I had all of my SMS messages for over a year saved on the phone. A couple thousand of them at least. Until today.
I was receiving a couple of SMS from a friend of mine and lamenting that the built in messaging software doesn't provide a nice way to see a message at a glance without having to unlock the phone and bring down the notification bar, etc. With my G1 I had been using SMS popup for most of this past year and I liked it, but thought I would just try seeing how it was living with the basic messaging system on the N1 since I got it.
So, just as I'm thinking that maybe I should reinstall SMS popup since the built-in support had me swiping and swiping too much to just check the messages I get a FC on the "MMS" system app. Through the FC screen I could see all the thread of messages and was worried that if I FC'd it then I would lose the latest message. Well, that's not exactly the danger there.
I OK'd the FC message and the messaging app closed, and then I brought it back up and I have 1 single message saved - just that last message, nothing else. All couple thousand messages my phone had been dutifully saving for me for over a year - from the earliest RC releases of Android 1.0 when I got my G1 the night before it was released - all the way through cupcake and donut, all the way through my experiments with using Cyanogen through the month of December - through thick and thin - all of them are gone now from one FC on a seemingly innocuous message.
And, even more oddly - the single message I'm left with doesn't show the sender's contact picture.
Grrrrr... Should have backed up more often I guess. At least I have a backup from a couple of weeks ago when I switched from my G1 to my N1.
So, beware - backup your SMS/MMS early and often if you want to save your history...
Try using handcent app it has pop up built in also.

Nope... no reason to switch if you've already paid for MBP. Probably want to start using the scheduled backup now though, eh?
Just out of curiousity, why would you want to keep all your SMS from the past year?

Thank you. I was wondering the same exact thing. If they were that important, why not have people send messages to your gmail so that it's saved to the cloud. . . Or, setup a GoogleVoice account and have all SMS go there, then forward to your phone, so that they're still on the cloud.

The phone keeps up with it quite fine. In the first 1.0 releases it would take a long time to open the Messages app if you had more than a few dozen messages, but they fixed that in one of the earlier releases and so there was no real performance penalty to keeping all messages. By the time I reached enough messages for it to possibly trigger that performance problem they had released the fix. And since then it's been smooth sailing with upwards of 4000 messages.
My question back is - why delete them? I'm a pack rat. I save things, especially when there is no reason to get rid of them. Now, keeping physical things around the home - that can get to be a problem and so there is a cost to keeping everything, but email and SMS - keeping them is essentially "free" (I've never even noticed the storage hit on any of my Blackberry or Android phones) and you never know when you are going to want to go back and say "Actually, you texted me XXX and YYY back in March" just to needle someone... ;-)
And yes, I have a couple of gigabytes worth of email saved on my laptop from the past decade or so too. (Though I do delete most messages at work - anything of the nature of "this weekly meeting will be held in such and such a room" or "Can someone fix the build?" or an automated status message from a server get deleted, but anything with any technical content gets saved...and has occasionally proven useful...)

They aren't "that important". I'm just a data packrat by nature. Storage is cheap nowadays. ;-)

I haven't delved into Google Voice at this point, but that does sound like an interesting solution...
I can't imagine why you would want to keep a years worth of sms!
I purge all mine fairly regularly anyway, just to clean up.
I use G-backup to backup my SMS/MMS and call logs to GMail
Fair enough. I am a huge car nut, and have a bit of a pack rat nature as well. So, I have a garage stall filled with spare parts for Volvo 240's, and then random bits from other cars that might be useable on a Volvo 240, or a future planned project car. As well, I have managed to gather a small pile, yes small, of tools.
I just never though SMS would be affected by a pack rat mentality. For me, it is one of the few things I do keep neat and clean. Hell, I am that guy that saves 1 of every different beer bottle he has ever had, and so forth. I got it from my mom, she had 3 giant plastic buckets filled with receipts from who knows how long(at least 15 years!)
I had this happen to me as well and I was pretty pissed. I'm a packrat by nature as well, so this didn't sit well with me. And it seemed to happen in a similar way with me. I was using chompsms and got a new text, read it, went back to my conversation list, and it was the only one in there, and even then that text was the only text in that conversation.
But I guess it was time to start over anyways, but with the kind of stuff I'm involved with, text records can be very important sometimes.
They're just texts, no one cares about them.

I'm having an issue with Google Voice that I've never encountered before. I'm running Fresh Toast 2.1 and cannot play Google Voice messages through the earpiece. No matter what I do, they only play through the speaker. Is this an issue that anyone else has encountered?
Can someone that hasn't upgraded to 0.3.4 yet post the google voice 0.3.2 apk for me?
Thanks guys (and girls )
I have it in a myBackup. I haven't gotten a message yet, so I can't tell you if the update is working or not. I will try to pull the apk out of the zip. Whats your email?

Nope didn't work...this is so weird!
I had it happen to me. I toggled the speaker and headset in settings but that didn't work. However, after(i think) a phone restart it worked properly.
I have a perhaps related issue with the audio streams from MLB At Bat '10. Occasionally the phone will refuse to play audio through the mini headphone jack and I have to reboot the phone to get it to recognize.
This also goes for built-in voicemail playback. I haven't verified that it's not due to me casually killing the wrong process after the phone boots to save memory but it seems it will work fine for a few days and then without a reboot stop working eventually.
IM MAD!!
I just graduated college May 17, and i just now see that they offer google voice invites to students with a .edu email
I went to see if i could still access my email, what do you know im already out of the system!
If anyone feels generous could you please send me a google voice invite
I you want ill pitch ya some moohlaa your way for burning ur time up for me.
my email is [email protected] , Im not trying to begg i just dont know any other way right now.
It took me a while to find someone that had an invite, because only people who were already members when they originally distributed invites got them. So there are a very limited number of invites. I didn't know about the edu email thing though, my university allows us to keep our emails for life(graduated 2 years ago).

F-Secure sms to finland?
I've had F-secure anti-theft in my phone for a while now. The txt location service works great, and last month I tried changing the sim, and guess what, got a sms on my backup phone with the new sim's phone number, which is exactly what it is supposed to do.
However, i checked my itemized bill today, and see the program sent an sms to Finland immediately after texting me. The number was 358400112368 . Googled this number and only got two vague references to f-secure on a nokia. Why in the world would they need to txt their mothership about my sim? Anyone else using f-secure anti-theft? Please check your bill and let us know if it sent a txt to finland.
As far as using other similar programs:
Mylookout : never worked for me, website says searching, and times out.
remotetracker : Stay away from this program!! its txt request uses no password, so anyone who knows you have the program installed can secretly monitor you via sms. An intentional oversight from the developer perhaps? And pretty malicious at that too! Edit: got it, see post below.
ms myphone : free version can only check the daily sync log. I cannot initiate a location search unless i pay, or am I doing it wrong?
so, anyone with f-secure got the txt to 358400112368? I guess this post will be the only 3rd google search result for this number?

my bad. thanks Samsamuel for the correction. i re-read the first whole page of that remoteTracker thread and the word "password" was never mentioned in his post or instructions.
as far as my original question regarding F-secure, anybody else see the outgoing text to finland when they change SIMs?
no worries.
i for one can't rate remotetracker highly enough. i cook my own rom, so its cooked in complete with settings, so its completely hard reset safe. only way to stop it working is by flashing.
that random text you mention sounds a little iffy, you tried emailing them? see what they have to say?
another vote for remotetracker.
It found my phone when left in a taxi
the F-Secure thing looks nice, i think im gonna try it this evening
lets see if it really sends a sms to finnland xD
I came across this thread, and just downloaded (didn't install yet) the f-secure app.
A couple things I don't understand.
I believe I have read posts here about needing a "backup mobile number", for the company to send SMS to, if something suspicious is happening with the phone.
But what if one only has one mobile number, no backup? Is the app then useless? (Couldn't there be an e-mail, or a call to the landline?)
Also, I see that besides giving this app away, F-Secure sells "mobile secuirty". (I guess that means anti-virus and such. Is that really necessary? I have never used an AV on my phone before, and never had a problem with that AFAIK.)
With the post about the SMS to Finland (probably company headquarters), it occurs to me, they may give away this anti-theft app, in order to get your phone #, and send you text messages advertising their AV app? I wouldn't want to get spammed with text messages. Has that happened to anyone using this?
remotetracker can send email
i've changed sim few time. fsecure only send sms to the assigned number (i know, i've itemized billing, and i can send sms internationally).
anyway, since it can never reply with correct location, and i've already figured out how to use remotetracker, i'm ditching it too. plus, fsecure will always pop up with it stupid checking for update while i'm using my phone. can't it check quietly?

see my previous post. it always say location not available.
I just tried lookout. I like it more than remotetracker because it's easier to use (the online "dashboard" makes it easy). The thing I hated the most about remotetracker (and other apps dealing with coded SMS) is that I would have to use an authorized phone and the proper codes to do whatever I need to do. At least with lookout, I can just go online and kill all my data and locate my phone.
I tested the "locate" feature. It found my phone in 2 minutes, but it was a little over one mile away from my phone!
The "scream" feature: It's a loud firetruck-type siren...it was a little bad because San Bruno, CA (one city away from me) had a horrible fireball accident a couple of days ago.
I guess it does its job. The locate feature is decent, but to think that it was off by 1-mile, it could make a difference in a big city.
When you have a text log with the original person? I have noticed it shows up in the notification tray under 1 name and then under the actual msg app its to the right person but it makes me scared at times who the last txt REALLY went too..
In the stock messaging app (all I use) Ill start a txt conversation with person x then down the line it'll send the next to person y... idk if it was a confusion between the linked fbook accounts but it almost got me in trouble so now for safety sake I dont have fbook linked to contacts...
Anyone notice this or is it just me?
Sorry to hear this. If its the same two contacts each time, I'd suspect your two contacts may have automatically linked or merged phone numbers. Inspect each one's details for the other's phone number. For example, I found that two contacts who shared the same email were merged, completely deleting one's name entirely.
I'm using Handcent myself so not sure if this would be related, but I've found that text messages received from one particular number (my bank's alerts) always appear as another contact (a friend) in the initial pop-up alert but then appear correctly in Handcent's actual message threads. I've since swapped and rebuilt the handset to no avail. This issue remains a mystery.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
not the same contact. Thats what I originally thought it was something merged weird but its random. so I am not too sure but it makes me whery what I send to certain ppl. For some reason im friends with enemies of the other friend so saying 1 thing starts a fight btwn the 2.. lol I cant win.
same problem, HTC EVO, seems like it goes to a random person, facebook contact or not.
This is a huge problem and is related to the Android platform, not just the Vibrant. You can find more information in the following two links:
1. www.google.com.vn/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=345259e6d424bad3&hl=en
2. http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=9392
The best thinking that we have on the problem so far is that it is in the ComposeMessageActivity.java file. But it would be great to get more eyes looking over the code to try to get this one licked.
Note: A 3rd party app may make the situation better, but will not resolve it. Best solution is that if you receive a text or e-mail message (or anything that plays with the notification bar or takes focus from what you're typing), quit your message and start over.
This scares the hell out of me. Is there any specific instance when this always happens?
Strange, never had this problem and I've been using Android since the G1. There must be something you are doing or a setting you have that specifically triggers it.
There's nothing related to Facebook - I don't have anything linked on my phone. And I never had this issue on my G1, but I also didn't start screwing with the Vibrant until recently, so it's not something I'm "doing" - it's happened within weeks of getting the Vibrant on launch day.
It can be quite scary. Luckily my friends getting msgs meant for my wife hasn't bit me in the ass yet. But if it ever gets mixed up going to a female friend, I could see this not working out in my best interests, ya know?
-bZj
I've had the same problem on my vibrant and my g1. What I've noticed is that if I send a nescafe to person A then receive a message from person B and access that message by using the notification bar and answer person B, the message can go to person A (the last person I sent to.) I've found that if I remember to not use the notification bar and only access messaging by using the icon, I haven't had the problem. Not the best solution but at least it seems to work.
This could be bad
This could be bad especially if you have more than one girlfriend
Omg glad im not the only one. Had to couch it one night cuz of this issue. Now i only text my girl from my phone. Everyone else i text through gv lol.
I use the notification bar all the time and occasionally reply to the weekend person but that's just because I didn't press on the right notification...
yea i had this happen to me as well. luckily or unluckily a txt i was sending to a girl whom i was fooling around with got sent to a girl i had just met 3 days prior. after that needless to say she wouldnt talk to me waa waaa. it was prob a random bug introduced in earlier builds.. say around a month and a half ago. oh yea i had about 12 threads running around 50 a piece.. maybe that had something to do with that and maybe the random stuttering of the vibrant when too many programs are running. Havent had that happen again thankfully but one would have to say.. slow down on the texting sometimes lol

The evidence seems to suggest that the problem is in the ComposeMessageActivity.java file, which means it is not SMS Client related. Said differently, using a 3rd party SMS client might reduce the likelihood of the problem but does not eliminate it.
Now, to answer your question. It seems like the problem happens when multiple threads or events happen when using SMS. For example, it might happen when you are editing a message and when you receive a SMS text message. (It is more likely if you use the notification bar to pull down the message rather than navigating to it in the SMS client.) The good news is that people are trying to reliably reproduce the problem so that we can troubleshoot and fix the problem. (See my earlier post in this thread for a link of those discussions).

Based on the review of the code, one fix seems to have been made to the 2.2 code branch. However, people using 2.2 have indicated that they are still experiencing the problem. The problem is in the library. However, there is a very unique set of circumstances that have to occur before you see the problem. It's quite possible that people who haven't seen this problem yet just use the UI in such a way that the problem doesn't show up.

i second that. this glitch can be nasty. hopefully it will be addressed soon. GV for the win.
I have the same issue here. It will show one name but have a conversation for another, or the name and the convo are right, but the picture is wrong.
I think I found a solution to the thing. Been getting it a LOT and pissed me off on more than a single occasion.
So. If you are talking to someone and SUDDENLY receive a text message from that person but when you open it, it changes the name of the contact to someone else or ....I guess everyone who has experienced it KNOWS what it looks like. So when you GET IT, open it, then CLOSE the whole messaging app. Then restart it and it should fix itself and be back to texting the right person. If it doesn't (or if you want to be on the safe side), kill the messaging app with a task killer or task manager and restart it.
This has fixed it recently for me. Had it happen a total of about 15 times, with me finding and using the trick about the latest 5 times and it worked every time.
Note that I AM running Bionix Fusion 1.0 with Voodoo if that makes any bit of a difference.
I just got my A500 yesterday and spent all night and day trying to figure out if it was possible to make phone calls, receive phone calls, send and receive text messages. Finally found the solution and it works great. Its a given that you will need to be on Wifi or 3G (tethering or Portable WLAN). Using a FREE app called Viber allows you to make FREE calls and text messages over Wifi and 3G/4G to other Viber users (Android and iOS), what sets this app apart from others is that it maintains your phone #, no need for a new #, pin or username. Only problem is that upon setup the app requires to send you a text message to verify your phone number to setup your account, which is NOT possible on the Acer. I found a simple work around this to problem, so here we go!
What you need:
1. Rooted phone (Android of course)
2. Viber App, its FREE (attached) (Phone ONLY)
3. Rooted Acer
4. Titanium Backup (Installed on both devices)
Instructions:
1. Install Viber on your phone and set up your account, very simple and fast.
2. After installation and confirmation (important: I would make a call or send a few text messages to make sure it's working),
3. Open Titanium Backup and make a back up of Viber
4. Transfer the back up of Titanium Backup to your Acer, make sue you place it the correct folder: sdcard/TitaniumBackup (or where ever you store your Titaniun Backups on your Acer).
5. Open Titanium Backup on your Acer and Restore the Viber app with data
That's it you can now make calls and text messages using Viber, the voice quality is awesome and the speaker is loud and clear!
Hopes this helps, it did for me
You can send invites to your contacts within the Viber app, once someone installs and setups Viber you will receive a pop up notice.
***Do NOT run Viber on both devices at the same time, it may cause FC and routing calls/text messages to the wrong device, simply shut down Viber (More>>Exit) on the device you are not using***

Decent find on making an app work. Question, what's wrong with Skype or gtalk?

As for me... I have 16 family/friends on gtalk (only 4 sign on & more than half the time they never notice I sent them a message, "I didnt know") or they are NEVER signed on, either they dont know how to sign on or dont use it at all. Skype, I have 0 family/friends that use it and I not to crazy about it... I just like the simplicity of Viber and ease of use, when you get a text message a pop up appears (like HancentSMS) and you can reply right from there.
I guess what it comes down to is personal preference
would this conflict with google voice?

No not at all, thats the beauty of this app, it does NOT use your google voice number. It uses your actual cell number
I've been using Viber on my phone along with google voice and when people call or text me using Viber it does not effect google voice at all.
Awesome! Works great only downside I found is it will auto rout to the tab unless you turn it off when trying to call to the phone!
But that is minor compared to the awesomeness of the text and calling.! I love how I do not have to leave the app im in to reply.
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this tip. I just got it on my tab and placed a call and its great. The odd force close, but otherwise great
Sent from my A500 using XDA Premium App
good it work~~~

Yeah, you really shouldnt have both Viber services running on both devices... Turn one off when using another (guess I should add that to the OP)
The pop up is awesome, dont need to leave your current app to reply

The FC happens here and there, mostly when running Viber on both devices, close one before starting the other and you should be good to go!

Glad I could help you enjoy your Acer more
Okay just so I'm clear on how viber works... The person i'm sending the text/call to must also have viber installed correct?

+1. If I can't get my friends and family to use Skype etc they're not going to use this.

Yes that is correct... The FREE app can be found in the Market (Android) and in the App Store (Apple iOS)

The difference is that this app runs in the background, your friends and family DONT need to log in, when you call from Viber the phone rings right away, just like your stock phone app does (its just purple). When you text someone a pop up appears on the screen... see attachements
(Yes I have a friend that's a d!ck head and a brother I call Monster)
perhaps a silly question, but it wasnt specified... does the phone need to be pluggd into the tab for this to work? r once its set up it will function as long as there is wifi?
from Sams inFuse... inFused GB

No it does not ... You can leave the phone at home, car or wherever. As long as you have some sort of data connection, whether it be wifi or tethered 3g/4g
