What sort of more info do you need......... please elaborate

stuff like info about the wifi network, if you've checked several networks, signal strength, which browser (stock or other browser), have you tried other internet based apps etc...
In the OP you are pretty much saying "hey, i connect to a network and cant open a website, help!" How can anybody deduce the exact problem from that?

It would be highly appreciable if you could help me

I would if I could, but with this amount of information all i can suggest is to do a reset.

Please tell me what should i tell you.
I simply connected wifi and it got conected......... it show in the settings that wifi is connected....... now, i trying to access net via the default browser which comes with galaxy 3, but it is not able to open any page. even I tried to connnect gmail it is also not getting connecting.......showing connection error............
this is the real problem

Does this happen on only one wifi network or on more networks? If its only on one it might be a network specific issue, like having to set DNS, or something else. If you have only experienced it on one (even if you only tested on one) what can you tell me about the network; is it your home network, school network, work network or whatever, what kind of protection it has.
Tell me us anything you can about this situation, since we cant conclude what the situation is, is it a problem with the phone, with the wifi network, aliens disrupting your phone to get some laughs out of it. It could be anything!

It happens with all the network, it tried accessing from office as well

I am trying to access wifi from my home network....... tried from office as well......

even my phone says that wifi is connected. but there is problem with browser... none of app is connecting....... not even FB, games or any other application

Before resetting try to reboot the phone.

done, still the same problem

Which rom do you have ? have u flashed any ??

do you have a data connection turned on?

Hi.
I have wi-fi problem too. Just appeared 2 days ago. Wi-fi was working normally at my friends house and after i've selected "forget" on his wi-fi and now i cant connect wi-fi at home. It says "unable to scan networks". In phone status there is Wi-Fi MAC address unavailable. If you have an idea just write it down!
Didnt try factory reset yet, hoping you have better idea!
Sry for bad english..

you have to be roooted:
delete or rename(i suggest an extension change with the date) bcm_supp.conf in /data/wifi/
I suggest using root explorer, terminal is also an option.
warning, you will lose saved wifi networks/passwords.
you can open the file to retrieve some passwords.
if you have a titanium backup of system data i think you could restore it with that, not sure about it.

I dont care about passwords, will get them easy.
But i'm not that good using Terminal Emulator. What should i write in it to rename/delete bcm_supp?
EDIT : you are my hero! just installed root explorer (really cool apk), renamed the file above and works fine!
If u ever come to Croatia you got a beer

Yup, root explorer is a nice app, I had to do it via the terminal myself a couple of times, not as pleasant as with root explorer.
P.S. I got a beer, yay! Where in Croatia?

WiFi: Conected but VERY slow

I'm pretty happy with my new HTC Hero, but I'm having a lot of trouble with the WiFi connection. I connects fine and shows "good" or "excelent" signal strength on my home network. However the speed is very slow and if I go to Android Market it loads the different apps very slowly an looses connection often: It says "No connection" and I press the "Retry" button...). It is not just a problem i Android Marked. Loading pages in the browser, facebook etc. is extremely slow when on WiFi. When I'm using EDGE everything is A LOT faster and I don't get "A network error has occured. Retry or cancel...etc.".
I have tried different settings on my access point, but nothing seems to help. I have (tempoarily) disabled encryption, tried swiching channels, using B instead og G setting, and manually setting: Gateway, DNS etc... In the end it got a bit frustrating so I tried a factory reset. But WiFi is still very slow. If you have any suggestions to what the problem might be I would be very grateful.
I had a similar problem with my AP (D-Link DIR 655) and tried to set it to use the same communications setup as another AP that worked properly. Whatever I did with encryption, keys and channels made no difference on my AP. The solution on this AP was to set it to 802.11g only (it was b+g+n), and it has worked fine since.
I do however suspect that there may be some serious issues lurking in the linux kernel that is used on the hero (2.6.27). Wifi was a nightmare on that release with notebooks too, and core parts of the wifi-stack has been replaced since. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a significant improvement in wifi-performance whenever there's an Android release that include a 2.6.30 or later kernel.
I have been having the same issues but my wifi didnt work with the browser, or youtube. I downloaded Opera mini and wifi works fine. With factory browser i can go to google and it will load and search but once i click on links found it hangs and wont connect. I am so frustrated my sim is going back into my iphone 3gs until an update is released this sucks big time
It is a bit disappointing if this is a general issue, but I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one with this type of problem.
Maybe this could also be a HTC-issue? I remember my HTC Tytn II where there was a slider where you could choses between "performance" or "battery saving". I remember that I couldn't get the WiFi to run properly unless I set it to highest performance. I consumed more power but it worked with this setting.
On my Hero, the HSDPA connection is for some reason faster than my ADSL2+ (24Mbps) connection. Rather odd..
Same here. The 3G/EDGE is a lot faster than my 20 Mbit ADSL. It makes no sense
Why does it take so long to make a connection to my router via wifi?
This can sometimes take 10 - 15 minutes before I have a connection.
With my windows mobile device this takes only a few seconds.
I'm experiencing the same issue on my Hero (with updated HTC firmware). I've also tried playing around with my routers settings to no avail. My Hero is basically useless for browsing on WIFI.
I'm curious, does anyone running an alternative rom experience this? If not I may look into rooting my phone..
Root your phone and do this
echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_timestamps

you've had 57 posts and dont know what rooting is;p aha (not trying to be a ****, just found that funny:])
when you root your phone you gain root access and can do just about anything, like install apps that need root access! there are guides in the dev section on how to, and if you do a search there is a thread on what root allows you to do!
i dont know if that command will fix your problem though, sorry!

I've been a "windows mobile" user for a long time.
I know what "root access" is in the general Unix environment.
But I don't really know how it works on the Android OS.
I'm more of a Windows guy.
It's my first time messing on Android, I got tired of Windows Mobile.
frem
Just my humble opinion. This is a problem that should be fixed by htc.
If rooting fixes it it's good, but it can't be a requirement to get it working properly.
I mean you buy a phone with wifi, you expect it to be as fast as your provider is... Getting less is just not getting what you paid for.
Has anyone mailed HTC about this problem? I hardly ever use wifi but tried it today
and indeed my hsdpa is lot's faster than my 20mbit connection @ home.
Help us pleaseeee

That pretty much cut the speed in half for me.
Seriously the wifi issue is a big problem for me. I don't have a 3g unlimited plan.
Basically when i activate the wifi i start a application like update weather or check a webpage or update tweets, it works then connection drop and i can't connect to anything.
I have to deactivate wifi then reactivate to get like 40 seconds surfing and downloading apps on the market.
IS everyone having the same wifi problem ?
It happened on every access point not just the one at my place.
Please help me, is it my phone that has a hardware problem ?
frem
you gotta think of it this way...
most people who dont have problems arnt gunna make it to this thread because there not searching for it! So your mostly gunna get replys saying "same here"
so im guessing most people dont have this problem.. although it could be a specific rom on a specific carrier or something... see if you have anything in common with other people with this problem, if not, maybe it is hardware
WiFi channels
Have you tried changing the wifi channel in your router settings in case there is interferance with a nearby router on the same channel? Although you would experience slow wifi on any wifi device (laptops)..but worth checking.
I've just done a speedtest on my phone using the speedtest.net app and do get just over half the download speed on my phone (5-6mbps) opposed to my pc (wired 9-10mbps) and laptop (wireless 9-10mbps). So knowing my wireless is set up correctly, it does show some loss in speed with the hero. See how much of a loss you get?
Adam
Thank you for your reply. I think i figured it out. I am at the countryside right now and im connnected on a diferent acess point and it's working perfectly i'm actually writing this post in WiFi mode on the hero. So the problem is from the other access point i tested. i already tried changing the Channel number. I use a french provider that use access points called "freebox"
FYI the problem with the hero and some wifi access points is well known and is being forwarded to htc by Vodafone.

at home wifi internet connection problems...

Alright alright shoot me if this has already been asked or mentioned or thought of by anyone here or any one who you ever knew. I've been searching the entire net, the XDA forums have nothin on the subject (the the search function and i arent seeing eye to eye.).
My problem is this,
I am at home, connecting to my router, and that connects fine. But i am not connected to the internet. On my PC there is an option if i want to connect to the network, and then the internet. But in the HD2, there is no option to connect, Im only connecting ot the network, but not internet access.
went to a buddys house, he got his wi fi up and running in a matter of seconds, he did exactly as i have done, located the connection, typed the pass, and that was that.
but i cannot even find a place that asks me for an internect connection after i have connected to the network, nothing there.
And i cannot find any help on this subject.
i hope you get me if not, then dont bother. i am tired of reading mountains of crap that has nothing to do with my problem.
thanks in advance
appologies for my tone, just a little frustrated right now.
ah, btw, my 3g connect works fine. just not the wifi.
Once the network is connected there's nothing more to do to get internet access. At home, does it take a long time for the HD2 to connect to the network (arrows moving on the wifi icon more than ~5secs)? If you co to connection manager -> wifi -> advanced -> advanced tab, what IP do you have?
Well it connects to 'alice-wlan' really quickly, and automatically.
but there is still no internet connection. i think its a router setting problem, because on my pc i also have to connect first to alice.wlan (does it autoimatically) but then i have to manually connect to the internet (broadband)... i do not knwo how to change this.
i dont know what IP i have, you mean as a router?
correction,
now it connects to the router quite slow, if it does at all, then drops it almost immediatly.

that makes me think you are using the old style routers that don't hold the broadband always open. meaning either the router or the pc need to dial the adsl. usually you put the connection details into the router and it handles it,,
just thinking out loud.
Hmm actually now you say that I've been at someone's place recently where they had an ADSL plan that was time-billed, so they had to open a browser and login before being able to access the web...

it says 0.0.0.0 hmmm i dont know if that right tho
Wait until the arrows stop moving on the wifi icon, and it whould then say something more relevant.
still nothing, 0.0.0.0 ...

well, in win7 i alice connects automatically, then theres a broadband (internet) tab, i click on that, and it runs the use/pass and connects.

Problem with WiFi router.
Some WiFi routers let you connect but not actually use it:
they require password or are not for public use.
Shouldnt be that is the problem. cuz she did connect to my wifi router a couple of weeks ago.
Well i did a soft reset(though i dont know if it is really resetted), and it worked again. But i still hope someone can answer why is this happening.
Thanks!
Tell her to temporarily open up her WiFi connection and disable encription.
Try to connect.
This worked for me on my dads router, a 2WIRE modem/router combination that he got from AT&T, (terrible device).
When done just re-enable the encryption.
If she wants to keep the encryption then you need to go into the WiFi settinngs and locate her WiFi signal.
Click Connect.
Then try each encrypted setting until it works(TPK, SHARED, TPK-PSK, etc. . . ). This is what I had to do at my office and at home. It took a bit of time but I finally found the correct type of encryption.
Worth trying. Will try telling her these when she comes by again today. Thanks mate!

Vibrant wifi issue?

If I am at home using my personal router, my wifi works great and I have no problems at all. However, when I am at the library, which is everyday for me, if i try to use their wifi I instantly get this error message that the page cannot be displayed even though my phone claims i am connected to their wifi.
anyone else have this issue? it is extremely annoying and i downloaded wifi fixer but it didnt fix anything.
any ideas?
If it works at home then I doubt it's an issue on your side, sometimes on networks such as school campuses and libraries you have to register your device on the network for it to be able to access the internet. Have you asked the library on how you can do that?
Well it is a public library and they have fliers up that tell you how to use their wifi. I thought it was an issue with my phone so I didn't bother asking a librarian. If no one else has a solution I will definitely be asking tomorrow.

well, Android has had that issue ever since, and it is still not fixed.
I think Samsung Galaxy S gets around it in the Wi-Fi proxy config (under settings, Wireless and Network, hit the menu button at the bottom of the screen, and go to Advanced), but you need to know the proxy hostname and port (I think the default will be 80 for HTTP requests).
I haven't tested it though.
Here's the issue log from code.google.com
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1273&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
Mine cannot get on WiFi at the rink I go to. Other people could not get their notebooks or netbooks onto that WiFi as well. My HD2 connects to that WiFi just fine, though.
I don't think it's a Vibrant-specific issue.
I've had a similar problem with the wifi network on my campus. It redirects to a logon page that the vibrant won't even display. Apparently the android browser has an issue with security certificates that aren't configured properly. Froyo is supposed to fix it, but in the mean time try connecting with the firefox browser. I'm able to connect with it, then switch back to the regular browser or any other program. Once you're logged in you're good to go.

Wifi Hotspot - Why Gmail?

Hey everyone,
I've tried all of the tethering apps (usb/wifi) and none seem to give my laptop my legend's 3g data connection. I'm running CM7 (new stable version ) and i've been trying to use the built in hotspot to no avail. I can connect fine, even with WPA2 security, and the laptop connects fine (win7), and even shows full bars on the wifi icon in the bottom right of my taskbar, which says "Internet Access" when my mouse hovers over it.
The problem is, whenever I fire up chrome on my laptop, I get a page that says stuff like "Access denied", "authorization required", "You may need to sign in", and just gives no internet.
At first, I thought that it could be my carrier's fault (SFR France), that they don't want me tethering my phone's connection (I have a contract with unlimited data). The weird thing is, I can actually use gmail on my laptop! Yes, fully load new messages as they come, look through my archived messages, trash, spam, everything. Not even offline messages, it's really connected. So why can I access gmail on my laptop but nothing else? Could it be something to do with https connection to gmail or something like that? My phone's 3g works great, and my laptop has no troubles connecting to my home wifi. I've scoured XDA and google, and never figured it all out.
Anyways, thanks for reading!
Michael
Troubleshooting 101:
- first, please try another laptop.
if the other laptop works, then your current laptop has issues.
My bad, I meant to include in my first post that i've gotten the same result with 3 different laptops.
Have you tried pdanet app? That's what I use and it works wonderfully.

yeah man that was one of the first ones i tried. no go for me, same issue (not connection, but internet access).
When I try to open a page, my phone shows that it starts to download data (with the arrows lighting up and the "H" for HSDPA in the status bar). But then stops and my browser says nope.

How do I change the DNS on my laptop? Don't I need to use cmd for that?
And an interesting new development. Hopefully someone smarter than me understands this:
I've now tried 4 different sites that fully work! The thing is, they're all https sites, which all the other one i tried weren't. Just to let you know, the 4 confirmed funtional sites are:
gmail
google docs
dropbox
android market (in pc browser version, not on my phone)
So its GOT to have something to do with the https...
Any ideas?
Thanks
Michael

Well, I have Windows XP and I don't have experience with Windows 7, but I remember that since Vista the network connections can be set as Home connection or Public (or something like that).
It's a wild guess but maybe the problem with browsing to HTTP websites has something to do with these network settings in Windows 7...
Try to compare the settings in the Home Wifi connection in your laptop vs the Mobile Wifie connection in your laptop, maybe some settings are different between the two.

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately that doesn't change anything. I definitely know what you're talking about, and everytine I connect to a new wifi network I always select home as the network type, so that my browsing isn't restricted. Hence I did the same here, and even tried the public option, but no effect.

Yep I tried usb tethering, same deal. Windows troubleshooting "couldn't identify the problem". It's gotta be something either on my carrier's side, my phone's side, or my laptops side that is restricting hotspot access to http sites.
