Ok.... this seems to be giving me the biggest headache yet. I've tried using some of the apps available to sync contacts over-the-air.... only to come up short with chunks of the contacts names missing. I've taken the phone down to AT&T to have them copy the contacts from my iPhone to the SIM for my Atrix, and when i tried texting a friend of mine, it told me the phone number was invalid. Also noticed my contacts that i had multiple numbers for only showed one number, which could be why the text didn't work.... might have been to his home number. Now i've tried sync-ing my iPhone contacts with iTunes using Windows Contacts, went to the contacts folder for my user account on my computer, selected all the contacts, and chose to export them in CSV format, and the Moto Phone Portal utility for importing the contacts in the web browser can't complete it saying it's an invalid format.
Anyone know of an easy way to do so short of typing them all in manually?

Got gmail? you can import the csv directly to there, merge/delete contacts there, and they'll sync.
There's an app I used that let me export my contacts to a .csv file, and sync them with google contacts, which were pushed to my Atrix automatically.
Setting Gmail up on the iPhone as an exchange acct should definitely sync your contacts.
Yea.... but that also leads to it importing every single e-mail address i've ever sent an e-mail to..... which i'd like to avoid, even if there is that option to only show those contacts with a phone number.

You have the option in the Atrix to only show contacts with phone numbers if that's any help.
I gave up and just did it by hand.
Don't!! OMG!! there's a SUPER easy way to do this, and it takes literally a few seconds.
1. You've got your iPhone, Sync it to iTunes (on the computer), THEN choose to sync your contacts with Google contacts.
A- Before doing this, ERASE ALL of your google contacts.
2. After you've synced with the iPhone All of your iPhone contacts will now appear magically in your google contacts in a second.
Then just sign into your atrix and they will all appear on the atrix.
Boom done.
If you have an iPhone or iPod touch, you can use iTunes (version 7.7 or later) to synchronize your Google Gmail contact list with your iPhone or iPod touch address book
Mac OS X
Install iTunes 7.7 or later. The latest version of iTunes is available here.
Connect your iPhone or iPod touch.
Select your iPhone or iPod touch in the device list.
Click the the Info tab.
Select Sync Address Book contacts.
Select Sync Google Address Book contacts.
Click the Configure button.
Enter your Google Gmail ID and password, then click OK.
Sync your iPhone or iPod touch.
Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7
Install iTunes 7.7 or later. The latest version of iTunes is available here.
Connect your iPhone or iPod touch.
Select your iPhone or iPod touch in the device list.
Click the Info tab.
Select Sync contacts with.
Select Google Contacts.
Enter your Google Gmail ID and password, then click OK.
Sync your iPhone or iPod touch.

So.... you trade off the lack of useless contacts on the Atrix with the lack of your usual contacts for Gmail. That seems almost counter-productive if you ask me.
I'm just looking for a way to get my contacts, with all their numbers where they should be, and without having to do the whole "Only show contacts with phone number" thing.... and so far none of the logical ways of doing so seem to be doing the logical thing.

That would work if my iphone would actually sync with itunes in a timely fashion. I just synced my iphone 3g, to get all my pictures and music, it took 4 hours... IT was quicker for me to do it by hand.

Yes... i did. Did you not read mine? The part i quoted was from the post above yours. And the second part i posted was in regards to your post. Kinda would prefer not to have to use the "Only show contacts with phone number" option if i don't have to.... which is exactly what using Google Contacts entails...
btw, when I use to sync Google contacts with my iP4 I never had useless email addresses sitting there. It only saved contacts that I entered and saved intentionally.
Bump app
i just downloaded "Bump" you can get the app for the iphone and for the Android. it took me about 20 sec to transfer aprox 100 contacts with pictures and all info intact.

anyhow just import your csv file to your google account.
if you're concerned about a "clean" sync...simply create a fresh new google account first.

This is my first Android phone so I'm a little unsure of the following.
I've got a number of contacts that were on my sim card as well as my Google contact list, so now I've got double entries for a number of people. Is it best to just delete the Google contact ones or the sim contacts? Are there any advantages or disadvantages of one over the other? Like for example if I have no network connection does my phone still list the Google contacts?
I went for storing my contacts only on google.
As far as I know contacts are stored on the phone locally, so even if you dont have a network connection, you still have access to your contacts.
As far as duplicate entries, you can choose which contacts are shown on the phone. I would pick a method and stick with it. I've never been a big fan of storing contacts on a sim card. I prefer having them stored in the cloud.

Look for an app called MyBackup pro which basically helps you to store all kinds of stuff including contacts to the sd card or on its servers.
http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.rerware.android.MyBackupPro
I've moved over to storing them on Gmail. For some reason yesterday they all vanished (I had synced them with Outlook too) but the Gmail ones got sync'd back pretty quickly. Then it hooked up with Facebook and put contact profile pictures back in too
+1 for google.
knowing that they are all there and will come back as soon as i sign in, means i am not worried about trying every app under the sun for the first few weeks to see what works, what doesn't and what breaks the phone, knowing i can just hard reset afterwards if the worst happens and everything is back within seconds!!
+1 for gmail. You can edit the phonebook from any web browser. You can force-sync by turning off&on the gmail syncing on the Hero. You can turn off displaying the SIM card contacts in the Peoples app settings, no need to delete them in case you need to use the SIM in a dumb-phone later.
I opted for storing contacts all on gmail and went through the following process.
Sync'ed all my old contacts from previous Kaiser into outlook
Manually updated outlook contacts merging in all google email contacts aswell.
Used HTCSync to update phone with contacts - worked a charm and kept all contact pictures.
Forced a sync with google on my Hero hoping that all new contacts now on my Hero will automatically become updated/created in GMail.
Unfortunately this isn't the case and all emails were sync'ed between gmail and hero, but contacts still only appear on my device.
Have I missed a setting or is it not possible to bi-directionally sync contacts between gmail and hero ?
When you create the calendar/contact item, are you selecting to put it in the google group?
Create a new contact and in Contact type (just below the name) make sure to select Google. It usually defaults to Phone, which only syncs with the god awful HTC Sync software.
once created a contact in the wrong group, you can't change it. delete it and start again.
For those of us a bit paranoid about OUR data, Is there a built in way to sync/export/import data as in Active Sync?
I mean also accessing my data while in out-of-coverage areas, in-flight mode, etc.
Regards.
The data is always available on the phone, no matter whwere you store it.
Just cos it's stored on the google servers does not mean that you can not access it when you are out of service area...that would be stupid.
It just means that instead of you having to hook the phone up to your pc using that god awful HTC Sync software, it syncs automatically to the google servers. It is still stored on the phone locally as well.
Whatever gave you the idea that it would not be?

Your contacts are also stored locally on your phone, so even if you don't have service, you won't lose your contacts.

Thanks for explaining, but post #4 above looks scary. Since I don't have any Android phone yet, I thought they might come as the g-mail servers, if you are not online, you can not browse through your "archived" mail.
Regards.
No, they are stored locally.
also, with the mail program, that stores them locally once it has recieved the ones you choose to sync as well.
it's all good!
moved all mine to google
very easy and i love it!

Does a google contact sync to outlook from the phone?
can i DELETE ALL CONTACTS
I'm having such a hard time with contacts on my hero. Wish I would have just had Sprint transfer them over from my Touch Pro. Anyways, I want ONLY the contacts from my old phone, which have been imported into gmail. Is there a way to delete all the crap that was imported into my contacts from Windows Contacts via HTC Sync? Then I can sync only my google contacts and just live with that.
how do I delete all contacts?
I imported contacts from my google account to my phone(stupid move). I should have just selected show contacts from google account. Now I have bunch of useless contacts on my phone(every single person I emailed with gmail, 80+). There's an option to show only contacts with numbers. I just don't get why it imports contacts without phone numbers(just like all the other android phones I had).
Now, how I delete the contacts off my phone?
Al I wanted was import contacts from my google account(with phone numbers cause those are friends I know in real life) and then export them to my sim card. I can't do that cause when you import contacts from your google account it imports everyone that you ever emailed. So stupid.

having your contacts from Google is better imo.no need to mess with your sim

why would u even consider using anything else but android?
like i said go to contacts hit menu and look for display group and click on contacts with numbers
theres an option where you can just show contacts with phone numbers, rather than everyone you have ever emailed. also, just clear some of the contacts you dont normally are in touch with via gmail.
If you wanna delete your contacts simply go into the market and search delete contacts don't remember the icon what it looks like but you should find the app that works

yea well, it's call future proofing. My next phone will probably be android, but just in case.
stop saying contacts with numbers. When you try to copy phone contacts to sim card it shows all contacts, not just ones with phone numbers. You don't get it. Even if I display only contacts with numbers it'll still show all contacts when copying them to sim card.

I was wondering if the general support of DHD under MacOSX, and the practically of it.
Say like I want to sync my iTune songs, iCal event and, Address book with my HTC, will that be a lot of hazzle?
Also, by any chance there are users made their transition from iphone to android? I want to know hows the Contacts management with android compare to the iphone OS?
I am the kind of user that does a lot of texting, emails, has overly crowded schedule on my calendar and take pictures frequently. I was hoping any similar user can share with experience using the DHD, as I am still in deciding if I should get one.
Thanks

Nope I'm very happy with this program. It can make transferring contacts very easy. The contacts are transferring with the picture and all the info. You can also sync calendars and many more things.
Its easy to operate with.
Many thanks for your reply.
I do have another question while on the subject, I assume most of the developer tools here, like S-OFF, radio tool, CWM, CustomROM, etc, are all made for windows platform?

unfortunately yes, they are.
Instead of missing sync I suggest Doubletwist for OS X. It's like iTunes for Android. It even syncs itunes playlists.
Just export your contacts to vCard, then import them in google contacts! about iCal just configure to use google calendar, for iTunes Double Twist

+1.
I own a DHD and an iMac, I use DoubleTwist to sync music.
My address book and iCal are synced with Google Contacts/Calendar and the DHD is synced with my google account.
All the Rooting tools sadly are only for Windows but you can simply use some adb commands for the rooting process.

Is the Google Contacts and Calender synced over the air (wifi/3d) with your android?
I wonder if it is possible to sync my hotmail contacts to the google contacts as well?
Yes, very interesting thread. I am using iPhone 4 now and am considering changing to DHD. I have couple of questions too (especially to those who converted from iP to DHD):
1. Is the phone app and signal better than in iP?
2. Is battery life the same (basically one day) as in iP?
3. From the reviews on UTube I am sensing that navigation/maps are inferior versus the Google Maps for iP. Is it true?
4. Is the system search instant as in iP? How about writing sms or email - when you start typing in the address line, are names appearing instantly?
Thanks in advance!

Yes, but a lot of developers , Cyanogen for one, actually use non windows OSes. So there are manual methods of doing S-OFF and root quite easily, also there are cross platform tools such as QtADB which allow you to manage ADB if your not comfortable with CLI
Well for me I had problems with double twist regarding the meta tags. Do all the editing with another program manually.
For copying mp3 files and photos I use my partition, but for roms and basically all other stuff I use my win 7 boot camp partition.
So I can use all the windows exe files and also don't have to eject the drive after copying some new stuff on my sd card

Not sure if I am right, but reception strength mostly is down to how good your phone network is. Regardless the little incident of the iphone "death grip"
Also, I think we simply cant generalize the battery life of a smartphone base on a few individual cases, because there is so many different things you can do on your smartphone, therefore too many factors to take into account. That being said, I think generally any smartphone that can last a little more then a day is good enough for me, especially when you are around a computer a lot like me. Your phone will hardly die since you are always in the proximity of a charger.
For the Google Maps and GPS function, I would be quite surprise if Google Maps in Android isn't implemented better iPhone. I mean come on, isn't google maps and android made by the same company????
From my observation, I think the Google Search in android is a little better then the standard search in iphone, I could be wrong thou, I would be interested to hear from users with first hand experiences.

I used a I4 for 6 month and now I'm a happy user of a DHD.
1. The signal problem depend on the carrier. I haven't any problem with I4 and it's the same with the DHD.
2. On the beginning, the baterry life is not great but it becomes good after 1 week (1 day but with the I4, I was on 2 day).
3. I used Navigon on I4 and I use the same navigation app on the DHD. The app start more slowly as on the I4 but there is no problem.
4. I doesn't use a lot the search instant. I have no problem with SMS or e-mail writing and the names appear quickly.
Synchronisation with my Mac.
Calendar and Contact : Synchronisation Mac <-> Google <-> DHD. I have before MobileMe. I imported all in Google and activated the synchronisation without any problem.
Itunes, photos, videos, podcast : Salling Media Sync sold on the Mac Store, this sinchronisation is done via USB (faster synchronisation). I have no problem with DHD and the song bought on Itunes. A lot of format are included by HTC.
Thanks a lot! I am starting to consider to wait for the alleged Desire HD2. Is it going to be launched this year indeed? If they launch it that fast this must mean they would be going for fast fixes ver the first version.

Before the synchronisation of ICal with google, I imported all my events im Google (do an export of the events on your desktop and after go to google to import it, by this way, you will have a backup of your events). And after that I have done the synchronisation with ICal. When all Events are in ICal, I deleted the old calendar to delete the double events.

1. Not noticed a difference between the two
2. Owning both, DHD is definitely worse but you can make it a lot better with a heck of a lot of tweaking so if that float your boat then it could be the same again.
3. No way, DHD wins in this area.
4. Yes, both in address line but also in the universal search like with Spotlight
Calendar as faggi highlighted, do an export from iCal first and then import in Google Calendars and then you can subscribe to it in iCal and it will sync with cloud and phone. However please be aware that if you have multiple calendars it looks rather clumsy in iCal when using Google compared to MobileMe
Contacts synching via Google contacts work well. However for some stupid reason, which as far as I have been able to found out has existed for years now, Google has a habit of compressing photos that you assign to contacts. A real bad thumbs down that is. Then also if you have people with double barreled names, pre/post fix titles Google gets its knickers in a twist also. It tries to be too clever in how it tries to understand where the space is and which part of the name goes well. This was perfect in MobileMe and Google is just messing it up, I've had to change my own name to get it to work.
Music/Video/Photos - Doubletwist is your friend, it works well together with iTunes. Just be aware, yet again Google has half heartedly implemented a standard and for whatever daft reason it doesn't recognise compilation albums using the correct MP3 metadata tags so those albums are really mixed up on the device.
Just don't expect the level of integration like on iOS/OSX/iTunes where if you were watching a movie on say your AppleTV and paused it and then continue on your phone it would be exactly there where you left. Android is rather dumb that way.
But otherwise it is an ok phone.
For the radio flash etc had to open Windows but my Windows 7 image in VMWare did it all perfectly fine. For the rest once you install the sdk in OSX you can do anything via the tools in there.
btw, is there a way to unlock the phone using a Mac, or I have to do it thru windows?
thanks

My girlfriends phone has an problem with google right now. Last night I got her HD2 working on mango. She imported her contacts from google just fine.
The phone froze I did a hard reset and it was working with in 20mins. Now google won't sync contacts from google. It will do email but not contacts.
Even if she logs into live and tries to import from her Gmail account it won't import the contacts.
Been like this for 12 hours now.

Google contacts sync problem - SOLVED
Guys, I've just picked up a Nokia Lumia recently and was having problems synching my google contacts phone numbers. I noticed because some mobile numbers were there from my outlook account but the google ones were not.
I remember the opposite of this happening with my Android phone as I wanted to stop all new contacts I added showing up so moved them all out of the "my contacts" group in google.
If you have done this, then select all the contacts you want to see in WP7 and add them to the "my contacts" group in google then re-sync the account on your phone and it will then work perfectly. At least it did for me.
Enjoy

same problem here bro, i am checking all my 500+ contacts right now, and its frustrating
Just got the G4...anyone else not able to change the contact pictures? It let's me go through the motions but doesn't actually save the added/changed picture. WTF???
Edit - Although I can't change/add contact photos on the phone itself, I can change them from within Google Voice and have them sync up that way. While that's fine and dandy, I have to say I don't like it! I have no choice to have the contacts on my phone...they are automatically synced to my Google account. This is yet another MM "feature" I don't want. Whatever, that's me. I guess I have to adapt. I think KK was/is my favorite Android OS.

I've added photos to all my contacts with no problem. I'm not sure what your problem could be but I have 2 G4's that I've added photos to.
Are your contacts saved to your phone only or on your Gmail? I know if you use outlook or Yahoo they can be finicky. It's not a MM thing. It's the standard Google contacts app it may just be where your saving your contacts. I too have no issues saving pictures to them.
For the past 5 years I have only had my contacts on my phone. I export/import (via vcf file) anytime I get a new phone or switch roms. When I imported to the G4 I don't recall it asking to import to the phone or Google. It's my preference to have contacts on the phone...that being said, I have made my changes in Google & have synced to my phone. In the long run I have achieved what I wanted but still cannot change the picture on the phone itself. I also see no option to transfer/display contacts on the phone. Whatever.
Thanks for your input.

When you click on a contract and then go to edit mode by clicking on the pencil looking icon, you don't have a camera symbol near where you would have a contact picture?

Yes, the camera symbol is there. I can browse my gallery, select a picture, and crop it. I click the check mark to save it but it doesn't stick.
I can not change/add contact pictures on the phone. I have to do it through Gmail/Voice online then sync.
That's odd, where is the default save location for your pictures?
SD Card > DCIM. Same as I've always used.

It shouldn't matter but for grins have you tried setting a contact pic from internal storage?
