I've never sim unlocked a phone before, is it possible to unlock the Atrix so I can use it on T-Mobiles edge network?

Everything is possible. But not this time.
Wait until the official Root procedure be published first. Then it may be a way to unlock the phone.
Or if you are lucky enough, then you may get the unlock code directly from AT&T.
Would they really give me the unlock code?

i'm tracking sites that will probably sell unlock codes at this thread:

So my provider (rogers) uses the same bands as ATT.... would the atrix work with 3g.... or would it still need to be unlocked, and is that possible yet?
Thx

My friend on att is looking for a phone and considering the myTouch4g... how easily can it be unlocked?
Thanks

Look at it this way: I've never unlocked a phone in my life, not even my brothers iTouch. Not because I didn't know how, just because I never needed to. It is stupidly easy, unless you have issues following simple instructions.
two options:
1. call tmobile for the unlock code
2. perform ultimate s=off root (do a search should come right up)
not too hard to do if you follow the instructions
Awesome, I intended to root it anyways.
Thanks!

I enter a prepaid AT&T sim card and its not asking me for the unlock code..but I dont see any signal bars and it doesnt give me the option to change the mobile network..is this ok?

Yes using the ./Gfree method will unlock the sim but before you root that way make sure you have the "good" emmc chip as a lot of phones have randomly been becoming bricks using ./Gfree
You can read about it and how to check your phone if you have the "good" or "bad" chip. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079025

make sure you're inserting the sim properly
As far as I know the my touch 4G (unlocked) will work on att's network but will not be able to use the 3G service because T mobile uses a different frequency for its 3g nand
Yea in the video for installing gfree the guy said you would not get 4g or 3g. If you went with AT&T.
This may be dumb question, but why unlock the MyTouch4G when you can just get the Inspire for AT&T? It's similar spec-wise with a larger screen and will get HSPA+.

From what I hear the phone is restricted to what kind of sims it will read and needs to be unlocked so that I can use it in europe. Is there any way I can do that by myself following some instructions or do I have to take it somewhere?
Please help

You need to unlock the phone, not the sim. Call T mobile and ask for an ublock code.

Hi guys I have one question that maybe was already asked here,so I am sorry if I am asking stupid questions.. Anyway, I want to give my galaxy s to my brother but we are not using the same network, and my phone is locked to my network. So how safe is phone unlocking ? what is the procedure for unlocking the phone and is it shortening phones' life? Also,my brother will be using it in another country...Thanks in advance!

I've never had a problem unlocking a phone.
Just buy an unlock code online. Check eBay first.
After you have the unlock code, give the phone to your brother and when. He inserts his SIM card, he will be asked for an unlock code. Once he enters it, he can use the phone...

Interesting, I thought it was much more complicated than that.. I am in Serbia now using Vip mobile, my brother will use it on Vodaphone Malta, you think that there would be no problems if I buy code from uk ebay? Is it than unlocked for every other network in the Europe? Thanks

Just make sure that your brother's network is compatible. (AKA he uses a SIM card and that the network specs are compatible) and you should be fine...

Ok,but how should I know if they are compatible? What should I check first?

I hope this isn't a dumb question. But from what I understand when you have S-off do you have access to all the networks around you? Or are you still bound by your carrier? Thanks! and sorry if this has been answered before I tried searching S-off and other stuff but couldn't really find what I was looking for.
Call T-Mobile tell them yore going out of the country and they will send you the code.
I think it's that easy and I used different carriers in,Hong Kong,Mexico and the Philippines.
But that's with sim cards from those countries.

If you mean connecting to any network without being on their service...no you can't. that's illegal.

It's not illegal. It's called "roaming" and costs A LOT $$$.
To the OP:
S-OFF gives you the ability to flash anything to your phone's ROM (internal non-volatile memory). It doesn't have anything to do with cellular connectivity.
SIM unlock gives you the ability to use other carriers' SIM cards in your phone. It can be achieved through a part of the same rooting process that achieves S-OFF.
The quote below will guide your search:

Is there any way to make my phone go into roaming manually so tmo will cancel my contract? I've been wondering if this is possible for awhile now. My wife and I are very sick of getting throttled every month, but don't want to change plans and have them extend our contract again.

Once your phone is paid off they will unlock it if you're using EIP...if you purchased full price and have had your account over 40 days they will unlock it...don't see the need for a petition lol

They change their policy in April 2013. They are giving people that purchased at full price a headache to unlock their phones...

Nope. But it makes people feel better and that seems to be what matters most...
MG
As long as you bought the phone outright you can unlock it. I just sim unlocked my at&t varient.
Online sim unlocking services...
I don't get it. I unlocked my SIM by paying some guy (I forgot his sellers is name) on EBay $3.50
Why is there a need for a petition?

At the moment, in the USA, sim unlocking by anyone except the carrier is technically illegal. The exemption was removed. I think they are working on taking care of that though. On that same note T-Mobile should let you sim unlock if you ask. Remember you can always ask for a supervisor.

There already was a petition on the whitehouse site to remove that bit and they responded to it.
