[Q] Possible to connect to Desire to control SMS? - Galaxy Tab General

I have a Tab (rooted) and a Desire (stock ROM but rooted)
I don't use a SIM in the Tab so it's WiFi only.
Is it possible to somehow control my Desire from my Tab or somehow see what SMS's have come in to (and reply?) while it is on charge in another room (on same WiFi network)?

Have a look at SMS Commander or Droid Commander. By the description, they might be what you're after. Notbsure about sending texts via the Tab though.

to me this is the only real functionality I am missing from the tab, I hate using 2 text numbers (and I dont like the GV text app to use just the one)...
i currently use SMS Backup+ to backup my missed calls and sms from my Hero to gmail, and then use GMAILNotifier to have notifications on my tab homescreen to show me when I need to dig my phone out of my pocket
This setup creates "labels" for SMS and missed calls that I can see from Gmail on any computer or from the app

cheers both of you. Ganjdroid, those don't do what I want, thanks though
X1088LoD, we don't have GV outside the US
I was wanting to be able to reply too, I was hoping someone may have adapted something like those apps where notifications go to gmail and you can reply as they only work on my PC, not on GTalk on my Tab

I don't think Whatsapp has been designed with Tablets in mind though I was hoping to use it when I get mine. Firstly are you sure you have got it set up correctly, I can't remember when I first set mine up on my phone but I think once I installed I had to put in the phone number I was using and then got a text message from Whatsapp on that number.
Again not sure on this next part but the Tab 10.1V doesn't have text message functionality does it? If not then I don't think it is set up correctly.
Anyway, lets assume that it is. The second issue is that Whatsapp syncs with your contacts from the phone book and the tablet doesn't have phone functionalities so won't have a phonebook.
I have a feeling that the phone version of Android 2.3 and below may store contact information in a different location to where Android 3.0 and above stores it so the app won't be able to find any of your contacts.
This is purely just guessing, you might want to shoot Whatsapp a quick message and see if that is the case or maybe do a Google search. They've had between 5-10million installs already so I'm sure there must be someone that has tried it on a Honeycomb Tab already
Thanks for your Help
I will look in to it and let you know something
Best regards

Look over at the whatsapp thread under the Xoom forum. I managed to get it working, but it won't run on the same account for 2 different devices at the same time (as Skype does), so I'm not using it.
How did you managed to do it?
I had no problems installing Whatsapp from official site, not the market, on my 10.1v after installing TB Galaxy 1.0.3 rom. I received sms validation, but never managed to add any contacts. Any hints?
Easy as a piece of cake!
Guys, actually it's very simple. I tried it myself and works.
Here's how:
Use the SIM card (mobile number) and insert into Tab 10.1 that you want your contact to see if you are online. This is also the number that you will be using to send/receive Whatsapp.
Download the latest Whatsapp here and install it on your Tab
Run Whatsapp and key in the SIM card mobile number and wait for it to verify
Wala... now you have a running Whatsapp!
Every mobile broadband card there is a number associated. If you do not know what is the number of the sim card, then take out the SIM card and plug it into a working phone, create a sms and send it to yourself and you will see a number popping up. That is the number you should key in Whatsapp.
NOTE: Because the number you are using in Whatsapp will determine who will see or will not see you online, therefore, I recommend either you inform your contacts that you have two Whatsapp running. One is on Tab while the other is on your phone. You cannot run both together using one number, but you can also circumvent if you intend to use it on your Tab rather than your phone, just use the SIM number that you are using for calls and insert into Tab to verify then take out the SIM and put back to your phone. It will still work.
It's easy and someone made it complicated. I thought so too initially!
PS: you won't be able to see your contact list as usual.
whatsapp is working correctly, BUT the contacts will only show up as numbers. and yes, im only running one instance of whatsapp.
as im reading this, do you mean that all your contacts needs to be on the SIM card and not using google contacts?
Whatsapp support mail
This is what official support answered me: "Sorry, tablets are not supported at this time and we have no plans to support them."

not working for me.
Try Viber, similar to whatsapp but can see all contacts. However, Viber can't seems to allow attachment of pic and clips. Anyone has ideas?
i found a way to use whatsapp with contacts, in a way.
Note my screen shot on the top half with names listed icons. (1st screenshot)
You can set whatsapp as default messaging and by pressing the friend icon, goes straight to a whatsapp conversation.
(2nd screenshot)
Note this.
You will need to keep all conversations and never delete them, otherwise you will need to get your friend to initiate a new conversation. But no big deal.
I tried everything else and this is the only way.
Hope that helped someone.
now the contacts accept whatsapp.
just set the default messaging service to what'sapp on the friend icon.
once your in contacts and press the contacts name, it shows the what's app icon as seen in the screenshot.
Works perfectly.
Update.
saving the contacts under device only makes what's app possible and only then will the icon appear under the contact.
Also. Now the contacts list can access whatsapp like it should.
Always get your friend to initiate the conversation and save it from there.
Transferring old account from the adroid phone trick does not work so this is the best way.
to bad this isent with wifi only ,
is there a way like imessage, or ping to use on tablets?

Canadians: Using Rogers One Number on the N1?

hey everyone
As Canadians may have heard, a carrier finally did something nice for us, Rogers released their One Number service, sort of a poor man's Google Voice, which is great for Canadians as we can't yet access Google Voice.
You get txting/calling from your browser, you can ring multiple phones, etc.
Any experiences of using it so far?
https://www.rogersonenumber.ca
So far it seems OK, however the equivalent Android app doesn't seem to work on the N1. Anybody have luck with this?
I'm running CM7, and when I open the site to get the Android app the Rogers site says
Your phone currently does not suppor tthe Rogers One Number mobile apps. You can continue to use the service from your computer at www.rogersonenumber.ca

Bump? Any Canadians Rogers customers out there?
have you tried changing your user agent?
i have been running this on my samsung captivate.
the app is annoying as it gives constant birthday notifications for all contacts from email, social networks and phone. even after clearing the notification it comes back. a bug im sure will be fixed someday.
the pc app is not bad.. allows you to send receive calls on pc, though it operates through a web portal using web browser. though not needing web page open to receive calls because of try app doenst make it horrible.
even though the app runs on my phone, i am unable to transfer calls from pc to phone as is supposed to do. but does ring my main phone number on both my phone #s (and pc) at same time! *as long as pc client is running, as it uses client to ring all other numbers.
this is super handy when i forget my phone at home but have my 3g enabled netbook in my truck. i am still able to get calls, texts, and contact info wirelessly!
DISCLAIMER!! - using rogers one number on a mobile PC/laptop will give INCORRECT 911 location info unless you are at home or the address you register for one number service!
APK files
Could someone please post the apk files? Thx
I get the same msg from Rogers, but I think it's wrong.
However, it won't let me access the files for it.
So plz post them...thank you
I run CM7 on my N1 and everything seemed to work fine for me. I installed the app so that I could sync my contacts, but then uninstalled it as I didn't see the point of having it on my phone.
I can now use a computer to text and call... but I never really do.

Similar here, uninstalled the onenumber app on phone after sync.
Only tried to transfer call from phone to PC and it works seamlessly (essentially PC client is taking over the call)
Never tried to send a call from PC to phone, or ring multiple numbers of sorts.
Free call from PC using my number is the best use for me (and I think the whole purpose of this service for Rogers is customer retention & offload traffic to the internet) but I am still exploring.
On the side note... I dream the day IP calling will become mainstream and appropriately priced, for better use of the spectrum, etc. (See the article on the Verge "Phoning it in: the dirty secret of IP calling, and how it will change the phone industry")
i was having the same error as op when the One number first came out
APK would be nice if someone has time to post it.
The OSX app is good, I use it to find out about incoming texts. However, if I send out a text via the Rogers One OSX app then my phone does not show it in the "Sent" area.
For those with the Android app running, does sending from your computer get synced up with your phone?
Nope, doesn't sync back to my phone for me.

[Q] sms but no calls sounds illogical?

how sms app uses sim to send
messages if it is data only in n7 3g and not make calls??
There are many apps that allow sms over wi-fi. I use Google Voice and my GV phone number to send and receive texts from my wi-fi only N7. Your question is confusing. If you are talking about a 3G N7, it still has wi-fi and you can text using wi-fi or data on 3G.
am telling u that the apps like go SMS pro make use of Sim card to send text msg (no internet required) then why not the phone calls

[Q] Auto Forward Text Messages 3G nexus 7

Hi,
I have recently been given a work phone and don't want to carry two phones.
I would like to keep my personal number so will continue that contract. I will set my carrier setting to auto forward calls to my work phone, but I would like a way to auto-forward SMS (text) messages to my work number, or email.
I have a nexus 7 3g and this seems like a good device to use as I can then still make use of my personal phone contract's internet access.
I installed the mms.apk app (thread found else where in this forum) and can now send and receive texts from my Nexus 7. But as it is not with me every day I want an automated way to get SMS messages to another number of email.
Does anyone know of an app which will let me auto forward SMS messages to a different number or to email? I'm happy to pay for the outbound message cost, but the only app I have found which *claims* compatibility is phoneleash and it does not forward anything.
Does anyone have a suggestion for how I can accomplish this?
Thanks
T.
You could just use an app that sends texts to the tablet like Cloud SMS. Then you could turn off the notifications on the phone.

Thanks for the reply, but I think I have not been clear with my request.
I have a personal contract which my friends know the number for.
I want to keep this SIM in my tablet but forward any SMS message sent to my personal number to a work phone, so that I can just carry the work phone.
I have found Auto SMS since my last update, but this is not compatible with the nexus 7. I will see if there is a way to get this app to work.
I will update if I get any further.
T.
have you try mighty text? try that one first

Thanks for the further replies here.
I don't think mighty text will work, it seems to be a way to read and reply to texts received on your phone, but handled by a tablet or computer as the viewing device.
I need a way to auto forward SMS messages to a different number.
Regards
Tony.
Progress
OK, I installed auto SMS onto my touchpad and then used titanium backup to extract the application.
I've side loaded this onto my nexus 7 and so far my tests have been successful.
The auto forwarded text messages come through as
<0123 123123> Mr FirstName SecondName: Content of message
I can either call the originator back, or switch to a new message and reply back directly via SMS from the work phone.
Thanks
T.

Can you please share it somehow?
Thanks in advance!
Edit: in meanwhile I found and installed it, works well

I haven't tried it but if it's VZW related I will not put it on my device, I don't trust them.
I have used it on my PC.
When you first run it, it takes a while to download the last 3 months worth of text messages to/from your account....
...which in itself is scary....
I used it as my primary Texting App because it makes it effortless to sync across to my Tablet, and also allow texting from my Tablet. I don't trust Verizon either, but this is a dang good program. Put it on my spouses phone and tablet as well. Plus, I flash my phone(s) often and this actually syncs all SMS and MMS.

I also figured out today that somehow, this app running on a PC shows when some other parties are typing. I suspect it's when the other party is using the messages app vs. the stock SMS app. The friend that I was chatting with earlier when I spotted this is coming over shortly, so I'll see whether she's using the stock messaging app, or "Verizon Messages".

Thank you for the link. I was unaware that this even existed! Downloading it now to play with it - whoot!
So my friend is using an S5 with the Messages+ app set as default SMS app on her phone. They must've done that from the factory?
I'm willing to bet this is in preparation for the move to VoLTE. (The messges+ app uses the internet to send messages vs. SMS messaging which is carried on the 1x network)
