Hi everyone, I'm getting a "SD card read only" error. It also says " card has an unexpected error". It's very strange because I've been using this card for over 1.5 years in my blackberry and worked without a glitch. Also tapping on the notification seems to remount the card. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Most likely you'll need to scan & fix errors and or format again to fat32. Do it mounted to pc or put SDcard in memory card reader.

Its a common problem. Ive had it happen a few times now, think adding corrupted video or mp3 files causes it. Thankfully its an easy fix.
As upintheair said, scan and fix errors. If your comp recoginises the sd card when you plug the phone in, you can just right click on the drive - Tools tab - Check now, tick both boxes. This will fix the problem but it will happen again unless you remove the problem file.
If the SD isnt recognised when you plug your phone in, put the sd card in a usb card reader and do the same (they are pennies from ebay or electrical shops)
Another advice I can give is to "safely remove" the SD card, after you're done working with it in windows.
Assume you connect your phone to your Windows PC in harddisk mode.
After you've changed the files on your SD card, locate the "Safely Remove Hardware" button in the Windows task bar, left to the clock.
Click on it and select your Android Phone. This will safely unmount the phone from the Windows OS, thus preventing data corruption on the SD card.
First of all thnx for the help ...I did the scan&fix errors and there were some errors that got fixed. As I understood from the report the errors were due to corrupted files so my conclusion is that I should've "safely removed" the card. I usually just select the "charge only" mode from the phone after I am done with the "disk drive" mode and only then unplug from pc. So, is this behaviour wrong? Should I just select "safely remove" from pc and then just unplug?

Do both won't kill you. First switch to charge only mode from disk drive mode on your DHD, then do also a Safely Remove Hardware from your PC.

You have either an inspire or DHD, which is it? If I understand correctly you have tried several different sd cards and none work!? Sounds like a hardware issue then and my advice would be return it for a warranty repair.

I finally got around to rooting mine earlier today..
Ever since, I can't get either of my computers (both Mac and PC) to recognize the phone for mounting the SD card. It charges fine via USB but is impossible to mount as USB storage. Any ideas on this?
Maybe a driver issue?
I thought that originally. But if that were the case, I wouldn't have been able to connect to them previously (no changes in drivers on the computers) or been able to connect to complete the root process. I'm kind of at a loss for ideas right now.
hmm strange... I'm a android newbie so i don't think i can help passed driver
Method?

Hey what method did you use to root? If you can mount your internal storage but not your sdcard, can your phone read your sd card when the phone is booted normally? Perhaps you damaged your slot?

exactly what i was thinking, but myz06vette are you able to view content from your sd card using just your phone? ex: music, movies or pictures?
Yes, I can view content on my SD card and internal phone storage on the phone itself using Root Explorer or ASTRO. I didn't use the method that required me to pull the SD card out. I can play music stored on the card and view all my photos, so I know its reading okay. I even took the SD card out and put it in a memory card reader and it hooked up to the computer fine.. mounted right away. Just won't mount through the phone.

The development.apk packaged in many Dream/G1 ROMs has an option to scan for media. Try that
BTW, *#*#4636#*#* also works from the dialer to pull up phone/radio options, which will allow you to switch between cdma auto (PRL) --> cdma only -->> ev-do only. The latter two options should save you battery!
Thanks for the advice! I updated to CDMA-only right when I got the phone.. so I honestly can't say whether or not its saving me battery since I don't know what it was like set to CDMA auto PRL hahaa.
I tried installing the Dev Tools apk you attached, but each time I do, it says "Application not installed" with the yellow !triangle next to it.

Sorry, man -- that .apk was from an Eclair build -- try the new one I put up -- it's from an Espresso build, I just installed in on my DI -- all good
Hah alright fair enough. This one loaded fine.
Checking it out now... will report back. Thanks!
Half of the options in the app force close.
Media scanner loaded, but isn't helping me mount the sd card to my computer.
Any more ideas?

So you've checked your settings in "Connect to PC" -- perhaps your "always ask" option is cleared and it's set to HTC Sync, for example? What do you get in the SDcard/Storage menu? Any stats for the SDcard? What happens when you elect to eject it in that menu?
Storage menu shows total space and free space like it should.
Connect to PC is currently set to Ask me everytime.. option for Disk Drive selected just to try and force it to mount..
Removed SD card.. did battery pull reset.. still nothing.

That's frustrating. You might have to back-up your sdcard data on a PC and re-format the card, then copy the data back. I'm assuming you have a card reader.
I hadn't thought until just now to try another card. I've got a few sitting around here somewhere. I'll try that before taking the time to backup almost a full 16 gigs of stuff, format, then restore it all.

Do you have some sort of app killer/task manager auto killing the obex service? Ive noticed i have problems when it isnt running, but when it is running it kills battery like mad. Try going to settings>applications>running services and see if its running next time you try to mount. It should show up under calendar. Hope this helps.
P.S. I only let this service run when i need to plug into my pc, since it seems to keep the phone from being able to "sleep" properly. So if you have something killing it, or the calendar app has been removed that may have a part in your problem.
I hate to start a "OMG ITS NOT WORKING" Thread. But im just plain stuck.
Im trying to get to my sd card on my computer, to switch to my 4gb and to get the update.zip on it so i can root. But no matter what i do, it wont mount. My computer complains that the "USB Device not recognized" and loads a bogus driver. Ive been trying to get it figured out but nothing so far.
Anyone else have this problem? Any one know how to fix it?
hope this helps

No help :O( i dont get whats wrong.
what happens when you plug in the usb cord? Are any external drives shown on your computers file/drive viewer (my computer, etc)? If so can you open those drives, if not what does it say?
the way it should work is.
-DL the drivers here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7218057
-install the drivers on your PC
-hookup phone to PC via the provided usb cable
-on the phone drop down the notification bar and MOUNT the SD card.
-open My Computer or other file viewer
-see two external drives one the internal with about 13GB of total space and one the SD card with 2GB of total space
-add remove files from cards
I did all that. When i plug it in, my computer says "the usb device is not recognized" and proceeds to load a bogus driver. Ive installed the debugging driver, nothing. nothing shows up in my computer for the sd card, OR the phones own flash memory.
I have 3 separate android phones, never had this problem before.
try connecting the phone to your pc again. Make sure that on your phone, that youre using the mass-storage option. Next look at the top of your phone, and pull down the header bar. and click on the "usb connected" option or whatever it says, and then choose "mount" when it pops up.
That's how your actually turn on the mass-storage. dont know why its like this, thought it would be automatically done after chosing the mass-storage option.
I am having the same issue. Installed drivers but can't access the drives.
It does automatically set it self for mass storage, but the computer for some reason isnt seeing it. im pretty sure its a driver issue. or the usb port on the phone maybe bad... that would be annoying.
so is there a way to read the files i have added after i connect my phone to pc as "hard disk " to transfer files ?
every time i add a file, i have to restart the andriod "phone" for it to see it.
if i try to remove the SD card while andriod is running. it will hang and i will have to restart.
is there some other things that can be done? like. media scanner for example.. will it work ?
thanks
Have you tried unmounting and then mounting the SD card? I don't know if it works or not, but it's worth a try.

In my build all i have to do is clicking "enable usb storage card" when plugging in pc! Then "safe remove" on pc, click "disable usb storage card" and everything works again!!!
Weird!

Use drop box app. Host your own files online and download them directly to your phone.
bangsters 1.5 supports usb mass storage
I'm only guessing, but it sounds to me that he's talking about apps like music and the gallery. They need to be refreshed somehow when you copy new images or audio files, and I've tried and can confirm that unmounting and then mounting does this.

Use swiftp to transfer files to your sdcard then you will be able to access them without reboot.

I need some guidance re: unmounting/mounting my SD card from Windows. When I attach my phone to my PC I see a message "USB debugging connected" and "Disk drive", in that order. "Autoplay" opens on my PC showing the card letter. "Open folder to view files" gives me access to the files on the card. Once I've completed adding/removing files I have been right-clicking on the SD card in the list shown in "Computer" and choosing "Eject". Can I then unplug the USB cable, or should I change the "Connect to PC" setting on my phone to "Charge only", instead of "Disk drive"? OR is there another unmount step I should take (The unmount/mount concept is confusing to me). When I choose "Charge Only", I get a message on the phone "Preparing SD card".
Thanks in advance.

Really? I thought any time you wanted to unplug the phone from your pc you had to either right-click and "Eject" or "Safely Remove" (WAS asking which) and then in addition deal with the "Disk drive" setting on the phone. Am I totally misinterpreting things? I have been running mdeejay's MDJ FroyoHD 2.2.1 (since removed from this forum) since December without a glitch. HOWEVER, every other version I've tried, including the newest GB versions have crashed and burned as soon as I started adding music and photos via my desktop (usually within 24-48 hours). Trying to figure out what's going on with these builds. Initially thought that my new SD card (16GB, class 10) was too fast. Then tried an 8GB class 2; same issues. So, I figured this mounting, ejecting stuff was damaging the data.
More confused than ever.
-Bob-
I also just pull USB out without "safely ejecting". If you suspect that your problems are due to files copying, maybe try to shutdown hd2, pull off sd card and copy files with card reader.

That would generally work. However, I use iSyncr to transfer iTunes music to the phone. On the initial transfer (about 1000 songs) it is impractical to use iSyncrWiFi (over-the-air) to do the transfer (too slow). So, at least in that instance I need to connect the phone.
Since I have your attention , can you explain what the unmount/mount discussions are all about?
Thanks again.

my note 3 is dead. samsung told me the motherboard needs replacement. and on the same day my 64gb micro sd card stopped working. it says its damaged and needs formatting when inserted in a different phone. its doesn't even show up on the laptop when connected. so basically im trying not to lose ~90gb data. its heartbreaking. is there any way i can at-least try to save some of it
What happens if you insert the SD-card into your laptop and check for it via Disk Manager?
To do so: Go to your desktop and right click on Computer>Manage>Storage>Disk Management and check if you can find it there. Look at the lower part of the window (gray background) and see if you can see the storage there.
If you can see your SD-card's storage there you might have some hope. Though I can't really help you any further from this point but I can assure you that if you see your storage unit there you can save some data from it.

If the sdcard shows up in disk manager you can use GetBackData to restore your files. The software is not free but can be If you google. After you have restored the files you needed you can then format the sdcard.
I have only used this software to restore deleted files on NTFS formated harddrives but there is a FAT version of GetBackData.
you need to put in a sdcard reader on you computer and use testdisk to restore your mbr
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
I used many times and it's very efficient
Do not do any writr accesses to the card from niw on as it may destroy your data
to restore the filesystem ( error 'sd must be formatted') use the windows tool chkdsk | type into cmd 'chkdsk /?' and read the you will need
for data recovery use "recuva" its freeware
for both you will need windows and a card reader, also make sure the card is not in locked status

reboot your computer and use chkdsk /f /r
EDIT: recuva will only work when you have a working filesystem, cann you properly acces the file system on your sd, or does it tell you you have to format the card first (which you shd not do ofc)
