ok so I got my custom rom installed...it was easy as baking a cake, everything works great...however
1- contacts that I saved today, are not showing up in my contacts list after I re-set up my gmail account. How can I get them back?
2- it's normal right that my phone is basically like a brand new phone, correct? ie there are no apps, it did the intro video, showed me the guides to adding a social network and yada yada...first time installing a rom, so I'm curious.
Yes its normal for it to look like it did out of the box and unfortuantely, some some roms require you to re input your contacts

I found that guide while doing some research and was wondering if it was a good guide to follow to install NSFAN's latest 6.5 ROM or if there was a better guide out there.
Also, I am still on Verizon's stock 6.1 ROM (with only very minor customizations) and was looking for a way to back up my contacts. I have all my pictures, videos, ringtones, and apps, but was looking to back up contacts. This owuld most likely be easy if I had Outlook, but I don't. I have a Mac with Mail and a Windows 7 machine with Windows Live Mail.
Sorry about so many questions.
I just did this for my dads VZW phone Sunday. I used the free trial of SPB Back-UP and installed it and made a back up of entire phone - saved to MicroSD card, then I flashed and installed the same SPB Back-UP and did a Restore - then chose custom back-up and selected what I wanted to restore. It restored his contacts, My Documents, Call Logs, Call History, Text, and all E-mail settings that he had on his phone.. It was FANTASTIC!!! and easy as 1. Install 2. Back-Up 3.Install 4. Recover.
Plus if you ever wanted to go back to Stock 6.1 you can do a full restore and it will put you back at exactly where you were BEFORE you went to WinMO 6.5..
Hope this helps

Did you follow that guide with your Verizon Vogue? I have read so much **** about this its confusing. Do you not need to unlock, downgrade the radio, install a rom, upgrade radio, install another rom?
Ok, the backup portion is good. Now the remaining question is that guide and if it is any good?
Anyone got a better one if it isn't?
I ordered a magic 32a that will arrive next week and am getting roms and the associated programs for loading them (when i finish making sense of it!)
im wondering how much stuff i should load onto the phone before i put a custom rom on there ... what will i lose , e.g. contacts, sms, apps, settings ?
I have a mac and i could borrow my girls pc for the purposes of backing stuff up if mac wont cut it!
also are there still working "one click" rooting utils online that actually work as i didnt see them listed in the root guides on here ? if not ill go with the relentless rooter
New rom will wipe out everything on the phone with the exception of stuff on your sdcard..
But if your phone comes with the google apps, your contacts and calendar will be backed up to the googlr cloud..

Hey guys, ive only been a Wm user and a smart phone user for a month now.
I have many of the same issues with current rom and freezing and so forth.
I want to upgrade to the new released Tmobile rom released a few days ago.
When i start the file up, it indicates that all data will be removed. and phone whiped like brand new.
1. Will this delete all my contacts?
2. Will this delete all apps I have d/l from market?
3. Will this delete all setting and configurations for email and calendar?
4. Is there a simple app to back all of those up if they are removed on rom update, that I can then run after i do the update and have everything back in place how I had it before.?
5. (off topic) is there any sim cards out there that can store more then 250 contacts? in teh case of the sim, 250 numbers. I have 284 contacts with many of them having multiple numbers.
Thank you for your answers and any advice you can give me on how to transition to the new update without loosing my data or settings and lay out and programs.
It will wipe your phone just like you bought it. You can back up most things, except settings. Contacts can be backed up by two apps already on the phone, the tmo backup app and microsoft myphone. The apps from windows market can be re downloaded and the market will remember what apps you had. If you saved installed apps on your sd card they will still be they after the wipe. (Still need to reinstall them) I wiped my phone a couple of times and really the only thing I back are my contacts and my sms.

actually many apps dont need to be reinstalled.
Browse to the apps folder on the sd card (lets say samsapp)
Find the executable (samsapp.exe) and run it.
If the program runs and works fine, then all you need do is copy (as a shortcut) the executable to windows/start menu and voila, program can be run from start menu, or quicklinks, etc and didn't need to be reiinstalled.
....title says it all. Well, almost.
I have a D2 running on Froyo(2.2) and I tried to flash my ROM to Epic 2.7. Now I am pretty sure I did it wrong because my system version still says Version.2.2.20A955.Verizon.en.US.
I have my phone rooted. I have Titanium Backup, I have D2 Bootstrapper from Kouish(sp?) and ROM manager.
Unfortunately this is where my brain ends on this. I am sure there are step by step tutorials on how to do what I want because I have looked at them all, I just can't understand it :-(
I would like to think I am a bit smart and on the tech side but this end of the spectrum is still a gray area for me. My phone is now lagging, buggy, and just not working the way I thought it would.
Can anyone please offer some assistance so I can grasp my mind around how to be a part of this awesomeness that custom ROMS bring?
EDIT: I should also add this. I really want a ROM that is going to give my battery life longevity and have my phone running as smooth and quickly as possible without the dangers of overclocking. Any suggestions that can come along with instructions on how to load the ROMS is very welcome!
Thanks!
Did you do a full backup through clockwork before installing this?
Also, when you flashed the new rom, did you mount the system before hand?
Clockwork Recovery yes, mount no. I have no clue how to do that.

Angdroid has Sticky Posts with instructions. Start there.
Install Instructions are pretty much the basics for installing any rom so far.
Before you get to Install Instructions, well you're probably good since you're in the right place (XDA), but you always want to make sure you have Root, latest SuperUser binary files (just open SuperUser it will check itself), and ROM Manager. Titanium Backup is also good to have for many things.
After you read the Install Instructions move on to the Hacking Guide thread. Check the last post for the image in case you want to use different .apk files to modify the ROM in your own way.
I use Root Explorer (from Market) and it uses SU permissions. Copy .apk files to \\system\apps with Read/Write permissions. Press & hold > Permissions > Make it look like the picture from his thread.
So to recover quickly and get Epic running on your D2 - go straight to http://www.droidforums.net/forum/angdroid/87766-install-instrucions.html
You may be able to skip the wipe data and factory reset - but I'd say if you're phone is running slow from the partial install you've described - do it all. Plus it's good practice for restoring the phone however you choose since you'll probably be doing it more and more. Welcome to the fun.
SWEET!!!! It worked. But now I don't have my contacts saved anymore. Soooooo.....yeah how do I get that info back? lol
...also it saved my Facebook contacts but if I tried to call them it FC back to the home screen. I am running EpicUnleased2.7

Sign into your google account, it should auto sync your contacts.
whenever installing a theme or mod, you will need to mount the system. This will allow you to have read write access, or in other words, allow you to copy files from your SDCARD to your phone.

You'll need to install Backup Assistant if you want it to work the old way. I do not recommend using it for contact sync as google is sufficient.
It's not opening because it was purposefully disabled.
I recommend going to verizonwireless.com, sign in to your account, go to My Contacts and EXPORT them as an outlook csv file. Save it on your computer. Go to gmail.com on your computer and sign in to your gmail. Go to Contacts. Now look for IMPORT Contacts. Choose the csv file you saved from verizonwireless.com. After that, make sure google contacts are set to sync on your phone. Finally, wait a minute or two while they show up.
After they are back on your phone, you can go to Contacts. Press your Menu Key. Choose MORE. IMPORT/EXPORT. EXPORT will save a copy of your contacts to your memory card (it's a csv file that can be used if you ever lose them).
....GOT IT! Took a minute but it worked!
Thanks to you guys for all the help! I wouldn't have been able to understand it if you hadn't stepped up!
Next thing I want to learn is themes!...but I will save that debacle for another day...
again thanks a million!

No problem man
I've searched in vain for an answer to this. I'm running the new Virtuous Affinity v2.05.0. I keep my contacts synced with T-Mobile rather than putting them in Gmail. I want to get my contacts synced back to the phone. When I go to add that account (Settings > Accounts & Sync > Add an Account), there is no T-Mobile account type option. Can someone tell me the name of the .APK I need to install to get the T-Mobile account type back? I have a copy of the rooted stock v2.3.4 ROM so I can get any of the included .APKs.
Thanks.

Asked this months ago as most custom roms have it removed...you can flash the rooted stock and let your contacts re sync, then use an app that backs up contacts and then restore them whenever you flash another rom...if you read the thread I linked, there its a way to pull the contacts out of the my tmobile website so you can import them into google. Once your contacts are in google, you won't have to worry about it as long as you own an android phone
