know exactly what I did/didn't do but my battery problem seems to be greatly improved. Lets start with my details. Before 2 days ago. No matter what my use my battery drain would be approx 6-8% an hour. If I took my phone off the charger at 11am by 4pm I would be around 60%. GPS/4g/wifi off. Screen brightness set to lowest. tws not too bad. Using both the tws trick and drm stopped. Usually 2 or 3 phone calls 5-10 texts 5-10 minutes of browsing. I had a task killer installed but never used it to kill tasks just as an app switcher. Even after the di18 update no major difference. So the other day I downloaded an app called system panel. Another task manager. I deleted the task killer widget on my home page but no the app. The first day I took my phone off the charger used it for about an hour then put it back on the charger for about 15 minutes. When I took it off the charger it was at 96%. I opened system panel and killed all apps (necessary services/apps restarted immediately) did tws trick and drm kill. Same use as always after 8 hours my battery was at 80% a 16% drop. That's 2% an hour. The next day I deleted my task killer and over the same period of time I went from 96% to 83% (13% lose over 8 hrs) Only a little over 1% lose an hour. The only difference that I am aware of was the deletion of the task killer widget and then the app completely.

Ditto, I'd like to hear what you're doing too ... even when I do not TOUCH the phone, I cannot get 45 hours. I think you're being a bit optimistic here.
Lmao No. Since di18 it has been great. I use my phone for a lot of stuff too. I have a live wall paper and rss feeds that update. email is set to once an hour. Now dont get me wrong if i play a game then it will suck my battery pretty good like 5% for ten minutes. i have a widget for sync settings. im rooted with ALL SPRINT apps removed i think thats the biggest thing. dont leave gps or other on if you are not using it. i do not have drm removed. i use full brightness. i talk a few times a day and dozens of text and web surfing. no juice defender or task killers. The object for me was to not have any unneccessary stuff run when it doesnt need to. so the phone is set to come alive when the screen is on not off. Check ALL APP and WIDGET SETTINGS FOR HOW OFTEN THEY UPDATE. I DO MEAN ALL. GO THROUGH EVERY APP AND CHECK THEIR SETTINGS ALSO the biggest drain is make sure you sign out gtalk or it will just constantly run. I shoulda posted my screen shot of battery life earlier sorry i will as soon as it reads 1d21h again. prolly tomorrow afternoon.... Rooted, cwm, galaxy rom and kernel, blue minimalism theme

i do the airplane trick, problem is it seems, when im on wifi, the life is great, battery is perfect, as soon as you go to 3g, it goes to crap, plus the service where I work is spotty as well. I don't know what to do, seriously I can't go through 2 years of great cell service that I can't use because the battery is dead. I mean if I could get through 10 hours it wouldn't be bad, but as it is now, i'm lucky to squeak through about 8 hours. and I have the mixup kernal that is undervolted and supposedly already messing around with the cpu. usually on 3g, no matter where I am pretty much I"m at like 10-20% TWS.
tws is 50% for me. just stop the data with sync settings then it has no reason to draw more. my house and school have terrible service. you are only losing battery life due to data that is going really slow and it takes way more battery to accomplish. i keep wifi on all nite at my house but my sync settings are off. i do this so its not searching for 3g because i have an airrave and wifi. i used the di07 mixup and was not happy with it. galaxy roms have been the least buggy and very stable with the best battery life. That might be my opinion but also genius dog doesnt have an epic yet so i cant trust his stuff when he cant see the impacts with the kernels he is making. but he does know code i will tell you that.

Holy crap 8 hour battery life is really bad.
Do you have any apps syncing? A weak signal with an app syncing can have a devastating effect on the battery life.
In my school building I get 0-1 signal bars and once I use the stock email app to sync my email every hour with 3G on my battery life is probably a third as good.
How?

Inside my building where I get a weak signal I turn off 3G and use the wifi to sync my apps regularly. I get a good wifi signal there.
If I can't get a good 3G signal in the building than there's not much I can do to my phone to make the 3G signal better (I think that's the cause for the battery drain).
This has been plaguing my phone for a few months i can't even get 24 hours without it dieing. I can't figure out what the problem is and i have tried everything except a full wipe which i want to avoid.
Before i would get about 2 days with normal usage (few calls, browsing the net, msn, music and little bit of gaming)
Now when i unplug it at 7AM it is almost dead by 3PM (15%) but nothing has changed so i can figure out where the drain is coming from. I'm using Doc 9.6.6 (was on 9.1.4 and did a NO WIPE of 9.6.6 yesterday to see if i could get better battery) and SpeedMod K13C 500.
Everything that uses data is disabled or set to manual. Wifi is disabled, GPS is disabled, Bluetooth disabled. Google/Facebook sync is disabled. No Live Wallpaper, Email is set to NEVER, Fancy Widgets is set to NEVER. Reset the battery state in recovery numerous times, wiped cache etc.
Last night phone was at 60% when i woke up the phone was at 35% and that's only about 10 hours and after a FRESH shutdown and reboot. So nothing out of the ordinary like a game was running.
Whats Running after a fresh boot is in the pictures below, ending things like Tango and Galley, Facebook make no difference.
What is causing this massive idle drain?
If i need to do a full wipe is there a way to save my games saves? don't care for anything else just dont wanna start angry birds over again for a 3rd time.
You got 2 days before??
I've always only ever gotten max 12-14 hours out of my battery. Wifi off, bluetooth off, gps off, 3g on, background data & auto-sync on for: 2 gmail accounts + facebook (no auto refresh) + twitter (updates ever 30 mins) + whatsapp. BeejiveIM, GoSMS, Lookout, weatherbug elite widget (updates every 12 hours), agenda widget, NoLED on, and go launcher ex. Running stock rom JL2. Drains about 15% overnight (7 hours).
Not sure how you got 2 days before, but sounds about right to me that you get less than 24 hours from your battery.
Myself and many others get 2 days with light-moderate usage. I'm on 2 days 9 hrs and 10% left right now with 2 hrs 15 min screen time.
If you can't figure it out you might just have to bite the bullet and wipe it to see if that works.

yes i did try that, its annoying the hell outta me that it used to last 2 days but now its like this and thats with everything off.
I used to have a live wallpaper on all the time and yes that did drain the battery allot but i would still have about 30% after a full day of usage from a full change.
Now it dose not matter what i change if i live wallpaper or not its still dies about 3PM
any way to save my games says if i have to do a wipe?
That's awesome! I get 8% an hour drain on idle with 2 gmail accounts, and a few apps synching... with usage (bluetooth music, browsing, texting...) I have about 15% an hour drain.
Wiping, battery stats wipe, new roms, kernels, and modems don't fix anything... I guess we just have to accept that some units go through more battery than others!
If you're using Google Latitude service (configured via Maps), try signing out of it and see what it does for you. I've been suffering from excessive battery drain as well and after a lot of experimenting I've found out that using Latitude on Froyo ROMs (any Froyo) leads to phone not entering sleep mode properly for some reason and therefore draining battery a lot.
Nexus S users are experiencing this as well and I've even had confirmations from Desire users experiencing this, so this might be some bigger issue not related to SGS.

Interesting, I'm going to give it a go without Latitude on after I reflash stock JL2. My "Time on" for Display is usually something like 40mins or so when I check it at 98%
Idle drain seems to be what are most worried about.
Ok first fix permissions from cwmedia recovery in speedmod.
Then wipe cache and dalvik partitions, don't worry your phone will rebuild them.
Next I would try something if you want avoid a factory wipe.
Disable swype and clear app data then re-enable. Swype seems to have non wipe issues thru kies.
Now use OS monitor app to find apps which lurk in the background and then check their permissions, ones that can keep the phone awake are the culprits. Wipe their data or uninstall.
Facebook app sometimes doesn't shut down properly so watch that.
Also after a session I like to use clear mem level2 to stop Facebook or another app eating battery.
Finally what modem are you using? Jpy modem sucks for me at least. The latest jve from the gingerbread leaked rom is superb!
Hope this helps and good luck!
Stock JPY, Insanity SpeedMod OC-1200Mhz/UV, ext4, JVE gingerbread Modem,
Something I did a while ago seemed to help.
I ran down the battery till it switched off. Phone wouldn't power on. I plugged in the charger and powered on again. To my surprise the battery showed about 25%. Unplugged the charger then used it again till shutdown. Took about half an hour to do so, even though it was only connected to charger for a minute or so. Did that about 5 or more times till finally booting up with charger connected showed 0%.
Generally it not a good idea to boot with the charger connected as it stuffs up the battery stats or something, but I think in some cases it can help. Charged it to full and had no problems since.
Obviously this wont help if something in the background is killing the battery.

May be you have a task killer running in background and killing tasks that you shouldnt kill, by example any widget you have in your screen, it will cause that it will be reestarting and consuming CPU each certain time.

Remove TANGO !!! This soft was draining more than 25% overnight on my SGS (even if there's no service running and if it's not in task manager), After removing it, now my battery decreases 3-4% in 8h !
Funny Tango was the one thing that jumped out to me from the process list, but I don't have any experience with it myself. Shutting that off for a while is probably worth a shot.
This is my batterystats. "Taleanrop" is phonecalls or whatever the english term is.
Hello peeps,
During the last couple of days I've read up a lot on the topic of battery drain. The reason is that a few weeks ago I could go for days without charging my phone with minimum usage with data traffic and gps turned on, display set to auto adjust the brightness etc. I basically didn't take any extreme ways to save my battery, as I simply didn't need to. But then I flashed Doc's and Stefunel's latest rom, with hardcore's kernel and all that. You know, pretty standard, nothing special. DTJP3 modem, the standard one for Australia. Was great for a start.
But then the horror began, after about a week. I've noticed that the up/download arrows are pretty much constantly glowing up there, and the battery drains in hours! I can't notice that my data usage have gone up a lot though. So I've tried that battery settings wipe thingy and some other stuff. Changed modem to JPY, which is also supposed to work in Australia (Even better from what I've heard). And sure, feels like I might have a bar or two better in reception. But the upload/download is still constantly on.
This is when I tried turning that of. I turned of data usage, gps, bluetooth, wifi, set brightness to lowest and downloaded Battery Snap. So with everything turned off, my battery dropped an average of ~0.5%/hour without usage. SWEET! Then I turned on data usage, and nothing more. It dropped 23% for the first hour, and 13 for the next half hour. Didn't think about actually checking the temp, but it was warm. Like when you use it.
This turned out to be an awful lot of text for just this question, but what could be the problem? Is there any way to check what's leaking? I've got SGS email on push only, no task killer, WiFi turned of, so those can't possibly be leaking, could it?
about 5% per hr here with data on, may be you got something in behind hog the cpu an keep sendibg data

Sounds like an app keeping data connection on. Try kill all apps, look on the services and kill the ones which are not nessesary.
I get ~ 1.5% per hour drain with mail sync every 30min with 3g on ...

Yes, 1-5% per hr is pretty much what I'm looking for, and had before. It's definitely not CPU, as I've got OSmonitor, and nothing shows up there as hogging it.
I'll try killing app after app through OSmonitor, thanks for that tip.
Oh, and btw, I turned data usage off during night. It has dropped 1% in 9 hours now
That was easy
com.seven.Z7.service is the villain here. Isn't that the SGS email client? Even though I have push? Thought that wouldn't be a problem then...
com.seven.Z7.service kept starting again, but the I went into "Settings -> Apps -> Manage Apps" and killed Social Hub. Voila! It worked. Even though I started Social Hub up again after, it worked. Weird... Or, not 100% sure yet, but so far it works. will check the battery drainage first in a few hours
Good have you have probably found it! One sidenote i have stopped using the sgs email client since i had the problem that new emails werent showing up ... i switched to k9 - you can try this if the problem stays ...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Oh, that might be an option. But, ye, we'll see if it works. If not, I'll consider K9
Thanks for helping me find the problem.

Had the same problem with my SGH-959d (Telus Fascinate). Tracked down the culprit with Droidwall and then found your post. Killed the process through manage apps like you did and same results. Pulling battery didn't work, changing sync settings either so thanks a million for this!
I had a similar problem with my battery graph nose diving. I only realised my data was going through the roof when I started getting 'your are using to much data' text from my operator.
What I found helped was going into Settings->Privacy and turn off 'Back up my data'
Now I get I can go a day without charge. Instead of and hour and a bit... would be interesting to know if it helps you?
(On XXJVO no mods)
good tip about back up... but what do we loose?
A nice tip could be turn 2g/3g on/off when need it. Its a good way of saving battery.
I too am curious as to what id lost if we turn off back up data

actually, i still dont understand how it works. days before, i keep.complaining the bad battery, it drops 15% after one night. i turned my wifi and 3g off, it didnt work. i opened a thread to complain about this, some friend advise me to use the juice defender which really help a lot. now it use only 3 to 4% for 8 hours standby, which is much much better than before. if u are also troubled by ur battery, give it a shot. it's free from the market.
my set: all enable except for the location.

What does it shut off? Seems like it has to be something important to work. I want my email in real-time; does it mess with that?
I installed this only a few hours ago. yet to see any significant change. By the looks of it, having it on the default setting will turn data off when your screen is off, but I still get e-mail notifications in my 1hr check intervals even when my phone is sleeping.

The main feature is that it disables data most of the time (2g, 3G or wifi) and only enables it at preset intervals, like 2 minutes every 30 minutes to get your e-mails and stuff.
So basically what you lose is push / real time notifications.
It can also manage the screen brightness and CPU clock more precisely, put the phone in plane mode while you're sleeping (for example you can tell Juice defender to go in plane mode from 23:30 to 6:30 every day, except if you're still using your phone after 23:30 or start using it before 6:30), or activate wifi only when you're in a specific location.
Does anybody have issues receiving MMS picture messages with JD or any other power saving app running?
I had 'Green Power' running yesterday. A few people sent me pics which came through as blank. Stopped the app and asked them to resend and it worked.
Thanks
NC
I tried this app too, but the battery draining when WiFi was enabled was higher than without JuiceDefender. Still trying to get through all the JD settings...
I dont think Juice Defender would work well for me as I use Whats App a lot...
I use it on my ego. One of the best apps i bought
from my phone duh
Is anyone else able to toggle the 2G/3G setting? I've paid for the Ultimate Pack (wish i hadn't now as the Plus pack is supposed to do this) but apparently JD doesn't like my ROM, the Log says: 'ROM is not compatible with AOSP helper (3G control is unavailable) - get CyanogenMod
Out of interest i was on a UK O2 branded phone so i flashed XEU KW7, then rooted, then put back the original KE7 kernel. I wonder if that's the problem?
I was messing with Juice defender, but I found the app called Battery Booster to be much, much more effective. I went from a 12 hour battery, to having between 24 and 28 hours the last 3 charges. Simply amazing, more than doubled my battery life. Using perhaps 1-2% per hour when sleeping.
1-2% per hour when sleeping is not that good, i get 3% in 8 hours when sleeping.
But juice defender does what should be built into the gingerbread and that is, it puts your wifi and 3g to sleep when your screen is off or when you are not using it.
I personaly dont use push notifications so loosing that doesnt bother me, what bothers me is when the phone is in sleep it drains because i have wifi on.
I dont want to be turning wifi on and off all the time, i want it to be automatic, when i go on the web or open an app that uses data it should turn on my wifi.
SO YES JUICE DEFENDER DOES ROCK.
Well, before battery booster it used 5 - 8% per hour sleeping, so I'm pretty darn happy with the results I'm getting now. It used to last me about 12 hours. Now it lasts usually over 24 hours, which is great. That is included with 3-4 hours of screen-on time. Android OS also dropped by 20% after getting battery booster.

You do know there's a setting for turning of WiFi when screen is off, right?
Settings - WiFi - Advanced - Wifi Sleep Policy

Unlikely but a factory reset often cures a problem .

no problem at all with push services.
the way juice def works is simple: it geolocalizes ur wifi router, and moving out the area of wifi, jd switches off wifi hardware until u come back home\office. it does the same with other hardware modules not in use.
wot doesnt work: ebuddy or other istant massaging apps while screen is off (I think it's unuseful to use jd with IM-draining batt-apps)

Hmm, am I doing something wrong leaving my phone charging overnight? Will that kill my battery?
When do you guys charge the phone if not overnight?

I just installed Battery Booster. Juice Defender didn't do much for me but annoy me.
Now see how this app will hold itself.
Very similar to my finding with ATK (link below). Something happened in Gingerbread with how the OS handles cached apps... to the point where some cached apps stay active and keep your device awake!
