Updated to FB13 and now bubble SMS app???? - Epic 4G General

Yes I did a quick search for this but old threads on unofficial release. Now Froyo 2.2.1 is out here comes the question about this new SMS client that looks like the stupid iPhone chat client with bubbles.
I am going through Android market to find one that resembles the old one. I guess only way now is find a decent client with a theme go to with it.
Any suggestions?

Froyo has a new theme to its messaging app. Just the way it is as far as I know.
If you really don't like it, you can install Handcent or one of the other third party apps instead. Just turn off your stock messaging notifications first.

I like the bubbles LOL
Sent from my Epic 4g Runnin Froyo...rooted for my pleasure!!

The bubbles would be nice if they were more low vision friendly. Any way to change the font sizes and bubble colors?

Chomp SMS, people. You can customize 99% of it.

At work, so I can't spend a lot of time searching....I had this complaint with DK28 froyo preview....there is a zip file you can flash in CWM recovery called something like No Bubbles SMS that will put it back to "normal".....
Free and works perfectly...Haven't gotten to install EB13 yet so can't confirm it will still work, but I don't see why it wouldn't...

Handcent runs circles around Chomp, try that homie

Ive messed with pocket cm and a few others. What are you all using for a CM? Anything that loads at least as fast as the stock one?
I use the Pocket CM .16 It loads a bit faster than .15. If you find other let us know.
DJ
pocketcm obviously.
PocketCM .16.
I use PocketCM also...just started actually. I'm having a few problems though. Any help would be appreciated.
1) In SMS, the keyboard pops up even when I'm using the built-in. I can't figure out how to stop it.
2) My outgoing SMS disappear for some reason
3) When I get a new SMS message, I still get the notification from the native messaging program, and not from PocketCM

Can't help with the last two. I get the notifications, didn't think of it as abnormal. The sent message disappearing was just a matter of scrolling down for me.
But the first with the keyboard popping up...
Go to the very top, middle of screen, press it, press "choose SIP" and choose "menubutton.nosip.tex".
If you're using PocketCM keyboard, that is notorious for getting "stuck". I removed it. You have to soft reset to get rid of it.
Thanks Frankenbike. That worked for the SIP.
As for the sent messages disappearing...they're nowhere. As soon as I navigate away from a conversation, they diseappear, and when I go back to a conversation, all of the sent ones are gone and I just have the incoming ones. It's weird.
hey, you need to go into mail settings and tell it to save copies of sent messages, then it will keep all of your sent messages there (don't delete them from the default program either...or they dissappear)
as for the sent message thing, if you look there is a cab file for a registry edit that gets rid of the sent message notification
as for the default messaging taking over... 0.15 would take over sms, but 0.16 won't... yet, it has been discussed on pocketcm.com, and apparently when the full release comes it, 0.16 will do that as well.
goodluck
I'm fed up with PocketCM. It's a great project and service for the community, but it's majorly buggy with every release. Not to mention, I've tried all the suggestions to try and stop it from defaulting as the sms program, but nothing changes.
I don't know what he's talking about when he says change your settings.ini when you received a new text.
I've looked at funcontact and icontact, and both seem much more robust and polished, then again funcontact is not free. I'm gonna give them a shot and I'll report back here =D

remember that pocketcm is still a beta program. its only v.15 stable release. I expect great things once it reaches v1
I tried Finger Friendly, PocketCM (which is good) and a couple others; I just decided to stick with stock. With quick index and touchflo, I can get to whomever I want to call pretty quick...
...and its just one less app loaded and taking room/memory.
Pocket CM Rocks....!!!! HAVENt used anything else. Love my Photo for contacts.. With my Outlook. Its great...
SMS PocketCM NOT sending
I downloaded PocketCM .19 a few days ago. I sent an SMS once and after that it stopped working. What can i do to fix this?
random access
I use the HTC app random access - seems to work well, has all the letters on the side of the screen for finger friendly scrolling. I took it from the all HTC OEM apps post.
FunContacts by vito technology looks like a good smooth app and loads/responds fast (very similar to pocketCM), but I will stick with Random Access until they integrate the SMS (coming soon!) <-- as promised on the website for the past 3 months lol ...http://www.iwindowsmobile.com/
EDIT: of course if Windows Mobile 6.1 delivers as promised with SMS messaging no one will care
definitely a random access guy, myself. tried pocketcm, hated the integrated texting. i like the texting that comes with WM. if there was a way to completely remove it from that app it would be great but ill stick to RA until then
I use icontact. Its easy to use and scrolls with my finger.
I like Pocket CM, much better than the built in WM one. Integrated SMS is great. The built in WM SMS is so clumsy.

You need to hold Send for about a sec or 2. he created a delay and i think on his website he mentions how to lower or higher the threshold
using the original sms prog with pocketcm i find works better

Sms Timp Stamp problem

hi all i have had my hero for about 2 weeks i bought it used from ebay and love it i just have a problem though. For whatever reason on the stock rom and any custom rom i use i get this time stamp issue where it has my received text about 3 to 4 mins ahead of the actually time. Its annoying because it makes the damn threaded text conversation out of order. I have T-mobile U.S.A and i was wondering if anyone had this problem or a solution to it. I know of handcent and chompsms but i rather not use them since i like the stock hero sms style any help would be great thanks!
I had this aswell, pretty annoying. Plus I didn't like the fact the timestamps weren't held on the stock messaging app either, since it's good to know when you sent a certain text sometimes more specific than 'Yesterday'. So yeah, have been using Handcent which I also thought 'Why should I?', but I've had no problems with it and now its just part of how I use my phone.
Yea its great i like it but i just prefer the look of the standard htc one but i might just say to hell with it and use that or chomp

SMS Alternative to Messaging?

Tried searching for a similar topic, but couldn't find one. If there is one, I will gladly be yelled at for my incompetence and pointed in that direction.
Running Darchdroid 2.7 and it's fantastic. Only issue is that I prefer some eye candy in my SMS program but I don't want keyboard lag. With the AOSP Messaging.apk, the lag is virtually nonexistent. With Handcent, it bogs down enough to be noticeably frustrating. Does anyone have suggestions for other SMS apps that look a little better w/o significant lag? I know of Chomp, but last time I used it I got lag with both the AOSP and xda keyboards.
Thanks in advance.
Handcent worked great for me if I turned off haptic feedback. The only lag problem I had was with the keyboard. Have you tried that?
I have. And even with haptic feedback off there seems to be a clear difference between typing in the standard Messaging app and in Handcent. Most likely I'll return to it, but I figured I would get some opinions.
Hmm, I'm sorry I can't help more. I really liked Handcent. To be honest, the only time I use the messaging app, though, is when I yell at people that don't use my Google Voice number to send messages. I use that app. I don't like flair, though.
Yes, I'm old-school and my emails are all raw text. None of this rich text or, tech lords forbid, pictures and backgrounds. Oh, and get off my lawn! *shakes fist*
ChompSMS?
10charlimit
The two big apps are chompsms and handcent. I've always liked/preferred Handcent.
I use Handcent with no problems on my Hero with that same ROM. I also use a Task Manager app to close random programs in the background to free up RAM. No lag with it

[Q] Eclair MMS app on Froyo?

Hello everyone!
Just recently I got the 2.2 OTA for my Droid (rooted) and I'm absolutely loving it, except for one thing: the new MMS app. I strongly dislike the new look; I don't want to see my own profile icon and I definitely don't want to see several of each icon. I really liked the way the Eclair MMS app looked, and I really liked seeing my friends' facebook statuses next to their contact icon.
I've tried replacing the Froyo Mms.apk with the Eclair Mms.apk, which could display everything and worked perfectly fine except for when I actually went to send a message. It would force close and never show that the message actually sent, even though I got replies back, so I know they sent. Also, in order to get this to work, I had to remove Mms.odex. Once I saw that the Eclair app displayed everything and seemed to work fine, I (foolishly) erased my backup of Mms.odex and now I can't run the standard Froyo Mms.apk. Luckily, I did find a modified app that I can use in the meantime, so I'm not totally out of luck right now.
Is there any way to get the old Eclair MMS app/look back? I would REALLY love it! And please don't just suggest Handcent or Chomp. I've tried them and I just don't like them. I went through all the styling and customization options and I just couldn't get it to look like I want. All I want is the old Eclair app back, not alternatives (unless they look almost identical to Eclair's). If it's impossible, I guess I'll deal with it, but "impossible" and "Android" don't really go together...
Thanks in advance!
edit:
I attached two screenshots taken out of an emulator, just in case anyone isn't familiar (why you'd need to see them, I dunno, but I figure more info is better).
Bump. This is a good question. I hadn't really even though about how much better the 2.1 vs 2.2 SMS/MMS app. I knew there was something different but thank you for laying it out. I'm having a problem where the app isn't posting my icon. It is synced with my Facebook contacts so I don't see why it doesn't show my avatar, and if it isn't supposed to then why even change it? No sir, I don't like it. If there is any way to downgrade to the earlier messaging app I would very much be interested in knowing.

Shameless bump. Still driving me crazy. Hoping there's an alternative by now?

[Q] Removal of Stock SMS

I have searched far and wide, and have been unable to find a solution, but I am sick of the SMS/MMS included in the stock Samsung rom. The lack of Hyperlink support kills me... Any way to get the stock messaging app working or any roms which have the stock messaging app?
Try Handcent in the market. I use it over the stock MMS.

Really, you searched far and wide?
It seems to me like you probably didn't actually use the "search" function at all.
If you had, you very quickly would have found this thread, that I originally started, about stock 2.1 apps working on the vibrant, heck it was only at the bottom of page 2 of this very forum, not buried under hundreds of threads/pages.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731822
If you had honestly searched, and replied in that thread, I probably would have even typed out everything step-by-step again, for like the 50th time to help make sure you get it installed correctly, but wow, now I'm just getting annoyed.
Sigh, I totally understand why so many DEV's don't ever respond here anymore. =(

Just get hand cent or chompsms from the market. Then in the stock messaging app turn off notifications and in chomp or hand cent turn them on.
i am using handcent.. works flawless for me.. never have any lag time and/or force close.. i want to get rid of the stock sms also but i have not found anything here yet..
EDIT: I remove the mms.apk and mms.odex from the system/app folder.. now i don't see the mms icon and just using Handcent..

Then busybox cp the vanilla MMS app to /system/app
The end.
You can open hyperlinks in the sms/mms app included on the phone. Tap the message and you can then tap on the hyperlink to open it in your browser
So much fail in one thread, ha.
