I went by the local into mobile store (which is now a direct outlet for corp store for T mobile.) and a rep I know showed me the Samsung 4g demo they just got in today. I really like the silver color in the back and the it seems to have a slightly heavier feel to it. Feels better in my hand than my Vibrant does. The demo was fast and very smooth and could not detect any lag. It was showing 4 bars of H and was very very fast downloading from market. Seemed even smoother than the custom roms I have (and have now) have used. I was a little impressed. I still do not believe it is worth an upgrade from my Vibrant but it does have me thinking. Anyone else have any comments or experience with the new 4G?
I got a friend who's a T-mobile rep and one who's a T-Mobile store manager (both at the same store) and I got to play with it a little while. It was pretty nice. It definately feels a little snappier than any of the roms I've used on my Vibrant. I'm pretty stoked about picking mine up tomorrow morning.
And for all the haters pondering as to why I would by a V4G when I already had a Vibrant? I sold my Vibrant for $250, I'm paying $200 for the V4G = no money out of my pocket. $50 extra FTW.

thats cool man... I honestly feel this phone is a decent upgrade untill the summer dual core phones drop. I also am picking one up as soon as my t-mobile opens tomorrow. I'm giving the vibrant to my smartphone virgin girlfriend who couldnt be happier to get my vibrant with bionix V and the purple theme. in turn I get a new SGS4G by starting a line for her and in 5 months im elegable for an upgrade on my line... hello dual core phone.
Yeah i got some hands on time with one a few days ago. It was nice but not impressive. The S2 will be the game changer for me not this one but it still is a nice phone, just only a tad better than the Vibrant

Did you upgrade in order to get the discounted price? If so imo that was a horrible decision with the dual core phones on the horizon and the Vibrant 4G just isn't worth the upgrade with only a few benefits over the original.
Shhhh! Don't say that.
It's cause the screen is nice, obviously...

I thought tmobile doesnt allow subsidized phone prics until two years from previous upgrade. How will u be eligible for an ugrade after 1 year since ur last upgrade?

Important note on internal app storage for the Galaxy 4g...Internal space for apps is about 210mb(1gb total for internal memory this time and the rest is the Rom, etc)...I barley put on any apps and it keeps giving me the warning that my memory is full and I need to uninstall apps even though it says I have 50mb free ...I already moved every app I can the the SD card but missing the old Vibrant's internal storage already...Not going to be so easy to just flash new ROM's either. On a positive note, the phone is fairly responsive compared to Bionix running at 1.4ghz. Of course you can tell the differance, but it doesn't feel as slow as I thought it would

I picked mine up this morning and I have so say that thusfar I am impressed. Does seem to be a bit more snappy than the original, and network speeds are definitely better. I have yet to be able to test the GPS as I picked it up and came straight to work.
A coworker of mine has the original we put them side by side and with him showing a 3G signal I was getting 3000+ on the download speed where as he was only getting 700. He is running the official Froyo update.

You can upgrade before the 2 year mark. I believe you are eligible for a full upgrade discount after 22 months. You are however eligible for discounts prior to that time but it will be at a smaller discount. Lets say at phone is $199 at full discount, then it will most likely be in the $300 - $350 range at one year. I hope that makes sense.
Also note the Vibrant 4G is selling for $149 on amazon right now. Don't tell anyone.
not really sure where to ask this since there isnt a V4G section up yet but has anyone tried rooting this thing yet?
Edit- Right as i went back into general i saw the V4G root thread...whoops! Please ignore.

lol ok, well you can ask the XDA member I sold it to then. Or you can just check my post in the marketplace: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=957171 And yes, that price IS with a two year contract OR if you know someone on the inside with a discount.
Either way, you're still a jealous tool.

I'm in the same boat as you, except I have 26 days to return my Evo to Sprint OR pay $400 in Early termination fees to T-Mobile and lose My Nexus One.. I'm really torn myself. I went out and bough the HTC HD2 when it came out and LOVED the huge screen, but it was obviously Windows mobile. Now with the Evo, it has everything I want, but I would miss the Nexus. I have no idea what to do.
The Epiphany has happened in the form of "root".
Froyo will be just around the corner now and when optimized will make the EVO rock hard (not that it doesn't already). I just boxed up my Nexus yesterday and put it in the marketplace.

Yeah, I'm going to have to sell it to recoup some ETF for T-mobile.
I'm just kind of worried that T-Mobile will come out with some more kick ass devices.
my family just switched over to Sprint from ATT and I sold my N1 for $430 after using it for about 6 months
i loved the N1 because it was the perfect size and pretty damn fast
I am about to cancel my Tmobile line and pay the 200$ ETF. I am sure they will release a badass android eventually(which I have been waiting for) but, I am fine with the EVO for now until something better comes along on sprint.
My 3g Speeds are also faster on sprint than tmobile, and obviously the 4g is nice.

There is that new Samsung phone with 4G. Try it again later 4G will only get better while ATT 3G is at its limit. There is that one droid phone coming, Try tmob if you like pricing. There will be great things coming though xda does not disappoint.
Its just jotted ideas so its not really in any order

Hi, i'm looking at getting a new phone for my wife and been looking at the fascinate from telus as it's on sale for $99 with 3 yr contract.
I heard that telus in the coming weeks will be launching a few new phones though i have no idea what they are or if they'll be any smart phones.
so with that said, if you were to get a phone today, would you still get the fascinate or would you hold off for a couple of weeks?
btw, apparently it comes with froyo so i'm thinking that update fixed some of the issues with gps and such... least i think it would
thanks
No. But, I am on Verizon.
Telus may be a different story.
Nope. I'd choose an HTC or a Motorola over the sammy if I had to do it all over again.
Yes ... but only because of the price I paid. ($50 / no activation)
-Doug
If I could, I'd wait for the dual core phones to come out. If I had to buy now, I'd still get the fascinate. My son has the Incredible, my father-in-law has the X, overall I like the fascinate better than either of those.
Absolutely. I still think it's best in class.
But i agree that if you could wait, wait for a dual core. But for now, there isn't anything the fascinate can't do.
If I had to do it over again, or if I needed a phone right now, yes, I would choose the Fascinate, no doubt about it. It really is a great phone. Not without its quirks and annoyances, but what phone is? If I didn't need a new phone really bad, then given the new powerhouses coming out within the next couple months, I would probably take some time to consider the options. I've never liked Motorola's designs until now, but I must admit that the Bionic looks very tempting. Of course, the locked bootloader crap might give me pause (let's hope they fix that like they claimed they will).
Once rooted and de-bloated, it's still the leader ATM. This will change in a couple of months though.

I got 2 for free and I still don't want them. No one on Craigslist wants them either because I've been trying to trade them for the past month.
thanks for all the responses. my wife doesn't really need a power house of a phone. she would just like to get a GPS app and a web browser with text abilities. it was this or an iphone so i think i might go grab it for her as i'm so against iphone .
though... scriz, i'm curious why you seem to hate the phone so much, least that's my impression
take care
If you're on the telus. That's different. So that's up to you.
3 year contract? F that. I like the phone, but I'm still counting down til my upgrade. (April 14th, fwiw) I'm on VZW, so grain of salt and all that, but there is ALWAYS a better phone coming out soon and 3 years seems crazy long to me.
But, right now there isn't a better phone on VZW.
Phone yes, three year contract No! I paid $0 @ Amazon with two years on Verizon.

What he said. No way would I lock into it for 3 years. It is a good phone and all, in fact, I would do the same thing again because the others in this class have problems too. But I bought mine used off of fleabay so I am not locked in. This is a tool for me to learn Android on. I have a very strong feeling that I will be wanting something new in about a year.
I bought this device planning on selling it and upgrading after about six months. Now I plan OJ keeping it for a while. Great even right out. Of the box. If this was for my wife I wouldn't rootbor anything - just stock update to dl09 and let it roll. If I were buying today I would absolutely buy this device. All phones have issues - this one is no different. Bur overall a fantatstic device. I am guessing your wife does not need duel core or it would be her on the nerd forum with us and not you. If you can get a good deal then go for it.

I've got the Vibrant from Bell (the sister phone) and I love it, great bang for the buck. Sure having a dual core phone would be cool but at what price and unless she is a complete power user what would she need the dual core for?
What sucks for us in Canada is the high cost of our monthly plans and the fact that we have to lock into the plans for 3 years.
the 3yr contract is pretty terrible, but the fascinate's an awesome phone, easily the best android out there. especially since telus has froyo

Wow, you Canada guys don't get any option other than 3-year contract? As in, you can't pay more for the phone and get a shorter term, or even pay full price for month to month? I've been doing 1-year contracts with Verizon, not because I plan on leaving, but because I don't want to be locked into the same phone for so long without any upgrade discounts. That allowed me to upgrade off the Eris to the Fascinate after 10 months. The Fascinate was made available for sale conveniently a day before I was eligible for upgrade with discount. That day of waiting was torture.
I'm on Verizon and I'd still buy it again even without the Froyo update. Most of the bad press on this phone has been because of the lack of Froyo. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to have it, but I had it on my old phone and it's not that big of a deal. The responsiveness of the phone and the beautiful samoled screen win out in the end. Besides, if you're on Telus, you'll have Froyo anyway.
So how many of you are going to be getting this phone come June 8th? I for one am preordering mine as soon as i can.

not true, I upgraded to the samsung vibrant back in july after it came out, then the mt4g dropped and so i bought it full price, which was like $400 and then sold my vibrant for $350 on ebay, so out of pocket it costed $50 for the "upgrade", so not trillionaires, just smart shoppers lol
true, if you keep a phone in great condition you can get a good resale value. as for me, I upgraded my sidekick 08 to the mytouch 4g and it cost me around $200 and Im keeping it as mint as possible

Guys, DO NOT GET THE SENSATION, get the g2x instead the sensation has a arm a8 processor (even though it's clocked at 1.2ghz), compared to the g2x's arm a9(clocked at at 1ghz), so it's actually a better processor, regardless of all the other specs.

It's the nature of consumer electronics these days; fast depreciation. It's entire possible that this phone could go Eol in a few months. It is no longer the newest and fastest device on the block.
I wonder if there will be an "Epic 2", or at least a Galaxy S2 with a keyboard. Samsung seems to be releasing a new Galaxy S every year. I imagine we will have more information around late summer.

I'll definitely be around. Not going to do the hero like that. Too much history.
im not going anywere, anytime soon i cant upgrade till later next year, but im grandfathered into one of the best contracts in cell phone history and if i early upgrade ill have to get a new one.
129$ a month for umlimted everything on 2lines you cant beet that.
so im more than happy with my hero as long as i have that lol.
I am here, my upgrade isn't until January so I will be here a while. FWIW if you did want to consider an EVO now, it is free at best buy as an upgrade.

$99 at Best Buy for upgrade. I was contemplating whether to get the 3D or the Evo 4G. I couldn't pass up the dual core processor with 3D camera. Now that I have the 3D I would have kicked myself for getting the Evo 4G

Come on! This phone is super fast.
My Hero is now lifeless! Poor thing.
Surprisingly, I didn't have many complaints with my Hero. But I do think a lot of people will end up moving to the Evo 4G that can't get the 3D, just because it is cheaper now. Just like when the price of the Hero went down, we got an influx of people in this forum.

I saw $99. Didn't look today though. That was on the 20th.

Some random thoughts:
1) What's up with all these people who get the latest phone on launch day. I got my hero when it came out in fall of '09, so I'm not due for an upgrade, Much less an early upgrade, till September or so.
2) I thought I'd pick up a cheap used evo 4g for a while to tide me over till the next gen of dual cores in late fall but they're still expensive on Craigslist. Anybody want $100 cash for their evo ;-)
3) If I did get an evo, I'd have to pay the $10/mo 4g tax when we don't even have 4g in Milwaukee. That's like flushing $120 down the toilet.
So no, I'm not going anywhere. Frankly, I'm happy with my heroc running cm7.
I'm still here until October (maybe) but I'm sort of glad it's quieted down, I need to spend less time tinkering with my phone anyway.
I'm waiting for the next dual core after the 3vo or if rumors are true maybe an iPhone although I'm fully integrated with Google, I'm still a Mac user.
Plus I got hit by a truck so I'm not participating much anyway.
i only use cyanogen and mess around with random prls thats about as much tinkering i do lol.
serously cyanogen is all i need in a phone everything works and its up to date with software the only thing i ever use my phone for now a days since i got my laptop is tethering phone calls and texts lol.

Hardly a 4G tax anymore as they apply it to all new activations. It's a rate hike, but you'll be hard pressed to find better rates on a major carrier.
